Growing up locally, my family did all of the quintessential PNW activities: backpacking, river rafting, hiking, fishing, boating, skiing, etc. While I savor the memories, I actually don’t participate in much of those outdoor activities anymore, and this issue was a little motivation to revisit some of them. My dad actually contributed the fly fishing article this month (page 26), and is on the cover along with two of my nephews. I’m thinking maybe it’s time to put the waders on and join him this spring! For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore locally. This issue also highlights diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a restaurant with a great patio to enjoy, a fishing hole to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. We would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us an email or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. Here’s to a happy spring full of adventure!

The Rehab Diaries When I consult on home remodels, I always do so with an eye to meet the home owner’s personal needs, as well as their future resale return. First golden rule is; spend in proportion to the rest of your home and in direct correlation to your location. For those of you who’ve watched your fair share of HGTV, you’ll know that there are two main areas that yield the largest return; kitchens and bathrooms. In the first of a series of articles, I discuss what makes sense when planning out a kitchen remodel, all the way from flooring and cabinetry, to pulls and lighting.
Cabinetry: Your kitchen’s backbone. The biggest consideration for cabinetry outside of style, is function. Storage can be maximized in a small kitchen with pull outs, and custom slide inserts. The sweet spot is to spend a conservative amount on mid-range cabinetry that holds up to the test of time and looks like a million dollars too; think wood exteriors and dovetail drawers. Meanwhile, your island should be as spacious as you can fit into the space.
Slab counters are your kitchen’s crown jewel Quartz products still reign supreme. Ultra hard wearing and available in a plethora of color tones and patterns, this manufactured stone also comes at a variety of price points. It’s important to spend on high quality here, because countertops can make, or break, a kitchen. Pay attention to slab thickness too; standard is 3cm. I would not recommend going any slimmer than 2cm; it’s not nearly as hard wearing and it looks cheaper too.
Knobs, pulls and lighting are the icing on the cake Know that for resale (and for maximum return), it’s not worth going overboard here. No one will know how much you spent on these items, so as long as they look the part and are well made, your return is on the upside. In terms of lighting, while it may feel like a minor embellishment, in the same way that hardware is key to bringing cabinetry to life, the right light fixtures can take your kitchen from

REVELING I N O U R G R E AT OUTDOORS KIRKLAND LIFESTYLE INTERVIEWS SKI RACING BROTHERS ELI AND OLIVER HOESLEY (WITH MOM KYLA), AND JEFF UNDERWOOD, NORTHWEST PADDLE SURFERS OWNER ARTICLE BY BREE O'BRIEN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF INTERVIEWEES
THE HOESLEY B R OT H E R S HOW LONG HAVE EACH OF YOU BEEN SKIING? OH: I’m ten and started at four. EH: I’m eight and started when I was two. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN SKI RACING THROUGH THE CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN ALPINE CLUB? KH (MOM): Both boys did the off-piste freestyle ski at crystal last year and had so much fun. They would always try and do the race course at Crystal when no one was around - and they love the terrain park, so it seemed like a good challenge for them. WHAT DOES THE CMAC EXPERIENCE LOOK LIKE? KH: It’s been wonderful for the boys’ skiing abilities. They spend half of the day free skiing where they learn the racing fundamentals (getting the skis on edge, skiing on one ski at a time to help with balance) and doing 180’s for fun! The other half is centered around gate training, where they practice the slalom and giant slalom race course. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT SKI RACING? EH: I love the speed! OH: I love the competitive side, going fast and the free tee shirt at the end of the race! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO SKI? EH AND OH: In Washington - Crystal Mountain! EH: Out-of-state, Deer Valley (UT). OH: For me, Whitefish (MT).

JEFF UNDERWOOD
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED PADDLE BOARDING? JU: I’m 55 and have been paddle boarding for 15 years. I come to stand up paddle boarding from a surfing background. I first tried it on vacation in Kauai. HOW WOULD YOU ADVISE SOMEONE NEW TO PADDLE BOARDING TO GET STARTED? Renting is a great way to start. Make sure the board has enough volume to support your weight, a wider board will provide greater stability. A life jacket and whistle are required and an ankle leash is highly advised. With locations in Marina Park and Juanita Beach Park in Kirkland and near Seward Park in Seattle, Northwest Paddle Surfers provides basic technique and safety instruction to all customers. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT PADDLE BOARDING? I love paddle boarding as it’s a fantastic all-body workout and you can do it in beautiful natural settings. Standing provides a unique perspective on water trails, and you can see more under water. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO PADDLE BOARD? Juanita Bay in Kirkland is a terrific place to paddle. It is chock full of wild-life: otters, beavers, herons, eagles, ospreys, waterfowl and fish. You can also take in the beautiful waterfront homes that line the shore. If you get too hot on a summer day, you can simply jump in the lake to cool off!
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree - Jeff's daughter Camille also enjoys paddle boarding.

