Thank you for reading Kirkland Lifestyle, thank you for supporting my passion and my mission, and thank you so much for contributing to Kirkland Lifestyle’s success. As I reflect on our second issue and observe Kirkland’s landscape—the leaves turning and our town changing—I am overwhelmed with feelings of thanks, appreciation and gratitude. Spearheading Kirkland Lifestyle is not an easy undertaking, nor is it for the faint of heart. This endeavor is not for everyone, but it is most definitely for our community. Without all of you, Kirkland Lifestyle would not exist. It’s no secret that my mission when deciding to bring my publication to 10,000 mailboxes each month was to continue to highlight Kirkland then, Kirkland now and Kirkland’s future. Past, present and future Kirkland is so relevant and so important in the big picture of our city. Contrary to popular belief, we are no longer a small town. Kirkland has evolved into King County’s sixth largest and Washington State’s 12th largest city while retaining so many of the attributes that preserve our peaceful, quaint waterfront nature. Longtime Kirklanders may remember the days when JC Penny and Ben Franklin flanked Lake Street or shopping at the Lamonts and Ernst Hardware at Totem Lake Mall. Today, Kirkland represents a mix of urban contemporary and charming boutique, much different than it was a few decades ago but aware of the fine line between commercial and character.

When the Totem Lake Mall opened in 1973 as part of the Totem Lake Center, the air-conditioned venue with the Native American motif had dreams as high as the totem pole that marked its entrance. INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cut a layer off the top of the apples with a knife. With a melon baller tool or a measuring teaspoon, remove the core and seeds from each apple. 2. Pack 1/8 cup granola into each apple, and place into the slow cooker. 3. Drizzle the apples evenly with the melted butter, and add a teaspoon of maple syrup to each apple. 4. Cover, and cook on high for 2 to 2 1/2 hours until tender, but not falling apart.
