Your dream life is waiting.
Don’t Build What Nobody Wants If there’s one pattern I see repeat across early-stage startups and even well-funded teams, it’s this: founders spend months building something, only to learn nobody actually wants it. As a technology lawyer working with startups every day, I’ve seen this far too often. The ideas weren’t bad, the timing was. Validation came after the code, instead of before it. Here’s the reality: an idea isn’t great until customers say it is. Your enthusiasm, your team’s passion, and investors’ encouragement are not market signals. Revenue, commitments, pre-orders, pilot agreements, and genuine “yes, when can we start?” conversations are.
Set your schedule. Make an impact. Build a life you’re proud of. Behind each of our 200+ City Lifestyle magazines is someone who cares deeply about their community. Someone who connects people, celebrates businesses, and shares the stories that matter most. What if that someone was you? Or maybe it’s someone you know. If this isn’t the right time for you, but you know someone who could be the perfect fit, we’d love an introduction.
The best founders don’t begin by coding, they begin by listening. Before you incorporate or hire engineers, get deeply curious about future users. What are they already paying for? What slows them down, frustrates them, or costs too much? What keeps them up at night? You’re not searching for casual interest. You’re searching for real urgency, problems painful enough that people or businesses will line up to pay for a solution. Here’s what many first-time founders overlook: legally it’s far easier (and cheaper) to validate demand early than to unwind a product nobody buys. Once you’ve hired staff, signed contracts, and built systems around an unvalidated idea, your flexibility disappears. Burn rate takes over. Pivoting becomes difficult. So before writing a single line of code, ask yourself: Who is already asking for this? As a lawyer, and someone who cares about founders, my advice is simple: build something customers have already validated with a clear, enthusiastic “YES!”

Your story starts here.
Love Living Longer. Protect Your MuscLe
As a surgeon and wellness advocate, I’ve seen firsthand how vital it is to maintain our muscles and joints as we age.
After a life changing knee injury early in medical school, I learned the value of proper weight management and exercise—lessons I carry with me every day. I am grateful for a healthy body that allows me to work out and stay active. Did you know we lose about 1% of muscle mass each year after age 30? Even more concerning, studies show that people focusing solely on weight loss can lose up to 25% of their muscle mass in the first few months of dieting. This decline not only weakens us but increases the risk of falls, joint issues, and chronic pain, undermining overall vitality. Focusing on preserving and building muscle through strength training is essential for reversing or slowing this decline. It supports longevity, enhances joint stability, and helps maintain independence longer. Protecting your muscles and joints has clear benefits, including: Pros • Keeps your metabolism active and efficient • Maintains strength and mobility • Supports joint stability and reduces pain • Helps you stay independent longer • Improves overall quality of life
Cons • Faster physical decline • Higher risk of falls and fractures • Increased risk of injury and long-term disability • Higher healthcare costs later in life • Reduced ability to enjoy daily activities
Your muscles and joints are vital to living a vibrant, active life— cherish and nurture them as the precious assets they truly are. Dr. Matthew Graff, DPM

NO Shortcuts How Inspire Health Clinics Addresses the Root of Health Problems ARTICLE BY ABI FALIN HORSPOOL
Dr. Matthew Graff was on top of the world, the tip of King’s Peak, the highest point in Utah. The view was breathtaking, but its majesty was short-lived as Dr. Graff realized the hike up wasn’t the end. He still had to go down. He decided to take a shortcut, sliding down the shale-covered mountain. He injured himself multiple times and quickly realized the wisdom in taking the longer, safer way back. That’s the mindset Dr. Graff adopts in his work as a doctor. Although he always tries to be on the cutting edge of new techniques and technologies, he focuses on grounding patients in holistic healing methods before turning to Western medicine. “Everyone’s looking for a quick fix,” Dr. Graff says, but he doesn’t take shortcuts. He addresses the root of the problem, taking the longer way back, which often ends up being the better solution.. Four years ago, he founded Inspire Health Clinics in South Jordan with Heather Hardy, established with the motto “get well, get fit, and love life.” The clinic emphasizes improving patients’ “healthspan” as opposed to just their “lifespan.” The difference there is how long one lives healthy instead of just living. “We focus on the individual first and what they can do to optimize their health naturally,” Dr. Graff says.

