In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the good fortune in our lives. Thanksgiving, in the true sense of the word, encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and accomplishing goals can be healthy, forgetting the importance of being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. I have so many things to be grateful for; health, friends and family, professional fulfillment, and the gift of living in this beautiful part of the Pacific Northwest. Mayor Penny Sweet knows that she has a lot to be thankful for. “I was blessed 39 years ago by the Grape Choice wine store, which we bought when it was a year old,” she tells me. Sweet’s husband Larry Springer (former mayor of Kirkland and current member of the State House of Representatives) worked six days a week at the store for a couple years, Sweet was a healthcare administrator - a job she held for 31 years. “In order for us to be successful, the city has to be successful, so we got involved,” says Sweet. The year that Sweet and Springer took over Grape Choice, the city started a Business Improvement District. It was not a huge success and was disbanded after a year. Sometime after the BID’s demise, business leaders established the Kirkland Downtown Association. Later, Larry ran for and served on the city council for nine years (four as mayor). When he left Kirkland to run for legislature, Penny ran for mayor again and won (after a previous defeat). Of her leadership role, “It’s the greatest job in the world, it really is,” she says.

The couple has since sold the wine shop, but Sweet is ever grateful for great employees over the years who have become like family. When it came time to move Grape Choice from its former location where the Heathman Hotel is now, to its current place in Marina Park, a parade of customers moved the inventory through downtown Kirkland - a testament to the relationships built at the shop. Over the years Springer and Sweet hosted political functions and charity fundraisers at Grape Choice, adding to the memories made there.

Sweet loves that “Kirkland is made up of people who care, our community takes care of one another.” She’s grateful for Washington state as a climate refuge, and she has longstanding passions for environmental issues like solid waste and water quality. She’s grateful to work for a city council that understands that a lot of hard work and listening will be required to move ahead with a successful growth plan. The City of Kirkland 2044 Comprehensive Plan update process is underway and will help guide Kirkland’s growth over the next two decades. CONTINUED >

“Our land prices are out of this world, that is a significant challenge and there are no easy answers,” Sweet says. “Kirkland has more influence in Olympia than just about anyone, we meet with representatives there 2-3 times per year,” she continues. “We are considered to be a leader, particularly in the area of housing.” The city is a leader in other ways as well. Kirkland, Kenmore, Bothell, Lake Forest Park, and Shoreline have formed a new Regional Crisis Response (RCR) Agency. The agency is a separate legal entity governed by an Executive Board comprised of City Managers or Administrators from

each member city. The agency provides mobile crisis response services to better serve community members in the five-city region who experience behavioral health crises. The RCR Rapid Response team has 13 behavioral health specialists, and a 24-hour mental health crisis center in Kirkland that can help any person in crisis. The model has been used in Arizona for some time and Penny is proud of launching this resource in our area with the leadership of the council. “When you’re on the city council, you have the opportunity to learn and grow in so many ways,” she says.

She and Springer are in their late 70’s healthy, with healthy families for which they’re grateful. They have two golden retrievers as loyal companions. “When I come home at midnight after a city council meeting, they’re waiting for me,” she says fondly. At whatever point her time as mayor is over, Sweet is looking forward to fewer meetings, though she’ll keep being involved. “It all comes down to water and garbage for me.”

The impetus for your party sets the tone for EVERYTHING from there. Many caterers welcome a client that wants to serve an old family recipe or recreate a special dinner (anniversary, engagement, cultural holiday, etc.) to add a memorable touch that says, “This is us!” • Do NOT forget your guests’ food restrictions! Food allergies and dietary lifestyles are very important to everyone, so don’t just add broccoli to the menu to satisfy any vegetarians that might be there. We engineer our menus to cater to the most extreme dietary restriction first, and then we add items that will satisfy everyone. This way, that vegetarian has multiple options, and everyone else gets that same experience of outstanding food.

1 loaf brioche 20 oz fresh goat cheese 1 lb smoked salmon -- hot smoked and flaked 2 Granny Smith apples -- sliced thin 1 Tablespoon olive oil -- for sautéing 1 Tablespoon butter -- for sautéing

D i re ct i on s: 1. Thinly slice the brioche. Lay out the slices of bread so that there are matching tops and bottoms. 2. On one slice of bread, spread the goat cheese, salmon, and sliced apple. Then add the remaining cheese slice. 3. Heat an 8-10” skillet over medium-high heat until hot enough to evaporate a drop of water upon contact. Add the olive oil and butter. Add the sandwich and cook, covered, over medium-low heat, turning once, until browned on both sides, about 10 minutes. 4. Cut into desired triangles, squares, or rectangles and serve warm. Apple butter or jam works well as a topping.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR MILITARY BACKGROUND. I grew up in Carnation Washington, and have spent nearly my whole life in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. After a chance meeting with a recruiter, I signed up for the Marine Corps at 17, with zero clue what I’d be getting myself into. The July after graduation, I was shipped down to San Diego to start my training. After San Diego I moved to Ft. Leonard Woods in Missouri where I trained as an engineer’s assistant, which involved surveying and road design in support of heavy equipment operators. Then I returned home to Seattle where I met my wife, Sandi. Fast forward 23 years, and we have three amazing children, Isla (10), Noelle (6), and Eli (5). We love to be outdoors at the beach or pool, at our cabin in Packwood skiing, and hiking the trails of Mount Rainier. In addition, I coach soccer (now THAT is a hard job), and serve on the school board.

