La Jolla Community Foundation The La Jolla Community Foundation (LJCF) focused its 2016-2017 grant making on projects that improve the beautification of La Jolla and was also instrumental in the establishment of the La Jolla Maintenance Assessment District (MAD). Last November’s 3rd Annual Grant Awards Celebration at La Valencia Hotel provided three nonprofit organizations with a total of $40,000 in funding. This included the Golden Opportunity Capital Campaign with La Jolla YMCA ($18,500), The Ploughman Sculpture and Garden Restoration at Scripps Institution of Oceanography with the Regents of the University of California, UC San Diego ($18,500), and New Library Signage for the La Jolla Branch Library ($3,000). Over the past three years, LJCF has granted more than $100,000 to 13 programs enhancing community aesthetics in La Jolla, combined with an additional $548,000 in grants to special projects in the city, including the Murals of La Jolla. With the passing of the MAD last year, LJCF is entering very exciting times and plan to really focus on the mission to support major capital improvements to La Jolla. Members have voted to underwrite the development of a Master Plan for the Village and will work with the newly established 501(c)3 Enhance La Jolla. The Master Plan effort will be carried out in two phases. Beginning January 2018, they will start a process where several design teams, led by Paul Buss, a La Jolla architect and Vice Chairman of OliverMcMillian, will draft their concepts and ideas. Each team will be awarded a small grant to participate. Once completed, the selected concepts will be incorporated into the second phase where the remaining grant will be awarded for completing the Master Plan. Las Patronas Las Patronas is a philanthropic organization with a long history of giving. Since its inception in 1946, Las Patronas has donated more than $20 million to over a thousand charitable institutions in San Diego. The funds distributed to these organizations are generated through yearlong fundraising efforts and the annual presentation of the Jewel Ball, one of San Diego’s most enduring social, cultural, and philanthropic traditions. All funds raised by Las Patronas stay in San Diego County and are distributed to many small grass-root nonprofits as well as larger, more visible organizations. Las Patronas is committed to providing financial assistance to nonprofit organizations in San Diego County that provide valuable community services in the areas of health, education, social services, and cultural arts, and to continuing a tradition of service to enhance the quality of life in the community. Six members visited the San Diego Blood Bank in October for a tour of the facility and of bloodmobiles that now house Trima machines that facilitate platelet donations at mobile drives. These Trima machines were purchased through a generous financial donation from Las Patronas. During the last 14 years, Las Patronas has donated more than $201,000 to the San Diego Blood Bank in support of new bloodmobiles, blood delivery vehicles and disaster readiness. Major beneficiaries supported by Las Patronas in 2017 include A Reason to Survive, Center for Community Solutions, International Rescue Committee San Diego, La Jolla Playhouse,

La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club Chartered in 1986 during the formative years of the La Jolla Golden Triangle region (San Diego County), the organization of approximately 100 enthusiastic men and women united in fellowship provides a broad range of humanitarian service, building lasting goodwill locally and globally. Recent successes include Operation Pendleton - refurbishing barracks and meeting facilities at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Afghanistan Redevelopment - building schools, technology and other centers at university, and community-building programs in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Several members of the club walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain to raise money for specific projects. One of the main projects was painting and restoration work of an orphanage in Ensenada, Mexico. They partnered with Rotario Ensenada Todos Santos Rotary Club to accomplish the project. A project they’ve done for years and is very heartwarming is serving dinner to the VA Spinal Cord Unit. They do this project four times a year. Other efforts include members volunteering teaching a business/current events class at the Braille Institute in La Jolla, conducting a career fair for high school students at UCSD Preuss, and providing funding for wheel chairs for the disabled in Nicaragua. La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club alone participates in nearly $70,000 worth of projects annually. Their big community event and fundraiser called the Quintessential Festival is a beer festival at Nobel Park and Recreation Fields on Saturday, April 28, 2018. “For me, it is a vehicle to give back, to belong to a community, to travel abroad to help in places of need, and to make a positive impact on another person’s life,” says President Alex Monroe. “One of the most enjoyable experiences takes place every week when I walk into our Friday morning meeting and convene with my club, my friends, and my Rotary Family. They are men and women from all different walks of life, but are fueled by what we share in common. ichelle WinterNolte is always cooking up a storm. Whether a party of 2 or 200, she puts her heart into each gathering
she caters. This particular event was an intimate birthday dinner for a party of four. Michelle spoke with the hostess prior, determining the culinary direction and menu. Although she caters large events, she is most in her element where she can prep, cook and serve in a client's home. She shops for the freshest produce and will bring any equipment needed to prepare the feast, but will often use the host's pots, pans, plates and serving pieces. While cooking, she often shows the guests how to prepare some of the dishes, educating and involving the curious. Once dinner is served, she cleans dishes and appliances leaving the kitchen spotless. Add coconut, cilantro, and salt, mix well, let sit to meld the spices. Stir before serving.
