Introduc ing STEPHANIE MARTINEZ, LME COOLSCULPTING PRO Stephanie Martinez knows what it feels like to be uncomfortable in your own skin — she went down that too-common dark rabbit hole starting in middle school when another kid told her that she needed to join a weight-loss program. “Growing up I never thought I had a terrible body, or that I found myself thinking I was fat, until this one day in middle school,” Martinez said. “I was devastated and from that point on, I was always down about myself and my body image.” In high school, Martinez was on the varsity soccer team from her freshman year on and was a size 12. She wore sweatshirts to hide her body, even in the scorching Central Washington summer. “My family would always tell me, ‘You are an athlete, you have a lot of muscle, that is why you are big.’ None of those comments helped me with my confidence.” Martinez started working for Strother Dermatology in May 2018, and she is their CoolSculpting specialist. CoolSculpting is a non-surgical, fat-reducing treatment that helps with those stubborn problem areas when diet and exercise aren’t enough. She loves her job because she helps her clients get real results — and more importantly, feel better in their own skin. “My main focus — and why I love what I do — is to help others not feel the way I used to,” she said. “Every single patient who walks through my door will feel happy, confident, and reassured that I have a plan for them — and it will work! They will leave here feeling better than when they came in.” Martinez always has been the kind of woman who enjoys lifting others up and helping them feel their best. Even though she was a self-described “tomboy” in high school who loved sports, picking apples on the family orchards, playing in the dirt, and rescuing stray animals, she was also the girl who did everyone’s hair and make-up. Her natural talents led to bridal consultant and make-up artist jobs. Eventually, she enrolled in esthetics school: “My whole world opened up, there was so much more than just make-up.” She quickly learned dermatology was her calling — and CoolSculpting really got her fired up. “What got me into CoolSculpting was the desire to change a patient’s outlook of STROTHER, MD themselves. We are lucky enough to live in one of the finest, most culturally diverse and welcoming cities in the USA, but that doesn't come easy. Many of our parents, relatives and friends have donned the greens or the dress blues and have given selflessly to fight for our rights—and what wonderful rights we have! When you see those Vietnam, Korean War or WWII hats from a distance, take a minute to walk over and thank a veteran because I guarantee you that they wear those hats with pride. These brave men and women fought for our independence and have sacrificed more than you or I might ever know, but we all reap the benefits of their valiance each and every day. Blonde Ambition ANGELA FULTON HAS BIG HOPES AND PLANS FOR THE AESTHETIC DERMATOLOGY DEPARTMENT AT STROTHER DERMATOLOGY

IF YOU WERE TO ASK SOMEONE WHAT THE LARGEST ORGAN OF THE HUMAN BODY IS, YOU MIGHT GET SOME INTERESTING RESPONSES. This isn’t something we normally think about, as we tend to take our bodies and their functioning for granted. The answer, at least from an external standpoint, is the skin. Not only does skin provide a protective barrier for the body, but it is also one of the largest contributors to how one is perceived as a person in the world. This is a fact that Angela Fulton, a certified physician’s assistant and director of aesthetics at Strother Dermatology, is acutely aware of, and it is a motivating force behind her practice.

Early Life Angela is an increasingly uncommon phenomenon in this area: a native born and bred Washingtonian. She was raised in Carnation and enjoyed all the pleasures of growing up in a rural setting: horses, chickens, 4H Club and more. It was an idyllic and quiet life, made more so by the fact that both her parents and grandparents are deaf. She and her brother would converse and are also fluent in sign language, but so many of the modern amenities that fill our lives, such as ubiquitous television and radio, were not as much of a factor in hers. To this day, she prefers that the radio be off when driving. “Why not just enjoy the view out the window?” she says.

Education and Training At the age of 17, Angela attended Lake Washington Technical College and then started working as a medical assistant in cancer care, family medicine and emergency medicine. This inspired her to pursue further training as a physician’s assistant at the University of Washington. Although she didn’t have a specialty in mind when she entered UW, she soon gravitated toward dermatology, a decision informed by her own experience with acne as a teenager. She sought help from Dr. Cooperrider, a front-runner in aesthetic dermatology and the founder of what is now Strother Dermatology, and it changed her life. She did her preceptorship with Dr. Cooperrider and Dr. Strother and then was hired there after graduation and completing state certification.

Acne as Inspiration Although she was grateful for the cure she found for her acne, the treatments available now have changed a lot in the last two decades. Angela is diligent about keeping up with the latest developments in aesthetic dermatology. “In addition to lights and lasers, there are many more modalities such as topical treatments that are easier on your skin, easier to tolerate,” she says. “Many people prefer these to oral medications.” Following in Dr. Cooperrider’s footsteps, Angela is growing the aesthetic side of the business. While there is some overlap between medical and aesthetic dermatology, aesthetic dermatology is generally concerned with enhancing appearance. That said, if someone has scarring from a surgical procedure, the minimization of it may be no less important to the client than the surgery itself.