He says that many health issues stem from poor habits. These changes can be as simple as going to bed on time instead of scrolling on your phone, or choosing to drink water instead of soda. “These things actually do make a huge difference in your health and your longevity,” he says. The clinic focuses on four core tenets: hormone therapy, weight loss, peptide therapy, and stem cell therapy. Whether it’s Botox or weight loss treatments, everything at Inspire Health Clinics is offered with long-term wellness in mind as well as physical and mental CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . well-being. “When you’re feeling well, you look better,” Dr. Graff says, “and when you look better, you feel better.” Growing up as the oldest child in a large family, Dr. Graff has been taking care of people for as long as he can remember. “It’s in my nature to try and help and to protect,” he says. Because he cares, he invites his patients to “stop living in pain.” Dr. Graff says people often come to him and say things like, “I thought everybody was tired all the time,” or “I thought

your feet were just supposed to hurt.” He says that if “your life isn’t exactly where you want it to be, [Inspire Health Clinics is] a safe place that will really try to come to the root of what’s going on.” “There’s enough pain and heartache that’s going to happen in life,” Dr. Graff says. “If your health is struggling, then get to the root cause of it and figure out if there’s something that can be done.”
Three Rules for Wise Financial Giving Ah, the joy of giving! Whether it’s helping a grandkid with college, giving your kid a down payment on a house, or just slipping them a little “fun money,” sharing your wealth feels good. But before you start writing checks like Santa in December, let’s pause for a quick financial reality check. First, give from abundance, not obligation. Make sure your own retirement, healthcare, and rainy-day funds are secure. Your kids can still get student loans—no one offers retirement loans! Second, understand the gift tax rules. The IRS lets you give up to $18,000 per person per year (as of 2025) without triggering paperwork. Married couples can double that. Larger gifts may need a simple tax form— not a big deal, but worth knowing. Third, think strategy, not spontaneity. Direct gifts can be great, but sometimes a 529 college plan, a custodial account, or even a family trust can stretch your gift’s impact (and protect it from being spent entirely on spring break in Cancun). Finally, talk about it. Money can stir up emotions faster than a Thanksgiving debate. Be clear about your intentions, whether it’s “for your education” or “for your future, not your fun.” Transparency today prevents tension tomorrow. So yes—give generously, wisely, and with love. After all, teaching financial responsibility might just be the greatest gift you’ll ever give.

“When people walk in the door, it’s almost like a weight is lifted.” For Rising Moon Minerals owner Jaime Osbahr, creating a crystal shop was never just about selling them. It began as something that brought her comfort during challenging moments. In just a year and a half, her Riverton store has become a place where others can feel that same sense of safety and ease. Jaime’s introduction to crystals came in December 2022 while her family prepared for her daughter’s major jaw surgery. Before the procedure, they were in Las Vegas for her daughter’s cheer competition. While looking for small stocking stuffers, Jaime picked up what would become her first crystal. She didn’t fully know why it stood out to her, but during that difficult time, she found herself drawn to it. It became a small source of strength and something she could hold onto when everything felt heavy. As she continued to learn about crystals, Jaime started collecting them and eventually began selling them at local markets. She loved the conversations she had with shoppers and the moments of connection that happened naturally. Over time, she realized she wanted a permanent space, a place where people could slow down, breathe, and maybe discover what they needed in the moment. That vision became clearer on Christmas Eve, a family tradition of dinner and a movie. While walking through Mountain View Village, Jaime spotted a small glass pop-up building. “I stopped and said, ‘That would be the perfect crystal shop.’” Six months later, Rising Moon Minerals opened its doors. Running a retail business has brought its challenges, Jaime says, but her “why” has stayed the same. “The most rewarding part is connecting with people, connecting with the community, and having an opportunity to share my knowledge and my products with people.” One moment in particular reminded her of why she started. On a rushed morning, she slipped an Apache tear crystal into her pocket without thinking much of it. Later that day, a first-time customer came in, sharing that the crystal was exactly what she was looking for, for her current situation. Jaime immediately gifted it to her. Later, she learned how meaningful that small gesture had been for the customer and her family. “To be involved in something like that is powerful for me,” Jaime says. She is also committed to honoring the earth. Jaime is intentional about where her crystals come from, carefully vetting each vendor to ensure ethical

