The holidays are here! As the spirit of the season surrounds us, we often try to recreate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all. This month, we highlight the magic of the season and how our community helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love.

Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Annual Capistrano Lights Opens December 3 Enjoy this Historic Setting with New Holiday Traditions ARTICLE BY BARBARA KIMLER Capistrano Lights returns to historic Mission San Juan Capistrano on select evenings from December 3 through December 30, 2022, with several new offerings. Tickets go on sale November 1 and include all-day admission, multi-language Capistrano Lights audio tour and holiday programming from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. nightly. The opening night on December 3 will feature a special welcome by Mission San Juan pastor, Reverend Monsignor J. Michael McKiernan and a reading of The First Christmas by board member Vicky Carabini. The nightly musical and tree lighting program begins promptly at 5:05 p.m. featuring three new songs this year.

AMERICAN BALLET THEATER’S THE NUTCRACKER RETURNS TO SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS
You know the holiday season is here when The Nutcracker performances begin to dot the calendar in cities across the country. Young ballet students in dance studios everywhere work tirelessly as they prepare to be a part of this timeless classic. The story for The Nutcracker Ballet is loosely based on a book called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King written by E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816. The story tells the tale of a young girl who befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve and wages a battle against the evil Mouse King. Pyotr Tchaikovsky composed the score and the ballet’s first performance hit the stage in the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1892. While Tchaikovsky’s score was widely praised, the ballet itself was not a hit at its onset. After the 1917 Russian revolution, many experienced Russian ballerinas came to America—and with them came The Nutcracker. Here, the ballet became “Americanized” as the Russian artists, embracing a new culture of freedom, began to adapt the ballet to fit their new lifestyle. Tchaikovsky’s beautiful score also helped to boost the ballet’s popularity after Disney released its huge hit movie, Fantasia, in 1940. Fantasia featured music from the Nutcracker Suite and America fell in love with it. The first performance of The Nutcracker in America was given by the San Francisco Ballet on December 24th, 1944, and the timing could not have been better. Fantasia had left its mark and World War II was coming to an end in Europe. At the same time, wooden nutcrackers became popular in America as soldiers returning home brought the figurines back with them as gifts for loved ones. The rest is history.

gift guide What to get your loved ones? We’ve curated some fun gifts for your loved ones who have everything
Oh, the holidays are here again! How does time pass so quickly? Last December seems like yesterday—and everything in between then and now is just a blur. If you’re like me, the holiday season is a focal point of each life-year passing. Ideally, as we wind down through the month of December, we’d have all the time we need to thoughtfully reflect on the year gone by. We’d tally our accomplishments and promise to do better in the next year to come. Better yet, we’d create an action plan to help ensure our personal achievements, growth, and success in the year to come. To effectively complete this self-improvement assessment, we need to take the time to do some good old-fashioned soul searching—preferably in a peaceful, quiet, and serene setting. A rocking chair and a crackling fireplace would be a good place to start. But we never seem to find that time in December, do we? Once Thanksgiving passes, the eye of the holiday hurricane is upon us… and it does not relent until the final whistle of the Rose Bowl game. For me, it seems to kick in right around the moment that last bite of pumpkin pie goes down at the Thanksgiving dessert table. In the back of my mind, I know chaos is coming, yet it still seems to catch me off guard every year—as if our thoughts are not consumed enough with vacation plans, family gatherings, special events, holiday parties, and decorating. On top of all that—and intermittently lost in the shuffle—we still need to address the ultimate dilemma of what gifts to give our loved ones.
Selecting the right gift for each of our loved ones is probably the most challenging holiday decisions we must make; and these decisions deserve our attention. Why is it that we always procrastinate on this seemingly most important element of our holiday to-do list each year? After all, isn’t the holiday season supposed to be all about giving? Wouldn’t it be easier if the holidays were not so commercialized? This question reminds me of one of my favorite holiday TV specials as a child: the 1965 animated classic, “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” As a middle child in a family of eight kids, I will always cherish the memories of gathering around the old Zenith with all my siblings and downing a fresh cup of hot chocolate (with plenty of marshmallows, of course). That Peanuts holiday special—along with Rudolph and Frosty—was a highlight of every Christmas season. To this day, the message of that program, in particular, sticks with me. Charlie Brown’s confusion and frustration with the meaning of Christmas was eloquently addressed when Linus stepped onto the stage, blanket in hand, and said, “Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.” Linus nailed it... and his oration reminds all of us that Christmas and the holiday season has very little to do with material gifts. So don’t stress it, enjoy it! After all, it’s the thought that counts. Here’s to finding the quiet time needed to reflect on 2022 and prepare for a great 2023. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

DIRECTIONS Add oil to the bottom of a pot and melt over medium heat. Add popcorn kernels and place lid on top of the pot and heat over medium heat until kernels are popped, shaking pan occasionally. Melt butter in a separate dish and add seasonings. Pour on top, and munch.
