ABOUT

YOUR

BACKGROUND.

I was born in Portland, Oregon, but spent most of my life in Washington state. I was raised in salons and opened my first one at 19 years old. I have a passion for beauty and body products, and so I created another company in 2008 called Liquid Sunshine which was an Organic Airbrush tanning salon. I wanted to provide a healthier option to tanning and offer an organic spray tan to my community. At 26 years old, I was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. Life came to a halt. I was blindsided.

ARTICLE NATALIE NEECE | PHOTOGRAPHY OMAR ARAIZA PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATION: ARIANE BRITTANY KITCHEN MISSION HILLS

I was living my life one day thinking I was young and healthy. I fought the cancer conventionally at first until the results just weren’t successful, and I opted to quit chemotherapy and start holistic medicine after a radical double mastectomy and full hysterectomy. I went into remission within months

of seeing Dr. Conway in Vancouver, Washington and decided I needed to share my story. I believe my calling is to share with people that they don’t have to be afraid to do their treatment holistically, that there are cures and options that are safe and that work. After spending a lot of time researching and speaking to so many experts, they concluded that my breast cancer actually started in my armpit and was caused by my antiperspirant deodorant. WHAT IS AUNTIE & ME MATCHA BEAUTY? It’s real, raw natural body products. That simple. No more wondering if you are poisoning yourself or your family when you reach for your deodorant or any of our products. My real passion is to educate people about the dangers of their current body products and help them limit their toxic load, one product at a time. This is why I started Auntie & Me Matcha Beauty. I wanted to share my all-natural recipes of deodorant, detox bath salts, facial toners and wide array of pure essential oil aromatherapy with the world.

HOW DID AUNTIE & ME COME TO BE? I was working in the commercial kitchen design and sales world, and even though I loved it, it just wasn’t working for me anymore. So, one day I found myself without a job, and I realized I have a talent. I love to make natural stuff for myself and my loved ones, so why not try making it for everyone? I have perfected my natural deodorant over the years and knew people would love it, but I wanted to share the other beautiful things I could make. So I started buying ingredients, and it all started in my home kitchen. Now we have an office/lab and make everything there. It’s been incredible, the response from our customers. WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS DO YOU PROVIDE, AND WHAT IS YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCT? We offer a wide variety of products now, even though we started with the humble deodorant, which is still a customer favorite. We have a great selection of deodorants to choose from as well as facial masks, scrubs and toners, and all-natural bug spray. I’d say our most popular items currently are the therapeutic-grade essential oil rollers and aromatherapy sprays. WHERE CAN WE FIND AUNTIE & ME? We are currently at three farmers markets in San Diego as well as two retail locations and growing and online at AuntieAndMeBeauty.com. Find Auntie & Me locally at: North Park Farmers Market: Thursdays from 3-7:30 p.m. La Mesa Farmers Market: Fridays from 3-7 p.m. Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market: Sundays from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. February 2019 | La Jolla Lifestyle

LA JOLLA IS KNOWN FOR ITS GORGEOUS SCENERY OF THE COVE AND SHORES, BUT THERE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST THE SEA. The community is filled with artists who will be showcasing their work at the La Jolla Community Center this February and March. The La Jolla Community Center offers many activities including its new art series with the Allied Artists Association. The Allied Artists Association of San Diego is a community of award-winning artists founded by world-renowned artist Dottie Stanley. Dottie is an art instructor and cultural adviser for the La Jolla Community Center. Artists displaying their work from February through March 2019 include watercolor painter Ralph Kingery; Virginia Howett, who uses watercolors, photographs and digital imagery to spark curiosity in the viewer and evoke a meditative quality of the natural world; Gladys Jimenez, who uses different mediums, from oil, acrylic, collage and sometimes even organic items found in nature to create work that is spontaneous and full of loving energy; and Beverly Brock, whose photography themes include night, nature and creative images. RALPH KINGERY Ralph was born in Chicago, Illinois, and received the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in industrial design from the University of Illinois. Later, he received a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Arizona and practiced that field along with environmental planning for the next 37 years in Arizona and California. After his retirement, Ralph started watercolor painting in March 2013, enrolling in watercolor classes taught by Kate Fitzsimmons at the JCC in La Jolla. Around that time, he also joined the San Diego Watercolor Society, hoping to learn from its many experienced members. That has been a good move, and he has learned a lot from “PaintOuts” with other members of SDWS and from demonstrations at the monthly SDWS member meetings. Ralph is now a member of the Allied Artists Association of San Diego, showing his art at La Jolla Community Center, Liberty Public Market and at the San Diego Watercolor Society gallery. He served as SDWS’ first vice president for a year, then a year as president and is now president emeritus. As of October 2018, 57 of his paintings have been juried into the monthly SDWS member shows and the SDWS International Show (twice). His work has also been accepted into the Western Federation Watercolor Show in Eugene, Oregon, and is on temporary loan to the Office of the Mayor of San Diego. His paintings also have been exhibited at the Southwest Yacht Club, the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center and the San Diego County Fair. He has won awards for his art at the latter two venues, as well as at SDWS. His work has also been exhibited in Salamanca, Spain, and Avignon, France, under the auspices of the European Confederation of Watercolor Societies. CONTINUED >

