LIFESTYLE LETTER
Kirkland, Happy New Year! The New Year always brings with it a fresh start, an opportunity to do better in the coming months than this time last year. Let me be the first to encourage you as you launch into the new year with new goals and ideally, a fresh perspective for what is possible, but let me also encourage you to encourage someone close to you who is also starting on a new resolution. Take a moment to learn about what they hope for and, more importantly, why they are taking the risk in the first place, knowing that within 3-5 weeks, most “resolutions” have already been abandoned and replaced by old habits. You can do what you decide to do, and so can they. It is often said that “it is in the deciding that we determine our future, and most people simply won’t continue to decide to do it, day after day, until it is done.” In the pages that follow, you’ll find stories aimed at helping you start the new year off strong, energized, and ready to reach the goals you’ve set. The feeling you have when you make the initial decision will undoubtedly be challenged when you face adversity or wake up sore from your first workout, but go ahead and give it another day, keeping in mind the result you are looking for. Look further into these pages, and you’ll see we have some very talented writers who are excited to bring you stories about the people in our community who make it a great place to live, work, and raise a family. You can expect to see us write about the dynamic and vibrant community of non-profit organizations that call Kirkland home, as well as incredibly talented and creative people who somehow can take a few ingredients in the kitchen and make “delicious” happen. Finally, we want to encourage you to continue to share with us those people you know who are special because of the generous way they go about their life, always thinking of and finding a way to serve others. We would love to meet them, learn their story, and maybe share it within these pages for everyone to be inspired. Happy New Year!

HOW ALICIA ERICKSON IS REDEFINING STRENGTH, CONFIDENCE, AND WELL-BEING FOR WOMEN 40 PLUS
ARTICLE BY TAYLOR ROBINSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIFE N LIGHT
THE MIDLIFE
MAVEN For many women, midlife arrives with a subtle but persistent question: What now? Children are growing up and moving out, careers are evolving, priorities are shifting, and long ignored personal needs begin rising to the surface. It is a season marked by transition, reflection, and, if you ask Alicia Erickson, founder of The Midlife Maven, remarkable opportunity. CONTINUED >

Alicia did not set out to create a movement. But when she hit 50 and experienced a personal transformation that reshaped her entire outlook on strength and aging, she knew she could not keep it to herself. “When I experienced my own transformation as I turned 50, I wanted to share it with every woman and empower them to believe it’s possible to make major changes in midlife. I wanted to show them that this is just the beginning for us.” What began as her own awakening has evolved into a mission to help women in their 40s and 50s feel strong, capable, and deeply connected to themselves again. Through her work, Alicia meets women who are often navigating profound shifts. Kids are leaving the house, career paths are changing, and daily life may feel unfamiliar. Many realize they have spent years putting everyone else first and find themselves wondering when they stopped prioritizing their own well-being. As she explains, “We are coming to a point in life where the kids are leaving, career paths might be changing, life is looking different. It is a moment of discovering ourselves all over again. Often times this comes after putting everyone else first and putting ourselves last. Our bad habits catch up with us and we wonder who we even are anymore?” In Alicia’s view, this moment is not a crisis but an invitation to rebuild.

