Reflecting on 2022 as we embark on its 4th quarter, I can’t help but smile. The last few years have presented many challenges for all of us. We’ve had to navigate the different iterations and surprises of the pandemic along with continued stress and uncertainty in whatever ways we could make work. For over two years we were in a kind of limbo and totally disconnected from so much that we know and love. Finally, this year I think we’ve turned a corner. 2022 is allowing us to come together again. We’ve been able to reconnect with friends and family. Hugs and handshakes are coming back. We’ve come together for big events and intimate gatherings. It is this coming together again throughout 2022 that puts a smile on my face. And what a year it has been. We kicked off 2022 with a surge of joyful adrenaline at the Polar Bear Plunge in January. We dove into the new year and Lake Washington with abandon at the return of this beloved tradition, now hosted by the City of Kirkland. We enjoyed nights out under the stars at the Wheels and Reels drive-in movie series from February through April. The City’s giant LED movie screen beamed beloved films at Juanita Beach Park while we stayed cozy in our cars. In May, our taste buds were transported at Taste of the World. This multi-cultural experience celebrated our diverse heritage with multiple food trucks with world flavors, an international bazaar, and live cultural music and dance. We danced our way into June in the pouring rain at Kirkland Urban’s Wear Your Pride festival. Acrobatic performances captivated us, a drag queen show

entertained us, and lively roller-skating performances impressed us. A live DJ kept the energy going for this larger-than-life, bright, and celebratory event. The next day, we celebrated and honored Black joy and liberation at the Eastside Honoring Juneteenth event at Juanita Beach Park. We learned more about the history of Juneteenth, heard from speakers and booth resources, and celebrated the day’s significance with a DJ and performances. A few weeks later, we gathered en masse at the joyful return of the Celebrate Kirkland Fourth of July parade and festivities. The grand procession again wound its way through downtown and featured local shops, dance groups, cultural groups, and much more. Folks from throughout Kirkland – and beyond – came out in droves to celebrate our county’s independence at this anchor of Kirkland’s annual events. The next week, we gathered to celebrate the expansion of Feriton Spur Park on the Cross Kirkland Corridor, in the heart of Google’s 6th Street campus. We savored the live music and food trucks and laughed over pickleball and lawn games. The evening also marked the grand opening of Chainline Brewing’s café and tap room housed inside a historic Pacific Northwest Railway Caboose. As July stretched into August, we lounged on blankets and lawn chairs at the Summer Outdoor Movie series at Juanita Beach Park and Heritage Park. We dined on delicious food truck fare and snacked on yummy popcorn while enjoying free double features on the City’s immense LED screen. Taste of the World Event

“I am grateful, with 2023 just around the corner, that we have found our way back to each other and will continue to take every opportunity to celebrate that.” Series, and Oktoberfest were just a few of the fun events that brought us out for connection and revelry amidst the sun and long days. 2022 also saw a major milestone for O.O. Denny Park. The Finn Hill Neighborhood Alliance hosted the park’s Centennial celebration as part of the annual Denny Fest event. We danced and sang along to live music and enjoyed engaging booths and conversations on Labor Day Weekend. Even our furry family members found the fun! Countless canine companions enjoyed a day of soggy serenity at this year’s See Spot Splash event – a splashful end of summer at the Peter Kirk Pool. As we fully fell into Fall, we enjoyed a bushel of family fun at the Harvest Festival. Thousands came out to this year’s event, which included activities and attractions for young and old. The Kid’s Korral featured faux cow milking, bull roping, ring toss, horseshoes, pumpkin bowling, crafts, and pony rides. And the more competitive among us dove into the pie-eating and corn-shucking contests for both adults and children.

Yet our connections weren’t only festivities and celebrations. They were also supportive of our community’s well-being. In October, King County Promotores Network organized an impactful Health and Wellness Fair for our community, sponsored by the City, Public Health – Seattle & King County and the Lake Washington School District. As we come back together after years apart, it’s critical that we continue to support the health of our community. Although there are many more events, milestones, and celebrations from 2022 that I could emphasize, I want to close by saying this: We see the true heart of Kirkland in the ways we are connected. Partnerships within our community, between businesses and organizations, between community members young and old – these connections demonstrate what makes Kirkland the city we all love. I am grateful, with 2023 just around the corner, that we have found our way back to each other and will continue to take every opportunity to celebrate that. Money Magazine may call us the 3rd best city in the country, but I think we’re number one!

