With the right ingredients and barware, you can quickly create a drink that is sure to be a hit. The Summer Wind is a great place to start because this is the perfect drink on a hot day. The dill and the cucumber will add an attractive and intricate savory note to this thirst-quenching, herbaceous drink that will absolutely impress your guests.

Summer Wind Cocktail INGREDIENTS ++ 1 1/2 ounces dry gin ++ 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice ++ 3/4 ounce simple syrup ++ 1/2 ounce fresh cucumber juice ++ 1 pinch dill ++ Seltzer water ++ 1 thin, long cucumber slice, for garnish ++ 2 lime wedges (optional)
DIRECTIONS Mix all ingredients except seltzer water in a cocktail shaker. Add ice, then shake for 15 to 20 seconds. Strain into a glass over fresh ice. Top with seltzer and garnish with a long thin cucumber slice that’s wrapped on the inside of the glass. Add lime wedges before serving.

As you take in the gorgeous vistas while hiking, you may even see a creature or two, as well as the unique Torrey Pine tree itself! Not only can you get a great workout, but if you like plants you can hike the Guy Fleming Trail, which has information on all sorts of plant life in the area.

Best viewing for seals and sea lions in town One of the ultimate summer hot spots to hang out in La Jolla that was initially intended for kids to swim around in is the children’s pool beach that has completely been taken over by harbor seals. In pupping season, the beach is completely covered with the sleeping bodies of sea lions and seals. It’s rather entertaining to watch the young ones frolicking around in the water and then climbing onto the beach and the rocks, and no matter how many times you’ve seen them it never gets old!

NICOLE HEFFEL: I served in the United States Navy as a Master-at-Arms under both Marine Corps and Navy commands. I joined to serve my country and to afford college. After I earned my Juris Doctor from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. LJL: Tell us about your boutique law firm. NH: I focus on estate planning and elder law, and veterans benefits. I love it because I take a more proactive stance on the law. I have a great client base in La Jolla; second to none! LJL: How did you come to opening up your firm? NH: I've always wanted to. I did my homework and reached out to the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) after putting together a business plan. Then did some market research and dove in a month later. All grassroots efforts! LJL: What does being a veteran-owned small business owner mean to you? NH: It mean’s I made it! I overcame obstacles and continue to face my fears, but its one of the most exhilarating things I've done. LJL: How has military service guided you as you run your firm? NH: Fight, or flight mentality is what I’ve transferred over to my business. LJL: What have you done that you’re most proud of? NH: Helping fellow veterans in the community and hearing “ You’ve saved my life”. It's such a moving reward. LJL: What advice would you give to other veterans who want to open up a small business? NH: Seek help from the IVMF. They offer lots of support and programs for veterans who wish to own a business.
