We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into that trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty. But the truth is - that is a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. I'll never forget wandering Europe with a friend from college, the summer before I started graduate school. We met some fascinating people, perused incredible museums and castles, and ate our body weight in gelato. We came back different people than we'd been when we embarked on our trip. In the last few months I've really been analyzing my relationship with my kids, how our family operates as a unit and what we love spending our time doing. I clarified this by identifying the things that I don't love spending time on. For our family - it’s screens. For yours, it may be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough dinners around the table together. But I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail or going out to find a fun cookie place we've never been to before in a different part of town. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to get lost! Happy April!

An interview with Andrew Hughes in advance of his North Pole expedition

You’ve probably known people who challenge themselves with marathons, sales goals at work, or learning a new language. 41-yearold Andrew Hughes set a goal of climbing the Seven Summits - the highest mountains on each of the seven continents - within five years, and achieved that in May of 2021. Previously, Hughes became the first American man and third person ever to complete the Antarctica Trifecta with his climbing partner Roxanne Vogel,

by consecutively Skiing the Last Degree to the South Pole and reaching the summits of Mount Vinson (the highest mountain) and Mount Sidley (the highest volcano and one of the most remote peaks on Earth) in Antarctica during the 2019-20 season. This April, Hughes has set his sights on reaching the North Pole on skis and completing the “Explorer’s Grand Slam” - an adventurers’ challenge to reach the North Pole, the South Pole and all

of the Seven Summits. Just over 70 people have ever completed it, and by reaching the North Pole in April 2023, Hughes will join this elite group. A dual citizen, he will become only the 19th American and 13th British/UK citizen to ever achieve this. Originally from Poulsbo, Hughes has gone to law school and run for Congress along his path to becoming an adventurer extraordinaire. nearly ten years ago and after a stormy and challenging, but successful, summit my life was set in a new direction.” He’s motivated by the promise of a meaningful impact in the world, committed to the principles of sustainability, conservation, and combating climate change. Hughes uses his expeditions to raise awareness and funds for Human Rights Watch’s work on the Environment and Human Rights. To reach the North Pole, Hughes and his team will come up through Svalbard, Norway, the northernmost inhabited place on Earth. Each season, Barneo Ice Camp is set up on the Arctic sea ice for as long as it remains stable. Tractors are air-dropped in to build a runway so small planes can access the camp, then it’s taken down weeks later and supplies hauled away by boat when the ice becomes too dangerous to traverse. There hasn’t been an Arctic expedition season for four years due to COVID and geopolitical issues, but everything seems on track for 2023. The North Pole trip will take 9-14 days and Hughes mentions that when you’re in the Arctic, “You’re on ice the whole time, which moves and floats throughout the trip.” Hughes says “You’re at the mercy of geopolitical events and weather in these expeditions, so I focus on what I can control: Training.” Which for this trek entails a focus on muscular endurance, meaning heavy pack work on inclines, as well as mobility training to maintain peak muscle and joint function. Using heavy sled poles in cross-country skiing helps him prepare for this extreme challenge. He and his team will take the “Nordic approach,” pulling gear on sleds while they ski. Sub-freezing temperatures (-20 to -30F), the weight of gear, and ensuring that no one and no materials get wet are important considerations. Gear is so critical to what Hughes does in these expeditions that he is planning to launch a cold-weather adventuring gear company Another goal of Hughes’s is to help break down the socio-economic barriers that may prevent people from enjoying outdoor adventuring. “Creating paths for expanding the community and making it more inclusive” is a priority, providing greater access to our natural spaces is part of his “perpetual purpose beyond the peaks.” Follow Andrew’s journey on Instagram @andrew_i_hughes

PAWCHITECTURE Last year I walked into a beautifully designed home in Woodinville where the storage area beneath the stairs had been transformed into a deluxe doggy suite. As a devoted dog mama to my sweet Golden, Bailey, I couldn’t help but fall in love. This is just one in a series of pet-focused design trends that I’m seeing integrated into more and more homes. Whether it be a custom glass doggy entrance built within black framed modern farmhouse patio doors, or a marble tiled dog feeding station neatly tucked at the base of a kitchen cabinet, the inspired design options available when ideating a pet-friendly home are endless.

Some of my favorite animal-centered must haves are pictured here. Integrated comfy crated areas for dogs ensconced within built-ins or seamlessly architected beneath a laundry room countertop, make for an aesthetically pleasing look, while never compromising on our furry friends’ comfort and safety. The beauty of all of this design, is that it also helps save floor space so it gets a ten out of ten for practicality, too. Meanwhile a dedicated wash spot for your canine is, well, essential. Not only are these ridiculously practical (and will save you grooming dollars in the long run), but you can turn them into exquisitely designed spaces too. A good friend of mine has her dog bed areas nestled beneath a seating bench in her mud room - genius.

KIRKLANDERS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE SIGHT OF SEAPLANES AROUND CARILLON POINT. WE WANTED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT WHO PILOTS THEM. James Young of Seaplane Scenics is a busy man. On the day Kirkland Lifestyle connected with him by phone, he explained that in addition to the roles of owner and chief pilot of the company, he also served as mechanic, was in the process of building a house, and was leaving for vacation the next day. Young aspired to flying from an early age. Born in West Virginia, he was “living out in the bush” as a child when he would see airplanes flying low down the valley where his family’s farm was located, and he was inspired to become a pilot. Young learned to f ly at King County Boeing Field, acquiring his pilot’s license 38 years ago. Since then he’s f lown many interesting personalities from Stephen Hawking to Anthony Bourdain, and once had an enjoyable conversation with George Clooney over coffee at an airport.

With Seaplane Scenics he flies many visitors from the Woodmark Hotel in Carillon Point. Twenty minute city tours are the most popular. He notes that people have a hard time visualizing Seattle when they’re just spending time in individual neighborhoods, so a flying tour helps them grasp how large the lake is and how the city is laid out. Since 2017 the Life N Light team have been the lead photographers for Bellevue Lifestyle Magazine, and now also Kirkland Lifestyle Magazine. They were founded In 2016, when Jaylen Hendrickson and Easton Lemos set out to capture life through their camera lenses. Today, Life N Light is a fast growing photography collective that provides a wide range of photography services. The name “Life N Light” was derived from the simplicity of what they love doing — capturing life in perfect light.

Their style was developed from the collaboration between a technical landscape photographer and a well versed portrait photographer. When you combine the technical aspects of photography with effortless creative direction you get a style that captures the beauty and true essence of someone. “Our passion is people. Whether it’s with our clients or our team, relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We’re driven by a desire to connect, inspire, and empower people and brands through visual media,” says founder Easton Lemos. Life N Light has a large studio in Everett where they perform editorial shoots, headshots, family portraits and more. They are also known for capturing clients in the outdoors with gorgeous Pacific Northwest views as a backdrop. Kirkland Lifestyle asked Life N Light to share some of their favorite outdoor photography tips:

TIP #1: EXPLORE DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW Sometimes it takes some experimenting to find the best perspective. Look for different vantage points (high, low, side to side) as the elements in the foreground could change to look more interesting.

TIP #2: SHOOT DURING SUNRISE OR SUNSET Shooting during sunrise or sunset when the light is soft and the sun is low on the horizon can bring vivid colors and dramatic shadows to the landscape.

TIP #3: USE A SUBJECT If you are exploring with someone, placing a subject in the frame can change the viewer’s perspective of the landscape’s size and scale. It can also give context to the image to create a story.