I decided to participate in 20/20 LifeStyles to address some health challenges I’d struggled with for a while. I had high cholesterol, was borderline diabetic and was considered borderline obese based on my BMI. Also, I’d been on anti-depressants for about eight years and cholesterol meds for a long time and I wanted to get off them. One of the things that really appealed to me about 20/20 is that it’s focused on all aspects of weight loss. It’s not just about seeing a lower number on the scale. I met with a licensed counselor and doctors, in addition to my personal trainer and registered dietitian. Also, all the testing and blood work was very impressive. If I had to pick one aspect of the program that was my favorite, I’d probably go with the nutrition appointments. My dietitian gave me a really good base to work with moving forward. I learned to cook some tasty dishes, including the turkey burgers and the spicy fish, which I really like—and my family does, too. They already did pretty good with their eating and exercise habits – but they’ve started to eat more of the food I make. It’s nice to share that together.

A really cool part of the program is the genetic testing. It helps guide the workouts the trainers create for you, as well as the nutrition program the dietitians create for you. I found that I have a high tolerance for caffeine, which was surprising—and welcome news! I think the biggest change for me is simply that I’m down to a weight that I haven’t been since I was in my 20s. Even when I was in great shape in my 30’s, I wasn’t as lean as I am now. I’ve met my weight loss goal, and with one month left to go, I’m shaving off another 5 pounds of fat. The good news is that my clothes fit better. Actually, they no longer fit! I had to buy all new pants, shirts and shorts! My energy level has gotten so much better, and my mood and overall outlook on life is better. I’m exercising regularly now, too. Running, taking walks and working out is all part of my everyday life. If I could share three tips I learned from the program that helped me reach my goals, they’d be: (1) Start tracking what you eat. (2) Work out at least 3 or 4 times a week, and make sure to include strength work. (3) Set a specific time every day for exercises. It’ll help you build a habit you can keep long-term. My experience with 20/20 LifeStyles was incredible, and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to get serious about improving their health.

The best thing in Kirkland for 2022 is being together again. Fully present with each other and celebrating that sense of community connection. Events and festivals came back, bringing smiles to the faces of thousands of people. Workplaces came back together, allowing for in-person collaboration. Schools reopened for in-person instruction, bringing the beautiful sounds of children playing at recess and expressing their joy for life and living in the present moment. 2022 is the comeback year for Kirkland. As the original epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States, our community has had to overcome a lot. I’m so proud of how our business community has shown incredible resilience and tenacity over the past couple of years, particularly in the rebirth of togetherness that we have seen this year. Not all businesses were able to survive, but those who did, are coming out the other side and breathing a sigh of relief. The Kirkland Chamber of Commerce and Kirkland Chamber Foundation

also celebrated coming back together in some big ways: hosting a large annual gala, expanding our diversity, equity, and inclusion programming, and starting our much-anticipated scholarship fund. Our theme for the diversity, equity, and inclusion program for 2022 is “workforce re-entry.” Many individuals who have been incarcerated at some point in their lives find difficulty in coming out of prison into a world of hope for a steady career due to their record of imprisonment. Giving people second chances, with hope for a stable future, helps prevent recidivism, brings more talent into the workforce, and provides a chance at a better life for those who have already paid for mistakes in their past. We were proud to host a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Symposium featuring a panel of subject matter experts to shine a light on the complexities of issues involved in the criminal justice system, and the barriers faced by those who wish to come away from the experience with the ability to find a legal stream

of income and employers who will give them a chance. As a follow-up to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Symposium, a scholarship fund was put into place in partnership with Lake Washington Institute of Technology to allow two formerly justice-involved individuals to enter into a program at the school to lead to a viable career. We are so proud of this work, putting our programs into action, and seeing the reward of changing lives. For us, this is the best thing in 2022, living our mission and seeing the results. Moving into 2023, my hope is that we will see new businesses come to Kirkland, bringing their hopes, dreams, and ideas into our city. Our growing community needs more opportunities to shop locally, keeping our dollars here. Residents of Kirkland are loyal to our local businesses, which has been vital to their success throughout the pandemic. Local, family-owned businesses employ the families and friends of those in need which in turn helps give them the resources to take on their personal challenges. They create a local tax base that makes it possible for the arts and schools to thrive. They are also often called upon to lend support local causes in the form of monetary gifts, in-kind donations, and volunteer time. Having so many of these locally owned businesses in Kirkland makes us special and helps to create that sense of pride in the community. My challenge to the community for 2023 is to commit to more local shopping. We vote with our dollars for the community that we want around us. Let’s vote to keep Kirkland charming, vibrant, supportive, and prosperous.

