"We are pollinating kindness all over town," said Mark Borella, artist and owner of Seeds of Happiness in Kirkwood. Every weekend in April, Flutter Hiders will hide butterflies, bees, and Seeds of Happiness smiles all over downtown Kirkwood. If you, a Flutter Hunter, find one of the precious clay art treasures, it's yours to keep. And make sure to scan the QR code for a chance to win a delightful surprise. This is the second year for the Flutter Hunt in Downtown Kirkwood. "I know of families who came from at least five other states to participate in the Flutter Hunt last year," said Mark. It's a great way to support the restaurants and businesses in Downtown Kirkwood and the surrounding communities. "We've had cities from around St. Louis and the region ask us to create a hunt for their town," said Mark. Clearly, this sweet little scavenger hunt can make a big impact on a community. "We are trying to teach everyone to relax and have fun. We want to encourage people to play. We want people to know that a small act of kindness can profoundly move somebody. Small and powerful is a lot better than large and lofty," said Mark. My favorite thing about the EXPLORE issue isn't about where you can go; it's about exploring what you can do to bring a feeling of sheer joy into your life. We love when you share your pictures with us on Instagram and Facebook. When you follow us and tag us on Instagram and Facebook, you'll BEE entered to win a BEE BOX from Seeds of Happiness - complete with a bee, a honey pot, and locally sourced honey. Happy Hunting!

Where Will You

Vince and D'Anne Weber
Vince and D'Anne Weber on their Boomerang bikes.
Steve and Abby Lanni with their Pegego Element bikes.
Damian Pritchard on his Pedego Avenue Commuter bike.
As Vince Weber, age 73, was planning his dream RV vacation, D'Anne Weber, age 67, was researching bikes for the trip. "From the minute I got on the Pedego Boomerang, I couldn't stop smiling," said D'Anne. "I felt like a 10-year-old." The Webers have wonderful stories of their many biking adventures. "We rode through Glacier National Park past the long line of cars waiting to get in the park. We met many bikers in Sturgis, South Dakota," said D'Anne. "The scariest adventure for us was riding The Route of the Hiawatha trail that runs through Idaho and Montana." The 15-mile-long trail has ten completely dark tunnels, one 1.8 miles long, and seven skyhigh trestles. It is one of the country's 15 "Hall of Fame" bike trails. Abby and Steve Lanni are active military emphasizing ACTIVE. When not on military duty, the couple looks for new ways to stay active outdoors. When the West Point grads decided to take a trip out west to celebrate
their 15th wedding anniversary, they knew the perfect gifts to give each other. "We wanted matching electric bikes, so we did our research and decided to visit Pedego in St. Louis. Bill and Carla took the time to help us find the perfect bikes. We spend as much time as we can on our Pedego Element bikes," said Steve. "I love my bike so much that I named it Zoomy. Naturally, Steve decided to name his Vroomy," said Amy. The couple recently purchased a larger RV primarily to give plenty of room for Zoomy and Vroomy. When Damian Pritchard retired as a teacher from North Glendale Elementary, he started working at Fleet Feet in South County. "I ride my bike to work, to the grocery store - everywhere a car would go," said Damian. "The technology allows me to travel long distances and arrive looking like I just stepped out of a car. I'm an avid cyclist, so this bike needed to look and feel like a traditional bike. Now that I own
a Pedego Avenue Commuter bike, there is not one day that I'm not on it. Rain, snow, or sunshine - I ride at least 20 miles every day." One of Bill's first jobs was assembling bikes in the stockroom at J.C. Penny, and Carla received a bike as a graduation gift from nursing school. It's interesting to think about how life creates a path that cycles back to small beginnings. This is the story of how Bill and Carla Sauerwein are making big strides to change lives as the owners of Pedego Electric Bike St. Louis. After 30 years as an attorney, Bill Sauerwein began searching for an encore career. "Being a lawyer was very rewarding, but it was time for another challenge," stated Bill. "I wanted to hit the refresh button and do something completely different." "I knew Bill wanted to make a change," said Carla. "He took a lot of time thinking about what he wanted to do next. Opening up a Pedego Bike store checked all the boxes." CONTINUED >

