"Home is the nicest world there is." - Laura Ingalls Wilder Where is home for you? The first time I walked into to Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, I called my husband and said, "I've found home." I didn't want to live in San Francisco, I just wanted to live among the chocolate. Honestly, home for me is wherever I am with my husband and my boys. They are my home. They are my world. The physical place and the emotional feeling of home is different for everyone. But one thing we all have in common is how proud we are to call our little corner of the world "home." LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

A tall oak tree stands at the corner of Geyer and Monroe. That tree, now part of the Kirkwood swimming pool, is the site of my family home that my grandfather had built. My father and I planted that tree. Growing up, that stretch of Monroe comprised a neighborhood of all Black families. Our block was home to more than a few people of distinction, notably a Buffalo soldier, a baseball Hall of Famer, and a decorated Tuskegee Airman. My parents were instrumental in creating a kind and caring place to live, not just for our family, but for our community. If you don't care about the people around you, home is just a place to put down your hat. That is a mantra I learned from my parents - and I try to continue to live by it every day. My parents were active in the Kirkwood community through the church and civic activities that advanced the Civil Rights movement. They believed interacting within the community was the most effective way to reduce prejudice. My father was a pastor at Olive Chapel A.M.E. Church and was a founding member of the Kirkwood Ministerial Alliance, an organization of white and Black ministers dedicated to strengthening racial relationships. He also understood that safe housing was crucial for Black families and worked as chairman of a non-profit foundation that built affordable housing throughout St. Louis. My siblings, Wilma, Larry, Natalie, Paul, Aaron, and I had no shortage of adventures with Kirkwood Park as our backyard. Together or with friends, we'd search the park for snakes and errant foul balls behind the baseball fields. Life in Kirkwood was much different for Black people in the 1950s. Many businesses were segregated, and

banks had covenants that restricted Black people from property ownership. My oldest sister attended Turner, a segregated elementary school located in Meacham Park. My mother would walk my sister to school, crossing two railroad tracks and two highways. By the time I entered elementary school in 1958, Pitman was desegregated. I walked to school with my sisters, and although our walk was short, it still required us to withstand verbal assaults from homeowners who did not want us walking on the sidewalks in front of their homes. My memories of Pitman are filled with thoughts of warm, caring, supportive, and protective teachers. Friendships were made and are still treasured today. It warms my heart to meet someone I went to school with at the grocery store and be transported back in time as we catch up. My family and I have benefited in untold ways from living in Kirkwood. My children have grown up in safe neighborhoods and schools. I have had the opportunity to build relationships with an expansive network of friends and family through serving the city and the Kirkwood School District. My brother Paul also created strong community connections through working with the city and civic organizations. My oldest sister has a park in Chicago named in her honor as recognition of her life’s work serving others in the community. Growing up in Kirkwood was idyllic but not without obstacles. I'm grateful for the many people who have helped me throughout my life. I feel a deep sense of connection to my family, friends, and parents, who have guided and instilled in me that caring for those in the community is simply the right thing to do.

"THEY ARE A BANK THAT IS INTEGRAL IN BRINGING SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS TOGETHER."

MORE THAN A TRAIN. AN ICON REIMAGINED. How tax credits turned a train station into a destination. Bob O’Loughlin had a vision for St. Louis’ Union Station. He was determined to transform the abandoned local landmark into a source of pride for the city. With the help of Enterprise, LHM was able to secure tax credits and funding to make his dream a reality. Now, the one time largest train station in the world has become a hotel, exhibit hall, meeting place and soon to be aquarium.

RESIDENT KIRKWOOD REALTOR, ANTIONE LAWRENCE AND HOMEOWNER NICOLE WONDERLIC WELCOME US INTO THEIR OPEN HOUSE “My favorite feature of the house has to be the kitchen. I love to cook, and it’s an open space where everyone can be together,” said Nicole Wonderlic. “I’m obsessed with it. The light that comes in, it’s so bright and welcoming.” As a stay-at-home mom with two active boys, Nicole noted how perfect this house is for an active family. “This

house has become designed for our boys. We have the front room turned into our playroom, and our basement has another playroom. The boys go crazy down there. The basement walks out to a large fenced-in backyard with a huge swing set and lots of room for the kids to run around.”

