I hesitate to quote Will Smith after this year’s Oscars, but hard not to when he does have one of the best summer songs (does that age me?). Interior Designer and Realtor Duo Turn their Vacation Home Dream Into Reality

Kirkland residents, Brian and Nicole Hopper, started visiting Lake Chelan in 1999, the year they met. Year after year they would camp and boat at the state park, eventually bringing along their two children, Trustin and Claira. “With kids in the mix, we wanted to figure out a way to make traveling to our favorite place easier rather than just camping. When The Lookout at Lake Chelan was first being built, we would drive through it just dreaming of owning there one day; looking at the pool and all the kids playing,” says Nicole. About 10 years later, what was only once a dream became a reality for the Hopper’s. During the early part of the Pandemic, Brian, who is a luxury realtor, had the biggest deal of his career close while they were renting at The Lookout. They decided that day to buy a lot, and just in time because one week later the lots were sold out. For those that don’t know, The Lookout at Lake Chelan is a thoughtfully designed neighborhood, complete with shared spaces, walkability, and resort-like amenities. The community prides itself with providing a simplified building process that includes timeless design, smart floor plans and expert construction. With the charming architecture and

landscaping, along with 700 feet of private waterfront and a sandy beach cove, it’s easy to understand why the Hopper’s were excited. And thanks to Nicole’s expertise as an interior designer, they were able to build a home start to finish exactly to their liking within 12 months. Nicole’s interior design experience began with partnering with Brian on his listings for over 14 years. She’d update countertops, lighting, carpet, etc, and work with a stager to style. Eventually, the home buyers began hiring Nicole to decorate their house. In 2019 she got so busy that she was able to build her own business separate from Brian, taking on bigger jobs and even hiring an assistant. “I love all design styles, and get a lot of my inspiration from designers like Kelly Wearstler, Burkhart Interiors, Lazaro Rosa-VIolan, and Tanya Krpan ,” says Nicole. They named their vacation home “The Palm Club” after a trip to the Parker Palm Springs. “The Parker transported me back in time. The vibrant and retro mid-century modern design was magic. It all came down to a feeling and I loved that I was able to design our home with that inspiration in mind,” says Nicole.

The charming waterfront city of Kirkland began welcoming back visitors in spring 2022 with an innovative new community currency program called Kirkland Ca$h, an incentive for visitors to shop locally while staying in town which is a win-win-win for tourists, local hotels and business owners. It is a dollar-for-dollar certificate program aimed at promoting tourism and supporting the local economy, particularly small business owners and the hospitality industry, sectors hit hard during the pandemic.

Kirkland Ca$h launched on April 1, and the first portion of the initiative wrapped up on June 30. There are plans to renew the program in the fall, to continue to support businesses and tourism after what promises to be a busy summer season. “Our small businesses struggled so much during the pandemic,” said Martha Chaudhry, from the Economic Development Department of the City of Kirkland. “Kirkland Ca$h was created to help local hotels and shops recover by shining a spotlight on our incredible community and incentivizing both staying and spending locally. It offers a tool that can support our small business economy over time, during the pandemic recovery and beyond.” In this first phase, local hotel properties, such as The Heathman Hotel, The Woodmark Hotel, Courtyard by Marriott Seattle-Kirkland, and Motel 6, offered a per night promotion when booked directly through the link on the Kirkland Ca$h website. Guests then received $50 in Kirkland Ca$h upon check-in for each night’s stay, at no additional cost, to spend at more than a hundred participating businesses. The certificates are redeemable through August 30 at any participating business. To get the new program underway, the municipal government reached out to the city’s merchants, restaurant owners, and hoteliers. More than a hundred businesses signed up to participate, including restaurants, shops, boutiques, salons, and those providing services or recreational activities, among others. Powerful is the fact that many of these businesses struggled during the pandemic, and some received grants from city, state and federal sources to stay afloat. The Kirkland Ca$h program provides continued support by bringing new customers and dollars through the front door, moving from relief support to a lasting recovery strategy that builds local enterprises and strengthens Kirkland’s small business ecosystem. The list of participating businesses is ever-growing and can be found on the Kirkland Ca$h website. A second phase is expected to launch in the fall shoulder season of 2022. Considered one of the most scenic concert locations in the world, the Gorge sits near the Columbia River and offers sweeping views of the river and the Columbia Gorge canyon to concert-goers. The Gorge also offers a campground that is a wildly popular option for festival-attendees. If camping isn’t your thing, consider staying in Sunland Estates or Cave B Estate Winery. There is reserved seating near the front of the stage; however, most of the 27,500 seats are located in the sprawling lawns at the Gorge.

Washington state’s oldest winery, Chateau Ste. Michelle, is celebrating its 38th Summer Concert Series. By summer’s end, the picturesque outdoor amphitheater will have hosted concerts ranging from pop and jazz to rock and classical music. Although there are reserve seats available, the general admission seating on the lawn makes for a perfect date night or night out for a group. The winery allows you to bring in blankets, low-back chairs and picnic baskets with non-alcoholic drinks. Food and wine can be purchased on-site.

Marymoor Park is located in King County, county-owned and the largest, oldest and most popular park. The summer concert series, Concerts at Marymoor, provides an intimate outdoor concert experience. Outside beverages are not allowed in, but concert-goers are able to bring their own food, blankets and low-back chairs. Reserved seating is available, and there is general seating on the lawn. Parking is available on-site for $5 and is free for seasonal parking pass holders. Marymoor Parks spans more than 640 acres and is located next to the Clise Mansion.

The Hayden Homes Amphitheater is an independent, outdoor riverfront Amphitheater built in 2001. Since their first season in 2002 they have hosted over one million guests at their venue for ticketed and free concerts. All summer long the Amphitheater presents some of the biggest names in entertainment, and the second largest brewfest in the northwest every August. They are part of the Old Mill District, which incorporates shopping, dining, outdoor recreation, businesses and residences.
