The Return on Investment
Investment is a word we usually associate with money, stocks, real estate and retirement accounts. But here on the Kona Coast, we’re reminded every day that the greatest returns often come from where we choose to invest our time, talent, treasure and trust.
This month’s issue highlights investment in its many forms.
We see it in BICP’s partnership with L.H.L. Feed Store. It’s proof that when local institutions invest in local businesses, our entire community benefits. A second location in South Kona isn’t just about expansion; it’s about access, resilience and belief in the future of our island.
We see it in travel and marriage. Sometimes the best investment you can make is stepping away together with the ones you love the most. You will see an example of this during our publisher's time at the Four Seasons Lāna’i. Strong families build strong communities.
We see it in Natalie Bruce’s work through HumanKINDgirls. She’s investing in identity, anti-bullying education and healing for vulnerable women across Hawai‘i. When we invest in people at their most fragile moments, the return can echo for generations.
We see it around the Easter table. Bread broken, meals shared, traditions passed down. Investment doesn’t always look like a ledger. Sometimes it looks like love.
And yes, we also explore financial stewardship with leaders like Kari Clark of Stadia Financial, helping families and businesses make wise decisions for longterm security. Financial clarity creates freedom. Whether it’s capital, courage, creativity or compassion. It’s what we invest in today that shapes the Kona Coast we hand to our keiki tomorrow.
The question isn’t whether you’re investing. The question is: what kind of return are you building? What legacy are you building?
Aloha,
TAYLOR

REDISCOVER CONNECTION AND PRESENCE AT FOUR SEASONS RESORT LĀNA‘I
ARTICLE BY JOHNNY GILLESPIE | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FOUR SEASONS RESORT LĀNA‘I
Living on the Kona Coast, we are surrounded by the beauty of ocean views, golden sunsets and warm breezes. It's a romantic paradise. For couples who live here, it can become commonplace, and the beauty can be crowded out by life's pressures. Work schedules, kids, commitments and the constant pull of responsibility can leave little room to pause, reconnect and be present with one another.
If you’re anything like me, on an island, it can feel hard to find a new experience to share with the one you love. I often find myself looking for a place that evokes mystery, discovery and adventure just for the two of us. This was the invitation of a three-day getaway to the Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i, little brother to the famed Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on our home island.
Lāna‘i is easily overlooked among the better-known Hawaiian islands. It sits just across the channel from Maui, nearby yet often unexplored. This is part of its magic. It's not on the way to anywhere. It's not a place you go to get something done. It is a place that quietly insists you slow down. This magic is shared by the Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i, a recent recipient of the coveted Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Award, the Guide’s highest rating.
The journey to Lāna‘i sets the tone of stepping away and unplugging. Picking up a connection in Honolulu, we were welcomed by Lanai Air into a journey that felt unique and personal. Landing on the island was quite a trip, soaring in over the majestic sea cliffs to touch down on the Lāna‘i City airstrip. Immediately upon disembarking, we were greeted by friendly Four Seasons staff and driven across the island on a peaceful twenty-minute ride. The rolling hills and open skies invited us to breathe in peace and look forward to a few days that would truly delight.
The Four Seasons Lāna‘i is about as boutique as a global brand can be. With a limited number of rooms, it offers exclusivity and luxury with an understated elegance. Set along the sweeping curve of Hulupo’e Bay, the expansive hotel lobby opens toward the ocean in a way that feels inviting. Gardens meander through the grounds, encouraging wandering rather than directing traffic. There is no rush or urgency, just space to unwind and connect.
Following the purchase of 98% of Lāna‘i’s land by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, his investment in Lāna‘i has been about excellence and restoring the natural beauty of the island. True to that vision, everything at the Four Seasons feels intentional and classy, not overstating the case, but with attention to every detail and quality where it matters.
What truly elevates the Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i is the staff. Knowledgeable, attentive and genuinely kind, the team has mastered a subtle art of luxury service that does not intrude. We felt seen without being hovered over, and remembered by name without being managed. It created a sense of ease that allowed us to fully relax into the experience as a couple.
We dined that first night at NOBU Lāna‘i, one of Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s world-class sushi restaurants. The food was exceptional, and the atmosphere remained warm and unhurried as we enjoyed the phenomenal Omakase menu. This is sushi dining at its best, and it's easy to see why Nobu's restaurants have become a global phenomenon.
Accentuating the established Nobu brand, Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i recently completed and opened Osteria Mozza Lāna‘i. Chef Nancy Silverton’s modern Italian cuisine offers its own version of comfort elevated by craft and care. The centerpiece of the restaurant is a massive stone pizza oven that had to be craned in through the roof. Though we were there for opening week, the wood-fired
pizza and creative aperitif’s of Osteria Mozza captured our attention and exceeded our expectations.
Mornings unfolded slowly, with lingering breakfasts overlooking the bay and no pressing schedule. We sipped coffee while watching the light change across the water. We enjoyed walks along the beach hand in hand without conversation needing to be forced. The quiet invited honesty and connection rather than filling space with noise.
Dining across the resort is an experience. Meals stretched longer as conversation deepened naturally. Every dish feels intentional, and every setting invites you to stay a little longer.
This is the slowing down that we needed, with room to unwind, think and connect without the hurry of daily life.
One of the most meaningful aspects of our stay was the balance between shared experiences and personal renewal. We chose horseback riding together, a beautiful adventure that brought laughter and a sense of shared discovery. The two-hour ride into the hills above Lāna‘i City offered expansive views of Maui and that little spice of adventure. Time spent exploring side by side creates memories that linger far beyond the moment, and that shared connection we long for.
There was also space for individual moments. An afternoon on the iconic Jack Nicklaus-designed Manele Golf Course offered me solitude and reflection. The world-class course, often ranked

