FIRST I’D LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM THANK YOU LA JOLLA FOR SUPPORTING US OVER THE PAST YEAR-PLUS. We’re now celebrating our second year here in town being a part of your lives and telling your story. What an amazing place La Jolla is with such history, culture and a strong sense of community. We’re proud to play a small role in what makes La Jolla truly special! This month, it was tough but exciting issue to put this issue together for you. The tough part was simply that there are more stories to tell and amazing women to spotlight than we had room to cover in one month. Our goal this month was to share a slice of life from several difference makers in La Jolla from all walks of life. When you look at how diverse La Jolla is, this is no easy task. We hope you enjoy our feature on some of the women who’ve shaped La Jolla and will continue to for the years to come. And, I’d also like to take a moment to honor a few very important women in my life. My wife, Jennifer, who has been a huge part of the creative vision of La Jolla Lifestyle. She is

eyes and I look forward to seeing the wonderful young women she will grow up to be! Finally, I’d like to take a moment to honor my mother. Although she left us in this world nearly 16 years ago, her empathy, tireless patience and love for family will live on forever. We’d love to hear your story or nominations for people to feature who make our community better. Please drop me a line anytime online or email your thoughts.

Natalie Lewis - new owner

BEING A SAN DIEGO NATIVE, NATALIE LEWIS KNOWS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO AVOID THE SUN AND ITS DAMAGING EFFECTS. Her background is in the corporate world, but h er passion has always been for all things beauty—particularly sunless tanning. Many clients are pleasantly surprised that Blush is a spalike tanning experience—no neon lights or flashy oiled-down model posters. Her space is airy, refreshing and inviting. Its location in La Plaza offers privacy from the hustle and bustle of Girard but is still in a prime location familiar to many La Jolla locals. Natalie and her team are so proud to be a part of the growing La Plaza courtyard and love the European-inspired atmosphere. Natalie feels Blush Tan’s look and feel is relatable. Her models are real clients with real bodies. “Spray tanning is a fantastic option for so many different reasons–sun safety, a skin care treatment, the confidence to be in a bathing suit or before a big presentation at work—there are a million different reasons to be sprayed, and with our ability to mix a solution custom to each client’s undertones, each visit is a customized experience,” she says. “They relate to a variety of lifestyles and try to show that in our branding.” Tell us about any inspiration for your design and aesthetics at Blush Tan. “Less is more—simple, clean lines and light colors. Clean with a crisp twist—not your typical spray tanning experience.” What is the feeling you want each person at Blush Tan to walk away with? “The most confident you’ve ever felt in their own skin.”

Q& A

Jessie Medina Chef & Culinary Instructor never bland foods @neverblandfoods @jessiemedinaofficial

“

At NeverBland Foods the goal is to share our knowledge of local healthy ingredients, sustainable methods and cooking techniques to help improve the lives of our customers and give back to the community. Let’s create exceptional culinary experiences together.

How long have you been in San Diego? I’ve been in San Diego eight months. Left my corporate job as VP of Marketing to live in my dream city and pursue what I love!

What motivated you to start Never Bland Foods? Cooking has been my passion my entire life. I really wanted to do what I love and have the freedom to create. I wanted to merge my passion and do work that matters. I want to make a difference and inspire others to not work just for a paycheck. Time is precious and you never get it back, so I wanted to be doing what I’m supposed to be doing.

When you wake up in the morning what motivates you? Purpose is one of my biggest motivations. I want to inspire women everyday and lead by example. I want to show that if I can do it, they can too! Being a female entrepreneur is an amazing journey and I love to share what I’m learning! I want to inspire women to live out their purpose and be fearless. Also, my biggest role model is my mom. She sacrificed a lot to make sure I had a better life. Now I want to give back to my family, so I work hard to have more than enough to help loved ones and those in need. I think it’s important to be grateful and to give back!

Where do you see farm to table and food trends going in the next year or two? As consumers become increasingly aware of the benefits of sustainable fresh, organic foods businesses are introducing innovative solutions to problems needing addressed. We are moving away from mass produced, frozen foods and chain restaurants toward a culture of plant based and locally sourced ingredients. Much of the food & beverage industry, including Never Bland Foods, function as social enterprises designed to bring about social change. I believe it’s our responsibility as culinary professionals to educate our communities and customers about the health and environmental advantages of consuming local products. Locally sourced produce is far more flavorful than that being shipped long distances. Never Bland Foods is rekindling that love for fresh and organic here in our community. We seek to create a “food experience.” It isn’t just about getting food delivered. I love the concept of connecting with people and educating! Through my experiences, I’ve met people from all over the world, I’ve taught them how to make local food and try local beers, thus supporting local businesses too! Another experience I offer is a tour of Latin America through food. There are a few companies who are starting to

do that around the world, but no major players in San Diego...I seek to change that! Food is what brings people together and offering experiences such as this could transcend the local food scene. This is no longer just about making a profit, in the years to come, we are shifting toward making a greater impact, eating healthier, and protecting the planet we live in so that our future generations may enjoy it as well.

