Designing a home for someone who builds luxury for a living? That’s the kind of challenge we love. Huge thanks to Viktor Turchik and Remont Construction for the trust, the creative freedom, and the solid partnership. It’s always a pleasure to work with people who truly get great design — and know exactly how to make it real.
From our first meeting, AVI Design Studio showed a genuine commitment to understanding our needs and translating them into refined design solutions. The evolving project is a testament to their expertise and our shared vision.

Summer has always been synonymous with exploration—a season that invites us to step outside and try something new. In this special Explore Issue, we’re celebrating the spirit of adventure and discovery that summer brings.
Whether you're traveling across the state or simply stepping into your own backyard with a renewed sense of wonder, exploration takes many forms. It's in the hidden trails we hike, the books we finally have time to read, the summer flavors we taste, and the people we spend time with along the way. This issue is packed with inspiration to fuel your summer—from beautiful hiking destinations to local gems worth a visit.
This summer we also hope you give yourself time for some inner exploration— time for reflection, personal growth, and embracing change. As the pace of life shifts with longer days and warmer nights, there's space to slow down and reconnect with what truly matters.
Here’s to a summer full of exploration—of places, people, and possibilities!

Meet Mary—Pacific Northwest-based adventure photographer and the nature-loving force behind @hikingwithmary. What began as a personal outlet during a season of anxiety quickly became something more: a powerful reminder of nature’s ability to ground, heal, and inspire. After her first visit to Mount Rainier, she was all in—trading routine for ridgelines and choosing wonder over worry. Now, Mary shares her journeys to encourage others to lace up their boots and rediscover joy in the great outdoors. In this special Explore edition, she highlights four of her favorite Washington hikes—from a serene riverside trail to a bucket-list-worthy alpine loop—curated for families, thrill-seekers, and everyone in between.
FOUR UNFORGETTABLE HIKES FROM THE LENS OF A LOCAL OUTDOOR ADVENTURE AND TRAVEL INFLUENCER
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY MCCAUGHEY
Boulder River Wilderness, Washington
Distance & Elevation: 2.5 miles and 400ft elevation gain
Difficulty Level: Easy
A lush, forested hike perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape into nature. The trail follows alongside the crystal-blue Boulder River and is surrounded by towering evergreens, and vibrant green walls of ferns and undergrowth. Just about a mile in, you’ll reach a breathtaking 260-foot waterfall cascading into the river below. It’s a quiet trail with beautiful scenery from start to finish, making it a true hidden gem. The full trail is 8 miles and 1,380 ft elevation gain total, so you have the option to continue after the falls if you’re up for a longer hike!
Chinook Pass, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
Distance & Elevation: 3.5 miles and 656ft elevation gain
Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
A stunning trail that offers nonstop views of alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, and on a clear day, the majestic Mount Rainier. The loop is especially beautiful in late summer when the trail is filled with colorful blooms. Hiking clockwise gives you the best views of Mount Rainier as you circle the base of Naches Peak. With gentle elevation and well-maintained paths, it’s accessible for most hikers and packed with photo-worthy moments. This short but rewarding loop captures the magic of the Pacific Northwest in every step.
North Cascades, Washington
Distance & Elevation: 6.5 miles and 2,162ft elevation gain
Difficulty Level: Moderate
One of the most iconic hikes in Washington with dramatic mountain views and expansive ridgelines. The trail climbs through forest and wildflower-filled meadows before opening up to 360 degree views of jagged peaks and a couple of gorgeous alpine lakes below. I recommend hiking counterclockwise for the most scenic approach!
Mount Baker Wilderness, Washington
Distance & Elevation: 8.6 miles and 2,047ft elevation gain
Difficulty Level: Hard
A scenic alpine escape in the heart of the Mount Baker Wilderness. This trail winds through meadows and rocky slopes before descending to the shores of Lake Ann, nestled directly below the dramatic face of Mount Shuksan. Along the way, you’ll enjoy incredible views of both Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker. Lake Ann has a sandy shore just like the beach, making it a perfect spot to cool off in the summer!