among the state's No. 1 or 2 golf courses, features stunning coastal views and thrilling overwater holes. Truly a golfer’s paradise.
That same day, a spa visit provided my wife with deep rest and renewal. Her massage by Juvy was perfect, the arnica-infused oil with a gentle menthol scent. Coming back together afterward was fun with stories to tell and experiences to share.
Our stay at the Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i was not about escape. It was about choosing to invest in what matters most. As a local couple, we appreciated the opportunity to step away and experience something fresh and wonderful without going too far. Sometimes the most meaningful journeys are the shortest ones, and sometimes a brief flight across the channel is all it takes to rediscover one another.
We left with hearts full of gratitude, new memories made and a sense of time well spent. The Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i is truly a special place, one that has to be experienced, and our only regret is that we weren’t able to stay longer.
There is something powerful about going slow on purpose. In a world that constantly demands efficiency, choosing slowness feels almost rebellious, like you’re subverting the trend. Yet relationships flourish in those unhurried spaces, when there is time to listen without distraction and when presence replaces productivity. Connection has room to grow naturally rather than being squeezed into the margins.
Thank you, Lāna‘i. We'll be seeing you again.

Yielding the Greatest Returns
STADIA FINANCIAL’S CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER SHARES ABOUT EVERYDAY INVESTMENTS
Kari Clark has been part of Stadia Financial from the initial vision through the launch of the Investment Advisory Firm in Hawai‘i. Here is what she had to say when asked about investment and related concepts.
HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS?
Being part of building something from the ground up has been incredibly meaningful because it allowed us to shape the firm around our values from day one.
While many firms measure success by the number of clients they serve, that has never been our focus. We don’t count our clients as numbers; each individual and each business we work with represents a relationship, a family and a story. Whether someone has a large portfolio or is just getting started, they are equally important to us.
Our clients are not a statistic; they are our ‘ohana. We measure our success by the trust we build, the education we provide, and the positive impact we make in the lives of the families and businesses who choose to work with us. That commitment to relationships over numbers is what truly defines who we are.
WHAT DOES "INVESTMENT" MEAN TO YOU?
An investment is anything you commit your time, resources and heart to in order to create something meaningful for the future. Financially, that means making thoughtful, strategic decisions today to build security and opportunity tomorrow. Investment also means pouring into your family, community, values and personal growth.
Every day, we invest in relationships, health, children and our community. Those investments often yield the greatest returns.
WHAT DOES "WORTH" MEAN TO YOU?
When I think about worth , I think about impact and legacy. Financial worth is simply a measurement. True worth is what your life represents—the lives you’ve touched, the stability you’ve created for your family and the example you leave behind for the next generation.
In Hawai‘i especially, legacy isn’t just about assets. It’s about ‘ohana. It’s about values passed down, land preserved, traditions honored, and opportunities created for children and grandchildren. It’s about ensuring that future generations can continue to call these islands home and flourish here.
As an advisor, my role is to help clients align their financial investments with what they truly value. Money is a tool, but it should serve a deeply personal and meaningful purpose. When strategy and values come together, wealth becomes more than accumulation. It becomes a vehicle for security, generosity and lasting legacy.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH MARKET CHANGES?
Volatility is normal. Markets move in cycles. They always have, and they always will. Fear often comes from feeling out of control. My role is to bring clarity, perspective and steady guidance during those moments.
At our firm, we don’t chase returns. Chasing performance often leads to unnecessary risk and emotional decision-making. We believe you can achieve solid, meaningful returns with less risk when your investments are thoughtfully aligned with your goals. When a portfolio is strategically built around a client’s purpose, short-term market swings don’t carry the same emotional weight. We return to the plan, revisit the strategy and make adjustments only when they are intentional and necessary, not reactive.