Get Hooked on these Fly Fishing Locations for All Ages and Skill Levels ARTICLE BY JOHN AGNEW | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARA MERCER The lure of the outdoors in Pacific Northwest spring and summer is irresistible. One of the best contexts for getting ‘out there’ can be fishing. Truly, introducing kids/grandkids to this great past time can lead to some real magic. Imagine building years of memories of times together on the plentiful lake, river, stream, and salt water fisheries just a short drive from Kirkland. You don’t need to be an expert to get started, you can be on the water in no time! We are rich in accessible fisheries. For short outings with the kids in the early stages, try one of the many juvenile only fishing holes right close by: 1. The Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River is accessible, beautiful, easily waded, and can be very productive. For more info,
visit: unaccomplishedangler.com/tag/middle-fork-snoqualmieriver-fly-fishing/ 2. Rattlesnake Lake is best fished from some sort of small boat or raft. It too is beautiful and we’ve had some wonderful evenings full of fish. For more info, visit: flyfishsnoqualmie.com/2010/04/ rattlesnake-lake-report-and-controversy.html 3. Try a guided fly fishing trip. Talk to the gang at Red’s on the Yakima River. They will set you up with an experienced guide for beginners. Spending a day with an expert, picking flies, tying knots, casting and getting coaching on the spot really shortens the learning curve. Fresh Air The Cross Kirkland Corridor is a 5.75-mile former rail line which has been fully renovated as a ‘walk and roll’ vehicle-free trail. Traversing the city, from South Kirkland to Totem Lake, the corridor connects eight neighborhoods and several parks with gorgeous views of Lake Washington. Specific spots to stop along the way include: Carillon Woods – a forest park with natural greenspaces, nature trails, children’s play area, and paved walking path. Merrily Dicks’ Spikes sculpture – Built using old railroad spikes found along the Cross Kirkland Corridor, this public art is on the northwest side of the 85th Street underpass. Follow the blue arrows between downtown Kirkland and Carillon Point to enjoy the stunning 1.2-mile Lakeview Walk, which winds past waterfront parks, offering spectacular views alongside Kirkland’s charming collection of public art. In the heart of downtown, adjacent to many restaurants and shops, Marina Park is the hub of local life and offers a sandy beach — perfect for getting your toes wet — as well as a beautiful open-air pavilion with magnificent views of Lake Washington and Seattle. The park is home to many of Kirkland’s special events, including the Fourth of July Celebration and Kirkland Uncorked. Bridle Trails State Park is a 489-acre state park within Kirkland’s boundaries providing 28 miles of trails that welcome equestrians, hikers and other visitors. Located between Kirkland and Redmond, it’s often called “the wilderness in the city”. The mission of Northwest Paddle Surfers, located in Juanita Beach, is to introduce the low-key sport of stand-up paddleboarding to as many people as possible. Residents and visitors can reserve kayaks and multiperson stand-up paddleboards, as well as try PaddleFlow® yoga. Season opens in spring. CONTINUED >

HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO CREATE OVER 30 SHORT FILMS CHRONICLING YOUR FAMILY’S ADVENTURES? Originally, my motivation was knowing that when I’m old I’ll be crying playing these films on a loop and they’ll be my most valuable possessions. The act of filmmaking forces me to take in the entire experience: lighting, dialogue, scenery. It’s hard and consuming, but when I’m done I feel like I’ve created something.

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR FAMILY TO DO ALL OF THE OUTDOOR SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES YOU DO? When I was dating my now-wife, I described the kind of life I wanted for my future family. My description was full of waterfalls, mountains and rock walls. She loved the same things but eventually I realized that our understandings of those places were different. I saw them as arenas to achieve mastery and work through mental, emotional and physical barriers. Veronica pursued them as a way to explore and experience something new. WHAT IS A FAVORITE OUTDOOR MEMORY FOR YOUR FAMILY? Our first overnight sea kayaking trip to a tiny island in the San Juans. We had three sea kayaks and too much gear for a single trip. I raced 45 minutes to the island to drop off our gear, then returned to pick up Tilly Jane who was six at the time and Ivan, four. I put them in my kayak and Eleanor, eight, and Veronica each paddled their own. We explored the island that day and the next before returning to Orcas Island to take the ferry back, but we barely missed it and had to wait hours for the next one. Initially we were bummed, but Veronica and I drank beers on the dock and the children and I danced to Ingrid Michaelson playing out of a cell phone speaker. After dark we played hide-and-seek in the park until the ferry arrived.

ANY PLANS FOR THE NEXT BIG ADVENTURE? I’ve got two for which we’ve been preparing: the first is a three-week whitewater kayaking trip to Ecuador, hopefully before Eleanor graduates from high school. The other adventure is the 1,000-mile Inside Passage, from Skagway, Alaska to Houghton Beach in Kirkland. I just can’t imagine a more fulfilling experience as a father.
