Celebrating Women
May 2022 PUBLISHER
Michael Gerard | michael.gerard@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Barbara Kimler
Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with herself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed is both beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own lives is something we should all do every day, but the impact of proactively seeking ways to build up those in our greater community is incredibly powerful. When we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and the true reward from our kindness follows. In this month’s issue, we share the story of some local women who have made their mark by serving others through the sport of tennis. We also tell the tale of a single mother from Ukraine and how, through Rotary Club contacts around the world, she and her young son were able to escape war-torn Kiev and be graciously taken in by a family in Holland. During this month of May, surrounding our annual Mother’s Day celebration, we encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it!

Mother: A Cradle to Hold Me by Maya Angelou With her signature eloquence and heartfelt appreciation, renowned poet and national treasure Maya Angelou celebrates the first woman we ever knew: Mother. From the beginnings of this profound relationship through teenage rebellion and finally, to adulthood, where we stand to inherit timeless maternal wisdom, Angelou praises the patience, knowledge, and compassion of this remarkable parent. Perfect for Mother’s Day, or any day on which we wish to acknowledge this all-important bond, Mother is an awe-inspiring affirmation of the enduring love that exists in every corner of the globe.
TLDR: This is a very short, quick read. A simple book, about a woman growing from childhood, through the teenage years to being an adult.
Mom, I Wrote a Book About You by M.H. Clark Mom, I Wrote a Book About You lets you create a heartfelt gift as unique as your mother. Fill this lighthearted gift book with your favorite moments and shared experiences to remind Mom what she means to you. With fun yet meaningful prompts for you to complete (in under an hour!).
TLDR: A fun, fill-in-the-blank book full of thought-provoking prompts and questions. Fill it out with your thoughts. Because she’s wonderful and you want her to know.

Real Poems for Real Moms: From a Mother in the Trenches to Another by Rachel S. Donahue Honest, funny, and encouraging, this collection of “mom poetry” is written by a mother in the trenches of motherhood as a means of encouraging other moms. It’s a perfect gift for any mother who needs a pick-me-up from a kindred spirit. Real Poems for Real Moms combines traditional poetic forms (like sonnets, a limerick, and haikus) with playful concrete poems, free verse, and a couple of forms the author made up because they suited her. Motherhood is messy, beautiful, hard, and rewarding all at once.
TLDR: Any lover of words or bearer of children is bound to find a giggle or two within these pages, along with a knowing nod of affirmation.
Dear Mother: The Hot Mess of Motherhood by Bunmi Laditan This first collection of poetry from bestselling author Bunmi Laditan captures the honesty, rawness, sheer joy, and total madness of motherhood. With the compassion and wit that have made her a social media sensation among mothers around the world, Laditan puts into words what so many of us feel but can’t quite express. For mothers who love their children unconditionally but know what it is to feel crushed at the end of those long days, Dear Mother is like a warm hug that says, “I get it.”
TLDR: A truly funny, yet realistic look at motherhood. Bunmi will remind you that you are not alone in your chaotic and wonderful journey of motherhood.

Yuliya and Oleksii enjoying a warm meal in the home of Joris Voorhoeve
Escape from Ukraine A Single Mother’s Journey to Freedom with her Son ARTICLE BY MIKE GERARD Last month, Yuliya Kryzhanouskaya and her nine-yearold son, Oleksii, were forced to flee Kiev, Ukraine due to the onset of war. We heard about Yuliya from Laguna Niguel resident, fashion designer, and Pico Rivera Rotary Club member, Tatiana Shabelnik. Committed to helping Yuliya and Oleksii, Tatiana addressed the Laguna Niguel Rotary Club and contacted other Rotarians around the world. Laguna Niguel Rotarians, Tatiana, and a few of her friends made personal donations to help. Yuliya and Oleksii were relieved once their bus departed for Poland. But that relief was short-lived when, upon arrival, they faced difficulties because

Yuliya was born in Belarus and holds a Belarussian passport. Yuliya has resided in Kiev since 2012 and her son was born in Ukraine. Through sheer perseverance, Tatiana eventually connected with Joris Voorhoeve, a chairman of the OpenDoor Ukraine Foundation in the Netherlands— and the Netherlands’ former Minister of Defense. Table for Ten, orchestrated annually by Kristin Martin and KM Productions for deserving non-profits, held its 16th annual culinary extravaganza at the Festival of Arts/Pageant of the Masters grounds in Laguna Beach on March 6, 2022. More than 300 gourmet food and wine lovers attended the sold-out event, with guests enjoying scrumptious multi-course tableside from 30 talented chefs, along with superb wine pairings and tables uniquely decorated by each restaurant. A tempting silent auction was held during a lovely reception prior to dinner on the Festival grounds that featured area chefs and wineries offering delicious hors d’oeuvres and premium wines. The 52-bottle Bottle Shock Wine Tree opportunity drawing drew brisk ticket sales, with the winning ticket going to Dave Hoff. His wife, Traci Hoff, was the winner of the Heads or Tails game $500 prize - a very lucky couple, indeed! Supporter and wine connoisseur Mona Lee Nesseth donated the wines, valued at $3,672. The event’s Honorary Chef, Ugo Allesine of Prego Restaurant, was honored by Pascal Olhats, the event’s Chef Scholarship Chair, whose culinary scholarship program was the recipient of the evening’s proceeds. He lauded Allesina for his culinary skills as well as for giving his time and energy to a multitude of charitable causes in Orange County for many years. The live auction, led by spirited auctioneer DawnMarie Kotsonis, once again showcased an overnight villa stay at Pelican Hill Resort, including spa treatments, golf, and a chef’s dinner for 10, as well as dinners offered by participating chefs in the winners’ homes. Included were Ugo Allesina of Prego Restaurant, Chris Tzorin of Taste Collective, Brandon Hall of Thyme Well Spent Catering, and Jonathan Stanley of Dana Point Yacht Club. The designated charity this year was the Pascal Culinary Scholarship Program, which creates grants for culinary arts students in Orange County. The program works with Saddleback Culinary Arts College, Orange Coast College Culinary School, and chefs currently working who would like to go back and further their culinary arts dreams. Pascal Olhats, who launched the program, said, “The scholarships provide monies to offset or cover the students’ tuition, fees, books, and equipment. The college foundations select the recipients based on need and merit.” Along with Fund-A-Need monies raised, more than $300,000 in net proceeds was realized, which will provide grants to deserving culinary arts students through the Pascal Culinary Scholarship Program.