We founded Audian in 2013 in Kirkland and our headquarters have always been in Totem Lake. We started out focused on telecommunications locally, as we loved the idea of taking what most people consider a painful and frustrating process and making it easy. Our goal was to simplify complexities, provide amazing customer service, and help our clients leverage technology to enhance their businesses. Kirkland has always been a wonderful community and we’ve spent countless hours volunteering where we can. We’ve since branched out and now have divisions focused on: IT Support for small, medium and large businesses; Networking as a Service; Security; Cameras; and more. Now we focus on everything cloud related, and are passionate about helping businesses advance themselves. Technology is second nature to us, but many businesses don’t know who to turn to with questions on upgrades, migrations, security concerns or telecommunications. During the pandemic, demand increased significantly as technology changed, and we now support clients from Bellingham to Dallas and have employees in six states.

HOW DID YOUR MILITARY EXPERIENCE INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU DO THINGS AT AUDIAN? Reflecting back, one of the greatest lessons of being a Marine is the confidence gained in just “getting things done.” That permeates our company culture, and has resulted in Audian being able to execute on projects that seem incredibly daunting. Putting one foot in front of the other, and pushing on to the next step - even though we can be accused of being stubborn - has been a key part of our success. “Staying in solution” is another maxim we preach, and try to instill in our employees, and this also comes from the military. As a Marine, you never know where you are going to end up, or what situation you may be in. Focusing on staying in solution means not getting distracted by the problem at hand or getting overwhelmed, but focusing on the mission and putting your effort into solving problems as they come. Lastly, we were taught to never ask our team to do something that we wouldn’t do, and I’ve always believed that this is a huge difference between a leader and a “boss” or “owner”. A leader engages those around them to come together and accomplish a mission, where a boss or owner simply dictates what should be done “because I’m the boss.” I’m proud to say that we haven’t had an employee resign since 2015, and I attribute much of that to our culture of leading from the front, focusing on solutions, and supporting our employees. WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR? I am most thankful for my health and family. There are many things going on around the world and they’re just a reminder that if you have your health, a roof over your head, and people that love you, you have it pretty good.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE PART OF THIS COMMUNITY, AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT? Kirkland is such an amazing community to be a part of. We love seeing familiar faces when we are out. There’s always someone you run into at PCC or Met Market, or while shopping at the Wednesday market. The Grape Choice and Bibi are great places to mingle with friends and family while enjoying the sunset on

the lake. The yearly events that the city hosts are very special for the kids and adults too. Kirkland isn’t as big as neighboring cities, I think it will always have that small town feel and will always be a close-knit community. It’s truly a special place to call home.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2024? I would love to get more involved in the community and to be in touch with friends and family on a consistent basis. The Festival of Lights

For those who are unfamiliar, Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a significant event in the religious traditions of Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism. It is a celebration of multiple historic events and deities, and there are many different ways that people celebrate across India and throughout the world, but the overarching theme is the triumphing of good over evil and light over darkness. It’s celebrated over five days with special meaning attributed to each day. Commonalities in celebrations are around enjoying sweets and delicious foods; and illuminating homes, workplaces, and temples with a variety of lights, candles and diyas (clay lamps filled with oil), even setting off fireworks. Because the timing of the festival is based on the lunar calendar, it falls between October and November. Local resident Nikita Bijlani explains that Diwali commemorates Lord Ram rescuing his wife Sita (an

incarnation of the Goddess Lakshmi) who had been kidnapped by evil king Ravana. The return of Ram and Sita was heralded by every household all over the kingdom lighting lamps, giving it the appearance of a row of lights. Diwali is celebrated after 21 days of Dussehra to represent the 21 day journey of Ram and Sita back home. Bijlani says one tradition is to leave doors open and pray to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good luck. Another tradition is the display of rangoli, elaborate designs made of colored sand at home entrances. Bijlani says, “The rangoli represents the happiness, positivity, and liveliness of a household. It’s intended to welcome Lakshmi, who is believed to visit each household on Diwali day to bless her worshipers with tremendous wealth and prosperity. It is believed that a Hindu household without a clean entrance and rangoli is an abode of bad luck.”