BETHANY REID, PRIVATE CHEF AND MOM OF FOUR, SHARES HER 3-STEP MORNING ROUTINE
INVEST IN YOUR MORNINGS
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BETHANY REID
Starting the day off on my terms is one of the foundational ways I invest in myself. Committing to a very simple morning routine has given me a built-in time each day to connect with myself and prepare for whatever the day may bring! Getting up just a little earlier than the rest of the family gives me time to journal (always a swamp, bragg, gratitude, desire), move my body (getting my butt kicked on the mats), and, of course, eat.
GRANOLA RECIPE
This granola recipe has been my go-to for over 20 years. I began developing it in my early days of motherhood, when life was happening fast and so much was required of me. It has stood the test of time and is now the #1 requested recipe from my people.
While you can easily make this recipe your own, I love this rendition because it features coconut and honey, reflecting the flavors of our beautiful Big Island.
Ingredients
• 2 cups gluten-free rolled oats
• ½ cup unsweetened desiccated coconut
• ¼ cup diced pecans
• ½ cup sliced almonds
• ½ teaspoon Celtic Sea Salt
• ¼ cup coconut oil
• ¼ cup grass-fed butter
• 3 tablespoons of honey
• 3 tablespoons maple syrup
• 2 tablespoons water
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Directions
1. In a large bowl, mix rolled oats, coconut, pecans and sea salt.
2. Melt the coconut oil, butter, maple syrup, honey, water and vanilla extract in a saucepan.
3. Pour this over the dry mix and stir well.
4. Spread on a lined baking sheet and bake for one hour at 275°F, stirring every 15 minutes. If cooking on multiple trays, rotate the trays each time you stir to ensure even browning.
My favorite way to eat granola is with French yoghurt, Big Island Bees’ honey and lilikoʻi. I usually make a quadruple batch—it’s one of the few things I continually keep stocked in my family’s kitchen!
Xo, Beth.

