THE ART OF HOLIDAY DESIGN: MAKING YOUR HOME A HAVEN

LEARN HOW LOCAL CELEBRITIES CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS

Happy Holidays

The holidays are my favorite time of the year. The snow begins to fall, homes light up, and the world seems to slow down for a minute. It's just…magical. But as I think about it, I can’t seem to put my finger on exactly what it is that makes it so special. Is it the weather? The music? The nostalgia? All of these put together? This month, we want to celebrate some of the elements that make the holidays so special.

First, the holidays smell good! Everywhere you go, you smell something different, such as the woody scent of pine, the soothing scent of apple cider, or the appetizing scent of pumpkin pie. That’s why this month we’re featuring Carrie Clark and Purple Duck. The business was born from a love for beautiful scents. This Riverton grandmother is showing the world that the best smells are toxin-free smells.

Next, the holidays are a great time for family traditions. Trimming the tree, enjoying a big family meal, or watching football—all these traditions help us connect with one another. Even Utah-born celebrities have their own traditions, so this month we’ll also explore how celebrities like Brandon Flowers, Derek Hough, and Brandon Sanderson celebrate the holidays.

Finally, the holidays are a great time for food! The Grinch had his roast beast, Tiny Tim had his figgy pudding, and now we have a brand new culinary experience called The Lake Break at North Shore. Kevin and Jill Jones have assembled an allstar team of heavy hitters to bring us a dining atmosphere where unapologetically coastal charm meets Northshore living.

This holiday season, take time to enjoy the scents, the traditions, and the food that bring you joy and happiness. You deserve it!

SCENT WITHOUT STRESS

For years, Carrie Clark suffered from horrible headaches. She realized that they were more prevalent whenever she was around fragrance. As she told friends about the problem, many of them spoke up, saying they had noticed a similar issue.

The Story of Purple Duck
“It’s for people who care more for their health than just having something smell good.”

One afternoon, Carrie was making candles with a granddaughter, and she had the thought to look into what exactly was in traditional fragrances. “I started looking into the chemicals that were put in commercial brands,” Carrie says.

Manmade toxins like phthalates and parabens are often added to fragrances because they make them cheaper to produce. Carrie says that during her research, she found that prolonged exposure can bring about a whole host of problems, from infertility to cancer. And for people like Carrie, it makes them feel sick when exposed to those chemicals via fragrance. When she realized these toxins were connected to her head pain, she was shocked, and realized how important it was to use natural products. Instead of giving up completely on fragrant products, Carrie set out to reinvent them. She says she took a fragrance-making class to learn about the

entire fragrance-making process, from choosing top notes and base notes to knowing what makes a good fragrance. Then, she applied herself to learning what natural ingredients could replace typically toxic ones.

She started with candles. Now, Purple Duck carries everything from perfume and room sprays to body butter and baby shampoo. They’re even working on a line for pets, because they believe your animal deserves to smell good and be healthy too. The company’s products are made using completely clean, natural ingredients for people who want good scents without side effects.

And the best part? The clean formulas still perform like high-end fragrances. “These will rival any Dior or Gucci scent,” she says.

Carrie doesn’t scrimp when it comes to quality. She laughs, saying that a marketer once told her, “You guys are losing financially…you’re making it last

too long. You don’t have to reapply your perfume three times a day.” But Carrie sees this comment as evidence of her products’ value: although it has a slightly higher cost than the average drugstore product, it works. It really works. She says people who wear their products are always asked, “What are you wearing?”

Customers have responded in unexpected ways. Carrie’s husband, Brian, often helps out at trade shows and conferences, chatting with customers. He recalls one woman who sampled a body butter at a trade show. She told him that she’d battled eczema for years and had just never found anything that helped. “She was very apprehensive to try any of our products,” Brian says, but she kept coming back for more samples of the body butter throughout the duration of the conference.

Recently, Carrie and Brian were surprised to receive an email from the woman, who said she had been so happy with the product that she kept buying it.

“It cleared her eczema,” Carrie says, beaming. “She was so thrilled all these months later to let us know.”

It’s a testimony to Carrie’s belief that natural ingredients make all the difference.

Carrie’s niece and marketing director, Jaycee Conrad, helps translate that mission into social media content, helping educate people on what

“You guys are losing financially…you’re making it last too long. You don't have to reapply your perfume three times a day.”

makes their products different. Together, Jaycee and Carrie create new scents in their home “laboratory,” having fun as they mix different notes together, creating the perfect scent. “She’s in her 20s, I’m in my 60s, so we have a whole different kind of taste,” Carrie says. “But we can put it together, and it works.”