“BELIEVE THAT THE FIRST HALF WAS JUST T H E W A R M U P. T H E BE S T I S COMING.”
A cornerstone of her approach is strength training, something she believes most women have been misled about for decades. “We have been told our entire lives to do more cardio and eat less. This DOES NOT and WILL NOT work,” she says. “Adding muscle to your body especially in midlife is the fountain of youth. You will not only feel amazing and age powerfully with independence, you will have the beautiful sculpted figure you have always chased after. This does not come from yoga and bird food. This comes from fueling yourself properly and lifting heavy weights.” For Alicia, building muscle is not just about aesthetics. It is a pathway to independence, vitality, and resilience, helping women feel grounded and powerful in their own bodies again. Just as important is the mental shift that must accompany the physical one. “Mindset is THE most important factor because when you believe it’s possible you open up your entire world to possibility. You need to build a vision for the woman you want to become and chase after her consistently with your daily habits.” Alicia encourages women to redefine what is possible by picturing their strongest future selves and then aligning their daily habits with that vision. Consistency, she believes, grows from clarity. When asked what small step a woman can take today to start feeling stronger and more balanced in the year ahead, her answer is simple and direct. “Believe that the first half was just the warm up. The best is coming. Start lifting weights following a lifting program. She will feel incredibly empowered as she gets stronger. Fuel herself properly with nutritious food. Cut the alcohol and processed crud. Eat like you love yourself.” Women who want to learn more can connect with Alicia’s vibrant and growing community. She shares inspiration and insights on Instagram @aliciae, TikTok @aliciae6, her blog at themid life-maven.com, and through her app at aliciaericksonapp.com, which offers lifting programs and group coaching. For Alicia, midlife is not something to fear. It is a powerful new beginning. “This is just the beginning for us.” Glam by Alexis Michael HMUA, alexismichaelhmua.com JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / KI R KL A N D

UNLOCKING THE POWER WITHIN YOU ARTICLE BY HANNAH PETERSON - CO-OWNER BARRE3 PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANINE SOLTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY
MINDFUL
MOVEMENT In today’s fast-paced fitness culture, it’s easy to view workouts as a checklist item—something to power through, track, and finish as quickly as possible. Rather than approaching your fitness goals this year with the same old approach, take a moment to consider a full-body workout method that blends strength conditioning, cardio, and mindfulness to create balance not just in the body, but in the mind as well.
24
M UST SE E | FI TNES S
WHY MINDFULNESS MATTERS IN MOVEMENT
Mindfulness—the practice of paying attention on purpose—has been shown to reduce stress, improve focus, and support emotional well-being. When applied to physical fitness, it deepens the connection between body and mind, helping people move more effectively and sustainably. Instead of pushing through discomfort or comparing yourself to the person next to you, mindfulness invites curiosity and compassion. It’s about noticing the sensations in your muscles, your breath, and your posture while adjusting as needed. That might mean taking a smaller range of motion one day or finding stillness in a posture to reconnect with your breath. This self-awareness not only prevents injury but also cultivates confidence and selftrust—qualities that extend far beyond the gym or studio walls.
BUILDING STRENGTH FROM THE INSIDE OUT
An approach to strength is deeply rooted in mindful alignment. Each movement, whether it’s a pulse at the barre or a deep squat flow, is intentionally designed to activate stabilizing muscles and support long-term joint health. The inclusion of breath work is another essential piece. Breath acts as both an anchor and a source of energy, helping you stay present while supporting endurance and recovery. By linking breath to movement, one learns to listen to their bodies’ cues and work with them, not against them.
A WORKOUT THAT TRANSLATES INTO DAILY LIFE
What makes a workout like this unique is that the mindfulness cultivated between body and spirit doesn’t stop at the end of your workout. The principles of awareness, balance, and presence naturally begin to shape the way people approach their everyday lives—how they sit at a desk, manage stress, or engage in relationships. Movement becomes a form of self-care rather than self-discipline. In a world that often celebrates hustle and intensity, your fitness routine can cultivate a different kind of strength—one built on compassion, awareness, and balance. It reminds us that fitness isn’t just about sculpting muscles or burning calories; it’s about coming home to your body, one mindful movement at a time.