KONA’S HUMANKINDGIRLS IS INVESTING IN CULTIVATING SELF-LOVE AND CONFIDENCE
BE HUMAN. BE KIND.
BY
Long-time Kona resident Natalie Bruce has spent more than 20 years in the beauty, fashion, film and music industries. Today, she continues to work as a makeup artist on Hollywood films and TV shows shot in Hawaiʻi, while heading up HumanKINDglow, a skin care brand with a purpose. Founded by Natalie three years ago in Holualoa, she serves as CEO.
“We are dedicated to redefining beauty, believing true beauty lies in the love and kindness we share with ourselves and others. By inspiring confidence with our products, our goal is to disrupt unrealistic beauty standards by enhancing natural radiance,” Natalie says.
Haku lei made by Aunty Toshua
Years ago, women’s magazines promoted a false idea of female perfection, and now social media provides a space for bullying those who don’t fit that image, she says.
Her extensive travels, including work in 21 countries worldwide, provided a perspective on how women everywhere struggle with self-esteem and how comparison becomes habitual. This awareness served as a catalyst for creating a company committed to uplifting women and girls.
“Even many celebrities deal with insecurities about appearance; it’s a human struggle no matter who you are,” Natalie says.
Girls between the ages of 11 and 13, she says, are especially prone to dwelling on what they perceive as physical imperfections while failing to appreciate unique qualities.
“At that age, their bodies are changing, acne is common, and bullying is prevalent in schools and online,” she says.
She speaks from experience, having struggled with insecurities during her teen years. “I grew up in New Zealand. I was really tall, and I had acne. While I was bullied in school, I also began modeling—doing runway—at age 13,” Natalie says. “I came to realize real beauty is kindness and kindness is beauty.”
She’s been practicing that mantra for years, and in 2023, she founded the non-profit HumanKINDgirls.
“This is my heart, my purpose: uplifting young girls,” Natalie says. “And always reminding them that comparison is the thief of joy.”
She accomplishes that with HumanKINDgirls programs offered here and elsewhere, including Oʻahu, New Zealand and Brazil, among other locations.
Sessions are tailored to each group or individual, with single-day, consecutive multi-day, or weekly programs that span five weeks. Most often, they are conducted in Natalie’s home or at schools.
“Numerous schools have participated, including Holualoa Elementary, Innovations, Hawaiʻi Technology Academy and Makua Lani Christian Academy. On Oʻahu, I was invited to present at Ho‘ola Na Pua (Pearl Haven), a safe-haven for girls 10 to 18 years—all victims of abuse and trafficking,” she says.
All workshops carry a theme: the power of words; uniqueness—there is only one you. To illustrate and inspire, Natalie leads discussions and shares examples related to the theme.
In one, she shares that butterflies cannot see their own wings, so they don’t appreciate their beauty. “That’s often the case with some classmates and friends. You have the power to show them by complimenting them on their special qualities, the beauty they carry inside and out,” she says.
Other props make a point, such as an arrangement of flowers in different shapes and colors, each unique and gorgeous. Another prop is provided by the girls themselves—their thumbs! “Look at your thumbprint, it is one-of-a-kind. You are unique. You are exactly who you are meant to be,” Natalie says.
Running a Spa day is all about providing self-care. While gift bags are given at each program (containing HumanKINDglow products and items donated by local businesses), this session includes hands-on application of the brand’s Hydrogel Mystery
Affirmation Face Mask Hydrate, Soothe & Glow. Each mask features an uplifting mystery word revealed once opened—Brave, Loved, Grateful, Brilliant or Kind.
“The masks are scattered around, and participants are invited to pick one, sort of like choosing a fortune cookie,” Natalie says.
The girls are encouraged to meditate on their word as the mask's healing properties take effect.
“I chose to have a Spa Day for my first visit to the girls at Pearl Haven—they need so much healing, so much love and kindness,” she says.
More love is provided by a portion of HumanKINDglow’s profits donated to HumanKINDgirls. Product purchases and/or donations help create a brighter, more equitable future for vulnerable youth, according to Natalie. HumanKindGlow.com.

A Kealakekua Building Finds New Life as L.H.L. Feed Store Opens Its Second Location
ARTICLE BY AMY CARLSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FLETCH PHOTOGRAPHY
In Kealakekua, life moves at a steady pace framed by green landscapes, cool mountain air and the familiar buildings along Hawaiʻi Belt Road. But often, these buildings themselves, and the stories behind them, matter just as much as the people and businesses that bring them to life.
CONTINUED >
Just outside Kainaliu, one such group of buildings remained largely unchanged for years as longtime tenants went about their daily business. When a decades-long ground lease ended, the buildings returned to their owners, who needed to repair them. What followed was a careful reinvestment that created space for a growing family business entering its next chapter.
But getting there would take time, so, in 2024, the property’s owners, a local family with Hawaiʻi roots, turned to Big Island Commercial Properties (BICP) for help. The property already housed a mix of retail, office and other businesses. The owners wanted to improve the buildings so those businesses could continue operating successfully. BICP, which has a history of helping clients turn properties around, crafted and proposed a multi-year improvement plan that focused on what needed immediate attention while laying the
groundwork for long-term stability. The first phase covered essential maintenance and infrastructure, including a new roof, with additional improvements planned and phased over time.
The owners also contributed directly to some of the work and remain actively involved in the property's care and upkeep. Just as important, BICP collaborated closely with both ownership and tenants to renegotiate leases, creating consistent rent structures, clarifying operating expenses and stabilizing cash flow for their client. By the end of 2025, the property had renewed momentum, which ultimately led to the grand opening of its newest tenant: L.H.L. Feed Store, a company that supplies feed, hay, fencing, medical supplies, and everyday essentials for livestock, pets and small farm animals.
“Everything just fell into place,” says Rachel Loando, who, along with her husband Tony, opened L.H.L. Feed Store just over 13 years ago. This second location opened almost to the day of that original anniversary. “It felt like it was meant to be.”
“There were a lot of moving parts,” says Tashanna L.K.O. LoSasso of BICP, who helped the Loandos find their space. “The timing had to be right. The Loandos needed to make feed and supply orders by a certain date, and everything had to align.” BICP worked closely with both the landlord and tenants to coordinate the transition, including helping the existing tenant, whose needs had changed, to vacate the space. “We got it done just in time.”
On the eve of their grand opening, Rachel wondered who their first customer at the new location would be, a simple question carrying the same mix of hope and resolve she felt when she and her husband, Tony, opened the first location in Kona all those years ago. At the time, they were raising their