Keeping Up Appearances Personal appearance is important to anyone, and modern aesthetic dermatology can bring about remedies not available in the past. Angela described an example of a non-medical condition but a nonetheless disconcerting one. “A client this morning told me, ‘People tell me I look angry,’ and she wanted this to change.” Angela was able to offer suggestions, such as Botox, to help minimize frown lines. Another client had the inability to smile because of facial paralysis, and Angela was able to offer some solutions. “I can change the way someone feels on the inside by changing the way they look on the outside.”

A Brave New World The realm of aesthetic dermatology is changing rapidly thanks to developing technologies. Angela discussed several cutting-edge treatments. One area that she is particularly interested in growing is the body-contouring department. Cool laser technology allows for the permanent dissolution of targeted areas of fat as the application freezes it. Cool laser body sculpting is not an alternative to the tummy tuck or liposuction, but it is good for someone who has tried to lose that Angela enjoys living in Kirkland with her husband and their two children.

PRP Treatment Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein derived from a patient’s own blood, centrifuged to remove red blood cells. It has been used by athletes to hasten recovery from soft-tissue damage, but it can also be injected into the scalp to promote hair growth, or it can be injected or infused via microneedling on the face to reduce wrinkles and lines by increasing cell growth and collagen production. Sciton Joule The Sciton Joule sounds like a name straight out of science fiction, but it is actually a laser peel skin treatment tool. Laser treatments increase collagen production, which improves skin thickness and resilience, according to Sciton. This can help with deep wrinkles such as those found around the mouth and eyes, scarring, actinic keratosis and skin texture. It is most commonly used on the face and neck. On the horizon at Strother Dermatology, Angela says, are muscle stimulation treatments to improve muscle tone. She has demoed several units but is waiting to see what develops in this emerging field.

Preventive Measures As we ease into the midst of summer, it’s worth asking what can be done to prevent skin sun damage. Angela has some simple but effective advice—if it is put it into practice. When outside, wear sun-protective (SPF) clothing. Wear a broad-brimmed hat. Seek shade when possible. Avoid being outdoors in the prime sun exposure hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. And, lastly, wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Angela says most people don’t understand

Located in Old Town are two of the city’s historic churches, San Vicente and the Basilica of Santa Maria. San Vicente, the older of the two and Gothic in design, was built in the first half of the 16th century. Mounted on an exterior wall you’ll find a stone sculpture of the “Pieta,” while the church’s interior houses a Romanesque altarpiece and impressive stained-glass windows. The Basilica of Santa Maria is a baroque parish church completed in 1774. The entrance to the church is recessed and marked by two richly adorned towers. Within the recess, the figure of San Sebastian Martir, patron saint of the city, is displayed. Among other treasures, the interior of the church contains classically styled pieces which make up the central and side altars. While in Old Town, the San Telmo Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in the local culture. Sitting at the foot of Monte Urgull, this impressive building dates back to the 16th century and was once a Dominican convent before it was converted to an artillery barracks. The museum highlights both old and contemporary Basque culture along with a full calendar of original art exhibitions. The San Telmo received a special mention in the 2013 Best European Museum contest. For those interested in further exploring the region’s history, it’s worth noting that the renowned Guggenheim Museum, 64 miles away in Bilbao, can be reached by an ALSA bus in just over an hour.

Once back at the foot of Monte Igueldo and further along the promenade to the end of Ondarreta Beach, you’ll come across one of San Sebastian’s better-known sculptures. The Comb of the Wind, a three-part monument of oxidized steel, was completed in 1976 by Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Emerging from the rocks, the three pieces form a triangle that juts above the crashing waves. Haizearen Orrazia IV, as it’s known in the Basque language, is Chillida’s most important work. Upon completion, he donated the sculpture to the city. San Sebastian’s urban beaches have their own unique personalities: crescent-shaped Concha Beach is the best known of the three and the one most frequently featured in tourist publications; Ondaretta, with its volleyball nets and beach tennis, is a family favorite; and Zurriola, with its crashing waves, is popular with the surfing crowd. At night, Old Town bursts with charm. Sidewalk cafes, neon lights and music drifting from the many bars and clubs awaken the senses. Relax with a chilled glass of Txakoli, the local white wine; and a hearty plate of pintxos, sumptuous Basque-style tapas prepared with all regionally sourced ingredients. It’s customary for locals to stroll from one bar to the next sampling and enjoying along the way. Follow their lead, and by the end of the evening, you’ll have converted complete strangers into friends. Tourist cards can be reasonably purchased and used for bus transportation to all of San Sebastian’s major attractions. They’re also good for discounts on shopping, dining and entrance fees. Taxis are also available, although many of the more notable sites are within walking distance. San Sebastian is brewing with small-town appeal and big-city flavor. Stir in open-hearted locals, an abundance of natural beauty and a distinct culture with first-class dining, and you have all the essentials for a memorable vacation.

WHAT YOU DO:

+ 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil

In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isnâ€™t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than coldpressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you donâ€™t have a skinsafe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
