here’s nothing more influential than someone who walks the walk — no matter where that path leads. Heather Dahl, a certified laser technician and licensed master aesthetician at Strother Dermatology in Kirkland, is her own testimonial. “My natural hair color is almost black, and I used to have to shave twice per day because I had so much thick body hair. And I inherited my grandmother’s beard by the time I was 20. Laser hair removal was a life-changer, for sure.” Changing lives for the better is what makes Dahl’s career fulfilling — she knows firsthand how it feels on the inside when you look your best on the outside. In a word — it’s transformative.

Is It Over Yet? IS IT OVER YET? Many of us have been waiting for this year to end from nearly the time it began. 2020 marked the beginning of a brand-new decade that many looked at with optimism and as a chance at a new lease on life. But as it comes to a close, many are now wondering if this year can get any worse. We have endured a string of wild fires of apocalyptic measure, a series of escala-

tions that nearly brought Iran and the US to war, the death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant, social unrest over the killing of George Floyd, the deadly explosion in Beirut, murder hornets, and various other natural disasters - all under the cloud of the COVID19 coronavirus pandemic. As we approach year end, the virus not only lingers, but we are seeing astronomical spikes in positive cases and no real end in sight. So what’s in store? When will it ever end? The answer is, we don’t know. One thing I have learned in life, is that, yes, things can always get worse. Having said that, I’m doing my best to embrace the “new normal” (no matter how much I despise that term). I’m learning to live with it while I hold my loved ones close and cherish our family traditions. It shouldn’t take a global pandemic and a series of tragedies and disasters to help us realize that what’s most important in life is what is right in front of us. Our loved ones, our family and our friends. We are replaceable at work, replaceable on a team,

AFTER MONTHS OF BEING STUCK INSIDE WITH BLANK WALLS, REFRESH YOUR SPACE JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS. Maybe you have a zoom call with family scheduled so you can be together this holiday season, or your coworkers are getting tired of looking at the stale space behind you. Either way having art in your home is great for your mental health and artwork libraries make it easy and affordable. Artwork libraries work like any other library: you check out the artwork, enjoy it in your space and return it by the due date. You can make an appointment with a Design Librarian to find the right artworks for your space or choose for yourself. ryan james fine arts Gallery, in Kirkland, offers a wide selection of original contemporary paintings by local fine artists that you can rent for as low as $30 a month. The gallery will deliver, install, and pick up the work. Art rental is a great way to test out art in your home before you make a buying decision or just to keep your space looking fresh. For artists, the rental library is a great way for them to reach new potential clients. Artworks are due back to the library 3 months after the checkout date. This is a fun way to experiment to see if a pop of hot pink is what your room is missing or become comfortable with contemporary art and enjoy art from local artists. While you are a patron of the library, you accumulate gallery credits each time you check out the artwork. Then, when you find the perfect piece, you can use your credit towards purchasing artwork from the library. When you inevitably receive compliments from friends and family on your new art, tell them about ryan james fine arts, and both you and your referral receive a complimentary free month as a thank you. Come browse through our library in person or check out the entire selection on the library website.

Kirkland Lifestyle | December 2020

CATHERINE FERRERA HAS BEEN A RESIDENT OF KIRKLAND FOR NINETEEN YEARS AND OF THE GREATER SEATTLE AREA FOR THIRTY. In 2003, she became a real estate agent. She has raised her family here and is passionate about Kirkland and the Northwest. “Kirkland is a place that feels urban and smalltown all at the same time”. Recently, Catherine joined Compass Real Estate, a national real estate company that offers great tools for sellers and buyers. One of those tools being Compass Concierge; this service allows a seller to update or fix items in their home prior to putting it on the market. Compass pays for the renovations upfront, which the homeowner pays back to the company at closing. This is essentially an interest-free loan, and Catherine and her team manage the process, including helping find the contractors needed and managing the project. Recently, this part of her business has really taken off and she was so excited to learn that her daughter, McKenna Ferrera wanted to join her team to help manage this process. McKenna graduated from Gonzaga University, where she studied finance and entrepreneurship while playing Division I soccer. Since then, she has been working at a real estate development firm based in the affordable housing sector. While she loved learning about the multifamily side of the industry, she wanted to move toward the creative, and client-facing sector that residential offers. “This pandemic has really made us all reflect on our situations and future goals. I have always been interested in the creativity and potential of residential homes and real estate, and I realized that I was inspired by exactly what my mother has done with her business and clients.” Living in Seattle and having grown up in Kirkland, McKenna offers an insightful perspective of the greater Seattle area. “I feel really thankful to have this opportunity, that the timing was right, and that I get to work with my mom and bestfriend.” For Catherine it was an easy decision to have McKenna join the team, “I always secretly, or not so secretly wanted one of my kids to join the team. I am lucky to love what I do and want McKenna to experience that passion and satisfaction of helping a family or individual find their dream home!” The Ferrera Team hopes your holiday season is filled with gratitude, peace and good health.

F YOU FIND YOURSELF ROMANTICIZING OVER THE COLORFUL AND SHINY CHRISTMAS TREES OF YESTERYEAR, YOU MIGHT HAVE GROWN UP

WITH A TREE COVERED IN METICULOUSLY PLACED TINSEL, OR PERHAPS YOUR GRANDMOTHER OWNED AN ALUMINUM TREE THAT TWIRLED WITH A SPINNING COLOR WHEEL TO LIGHT IT UP. Regardless of the style you remember, chances are the tree had Shiny Brite ornaments hanging from its branches. These unique glass ornaments were created by Max Eckardt in 1937, but by the 1940s, almost every home in America had Shiny Brites decorating their Christmas trees for the holiday season. This made them the largest ornament manufacturer in the world during the 1950s. Before World War Two, Shiny Brites were coated in silver nitrate making them both shiny and bright. However, as soon as the war was declared, the company was forced to strip the baubles of their glistening complexions as decorative silver nitrate was deemed a nonessential use of metal. Not long after, the Shiny Brite company came up with a solution that would make their ornaments one of the most sought after products by antique collectors decades later; transparent glass balls, this time with hand painted color on the exterior, were manufactured during the war. In 1945, restrictions on metal were withdrawn, and the original Shiny Brite ornament was reborn. The 1950s saw a production rate of 1,000 Shiny Brite ornaments per minute. Unfortunately, this mass production was short-lived as artificial trees became popular in the early 1960s, coinciding with the making of cheaper plastic tree ornaments. This led to the Shiny Brite company closing its doors in 1962. Today these vintage Christmas decorations have proven to be highly collectible, especially when found in pristine condition and their original boxes. No matter the decade, shiny and bright are two things decorators can’t live without during the holidays.

Ornately designed tree toppers arranged in vintage bottles and a soda pop crate add a whimsical touch to any Christmas display.

FESTIVE TORTELLINI CAPRESE

STYLE & EASE

THIS YEAR THE HOLIDAYS ARE LIKELY GOING TO LOOK A LITTLE DIFFERENT. There probably won't be the office holiday party or the neighbor's Ugly Sweater soiree. We may not be hosting the White Elephant gift exchange or gathering all the extended family for Christmas dinner. But we CAN still bring a little cheer to the table with healthy meals made with love. For many families, the holiday feast is a potluck affair. But with less people coming to dinner, that also means less people contributing to the cooking. So some menu items have got to be quick and easy! Cue these Tortellini Caprese Skewers w/ Pesto Sauce - full of flavor, timely color, and simple to prepare. This recipe can also easily be made ahead, just keep cold in the fridge.

bullet journaling 101

Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-

and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off. With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute, anything we