family, with their boys competing in high school rodeo. Caring for horses and livestock took time, and sourcing feed locally often meant long drives and limited options. “We saw a need in the community,” Rachel says. “Back then, we took a chance, and now we’ve opened our second store.” Today, three generations of Loandos move through the second L.H.L. Feed Store. The scent of fresh hay hangs in the air, and the space feels alive. Feed lines the walls, ropes and collars are within easy reach, and a newly built, family-made farm-style stand anchors the area where customers gather. The shelves hold medicine and feed for just about anything. Rabbits, horses, sheep, goats, chickens. Hay, shavings and straw sit stacked and ready to load. There’s feed for parakeets, parrots, wild songbirds and even turtles. If they don’t have it, they’ll bring it in.
Rachel loves spending her days working alongside her kids and grandchildren. “Nothing matters more than family,” she says. “To have them here, wanting to be part of this and wanting to serve the community, it really touches my heart. Our kids work here, and during the busy times, nieces and nephews jump in. Even the grandkids help. It’s unbelievable what my family is capable of.”
For customers in South Kona, the Kealakekua location means fewer long drives and easier access to the feed they rely on every day. It remains a local effort at every step: a property owned by a local family, leased to another local family, guided by a locally owned brokerage, all serving a community made up largely of families like their own. That approach reflects Big Island Commercial Properties’ philosophy of working with
owners who see their property as an asset to be actively managed rather than passively held. “This was about stabilizing the property and positioning it for long-term success so that it can continue to support the community,” says James Augustine, owner and principal broker of BICP.
For the Loandos, that kind of support matters. Running a feed store comes with its own challenges, especially in Hawaiʻi. Shipping costs continue to rise, and keeping feed fresh requires careful planning. “Getting product to Hawaiʻi is expensive,” Rachel says. “We have to be smart about the way we order.”
Looking around the Kealakekua store, Rachel reflects on what she and her family built together. “Seeing what my family can do makes me so proud,” she says.
On the day of the grand opening in Kealakekua, the store was just about to open when the first customer pulled into the lot. They had driven from South Kona to pick up hay, feed and a few medical supplies for their horses. It was a simple stop, but a meaningful one.