“UNTIL YOU TRY ONE, YOU CAN’T IMAGINE HOW ELECTRIC ASSIST BICYCLES RIDE LIKE REGULAR BIKES. IT’S CYCLING WITH THE ADDED BENEFIT OF PEDAL ASSIST.” -BILL SAUERWEIN
"I wanted to find a business that would provide a good quality of life," stated Bill. "I wanted the business to be something that Carla and I could do together, and I wanted to cater to a customer base of people our age. I knew I wanted to do something that allowed me to be outside and promote a healthy lifestyle. I also wanted to start a business that utilized an emerging technology." "It's surprising how seamlessly our prior professions translated into owning a bike shop," said Bill. "My law practice was based on building relationships and trust, giving good advice, and solving problems. As a Pedego Bike shop owner, people seek advice and consultation about these bikes and have questions about how they can change their life." A former pediatric nurse, Carla, describes the bikes' physical, mental, and social health benefits. "Cycling improves muscle strength and balance, which is important as we age. We have customers who haven't been on a bike in 30 years, and this technology allows them to get outside and enjoy life," said Carla. "Customers tell us this is their antidepressant. They share stories about where they ride, how far they go, and how they can do things they never thought they'd be able to
do. We hear transformational stories about how much weight they've lost and how their health conditions have improved since they purchased their bike." Before opening Pedego Bike in June 2019, Bill and Carla were avid road bike cyclists. "Cycling is one of the best ways to stay fit," said Bill. "Until you try one, you can't imagine how much Electric Assist Bicycles ride like a regular bike. It's still cycling with the added benefit of pedal assist. Pedal as much as you want and then use the technology when you need a little help getting over a hill or going long distances." Pedego's electric bike technology convinced Bill and Carla to open their store. "Our friend recommended that we try Pedegos on our vacation in Colorado. We spent an entire day riding across mountainous trails without getting completely exhausted. We would have never been able to do that on a traditional bike," said Bill. "After that day, I was convinced of the power of Pedego bikes to change people's lives. These bikes are about having fun and enjoying the outdoors, and it's wonderful to be able to share that with people." For more information, visit pedegostlouis.com

Let’s Explore Your Retirement
ARTICLE BY MARK FINKE, MBA, CFP®, AIF® PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
ex•plore. According to Merriam-Webster.com, explore means to investigate, study, analyze; to look into. We explore many things. Vacation destinations, new cars, home purchases, antique shops…the list is long. And I am sure many of you have at least given your retirement a passing thought. Sadly, more than half (55%) of adults ages 26 to 41 say they spend more time planning their vacations than their retirement, according to the 2022 survey from Empower Institute, “Empowering America’s Financial Journey.” And when someone does give some thought to their retirement, often they focus exclusively on the financial aspects. Spoiler Alert! There are various aspects of retirement that need to be explored before retirement, and often, the financial part is not at the top of that list. We have been conditioned to view retirement as a financial exercise. The physical, mental, and social aspects are largely ignored by “retirement experts.” Your blueprint should consider who you are as a person and how you want to live your life in what may be the most extended, single phase of your life. Do you have several leisure activities that you will carry into retirement? Or are there some you want to explore? A complete and robust “Retirement Mindset” will enable you to take advantage of the opportunity that you will have. Let’s look into several critical areas of your “Retirement Blueprint” that you will want to explore before you take the “leap.” If you would like to explore your current “Retirement Mindset" further, email mindset@yourhappyretirement.com, and we will send you a self-assessment to get you started on your retirement journey.

How will you stay mentally engaged? You know what you are retiring from, but what are you retiring to? You are not retiring from life. As such, your mental abilities and skills can make meaningful contributions in many areas. Will you give your time and talents to charitable endeavors? Will you work part-time? Start a consulting business or teach classes?
How will you approach healthy aging?
How will you spend your free time?
How will you maintain your social networks and relationships?
A definitive plan for physical and mental health will aid in longevity. Father Time is undefeated, but a strategy to maintain or even improve your health can lead to a more pleasurable retirement journey. And have you considered a plan for your family when you or your spouse or partner begin to have trouble with activities of daily living?
If your retirement strategy is to play pickleball or golf every day of the week, you may be disappointed with the journey. Non-stop leisure can transform itself into work and fundamentally change what these leisure activities are supposed to do for you. A “balanced” approach to leisure will help ensure these activities remain enjoyable and provide the deserved enjoyment factor.
Do you have a large circle of friends and family you can stay engaged with in retirement? If not, are there activities or interests you can pursue that would expand your social network? Our social connections are usually one of the most critical aspects of a successful retirement.