Purple Duck has a core scent group that’s always around, but they also have seasonal scents that change four times a year. As Purple Duck heads into the holiday season, the team is thinking festive. Their “12 Days of Christmas” box features a dozen seasonal samples, from sugar cookie to spiced chai. Their holiday scents are a great way to celebrate the season safely and healthily.

Carrie hopes that Purple Duck will continue to reach their target audience. “It’s for people who care more for their health than just having something smell good,” Carrie says, because she believes that beauty shouldn’t come at the expense of health.

The Ripple Effect of Warmth

AAI Students Connect Science with Service

For one sixth-grade class at South Jordan’s American Academy of Innovation, learning about heat transfer became an opportunity to spread real warmth in their community.

This fall, Landon Leak is teaching math, science, and language arts. His class read The Lions of Little Rock , a story about breaking down social barriers amid segregation in the 1950s. While the students learned about overcoming these barriers through human connection, they were also studying heat transfer in science.

Leak saw a parallel between the two concepts. “Trying to spread warmth and joy can also be a form of heat transfer,” he says. “We can’t scientifically prove it, but it feels pretty real.”

To help his students put that idea into action, Landon created the Ripple Effect of Warmth project. Partnering with local nonprofit The Refuge, Landon’s class upcycled two-liter plastic bottles into colorful lanterns for The Refuge’s Walk of Hope event.

Before starting the project, representatives from The Refuge visited Landon’s classroom to talk with students about

their mission to assist survivors of domestic violence. Landon says the visit helped students realize their project could make a real impact. “They're excited to have unique opportunities like this,” he says.

Each student glued colorful tissue paper inside a bottle and wrote a short note of encouragement. When displayed together at the event, the lanterns’ colorful light and heartfelt messages created a ripple effect of light and hope—much like the scientific transfer of heat.

This hands-on approach to learning reflects the American Academy of Innovation’s educational philosophy. The school’s project-based model emphasizes creativity and experiential learning over a rigid one-size-fits-all approach.

School is tough, Landon says, and so is life. That’s why he believes experiences like this one are so important for students. “If they feel like there’s hope and that they can make a difference,” Landon says, “That could change their lives.”

The Art of Holiday Design

Holiday design is about creating an atmosphere that feels warm, welcoming, and meaningful. By engaging all five senses, you can transform your home into a truly enchanting and memorable holiday haven.

Lighting is the easiest way to shift a space from everyday to magical. Mix soft candlelight with warm lamps and twinkle lights to create a glow that makes people want to linger.

Then, bring in scent. A simmer pot of cinnamon and orange or a single signature candle can set the tone before guests even take off their coats.

Think of the table as your storytelling stage and the heart of celebration. Drape it in linen like a soft winter landscape, scatter it with glowing candles, sprigs of pine or cedar, and meaningful accents that can spark conversation.

ARTICLE
PHOTOGRAPHY

Decor should be simple yet impact ful. Even wrapped gifts can become part of the design when coordinated with your color palette and styled under the tree or along the mantel. Weave in texture through luxe textiles: velvet pillows, chunky knit throws, or a rich wool rug instantly transform a room into a winter retreat.

When it comes to holiday decorating, less is often more. Thoughtfully chosen pieces speak louder than clutter. The most beautiful spaces aren’t the most styled. They’re the ones that reflect your story, your traditions, and how you love to celebrate.

So, most importantly, make your space, yours.

WHERE UNAPOLOGETICALLY COASTAL CHARM MEETS NORTHSHORE LIVING

The Lake Break at North Shore

ARTICLE BY ABI FALIN HORSPOOL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SILVIA BORJA

James "Bam" Peck
Within a day, the group knew they had found something special.

At The Lake Break at North Shore, coastal charm pairs with the relaxed rhythm of lakeside living. The bubbles flow, the beer is cold, and every detail is chosen to feel thoughtful, welcoming, and just a little elevated.

It’s a place where ladies linger on the patio with a glass of champagne, where guys catch the game upstairs with an Old Fashioned, and where families dig into lobster rolls with laughter and lake views.

THE BEGINNING:

FROM THE BREAK TO THE LAKE

The story started on a golf course. Kevin Jones, a retired Head Manager for Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, was golfing with James “Bam” Peck, owner of The Break in South Jordan, when a simple question sparked something bigger. Kevin asked Bam his thoughts on franchising.

Meanwhile, Kevin’s wife, Jill, a real estate and design professional with SLCCRIBS, was at Oquirrh Lake with her kids. She noticed a two-story building with a sunny patio overlooking the water. Jill texted Kevin right away: ”If we get this location, I’m all in.”

Kevin immediately called Bam. Jill looped in her close friend, real estate entrepreneur and Presidio owner, Jen Yeo. Jen’s husband, Darin Birschbach, joined as well. Within a day, the group knew they had found something special. A sister concept to The Break was born, one that retained the neighborhood spirit of The Break while introducing refined energy and a coastal twist.