Lokelani Dahl Blends Lomilomi, Dance and Aloha on Hawaiʻi Island
in Motion
By the time Lokelani Dahl places her hands on a client, decades of lived experience flow into the work—ancestral ties to Hawaiʻi, years of clinical massage training, deep immersion in Lomilomi and a lifetime of hula that shapes every movement. Lokelani, owner of Lanilomi Massage Therapy, offers customized bodywork from her brick-and-mortar studio in Kailua-Kona and through mobile massage along the Kona Coast. Her connection to Hawaiʻi is rooted in genealogy, culture and intention.
by Eric Rhodes
“While I wasn’t born and raised in Hawaiʻi, my ancestral roots here run deep,” Lokelani says. Her father’s ʻohana traces back to Kohala in the late 1700s, and her grandmother, Tūtū Haʻo, was born and raised in Pāʻia, Maui.
Lokelani grew up on the U.S. East Coast but says Hawaiʻi always felt present through family and movement, a constant thread in her life. Lokelani began her journey as a Polynesian dancer at age 11 with Hālau Hula I Kona Kai in Western N.Y., training in Hawaiian, Tahitian and Māori poi ball.
Later, in her 20s, she would come to discover fire dancing and eventually perform for 15 years with Island Breeze Productions in KailuaKona. Today she performs independently, offering hula, Tahitian and fire dancing for private events and celebrations along the Kona Coast. That background directly influenced her massage practice.
“The fluidity, rhythm and grounded movement of hula shape the way I move around the table,” she says.
However, her journey into massage therapy began unexpectedly. As a teenager, Lokelani was in an accident while riding her bike. Though she avoided serious injury, she spent time in physical therapy and chiropractic care.
“That experience was my first introduction to how supportive and impactful therapeutic bodywork can be,” she says.
At university, Lokelani initially pursued musical theatre but found herself drawn toward physical wellness. She considered becoming a physical therapist but was encouraged to explore other options. Massage therapy, she says, felt like the right investment.
“Massage became the perfect blend of anatomy, creativity, intuition and my desire to help others feel better in their bodies,” she says.
Photo
“KA MAKANI (THE WIND), THE GENTLE ʻALA (THE FRAGRANCE CARRIED IN THE AIR), AND HA (THE BREATH OF LIFE), ALL INVITE MALUHIA (OR PEACE) TO FLOW THROUGH THE SESSION. THESE ELEMENTS GUIDE EACH TREATMENT AND SUPPORT A FULL MIND-BODYSPIRIT RESET.”
She began her formal training at the Atlanta School of Massage, earning certifications in Neuromuscular Therapy, Integrated Massage and Deep Tissue.
In 2000, she moved to the islands to attend the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa on Oʻahu. Six years later, she relocated to Hawaiʻi Island to study Lomilomi at Aunty Margaret Machado’s school in Nāpōʻopoʻo, where she gained a deeper understanding of the spiritual and cultural dimensions of the technique.
“Aunty Margaret’s lineage and teachings profoundly shaped the heart of my practice,” Lokelani says, who then decided to stay on the Big Island.
That decision shaped both her personal life and professional path. Hawaiʻi Island is where she raised her daughters, built a career in therapeutic bodywork and reconnected with the cultural traditions that guide her healing practice.
Over a 20-year career, Lokelani worked in Atlanta, Tampa and across Hawaiʻi, gaining experience in diverse settings. Today, she offers Lomilomi, deep-tissue therapy, spa services and performance-focused massage for athletes.
If you haven’t heard about it, Hawaiian Lomilomi is a holistic massage, rooted in ancient Polynesian healing. It uses long, flowing, rhythmic strokes with hands, forearms and elbows to soothe the entire body, releasing tension and promoting harmony between body, mind and spirit.
“What I love most is how the natural elements of Hawaiʻi are reflected in the experience. Ka makani (the wind), the gentle ʻala (the fragrance carried in the air), and ha (the breath of life), all invite maluhia (or peace) to flow through the session. These elements guide each treatment and support a full mindbody-spirit reset,” she says.
She also integrates dōTERRA essential oils through Symphony of the Cells protocols, allowing clients to select targeted focuses such as Hormone Balance, Inflammatory Focus, or Lymphatic Focus.
“Clients often leave feeling lighter, centered and renewed—as though they’ve been carried and cleansed by the ocean itself,” she says. “These massages are functional and performance-focused.”
For clients new to massage, Lokelani recommends a 90-minute Lomilomi session. This length allows the body to fully relax. “Lomilomi is gentle, grounding and profoundly restorative.”
As a mother of two, including a child with multiple disabilities, she shares that her journey shaped her approach to care. “This lived experience has made me a more sensitive, compassionate and intuitive therapist.”
Her message to readers is simple and intentional: “Your well-being is worth prioritizing,” Lokelani says. “Sometimes transformation begins with simply slowing down and allowing yourself to receive care.”

UPHILL BATTLE
This past February, Hawai‘i’s fitness community gathered to compete in a grueling seven-mile course through Kona Coffee and Tea’s coffee fields.

Local Strength for Global Hope
“You train harder knowing there’s people waiting across the globe waiting for you to bring them hope.” — Jared Smith.
The event is aptly called “Uphill Battle.”
The course is designed to simulate the toll of trekking with heavy packs at high altitudes in the Himalayas. A blend of endurance and strength training makes this Hawai‘i's most iconic functional fitness event.
Athletes from every corner of the island—and the mainland—traveled to participate in this landmark 10th anniversary. Founders Tiger Hill and Blake Casteel inaugurated the event following their first trek. “We had a revelation that we're maybe not as in shape as we thought we were while struggling at 11,000 feet,” Hill said.
Beyond the physical challenge, Uphill Battle is designed to invite participants into a global investment. Upon crossing the finish line, the event leaders extend a formal invitation to join a trekking team, recruiting local athletes to invest their strength into some of the most demanding humanitarian needs in the world.
Event coordinator Jared Smith works among isolated Himalayan villages. These communities remain disconnected from modern civilization, lacking access to clean water, healthcare and basic necessities. Trekking teams bridge this gap, delivering vital humanitarian aid and a message of eternal hope.
“For athletes, one of the greatest things we can do is establish goals for ourselves, work really hard and finish the competition. But there's something profoundly powerful about pairing that discipline with giving somebody the Gospel for the first time,” Smith said. “You train harder knowing there's people waiting across the globe waiting for you to bring them hope.”

Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL
An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD

From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.
Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.
A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.
Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?
A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.
Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?
A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.
Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?
A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.
“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”
Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?
A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”
Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.
This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.