sourcing that respects both people and the planet. Jaime hopes her shop’s environment reflects the care she has for the world, both for her local community and at large. “As you walk in,” Jaime says, “the point is to have you feel safe.” For her, the shop is more than a place to buy crystals. It is a space to breathe, reset, reconnect, and hopefully leave feeling rejuvenated. Rising Moon Minerals is located at 13254 Teal Rdg Wy, Riverton in Mountain View Village. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters that reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Strength training also promotes better sleep, increased focus, and improved energy levels throughout the day. Over time, the discipline and structure of a consistent routine can increase self-esteem and a sense of control, helping you feel more capable both inside and outside the gym. Additionally, maintaining a regular schedule helps establish a positive habit loop. The more consistent your routine becomes, the less motivation you need to get started. Showing up becomes automatic. Whether your goal is to increase strength, enhance performance, or simply feel better day to day, persistence is key. Ultimately, sticking to a strength training routine builds more than just muscle—it strengthens your mind, enhances emotional balance, and empowers you to lead a healthier, happier life.
ARTICLE BY KEATON STEPHENS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Consistency is the foundation of progress in any fitness program, and strength training is no exception. Sticking to a regular routine is essential not only for building muscle but also for improving overall health, longevity, and quality of life. When you train consistently, your muscles adapt by becoming stronger and more efficient. These adaptations don’t happen overnight—they develop gradually through repeated effort. Skipping workouts or training sporadically interrupts this process, leading to plateaus or even loss of progress, called deconditioning. A structured routine ensures you are continually challenging your body and allowing adequate recovery time for growth. Consistent strength training supports bone density, joint stability, and metabolic health. It helps reduce the risk of injury by strengthening connective tissues and improving balance. Beyond physical results, strength training has powerful effects on mental health.

Local Artist Spotlight: Anika Ferguson “The Piano Player” Oil on Board
Anika Ferguson has always been an artist. While studying at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, she began working on a series focused on music and movement. As this idea progressed, she learned about the neurological condition synesthesia, which causes information meant to stimulate one of your senses to stimulate several of your senses. “I was surprised to learn that when hearing music,” Anika says, “others don’t always associate it with colors and textures the way I do.” “The Piano Player” is one of Anika’s many paintings that represent the colors and textures she experiences when she hears a certain type of music. To her, the music of Regina Spektor or Sarah McLachlan seems to flow from this painting, but she loves to hear what music others may see in her paintings. Now, Anika’s paintings can be seen at Flowerstone Frame & Art Studio, where she is a custom picture framer and teaches students of all ages. You can learn more about Anika’s work at FlowerstoneStudio.com/AnikaFerguson.

In November, the Salt Lake Chamber hosted its 49th Annual Women & Business Conference and ATHENA Awards Luncheon, celebrating the accomplishments of women in Utah’s business community.
“Utah has an incredible network of women supporting women, and it is a beautiful thing to witness.” The day-long event brought together professionals from across the state and included keynotes by Holly Rowe, ESPN Hall of Fame Sports Commentator, and Shannon Bahrke, two-time Olympic Medalist, founder and CEO, as well as many esteemed breakout session speakers. During the awards luncheon, the Chamber presented the ATHENA Leadership Award, which is awarded to a woman who, according to the Salt Lake Chamber, “demonstrates creativity and initiative in business, provides valuable service by devoting time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community, and assists women in reaching their full leadership potential.” This year’s recipient of the prestigious recognition was Ally Isom, who is the Chief Marketing and External Affairs Officer at Clyde Companies, Inc., a Utah construction company.
Additionally, five women received the Pathfinder Award, awarded because they create new paths to promote the development and recognition of women in business. The five awardees were: • Melanie Bowen, Community Relations Director of the Orrin G. Hatch Foundation • Jenny Groberg, CEO and Founder of BookSmarts Accounting and Bookkeeping • Lauren Gustus, CEO and Executive Editor of The Salt Lake Tribune • Sara Jones, CEO of InclusionPro • Monnica Manuel, President and Co-Founder of RSG Performance Jordan River City Lifestyle’s photographer, Jen Fox, was present at the conference and says the experience was motivating and connecting. “What stood out to me most was the powerful sense of community,” Jen says. “Utah has an incredible network of women supporting women, and it is a beautiful thing to witness.” JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .
