AS THE HOLIDAYS NEAR AN END, IT’S TIME TO PUT ASIDE ALL OF THE TRIMMINGS AND TAKE ON THAT PERSONAL QUEST FOR NEW BEGINNINGS. Where better to start those renewed goals in this new year than with a breath of fresh mountain air? Nestled in the Cascade Mountains and located just 80 miles east of Seattle hides the small town of Roslyn, Washington. Founded in 1886 as a coal mining town, Roslyn is probably still best known for the 1990s television series Northern Exposure. Primarily small and off the beaten path, for decades Roslyn remained relatively quiet with its simple ways. However, today the town is re-energized with the Pacific Northwest’s booming economy and growing population. Take a step forward toward those resolutions, although it will feel like a step back in time, as you visit Roslyn and enjoy all of the beauty and recreation that Seattle’s backyard has to offer. FINDING A GOOD MATCH After completing his training, he and a business partner, Dr. Frank Baron, owned Island Dermatology on Mercer Island. Dr. Strother and his wife had two young daughters then, and trying to run and own a business was challenging in a family of two physicians. He later sold his interest in the practice and shortly after joined Dr. Peter Cooperrider at his Laser Treatment Center in Kirkland. Dr. Strother had met Dr. Cooperrider when he was a resident, and the doctor approached him about working with him. At first, Dr. Strother was happy to be an employee rather than an owner. “As a medical resident, you don’t really get any business training,” Dr. Strother says. But several years later, Dr. Cooperrider decided to retire, and Dr. Strother once again had the opportunity to own a business. “You can either buy it, or you’re going to have a new boss,” Dr. Cooperrider says. Dr. Strother decided to take the plunge. Dr. Cooperrider had established a respected practice and was an early innovator in laser treatments. From the 1980s on, he had a reputation as being in the vanguard of this technology. “He loved new gadgets,” Dr. Strother says, “and he taught locally and internationally.” TAKING OVER A PRACTICE Dr. Strother bought the practice in 2013, and since then he has not only maintained the practice but also sought to grow it. He says he loves the business. “I get to take care of a whole age range of patients; that part is fun,” he says. Being the office pathologist and reading 90 percent of the biopsies of his practice also allows him to indulge his fascination with microscopic examination. Strother Dermatology provides both medical and aesthetic dermatology services. In 2019, the office will be contracting with Medicare so the medical part of the practice will likely grow, along with the aesthetic side. Dr. Strother says they don’t compete with plastic surgeons but rather provide medically based aesthetic services, which are in demand in Kirkland. A big part of Dr. Strother’s practice is teaching patients. “I enjoy educating people,” he says. If people are intimidated by the thought of visiting a dermatologist for a problem, “this takes the fear out of it,” he says. 18

It also involves really listening to patients about what is bothering them and tailoring a treatment to what they need for their particular issue. The treatment is very individualized, he says. “I try to think, ‘If I were going to approach this for myself, what would I need to know in order to make a decision that is right for me?’” FUTURE OUTLOOK One cannot wrap up a conversation with a dermatologist without asking about the best ways to take care of one’s skin. Dr. Strother named his top three: 1. Protect yourself from UV light (if you’re unconvinced of sun damage, he says, compare the inside of your arm with the outside of your arm; they’re both the same age); 2. Maintain a healthy lifestyle in terms of a balanced diet, exercise and enough sleep; and 3. If you’re a smoker, stop! Dr. Strother has seen growth and change in dermatology practice in the last decade. For example, men are increasingly seeking solutions for their dermatological problems. “They are becoming more comfortable with changing their appearance,” he says. He added that most people are not looking for drastic change but rather to make smaller changes that make them feel a little more confident. The sheer variety of approaches one can take to addressing skin problems is part of what keeps it interesting. As for what’s on the horizon dermatologically, the research is really exciting, Dr. Strother says. Dermatology will benefit from genetic studies with new, targeted treatments that work with people’s genetic makeup. We’ll also see advances in anti-aging care along with more preventative measures, which may help reduce the need for more serious medical interventions later on. THE RESPONSE TO AN AGE-OLD QUESTION, “WHAT’S YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION?,” is given much thought this time of year. Maybe you have several small hills to climb, or perhaps you are facing one big mountain. Regardless, many of us will resolve to hit the gym and sweat it out as we tackle our hurdles. Although the gym is often a much more bearable solution to the impending Seattle rain, should you decide to opt outside and “get your sweat on” in true Seattle fashion, Kirkland is equipped with several of its own natural outdoor stair-steppers and presents many options for knocking down hills or climbing that mountain. When you decide it’s time to shed those holiday pounds, consider taking a breath of fresh air, clearing your head and beginning your climb on one of Kirkland’s natural stair-steppers. Perhaps you are new to town and weren’t aware of these hidden outdoor alternatives to the stationary stair-stepper, or like many of us, maybe you grew up exploring these trails and stairs throughout your entire childhood (before curfew of course). 210 stairs Bottom: Forbes Creek Drive Top: Crestwoods Park Handrail available The stairs at Forbes Creek are a Kirkland favorite when opting outside. 210 wooden railroad ties will leave you breathless and have your heart pumping in no time. Some might make this climb just once and feel like they’ve overcome their hurdle, while others might challenge themselves to summit the stairs numerous times before they’ve reached their personal goal. Head east on Forbes Creek Drive until you spot the turnout and yellow painted pole off to your right. There the stairs, and likely several others who are looking to face their mountain, will await you. Just a mile southeast of Juanita Village, enjoy a nice cool-down walk and all of the amenities you need in order to relax and revel in your conquest.

+ COTTON HILL PARK STAIRWAY 128 stairs Bottom: Cross Kirkland Corridor Top: 111th Avenue NE Residents from several Kirkland neighborhoods put forth a group effort to renovate these once dilapidated stairs. Thanks to these dedicated volunteers, the stairs are now much improved and provide an excellent workout. What was once a steep, slippery trail is now a sturdy stairway awaiting your climb. Travel north on Sixth Street, east on 12th Avenue, follow around the sharp bend to the left and all the way to the end where you will see the Cotton Hill Park sign. Just a few yards down the trail you will find this stairway on your right.

When you decide it’s time to shed those holiday pounds, consider taking a breath of fresh air, clearing your head and beginning your climb on one of Kirkland’s natural stair steppers.

“[Having Lakelyn] was a complete 180, and now every time I have a kid it switches in a different direction—in a good direction,” he continues. “My mindset 100 percent switched when we had Lakelyn. And when we had Trice. And then a third time when we had Violet—in good directions. It’s made me more well-rounded. Balance is hard; to be the best at anything, you can’t really be balanced. Now I’m trying to be the best father and husband I can be. It’s a good challenge; it’s fun.” Rich found some of that seemingly unattainable balance through his transition team competitions, which have allowed him more of an opportunity to think about training while he’s training and to not think about training while he isn’t. “I get to be present in my life,” he says. “[In individual], even when I was doing other things, I was still thinking about what I needed to do, what I was missing out on. “Competing as an individual for me, I got burnt out,” he continues. “It’s been fun the last couple of years to be able to compete with a team. You push harder when you know somebody else is counting on you, and seeing how hard they push and what they sacrifice makes you want to do the same for them.” Outside of the gym, Rich now spends much of his time using his experience as a CrossFit champion and exercise science degree from Tennessee Tech creating online programming for his gym, CrossFit Mayhem, which is located on Rich Froning Way.

“Winning championships is great, but it’s like the next year somebody else wins...I enjoyed that, but I don’t want that to be what defines me. I want to be known as a good husband, a good father.” Among them are Mayhem Compete, a program for those beginning to take competition seriously or who want to take their fitness to the next level; Mayhem Masters, a program for competitive athletes ages 35-70; What’s Rich Doing, a program offering exactly what Rich is doing every day; Mayhem 60, a complete 60-minute workout for anyone with a garage gym; and M30, a short 30-minute workout designed for someone who wants to work out at home or travels with no access to equipment. Looking toward the future, Rich is in pursuit of moving forward. “Winning championships is great, but it’s like the next year somebody else wins so it’s always different,” Rich says. “I enjoyed that, but I don’t want that to be what defines me. I want to be known as a good husband, a good father.