Beyond the Apps: How Seattle Can Tackle the Mental Health Crisis with Integrated Team-based Care By Michael Boroff, PsyD

Siloed care delivery by primary care providers and mental health specialists leaves vulnerable patients untreated. Mental health integration is essential to remedying the mental health crisis in the Seattle area and nationwide.

Addressing access for the whole patient. As of 2020 in the U.S., 52.9 million people, or 1 in 5 adults, experienced mental illness. During the pandemic, 4 in 10 adults reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder. Unfortunately, in our current paradigm– in which mental and physical health are viewed separately, there’s a shortage of services that address mental health issues as part of a comprehensive care plan, which holds us back from making sustainable progress. We’ve swung the pendulum on stigma and people are raising their hands for care, but now what? Employers are still grappling with a sea of apps and the best path for integrating care delivery. While society has embraced broader acceptance of digitally-enabled care models, are they really going to “solve” the mental health crisis– particularly when they work in isolation? More and more, one hears the term “whole-person care” being used. While there is some debate about what that is, in mental health, it’s a technology application that is supported with integrated care along a continuum, not an app in a silo. Certainly there are use cases for apps, but without an integrated primary care provider, there’s no single care partner to guide patients on their mental and physical wellness journey. Fragmented, siloed care actually restricts the visibility of caring providers and further contributes to the stigma associated with mental health challenges.

Treating mental and physical health as one. The American Medical Association asserts that the solution is found in behavioral health integration (BHI), which incorporates both mental and physical healthcare into delivery of services, in part, through digital enablement. In tandem with traditional interaction between providers and patients, technology that leverages digital tools for functions like screening and intake, telehealth services, and clinical decision support will help engage more people in mental health treatment and aid providers in its adoption and delivery. That’s good news for the entire Seattle community. Further, the AMA and other leading medical associations established the BHI Collaborative, a group that seeks to empower physicians to expand access to mental health services through primary care settings and take a holistic, integrated approach that focuses on the well-being of the whole person.

The AMA has brought to light a very serious issue that many employers are already aware of: the current paradigm – which silos physical and mental health care – is not working. So why do employers here in Seattle– and across the country– continue to settle for less? It’s about to change.

Turning the research into actionable care delivery. Patient-centered primary health is a straightforward path for patients to see their primary care clinicians and mental health providers in a truly integrated fashion. More and more, employers are embracing an integrated model that engages patients and facilitates adoption by providers throughout the entire patient journey– a journey from access to results.

Backed by data that supports a new model of care. The data proves the premise: a recent poll found that two out of every five adults suffered from moderate to severe mental health issues during the pandemic also found adults reported difficulty sleeping (36%) or eating (32%), increases in alcohol consumption or substance use (12%), and worsening chronic conditions (12%). Isolation, job loss, health concerns, and excessive worry during this unprecedented time has had a major impact on well-being. A lack of treatment for mental health conditions costs the U.S. more than $100 billion annually. When desiring help, patients often turn to primary care providers, who report that 70% of all visits include a behavioral health component. In fact, nearly two thirds of people experiencing depression and other common mental health conditions are treated exclusively in primary care settings. Unfortunately, these providers may not be trained in optimal treatment methods, underscoring the need for collaboration with and among mental health clinicians. Crossover recently evaluated the effectiveness of its integrated approach in responding to the mental health crisis. When comparing the clinical outcomes of more than 3,000 Crossover patients to patients in the community, study results showed Crossover to be significantly more effective than the community in improving overall mental health outcomes. The data from our study and throughout this post reaffirms that an approach to interdisciplinary care works – and the urgent call for inclusion of mental health within primary care models rings loudly. Mental wellness cannot merely be managed by isolated transactions or singular care episodes. Instead, personalized care of each patient, backed by established doctor/patient relationships, has the power to improve overall quality of life. Isn’t that the result every patient in Seattle, and across the country, deserves?

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