Carol Walsh Founder, Tennis Serves Others and Mark Spearman
Carol Walsh moved to Laguna Niguel with her husband and young family just nine years ago, but the native San Diegan has made a big difference in the lives of many since then. A volunteer for philanthropic causes for as long as she can remember, Walsh fosters animals and has been a board member of several charitable causes. The avid tennis player and stay-at-home mom of two joined Laguna Niguel Racquet Club soon after relocating to Orange County and wanted to help the community in some way. She describes organizing the charitable organization Tennis Serves Others as a truly spiritual experience. “The whole concept came together very quickly,” said Walsh. With support
TENNIS SERVES OTHERS
from fellow club members, and Laguna Niguel Racquet Club owner Mark Spearman, Walsh diligently prepared the organization’s bylaws and board structure. Tennis Serves Others was born in 2016. The organization’s motto? Play Tennis, Serve Others. Love All. Today, Tennis Serves Others (TSO) has 140 members from 10 tennis chapter clubs across Orange County and their signature fundraiser is an annual Wimbledon Gala and Tennis Tournament. With tremendous support from Laguna Niguel Racquet Club owner Mark Spearman, the events raise funds for charitable causes both locally and worldwide. Walsh says the Wimbledon-inspired gala and tournament, held each June at the Laguna Niguel Racquet Club, is their premier event. About 80 women dress to the nines, compete for prizes in tennis competitions and bid on various auction items to support the organization’s selected causes. Carol credits Spearman for the tournament’s success, “I am so grateful to Mark for his generous support. Not only does he open up the club every year for Wimbledon, but he supports us throughout the year by hosting other charitable events. His support was crucial at the onset, and still is!” In 2021, the Wimbledon fundraisers raised $64K and donated $32K to Fristers (Orange County teenage pregnancy support) and Forever with Us (helps families who have lost children to cancer). In the five years since the tournament began, $275K has been donated to organizations including International Sanctuary, Good Shepherd Shelter, Caterina’s Club, ACEing for Autism, and Mary’s Kitchen. Member Kelley McBride has served as Tennis Serves Others CEO since 2020, but Walsh continues to run the Wimbledon events and serves on the board as a founding member. Any 501(c)(3) organization can apply for funds through the organization’s website, and selected groups are invited to make a presentation. The final recipients are selected by a vote of the entire Tennis Serves Others membership. Walsh points out that there is no set requirement for the type of nonprofits that apply. They will consider all groups and causes. Organizers are busy planning for the next Wimbledon tournament and gala on June 25 to benefit Operation Help a Hero and Rose Again Foundation. The general public is invited to the tournament for a nominal admission fee (which of course benefits charitable causes) and the afternoon includes club member matches, a silent auction, music, and other festivities.

TSO GIVES BACK In addition to the annual Wimbledon events, Tennis Serves Others coordinates several other ongoing charitable programs. Tennis Serves Others GiveBack supports youth tennis--providing equipment such as teaching balls, racquets, and tennis carts. Donations are made upon request to local schools, nonprofits, or community youth tennis programs with a financial need. Quarterly round-robin tournaments are held at different member clubs to raise money and collect items for various nonprofits. These tournaments are open to nonmembers and friends with proceeds supporting Laguna Beach Food Pantry, Families Forward, ARK of San Juan Capistrano, and Extraordinary Lives Foundation to name a few. Other service projects include a holiday round-robin Jingle & Mingle when participants pack toiletry bags for the homeless while adopting local families in need and providing gifts for each family member. This tireless group prepares and delivers meals, makes blankets for local hospitals and families in Mexico, provides school supplies to children in need, clothing to homeless organizations, and financially supports foster and orphan care projects around the world. Tennis SOULS for Others was the first program operated by the organization—collecting gently used shoes for the disadvantaged locally and in Mexico and Africa. The program is still going strong with collection bins in tennis facilities throughout Southern California. Recognized and honored by the USTA, the nonprofit celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2021 and received the Top-Rated Great Nonprofit seal that same year. McBride says, “When I think about all that TSO accomplishes, I’m just amazed; and grateful!” tennisservesothers.org

Enjoy wood fired grilled seafood, hot and cold tapas, local meats and seasonal, locally sourced produce. San Juan Capistrano's moderate climate mimics that of Spain's, making for a perfect match of culinary offerings. The bar offers Spanish wines and Spanish influenced cocktails that honor Spain's olives and legendary gin and tonics. Enjoy gorgeous outdoor dining with live entertainment Thursday thru Sunday.
