It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community-focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our community. Whatever your goals might be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things to making a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness, and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind, and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health, and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

Perspire Sauna Studios brings Infrared Sauna Technology to Laguna Niguel and Dana Point ARTICLE BY MIKE GERARD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY PERSPIRE SAUNA STUDIOS
Perspire Sauna Studios™ is taking the wellness industry by storm. And, lucky for us, there are two locations locally—Laguna Niguel and Dana Point. Unlike traditional saunas which heat up the air, Perspire uses state-of-the-art Infrared (IR) Sauna Technology to heat your body directly without warming the air around you. Infrared waves penetrate the skin, muscles, joints, and tissues to improve blood circulation and oxygen flow, and help detoxify the body. They also help to remove impurities inside fat cells where the body stores waste and harmful toxins such as cholesterol and heavy metals.
In addition to Infrared, the studios include medical-grade Red Light Therapy in every 40-minute sauna session. Red Light Therapy (RLT) utilizes low-level laser light that safely penetrates the body’s surface tissue to energize cell regeneration and reduce inflammation. This combination of RLT and IR therapies provides an amazing wellness treatment to help alleviate pain and stress. To learn more, visit perspiresaunastudio.com or call (949) 446-8690 (Laguna Niguel location) or (949) 427-7660 (Dana Point location). JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/L AG UN A N I G UE L

JEANINE ANDRADE, PE DEPARTMENT CHAIR
Jeanine Andrade, the Physical Education Department Chair and teacher for middle school girls at St. Anne School in Laguna Niguel, knows the important role a coach can play in the lives of young people. While attending an athletic magnet elementary school in San Diego, Jeanine was inspired by her PE teachers, who were instrumental in helping Jeanine recognize her talents outside of being an athlete. “They were the first people to tell me that I was about something. They were the first ones to see me as more than just an athlete,” remembers Jeanine. As a nine-year-old athlete running for the San Diego Swift Track Team, Jeanine learned about the importance of developing a strong work ethic. At John Muir High School, she was coached and mentored by world-renowned distance runner Nolan Shaheed, who turned her love of running into a lifelong passion. While on the team, she had the opportunity to meet Florence Griffith Joyner, “Meeting Flo-Jo, I thought, ‘Oh my goodness. I can do that. I can be a runner.’” This confidence in her ability as
a runner, combined with the encouragement from her English professor, Beverly Tate, led her to earn a bachelor’s degree from UCLA, followed by her current path to earning a master’s degree in Kinesiology. Through these experiences, Jeanine has gained a passion for teaching and sharing her knowledge of fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness with young people. For the past eight years, Jeanine has played an integral part in the education of St. Anne students by engaging them in meaningful lessons, using athletics, movement, and different forms of exercise to celebrate wellness and foster a positive body image and good health. Perhaps Jeanine’s greatest contribution to St. Anne is her creation of a middle school elective, Mind F.I.T., which explores the relationships between how the mind and body function and respond to food and nutrition. Students analyze food labels, create mindfulness survival tool kits, explore the benefits of heart-healthy walking field trips, and understand the importance of balancing and nurturing mental and physical health. Through the project-based course, students learn the importance of balancing and nurturing mental and physical health while gaining an acute awareness of the advantages of mindfulness. As a girls’ PE teacher, Jeanine is intentional in the lessons she prepares. Last year, for International Women’s Day, she used a fitness-oriented obstacle course to inspire her students to explore and celebrate resilience and strength and discussed the importance of challenging stereotypical images of women all over the world. Jeanine also shares her love of running with her students as the cross country and track coach at St. Anne. She teaches her team that it’s not about winning the race, but the journey that running takes you on, “You don’t have to be the best athlete. You don’t have to be the most skilled athlete. You just have to work hard and grow.” As a mother, teacher, and coach, Jeanine hopes to set the same example of hard work, determination, and perseverance that her mother did for her and her four sisters. Most importantly, Jeanine hopes that all of her students and her daughter Zeal, a 7th grade St. Anne student, will graduate with a positive awareness of their health and the confidence to know their strengths. st-anne.org

HENRY THE THERAPY DOG 24
G IV IN G BAC K | WEL L NESS
“A truly great dog makes us better humans.” As Steve Booth, Henry the Therapy Dog’s handler, so accurately articulates, there’s something inherently special about the selfless, devoted nature of man (and woman’s) best friend. Henry the Therapy Dog, a traveling canine companion who has responded to over 700 events across California, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas since 2015, is certainly no exception to this belief. Beyond his undeniable adorability, the 8-year-old Golden Retriever has touched the lives of children and adults alike in their most vulnerable moments. Henry is a certified Therapy Dog with Pet Partners (2015), certified Crisis Response dog with HOPE AACR (2016), and Trauma/Peer Support dog with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (2017).