How do you want your clients to feel walking away from hiring you for an engagement? I want all of my clients to walk away with a NEW appreciation for food. I want them to dare to get creative in the kitchen and play around with different ingredients. When I hear comments like “ huh,” I never tried this before but I love it!” or “I never cooked with this because I didn’t know how...” those are my favorite moments!

Where did you get your inspiration to cook and create culinary dishes? My biggest inspirations were my grandmas. One of Spanish–Italian descent and the other Turkish. Both resided in Argentina where I was born. From an early age, I spent almost every day with them in the kitchen as they were teaching me things typically learned in culinary school. Monday was how to poach an egg, Tuesday was pasta from scratch, it was only later in life I realized what a unique gift I was being given. “ Organic” & “from the garden” are words that are trending today, but for me growing up in Argentina, it was the way of life. My grandma and I would walk everyday to the local market to get ingredients to cook for that day. She would always make sure no food went to waste, we would re-purpose any unused food for the next day or make compost out of it. I was unaware just how valuable this experience would be for me in teaching me everything I know about food today. As a teenager I started cooking for friends & family. I would constantly hear, “you need to open a restaurant” but I didn’t take them serious. Still, cooking was something I did every day. I would “plate” dishes even if for myself. Presentation has always been very important to me. Both my grandmas have passed now, but they truly left a legacy that I will honor and share with my future children and those who try my food. You will never find a store bought salad dressing in my fridge, as I never did in my grandma’s fridge. When I moved to the United States and tried Mexican food for the first time I was determined to learn this delicious cuisine. My next challenge was sushi and Asian food. My most recent obsession is Peruvian food. Cooking is an art to me and I love that it is a continuous learning process. It never gets boring or old. They say, do what you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. That’s how I truly feel when I’m in the kitchen (minus the dishes haha). –Jessie Medina

Any words of wisdom for young girls that are starting to ride? ALEXUS WILLSON: It’s to never take this sport for granted, and appreciate the opportunities you’re given. Also, never blame your mistakes on your horse, and, even if you have a bad ride, kiss your horse goodbye. LJL: How did you even start riding? AW: My mom is a horse trainer and got me into riding. LJL: That’s really cool. Do you remember your first show? AW: It was when I was 8-years-old, and it was at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. LJL: How do you prepare for a show? AW: Getting ready for a show consists of chaos. It’s a lot of packing and then me realizing that I always forget at least one thing. LJL: I know many athletes have superstitions. Do you have any? AW: My one superstition is that if I’m super nice to my competi-

tion, I always lose. LJL: During a competition what goes through your mind? AW: I just focus on riding my horse to the best of my ability. LJL: It definitely seems like that focus has paid off. Your track record is quite impressive.

LJL: Over the years how has riding made an impact on other parts of your life? AW: Through riding, I’ve met some of the most amazing people. It’s crazy how your inspiration can become one of your close friends, and I love that. LJL: Your favorite thing about riding is? AW: I get to bond with my horses and the friends I’ve made along the way. LJL: What’s your favorite memory throughout the years of riding? AW: My favorite memory so far is from 2017. I had worked so hard all year long to win a certain class, and when I got to the finals, I actually didn’t have a horse to ride. The horse I chose to ride had never done anything like this and was still fairly new to me. When I stepped foot into that ring, I thought to myself “I won’t win, but I’ll try to.” The next thing I know, I’m being called back for a work off, and I was in second place. After the work off I stood in the line just waiting. The moment I heard that I won I broke into tears. Everything that I’ve been working for had paid off, and I won a GSDHJA (Greater San Diego Hunter Jumper Association) 3-feet medal.

LJL: Long-term/short-term goals? AW: My long-term goal is to become an “A” show trainer. A shortterm goal is to qualify and win the junior hunter finals. LJL: What’s next on the horizon for you? AW: I’m graduating this June, and I plan to get a business degree. May 2018 | La Jolla Lifestyle