ARTICLE BY BETH GLENNON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARA MCCARTY
"My husband and I were watching a film at the Fly Fishing Film Tour about a fisherman that took the trip of a lifetime and returned to his son sitting on the couch watching TV. I remember thinking, “Where’s the film about him fishing with his son? Where’s the film that shows families you don’t have to travel around the world to have an adventure? That was the movie I wanted to see. Where are those stories?" said Sara McCarty, mom of three and founder of Run Wild My Child. CONTINUED >

“I created Run Wild My Child for busy moms who wanted to have outdoor adventures with their kids but didn’t know where to start.”
Run Wild My Child is an online resource to help busy parents spend more time outside adventuring together. It’s a website filled with endless activities for families, a podcast with inspiring interviews from parents prioritizing outdoor time, and an active online community that participates in challenges, events, and outdoor activities. Sara and her husband love exploring the world outside. "We fly fish, camp, canoe, hike, and travel. When we had kids, we just added them to our adventures," said Sara. "I quickly realized that I'm a better parent when I'm outside. I get to be a “yes” mom, instead of saying “stop that” all the time. And it was amazing to see how happy, independent and curious my kids were when we were outside." She's not the only parent who feels that way. After years of blogging about her home and family life, moms all over the country began to take an interest in Sara's outdoor activities, her gear and clothing recommendations, and her favorite tips for getting kids outside. "There was no entry-level website about how to get your kids outdoors, so I created Run Wild My Child for busy moms who wanted to have outdoor adventures with their kids but didn’t know where to start." Sara's website blew up. “I credit the growth mostly to good timing – as kids continue to spend more time on screens, parents are desperate for ways to get them to look up, go outside, and reconnect. We want to give our kids a childhood similar to the one we had, filled with simple thrills, independence, and lots of outdoor play.” "When I had my third child, I realized I couldn’t keep doing this alone," said Sara. Today, her team includes 30 writers and photographers (all moms) from Australia, Canada, Europe, and America. "This team is filled with moms with unique and diverse

voices and experiences, doing amazing things with their kids. And it’s our job to show our audience they can do cool things, too.” One of the coolest things that Sara's team created is a nationwide Treasure Hunt. "We created the Treasure Hunt as an event where we could physically see families enjoying the outdoors together," said Sara. "We filled beautiful wooden treasure boxes with gift cards from our favorite outdoor gear brands. We selected ten cities and hid one box in each city. On the morning of the Treasure Hunt, a clue was emailed to participants, and the hunt was on! Hundreds of families across the US gathered outside to hunt for treasure!” This year, the Treasure Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 22, in twenty cities nationwide. "In addition to hunting for the treasure box, we’ll have a list of eco-friendly activities to keep families outside longer in honor of Earth Day," said Sara. "Families can win prizes if they complete the activities on the list." Run Wild My Child also hosts online challenges throughout the year. "We have a sustainability challenge to inspire families to make eco-friendly changes in their lives, photography challenges to help moms improve their photography skills while the kids get outside, a camping challenge to help families that have never camped with kids before, and an Intentional Ten Challenge that encourages families to intentionally reconnect for 10 minutes daily for 10 days,” explained Sara. Don’t be afraid to combine outdoor time with technology. There are great apps that help identify plants, wildlife, bird songs, locate constellations in the night sky, and find hidden treasures (geocaching). For more information about Run Wild My Child and to register for the Treasure Hunt, visit: runwildmychild.com