HENRY THE THER APY DOG
Henry’s story as a therapy dog began when Steve happened to be at a cardiac rehabilitation facility on the day a group of therapy dogs also made a visit. Steve recalls the instantaneous impact the dogs’ visit had on the patients and staff, visibly lifting the spirits of everyone they came across. Steve knew then that Henry’s compassionate nature would be a perfect match for comforting those in need, and that he needed to share his loving spirit with as many people as possible. Henry and Steve promptly began training for duty. “Therapy dogs support a person’s mental health by providing attention and comfort,” says Steve. “Their sweet demeanor and unconditional love have a therapeutic benefit to those who face difficult health, or emotional challenges. Certified therapy dogs are widely used to offer calmness, affection, and comfort to people in need.” Henry and Steve’s first official mission was visiting children undergoing chemotherapy treatments at the Kaiser Pediatrics Oncology Unit in Anaheim, California. Other hospital work has included visits to St. Joseph Hospital and UCI Hospital. The dynamic duo has responded to the scene of numerous traumatic events and natural disasters, including floods, fires, mudslides, and earthquakes. Henry has comforted victims and first responders of events like the Las Vegas shooting, the Yorba Linda plane crash, the OCC Memorial following a helicopter crash, fatal car accidents, and school deaths. In 2017, FEMA flew Henry and Steve to Texas to help overtaxed FEMA workers deal with the aftereffects of Hurricane Harvey. The heartfelt feedback they receive is reassurance they’re fulfilling their calling. The most common responses Henry hears are sentiments such as, “You just made my day,” and “I really needed you today.” Wherever life’s unpredictability and fragile nature takes them, it’s safe to say that both Steve and Henry feel equally grateful for the people they meet—and each other. As his trading card aptly proclaims, “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself,” to which Henry is undoubtedly a living testament.

Daring Greatly by Brené Brown The subtitle of this book says it all: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead. Every day of our lives reveals uncertainty and doubt. Whether we are entering into a new relationship, an important business meeting, or a difficult parenting challenge, we must find the courage to be vulnerable, and open our hearts, to engage with these situations effectively. Clearly, putting ourselves out there creates the risk of criticism or pain. But, from the outside, we realize that nothing is more hurtful than wondering what might have been.
TLDR: Daring Greatly is a powerful lesson in letting ourselves be seen. It will spark a new spirit of truth—and trust—in our organizations, families, and community.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens After 2 ½ years on the NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller List, this engaging novel is scheduled for release as a major motion picture this summer. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village. So, in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect Kya Clark. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh. Owens’ debut novel reminds us that we are forever shaped by our childhood, and we are all subject to the secrets that nature keeps.
TLDR: Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder.

A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park This book is based on the true story of two eleven-year-olds in Sudan—a girl named Nya and a boy named Salva. Nya fetches water, twice a day, from a pond that is two hours walk from her home. Salva becomes one of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan, separated from his family by war in the 1980s and forced to cover the African continent on foot searching for a safe place to stay. Salva is a survivor who survives starvation, animal attacks, and disease. His story intersects with Nya’s in an astonishing and moving way.
TLDR: Salva, a poor Sudanese refugee to the US in the 1990s, returns to Africa to drill deepwater wells in remote villages in need of clean water.
Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert Big Magic was an instant #1 NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller for good reason. For anyone looking to get their creative juices flowing, this book is a must-read. While Elizabeth Gilbert’s books have inspired and empowered countless numbers of readers for years, this one is truly special. Gilbert shares her own creative process and helps us discover the “strange jewels” of creativity that reside within each one of us. Whether you want to write a book, paint a picture, or just open your eyes to the beauty all around us, this is a great read.
TLDR: This book is the key to unlocking the hidden creativity within. Learn the attitudes and approaches needed to live our most creative lives.

MAINTAINING YOUR GLOW SKINCARE TIPS FROM GOLDEN COAST DERMATOLOGY
“THE PATH TO GLOWING, HE ALTHY SKIN IS DE VELOPING A CONSISTENT SKINCARE ROUTINE AND STICKING WITH IT. IN SKINCARE, THE NAME OF THE GAME IS PRE VENTION.”
The path to glowing, healthy skin is developing a consistent skincare routine and sticking with it. In skincare, the name of the game is prevention. While we can try to “reverse” or undo damage to our skin, it is an uphill battle and can be difficult to fully achieve desired results. Follow our tips below to keep your skin looking healthy and fresh:
STICK TO A CONSISTENT SKINCARE ROUTINE: A good skincare routine is one that you can do every day and one that isn’t overly complicated. You really just want to make sure you are using a gentle cleanser and a good moisturizer. In the morning, you also want to apply a good sunscreen as your final step before heading out the door. Gentle products will be free of surfactants and will usually say things like soap-free, dye-free, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores). It is also important to use warm water and to gently rub the cleanser into your skin. Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and rubbing too hard can be irritating. After washing, you want to pat dry (also to avoid irritation). While your face or body is still a little damp is the best time to apply your moisturizer. This helps the skin absorb the moisturizer better. We will talk more about sunscreen in our next tip. CONTINUED >

APPLY SUNSCREEN CONTINUOUSLY THROUGHOUT THE DAY: It can’t be overstated just how important sunscreen is to any skincare routine. You want to apply about a teaspoon to your face and an ounce (about a shot glass worth) to your body. Sunscreen should also be reapplied every 2 hours if you are still exposed to the sun and every 90 minutes if you are next to a large body of water. Look for broad-spectrum sunscreens that are SPF 30 or more, these will help protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Also, the active ingredient in your sunscreen should include zinc or titanium. These sunscreens are known as mineral or physical sunscreens and are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Using a good sunscreen and using enough of it will help slow signs of aging (wrinkles and discoloration) as well as protect against skin damage that can ultimately lead to skin cancer.
HYDRATE! A final important tip to keep your skin looking young and fresh is one that is so simple, it often gets overlooked. Drinking the right amount of water every day will help carry nutrients and oxygen to your cells as well as flush out toxins from your body. The amount of water you need can vary for each individual, but a general rule of thumb is around 64 ounces a day. Don’t forget that you can also get water from many fruits and vegetables (watermelon and spinach are almost 100% water by weight). The main key here is to just not become dehydrated. If you are feeling dizzy or weak or just plain thirsty, drink some water and continue to do so throughout the day. Remember, healthy skin starts from developing a good skincare routine so that you can prevent skin damage before it starts. Long days in the sun without sunscreen will eventually catch up with you, so try your best to stick with the tips above, and your skin will thank you later.