LOCAT ION. LOCAT ION. LOCAT ION. “I love where our home is located because we can walk to Kirkwood Park for the Greentree Festival, and we can walk to downtown,” said Nicole. “Our neighborhood doesn’t feel compact. It feels like you have room to breathe, but there is so much to do around here.” Nicole added, “And we have the best neighbors. My husband and I say that we will not find neighbors like this ever again. We are so lucky.” When it came time for the Wonderlics to transition from this house to their next home, Nicole knew exactly which realtor to choose. “Antione is on top of his game. He gives us great tips to get the house ready,” said Nicole. The Wonderlics chose Antione Lawrence, Kirkwood resident and real estate broker at Hybrid Real Estate, a locally owned, full-service boutique agency.

“We got the ball rolling early in the selling process,” noted Antione. “The process of selling your home isn’t for the faint of heart. A lot goes into selling a home that buyers and sellers may not realize. We provide suggestions for improvements to the property to make it suitable for the next buyer.” “And he also looks at the market and offers recommendations for the best time to list the house,” Nicole added. “It’s just been awesome to work with him.” “We work as a team with our clients. Knowing that our clients can trust us because we have the experience is key,” stated Antione. “As a realtor, my goal is, of course, to sell the house, but more importantly, make sure that our clients have a special experience.”

“As leaders in the green industry, we’ve always considered the outside space as a natural extension of the home.”

What's your favorite thing about being on vacation? Being outdoors, spending time with family or friends, going to a place to rest and relax? There is nothing better than the feeling of "getting away from it all." It turns out you don't have to travel any farther than your backyard to capture the essence of a wonderful vacation. "Over the past couple of years, families have realized that they can permanently vacation in their backyard," said Brian Pfotenhauer, owner of Timberline Landscapes in Webster Groves. Timberline has been creating backyard staycations since 2005. Brian leads a team of thirty people, including award-winning licensed landscape architect and Webster Groves resident Brad Furfaro. "It's good for your soul to be outside," noted Brad. He explained how fire features, waterscapes, beautifully designed greenspace, elevated steps, walls with seating, and ambient lighting contribute to a space that cultivates health and happiness. "Being in your backyard isn't just an extension of your home; it's an extension of your health. Outdoor spaces are an antidote for depression and anxiety," said Brad. "We've been able to help people live better, especially over the past two years as people spend more time at home." "As leaders in the green industry, we've always considered the outside space as a natural extension of the

home," stated Brian. "Renovating your outdoor space is the same as renovating a kitchen or bathroom or adding an addition to your home." As with any home renovation project, choosing the right team to work with is crucial. Landscape design is no different. "There is a lot of trust on my team," said Brian. "We have a core group of nine people who work behind the scenes to handle complex and highly creative projects expertly." Brian's wife, Katie, joined the team in 2018 as the Business Development and Marketing specialist. "The size of our team has doubled since 2018," stated Brian. He started Timberline with a small loan from his parents and a shovel. As an avid snow skier and natural-born entrepreneur, Brian aligns Timberline's top-of-the-mountain growth goals with his core values. "Our core values are Opportunity, Team success, What we do matters, and Fun." Katie stated, "We don't want all of our projects to look the same. We use high-quality products, in addition to our expert design and installation to ensure that each project adds value to both the individual home and to the surrounding community." As a proud Kirkwood resident, Brian broadly smiled as he said, "Our office is located in this community, we live in this community, and we want your outdoor project to last for years in this community."