DRY RUB CHICKEN WINGS
THE PERFECT HEARTY NIBBLE FOR GAME DAY ARTICLE BY AMBER DAWN SCHULTHEIS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAWNING MEMORIES
28
C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE
These crowd-pleasing, perfectly seasoned wings are perfect for game day. They are intentionally unsauced, meant to be served with your favorites alongside - a little something for everyone. Let’s make them!
DRY RUB CHICKEN WINGS SERVES 8–10 people
Ingredients:
• 4 pounds chicken wings, thawed • 11/2 Tablespoons olive oil • 2 Tablespoons 21 Seasoning Salute (Trader Joes), or Back of the Yards Seasoning (Spice House), or your favorite poultry seasoning • 1 Tablespoon paprika (optional) • 11/5 teaspoons Kosher salt (reduce if your poultry seasoning includes salt) • 1/2 teaspoon Black pepper Freshly cracked • 1/4 cup Italian flat leaf parsley Fresh, chopped
Instructions:
1. Pre-heat the oven to 375°F. Line your baking sheets with parchment. 2. Add your thawed chicken wings to a large mixing bowl. Add olive oil, salt, pepper, and 21 Seasoning Salute (or your favorite poultry seasoning blend). 3. Mix together (hands are your best tool here, tongs will work as well) and make sure all the wings are coated in oil and spices. 4. Cover with a lid or plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes, or in the fridge overnight if preparing ahead to allow the spices to absorb into the wings. 5. Place the chicken wings on the lined baking sheets and spread out evenly, giving a bit of space between them to allow them to really cook and brown. If they are too crowded, they will steam and it will be tough to get them to crisp up. 6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, then remove from the oven to turn each wing for even browning. 7. Return to the oven for an additional 20 minutes or until golden brown. 8. For a crispier skin, finish with a ~2 minute broil on high. Watch carefully so as not to burn them. 9. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Finish with chopped herbs, such as Italian flat leaf parsley for some color if you like and your favorite dipping sauces. If you love this recipe, find more seasonal and hospitality-focused recipes at thehostnotes.com and follow along @thehostnotes on social channels.

SKINCARE BEYOND
the Surface
The path to healthy skin isn’t just about appearance—it’s about confidence, wellbeing, and trusted science behind the products we use. Few brands understand this as deeply as HydroPeptide. As a woman-led luxury therapeutic skincare brand, it has built its reputation on clinical precision, cutting-edge peptide technology, and results that are both visible and transformative. A global pioneer in peptide research, HydroPeptide partners with leading experts around the world to create breakthrough formulas that set new standards in skin health. Over the past 20 years, the brand has evolved from its roots in Issaquah to a global presence headquartered in Bellevue, with products shipping from its Auburn facility to more than 40 countries across Europe, Australia, and Canada. HydroPeptide prioritizes sustainability and clean science in every formula, using fully recyclable packaging made from FSCcertified, recyclable, or post-consumer recycled materials. All products meet the brand’s strict Clinically Clean standards — free of genotoxins, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and harmful fragrance, and are compliant with EU banned-ingredient regulations. The line is 100% cruelty-free and RIPT allergy tested, with about 90% of products gluten-free and 80% vegan. Developed by
an in-house chemist, every formula is results-driven, leveraging advanced peptide technology while maintaining strict safety and sustainability standards. Most recently, HydroPeptide unveiled its cutting-edge medical line: the ReActivate Rx Serum and the ReActivate Rx Moisturizer Pro-Collagen Night Complex. “ReActivate Rx represents the culmination of over two decades of peptide innovation and clinical research,” says Annette Rubin, CEO of HydroPeptide. “Regenerative aesthetics has never been more in demand, as consumers shift from chasing quick fixes to proactively strengthening their skin’s foundation. We worked alongside leading scientists to understand not just how to stimulate collagen, but how to sustain and protect it at the cellular level—because that’s where skin health and longevity truly begin.” HydroPeptide’s products are available in resort, day, and medical spas, as well as online at HydroPeptide.com. A collaboration with Columbia Hospitality brings the brand to premier hotel spas across the Pacific Northwest, further highlighting its commitment to professional-grade skincare and elevated spa experiences both globally and close to home. Its newly released medical line is offered exclusively through medical spas and clinical practices.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”
Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.
6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”
Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.
7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”
Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