THE FOUNDERS

Each member of the Lake Break team brings their own unique talent and expertise.

Avoiding Founder Mindset & Burnout

The holidays are here—carols on the radio, cookies in the breakroom, and tech founders pretending they’ll “totally take a week off” while secretly answering Slack messages under the dinner table. I see you.

Building a startup is tough enough during the year, but the holidays can turn the pressure dial to “extra crispy.” You’re closing the quarter, wrapping investor updates, and wondering if Santa takes equity. It’s easy to forget that you, too, need a recharge—preferably one that doesn’t involve caffeine or code commits.

Here’s my common sense advice: pause. Yes, actually pause. Step away from the laptop and spend time with family, friends, or your dog—anyone who doesn’t ask about your burn rate. Set clear boundaries for yourself. “Offline” should mean offline, not “checking email between dessert courses.”

Next, reflect instead of react. December is a great time to zoom out and celebrate the small wins: that first customer, that feature you finally shipped, or simply the fact that you’re still standing.

And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember: your company can’t thrive if its founder is running on empty. Take care of your mind like you would your favorite piece of tech—keep it updated, protected, and occasionally powered down.

Enjoy the holidays, unplug without guilt, and start the new year rested, recharged, and ready to build something even better— preferably after finishing that hot cocoa.

Lake Break is quickly becoming a place people gather to experience moments that matter. “ ”
Chef Edward "Eddie" Wright

Jill Jones, co-owner and design lead, grew up by Lake Michigan. Her coastal point of view defines the space, making it feel like summer year-round.

Kevin Jones brings calm leadership, operational know-how, and a deep understanding of community.

Jen Yeo of Presidio Real Estate brings business acumen and a sharp eye for raising the bar with hospitality.

Darin Birschbach, trained in hospi tality, focuses on creating smooth guest experiences and warm service flow.

Finally, James “Bam” Peck provided the foundation to grow on. His thriving neighborhood restaurant—the original “Break”— sparked this next chapter.

Christmas Traditions of Utah Celebrities

As the festive holiday season approaches, some wonder how their favorite stars celebrate the holidays. Let's explore how a few of these Utah icons embrace the magic of the season.

Derek Hough

For Derek Hough, Emmy-winning choreographer and dancer, Christmas is a time to reconnect with his roots, recharge, and enjoy the simple pleasures of family time away from the glare of the spotlight.

“That’s the time I kind of switch off, turn off and just chill,” he told Us Magazine. Amid the happy chaos of family celebrations, he enjoys relaxing by playing in the snow, practicing piano, or enjoying a new art kit. “I’m always painting or drawing,” he says.

Brandon Flowers

Brandon Flowers, the iconic frontman of The Killers, fondly remembers several family traditions from his early years in Las Vegas. His family would start the day by having breakfast at the Nevada Palace on Boulder Highway. Then they’d head to Mt. Charleston to find some snow and go inner tubing.

Flowers’ longest holiday tradition might be his band’s annual Christmas single, a ritual started in 2006, when U2’s frontman Bono asked him to contribute to his charity. Between 2006 and 2016, the band released 11 Christmas songs and raised over one million dollars to fight against AIDS.

Brandon Sanderson

For Brandon Sanderson, prolific and internationally acclaimed fantasy author, the spirit of giving is integral to the holiday season. For many years, Sanderson has held an auction where people can bid for the right to name a character in one of his upcoming novels. Proceeds support his community’s food bank through the winter season.

Since 2015, the Sanderson family has run the Lightweaver Foundation, which releases limited-edition Christmas ornaments inspired by Sanderson’s Cosmere universe. Proceeds fund charities like the Primary Children’s Hospital.

Love Living Longer. Protect Your MuscLe

As a surgeon and wellness advocate, I’ve seen firsthand how vital it is to maintain our muscles and joints as we age.

After a life changing knee injury early in medical school, I learned the value of proper weight management and exercise—lessons I carry with me every day. I am grateful for a healthy body that allows me to work out and stay active.

Did you know we lose about 1% of muscle mass each year after age 30? Even more concerning, studies show that people focusing solely on weight loss can lose up to 25% of their muscle mass in the first few months of dieting. This decline not only weakens us but increases the risk of falls, joint issues, and chronic pain, undermining overall vitality. Focusing on preserving and building muscle through strength training is essential for reversing or slowing this decline. It supports longevity, enhances joint stability, and helps maintain independence longer. Protecting your muscles and joints has clear benefits, including:

Pros

• Keeps your metabolism active and efficient

• Maintains strength and mobility

• Supports joint stability and reduces pain

• Helps you stay independent longer

• Improves overall quality of life