CHARMING AND COLORFUL COTTAGE GARDENS Create a Stunning English-Style Cottage Garden in Your Own Yard. ARTICLE BY ABBY LAPIDES PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUGAR CREEK GARDENS

The English cottage garden brings a charming intimacy to the home. Many plants that thrive in the Kirkwood area offer the relaxed cheerfulness which evoke the colorful flare of the cottage garden. Use natural materials and curving edges to produce informal structural features. Wooden fencing, lattice, and arbors create backdrops and support for larger or vining plants. A climbing plant is practically a requirement for any cottage garden. ‘Major Wheeler’ Lonicera produces bright red tubes that attract hummingbirds. Many Missouri native plants are perfect for a cottage garden. Missouri Primrose’s large cheery yellow flowers bloom all summer. Plant these in front of scented blue mounds of Lavender to create an excellent color contrast. The stately Joe Pye Weed brings height to the garden and its airy purple flowers attract butterflies. Tall garden Phlox offer a long bloom of bright pink billowing blossoms. Make natural looking paths with stone or mulch, add groundcovers and small plants to soften the edges. Using sticks or natural stones as edging will define the garden without giving an overly formal appearance. Pinks, Bloody Cranesbill, and Candytuft are three great choices that will soften edges and add lots of flower power to the front of gardens. While traditional cottage gardens are planted in full sun, a shade cottage garden can easily be achieved with a few tweaks to the guidelines. Instead of extreme flower power look to add colorful foliage and interesting textures. Long bloomers like yellow Corydalis and Smooth Hydrangeas carry flowers all summer. The pinks, reds and purples from Astilbe, Bleeding Heart and Anemone add bold pops of color seasonally. There are plenty of shrubs that suit the cottage garden look and require little maintenance. Butterfly Bush bloom in vibrant colors all summer. With their showy flowers and

ease of care, Spirea make a top choice for any garden but can shine in the cottage garden. Shrub Roses freely flower for a long period of time. Plant a hedge for a traditional cottage garden aesthetic. Use any of the above-mentioned shrubs to create a colorful wall or plant Boxwoods for a clean evergreen look. Repeating colors and textures adds harmony and flow to the garden. Originally these gardens were meant to provide food and medicine to the home – adding edibles plants including vegetables, herbs and fruit trees will only enhance their beauty and functionality. Cottage gardens should be informal, welcoming and colorful - just like Kirkwood!

SHIFTING THE FOCUS IN THE HOME REMODELING INDUSTRY

ARTICLE BY CINDY ROESER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROESER HOME REMODELING

Although there are certain struggles in new home building and remodeling, there are tons of things to get excited about! With challenges, there are always opportunities, and we choose to focus on the changing emphasis on home life to make the most of the spaces where you live. Home offices are huge right now, and how lucky are we to have technology at our fingertips? Storage is the No. 1 concern for many homeowners, and going from a cabinet style in kitchens and built-ins to drawers has improved the convenience of getting to those items tucked in the back. Our focus is to do something pretty but also very functional to make it work for the way people live in their home. Opening spaces for an overall site line is still the No. 1 request, but with an added nook for some private time. Renovating or adding mud rooms and basements are also huge requests. Exterior spaces are growing in popularity with screened-in porches, four-season rooms, outdoor fireplaces, kitchens and entertaining spaces—especially fire pits and outdoor TVs and stereos. Design requests are clean lines, cool colors with wood touches to bring in the cozy. Anything goes, and the unexpected is a welcome surprise for those who want to stand out and follow the trends with a twist. Mixed colors and mixed metals are both fun ways to add interest to a room or space. Thinking toward the future is huge—technology upgrades from TVs and entertainment to toilets and bathtubs. Color trends are moving from the gray tones to browns—soft and subtle, comfy and warm, with a touch of class. Metals are mostly the many shades of gold, but the traditional chromes are still very popular and timeless. The current environment is promoting a lot of fun and exciting spaces. Taking a pause and changing the focus of our lives can be refreshing.