Since its inception in 2015, the Kirkland Community Foundation (KCF) has been a beacon of local philanthropy, channeling the community’s generosity into impactful initiatives that enhance the quality of life in Kirkland. Originally established as the Kirkland Parks
youth programs to environmental initiatives. The 2025 cycle is scheduled to open in the fall, with more details to be announced in mid-summer.
KCF also manages Area of Impact Funds, allowing donors to contribute to specific causes such as Health & Housing,
“TOGETHER, WE’RE BUILDING A HEALTHY, VIBRANT, WELCOMING,
Foundation, KCF expanded its mission to address a broader spectrum of community needs, including housing, education, the arts, and more.
In September 2024, Carmin Dalziel stepped into the role of Executive Director at KCF, bringing with her a wealth of experience in nonprofit leadership and a deep passion for community engagement. Carmin’s approachable leadership style and commitment to inclusivity have fostered strong connections within the community. “I’ve been passionate about community building throughout my career, with experience spanning nonprofits, government, and faith-based organizations,” Carmin shares. “Joining KCF was a natural step, allowing me to channel my skills into fostering a more connected and resilient Kirkland.”
One of KCF’s flagship programs, Ignite Kirkland, exemplifies its commitment to empowering local nonprofits. In 2024, this community-led grant program supported 26 nonprofits with over $45,000, addressing diverse needs from
Art & Culture, Parks & Environment, Learning & Innovation, and Community Connection. This approach ensures that contributions align with donors’ passions while addressing the community’s most pressing needs.
Beyond grantmaking, KCF supports grassroots projects like the revitalization of Fisk Family Park and the installation of native plantings along the Cross Kirkland Corridor. These initiatives not only enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal but also foster a sense of community pride and ownership.
For those looking to make a lasting impact, KCF offers various giving options, including donor-advised funds and legacy giving opportunities. “We connect donors and businesses to the local causes they care about,” emphasizes Carmin.”Together, we’re building a healthy, vibrant, welcoming, and sustainable Kirkland.”

Kirkland based builder, RD Homes, shares their latest project.
The beauty of constructing homes is that with infill type development (developing in existing neighborhoods), every lot is presented with its own unique set of obstacles and characteristics. We enjoy the challenge of working with the architect to best utilize those difficulties to deliver a functional floor plan for the site. Furthermore, we ensure our homes stay relevant for many years to come, with the objective of developing living spaces that need very few modifications over the years.
Trust and communication are two fundamental aspects to evaluate. We suggest our clients write out exactly what constitutes a successful project? This may help guide you to the right builder and give you the key points to evaluate in the process. From our years of experience, consistent and effective communication is key; along with a clear vision of the end goal will help make your project a success!
This home is designed in a transitional style to harmonize with the landscape of the Kirkland Highlands neighborhood. This floorplan was crafted specifically for the lot and includes the garage on the main floor, 4 bedrooms plus a loft on the upper floor, guest suite/den on the main floor, and a full suite with rec area on the lower floor that daylights out to the backyard.
Ryan Deason,
Founder of RD Homes
“From our years of experience, consistent and effective communication is key; along with a clear vision of the end goal will help make your project a success!”
Ryan Deason has lived in Kirkland for the last ten years. Joining the home building industry in 2004, Deason “started at the bottom at a young age and worked my way up, learning about all aspects of building like carpentry, planning, and land purchasing. I knew I wanted to offer ‘the complete build’” he says, serving clients in each phase of their home building process.
One thing we were very intentional about in our design for this home was natural light. The design features large windows, multiple skylights, and expansive sliding doors that bathe the interior of the home in sunlight. This approach not only enhances living space but also helps to lower energy consumption.
With people spending an increasing amount of time at home, we embrace neutral color palettes that foster a sense of calm and warmth while incorporating natural materials. These soft hues complement the rich textures and patterns of hardwood floors, cabinetry, countertops, and tiles, resulting in a cohesive aesthetic that brings the beauty of the outdoors inside and creates a warm, welcoming environment.
The home showcases a floating staircase that acts as a focal architectural element, connecting the entry to both indoor and outdoor spaces. The overall openness of the staircase allows the natural light from the skylights above to drench the main area of the home with natural light.

Dr. Susan Kurian is passionate about helping her patients feel beautiful inside and out.
Susan Kurian, M.D. is a graduate of the American Academy of Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) fellowship program and is also board certified in head and neck surgery. She most recently worked with the facial plastic surgery division at Virginia Commonwealth University as well as at the Central Virginia Veterans Affairs Hospital, prior to moving to Seattle.
Dr. Kurian’s move to Seattle was inspired by the opportunity to work with the renowned Dr. Wayne Larrabee, who recently named her OR Director at the Larrabee Center for Plastic Surgery. Her practice is focused on rhinoplasty and face and neck lift surgery, but she says that the best rejuvenation comes from using the right combination of surgical and nonsurgical treatments. Dr. Kurian has been administering facial injectables for over 7 years, as well as Sculptra, which stimulates natural collagen production and skin elasticity. Dr. Kurian performs deep laser resurfacing, medical depth chemical peels, traumatic and acne scar treatments, ultrasound skin tightening, and radiofrequency microneedling. Her goal is always to help her patients look naturally refreshed and glowing with confidence.
Both surgeons also share an avid interest in global outreach; Dr. Kurian was involved in mission work in Matamoros, Mexico, for several years and has led surgeries on past Global Surgical Outreach trips with Dr. Larrabee. She will have upcoming trips with GSO for cleft rhinoplasty and facial reconstruction this winter. “Giving people their confidence back is why I do what I do.”