ARTIST WATCH

(CON TI N U ED)

VIRGINIA HOWLETT Canadian-born artist Virginia Howlett received a BFA from Ohio State University and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Formerly an assistant professor of painting at Hampton University and at New Mexico Highlands University, she won a Mellon Foundation grant to create artwork in Oaxaca, Mexico. Virginia’s work combines lyrical images of nature to challenge our perceptions of place, time and space. She uses watercolors, photographs and digital imagery to spark curiosity in the viewer while evoking the intriguing meditative quality of the natural world. GLADYS JIMENEZ While she has always been a creative person—in high school she created the posters for art production department, the flyers and programs for the high school theater, and in her senior year she created the school mural—it was her summer trip to Europe in 1985 that inspired her to use oil as her preferred painting medium. Gladys' first juried art exhibit was in 1985 at the Barnsdall Municipal Art Gallery in Hollywood, California. She had a buyer for her painting the first day of exhibit. Although Gladys has taken the equivalent of two full-time years of fundamental art classes at CSUSM and Palomar College in San Marcos, California—where she studied under Michael Steirnagle, Ken Joudrey and Steven Curry, to name a few—she considers herself a self-taught artist. Gladys has exhibited her artwork in numerous juried art exhibitions and group shows. She has received numerous awards, including first place in visual arts by the national award-winning Bravura Magazine. Her artwork has been published in several publications and is collected by national and international collectors. La Jolla Waterman by Ralph Kingery

Gladys taught art in public schools for 18 years and is the founder of Boldly Creating Life Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to provide school supplies to elementary schools that do not have an art program. She is also the founder of Happy Scribbles, an art website for children. Gladys is a member of her local art associations. BEVERLY BROCK Beverly enjoys all photography, but her favorites are night, nature and creative. Whether it’s a hummingbird in search of dinner, star trails tracing lace patterns across the night sky or the luminous detail of a flowering cactus, Beverly’s artistry brings her special vision of nature to vivid life for your pleasure. “Most of all, it gives me a chance to use my senses to

create something that makes me feel like I’m seeing deep into my creative eyes. Then I’m able to share my vision with others and hope they enjoy what I see,” Beverly says. Because of her love of photography, she is always teach-

ing and learning. She is active in different photography clubs where everyone works together to help each other become better photographers. Sharing creative ideas with others and taking input she has received from judges has helped her to grow in her art and to win many awards. Beverly received a Certificate of Photography from the New York Institute of Photography in January 2000. She started out as a business called Kidnapper of Images photographing weddings and parties. FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO WINE, LA JOLLA CRAFTED WINES IS A MUST.

Swirl and Sip LA JOLLA CRAFTED WINES ARTICLE BRIANNA REIDE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED IN A CITY FULL OF DELECTABLE WINERIES, LA JOLLA CRAFTED WINES HAS TRULY OUTDONE ITSELF IN THE WINE COMMUNITY. For those looking for a sustainable approach to wine, La Jolla Crafted Wines is a must. In a winery where discretion for the environment is not sacrificed for taste, it has established itself as the finest urban winery of La Jolla. Lowell Jooste, the owner of La Jolla Crafted Wines, is the fourth generation in the South African wine industry. Having worked in the Robert Mondavi vineyard in Napa as well as his family’s vineyard in Cape Town, Lowell has a long history in the wine business. Six years ago, his family set forward to embark upon opening a winery in La Jolla, where he opened this urban winery. An urban winery is an up-and-coming concept in which the grapes from the vineyards of choice are sent to an urban location to produce the wine and is then CONTINUED >

sold and distributed at this location. This sets apart from the classic approach of traveling to a rural location to get the wine experience. Lowell’s approach to urban wineries differs because of their focus. “We serve our wines directly from the barrel into refillable bottles using our patented technology, thus avoiding the single-use wine packaging on which the wine industry relies,” he says. Since February 2016, La Jolla Crafted Wines has avoided the production and disposal of 45,000 single-use bottles. This barrel-to-growler approach allows for the wines to be less processed and contain fewer preservatives than wines that go through conventional bottling procedures. This allows for the wines to have a “fresher quality perceptible on the taste,” Lowell says. The charming tasting room is located on La Jolla Boulevard in Bird Rock. Your choice of outdoor patio

Its most popular wine, Russian River Pinot Noir, along with select rosés and chardonnays have won gold awards in several wine competitions. All of the wines are from Napa Valley and are served directly from the barrel at the La Jolla location. Reds, whites and rosés are available for tastings, including its flagship wine, the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Lowell advises to “be open to exploration and discovery in wine” while indulging in tastings. The expedition for appraising diverse wines is made possible by the winery's three choices of flights, each containing six wines. The flights change monthly, making every visit exciting and distinctive. Upon visiting this innovative winery, one can sign up for the wine club. “Members commit to receive a minimum of one growler fill each month from the pre-selected ‘Barrel of the Month.’ Members also receive 20 percent off all further wine to-go purchases, plus one complimentary monthly tasting,” Lowell says. For your next wine experience, rethink, reduce and refill at La Jolla Crafted Wines.