Loves Loc al Katherine Hessel, the new Communications Manager for the City of Kirkwood, shares some of the local things she loves.
ARTICLE BY LUCY ROGERS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE CASSIMATIS
Meet Katherine Hessel, the new Communications Manager for the City of Kirkwood. She has been busy stepping into her new role, but not too busy to spend some time sharing a few of her favorite things with us. Katherine excludes so much love for this city. So, when it came time to select a venue for her wedding, The Kirkwood Performing Arts Center was a natural choice for Katherine's dreamy day. Exceptionally talented wedding specialists transformed the entire building from top to bottom. Inside the space was lovely, bright and beautiful and the outside was actually sparkling. Love took center stage at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center's very first wedding event. On a day like no other, in a venue like no other, Katherine shares her thoughts and her stunning pictures from her beautiful wedding day.
Favorite Sweet or Savory Treat:
I am usually a savory over sweets person. Chips are my weakness. Any kind, any time, any place. Cookies are my biggest sweets weakness, and I’ll always choose a savory breakfast over sweets.
Favorite Place You Have Traveled:
Africa! My husband and I went on a Safari for our honeymoon, which was absolutely amazing!
Favorite Thing You Are Listening To:
I listen to country music, podcasts, and audiobooks. I usually listen to true crime podcasts, but right now, I am listening to one called Dr. Dante, which is blowing my mind.

Favorite Book You’ve Read:
I tend to like crime mystery books, so I read a lot of James Patterson. I really enjoyed Verity by Colleen Hoover. Outside of the murder mystery category, I have recently read and liked, The Girl Who Wrote in Silk, Hidden Pictures, and The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell.
Favorite Childhood Memory:
I grew up in Kirkwood in a neighborhood full of kids. There were five of us girls, all the same age, on the streets, and we played all day! We would bounce from house to house playing outside and inside, and it was just perfect!
Favorite Thing About Being The Communications Manager for the City of Kirkwood:
I have so much pride in Kirkwood and genuinely love the city. It is an honor to be the one in charge of communicating all of the wonderful things about the city to the citizens and community at large.
Favorite Thing About Your Wedding:
I can’t just pick one thing. Everything about it was absolutely amazing! It was all more than I could have ever dreamed of! The Kirkwood Performing Arts Center was stunning. The flowers were perfect, the food was fantastic, and the band was amazing! The amount of love in the room was palpable. I also gained the sweetest little four-year-old stepson that day, which is probably my favorite thing about my wedding.

Easter Brunch Salad ARTICLE BY CHEF LYDIA GWIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GWIN’S TINY KITCHEN
This is a perfect Easter salad to complement your ham, deviled eggs, and scalloped potatoes with the embrace of spring flavors in a sweet, spicy, bright crunchy salad!
CA RROT BEET CITRUS SA LA D WITH HONEY SCA LLION DRESSING INGREDIENTS: DRESSING
• 3 medium scallions, roughly chopped (about 1/2 cup) • 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons mild honey • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest plus 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from 1 large lemon) • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper • pinch or two of crushed red pepper.
32
C ULIN A RY C CR R E AT ION S || FFOOD OOD ++ BE BEVE VERAGE RAGE
SALAD • 1 (5-ounce) container of baby arugula • 2 Tablespoon torn mint leaves • 2 medium carrots, peeled and shave into thin strips using a vegetable peeler (about 2 cups) • 2 small red beets, peeled, trimmed, and very thinly sliced (about 1 cup) • 4 medium radishes, trimmed and very thinly sliced (about 1 cup) • 2 medium Clementines, peeled and sliced crosswise into 1/8-inch-thick rounds • 1 cup chopped sugar snap peas • 1/3 cup roughly chopped unsalted almonds, toasted • Flaky sea salt, for garnish
DIRECTIONS: 01. Pulse scallions, oil, honey, mustard, lemon zest and juice, salt, and pepper in a food processor until dressing is creamy
and scallions are finely chopped, about 10 pulses, stopping to scrape down sides as needed. Transfer to a small bowl, and set aside. 02. Arrange arugula on a large, wide salad platter. Layer with carrot strips, beets, radishes, and Clementines. Scatter with almonds; drizzle with 1/3 cup dressing. Garnish with flaky sea salt. Serve salad alongside the remaining dressing. For more of my recipes, visit gwinstinykitchen.cooking Tips: To help with the earthy undertones beets have, sprinkle with salt, toss with honey, and a splash of lemon juice. Let sit for 10 minutes. This will lessen the earthy taste. Radishes can have a sharp spicy peppery taste. A pinch of salt ahead of time, just on the radishes will help to lessen the bite.
