The New Year symbolizes new beginnings. It also is a time where many of us aim to make different goals for health and wellness. In James Clear’s book Atomic Habits he suggests that our focus should be on our systems rather than our goals. Goals can set the direction that we want to take, but the systems we set are what bring progress. Habits are the compounded interest of self-improvement, and if we focus on getting 1 percent better everyday then that would account for a lot in the long run. This concept became very real to me over the past year as I set my goal and daily habits for health and remission. I have always prided myself on being incredibly healthy, so it came as a great surprise to me a year and a half ago when I was told that I had an autoimmune disease. This particular autoimmune condition can sometimes attack the eyes too, and that was what was happening in my circumstance. Losing my vision was not an option for me, so I decided I would do whatever it took to stop the progression of this condition and fight back. Let me tell you—it wasn’t easy. I needed drastic changes to help my body heal. After much research, I found a board certified physician who specializes in autoimmune conditions and also heavily concentrates on lifestyle and diet changes needed to help our bodies heal alongside traditional treatments. She bridged the gap between traditional medicine and nutritional and lifestyle changes that best promotes cellular repair. Following her very specific guidelines, I made immediate and very drastic changes to my diet, sleep habits, stress levels, exercise and allowed myself time for recreation—all of which were equally important to my healing. My endocrinologist (and ophthalmologist) allowed me to try this natural approach while closely monitoring my labs, and the results were astounding. Without medications I achieved full remission of my autoimmune condition and also stopped the attack on my eyes in just 7 months time. The determination and sacrifice that it took to choose this way of life every single day in order to heal has taught me that we are stronger than we think we are, and if we set our mind to do something, we can achieve it. Although health issues are not something I would wish on anyone, strangely the beauty of the journey was something I will cherish. The people that come alongside in support, my faith and the inner strength that we come to know about ourselves at a different level was a beautiful experience. If you are currently going through a difficult journey whether it is health related or not, I want to encourage you that you are stronger than your circumstance. Look for the light and love that surrounds you on your path, and if you are able to set habits that help you improve 1 percent every day, I promise you that you won’t regret it. Speak life over your situation. Your mindset and you words have power. I wish you all peace, love and health in this New Year. ANGEL A BROOCKERD, EDITOR @JOHNSONCOUNT YCIT Y LIFEST Y LE

The Splendor of Lavender Local Family-Owned Organic Farm Grows and Shares the Lavender Love ARTICLE BY LISA MOYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

The allure of all things lavender has proven to be a potent pull for Joe and Christina Blincoe, owners of Sweet Streams Lavender Co. in Bucyrus, Kansas. It began with a sweet moment when they were married in Maui, where the couple was first introduced to lavender. The scented memory stayed with them, and they later cultivated their love of lavender by planting it into the heart of the Midwest. “We dreamed of recreating the serenity of lavender fields and the feeling of peacefulness we first experienced with lavender and sharing that with others,” Christina says. “It hasn’t been easy growing in the Midwest. We’ve lost many plants due to harsh winters and the extreme heat of summers, but we’ve stayed patient and have trusted over time that this dedication would benefit others.” It’s been a faith walk since that first day in 2015 when they bought their home and acreage to grow and sell sustainable, organic lavender. “We want to leave the land better than we found it,” Christina says. They soon branched out and started growing herbs and other flowers and added luxury lavender home and spa items, committing to clean, chemical-free products handcrafted and manufactured at the farm. “The joy and love that Joe and I have for building this business from nothing is so rewarding, and we take our customers along on that journey,” Christina says. Sweet Streams now offers cut lavender, subscription boxes, spa products, jewelry, and culinary lavender, including teas and syrups. (Try lemon
lavender cookies or add lavender to savory fall dishes.) A big seller is their soy candles that come in 10 original scents they created, including their latest, Seaside Lavender. All Sweet Streams Lavender Co. products are registered and trademarked. Along with its online boutique, Sweet Streams partners with local chefs, artisans, fitness studios, and boutiques and avoids big chains to ensure products are made small batch, for a consistent, clean product. Known for its medicinal and health properties, lavender is used as a natural remedy to treat anxiety/depression, insomnia, skin blemishes, minor burns, bug bites, pain and inflammation. The Blincoes recently purchased a 1953 Ford antique flower truck available to rent for wedding photos, showers or appreciation events. They also offer the “Truck with Flowers.” “We will bring the truck full of flower stems,” Christina says. “Each guest can build and take home a beautiful bouquet for wonderful memories. Or book a pop-up event, and we’ll bring the truck filled with lavender products for a mobile shopping experience.” Private farm tours are also available by appointment only and can be scheduled online, with lavender’s peak blooming season occurring during June-July. To make their products more accessible locally, the Blincoes joined the Overland Park Farmers Market full-time this year so customers can purchase products and save on shipping. Customers can visit them every Wednesday and

“Each guest can build and take home a beautiful bouquet for wonderful memories. Or book a pop-up event, and we’ll bring the truck filled with lavender products for a mobile shopping experience.” Saturday from 7:30 a.m.–1 p.m. from April–December. “The local community has been supportive of our business since we first opened. We believe in the power of business collaborations and supporting each other for success.” Christina adds that successful business is not just about selling products but about people. “We try to just be good
humans. When you do this, regardless of the money you make, you will find success in life. As business owners and farmers, we’ve learned so much over the past seven years about what it takes to be an entrepreneur. We tell folks all the time, if you have a dream, follow it! It will take hard work, but it’s worth it.”

New Year’s resolutions will continue to weigh heavy on people trying to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes in everyday routines, but a Leawood health food restaurant is making it easier for people to stay on track by serving up a health-conscious menu made with some of the best organic ingredients available. Staci Cross is the proud owner of Enjoy Pure Food + Drink and while her restaurant is known to serve healthy food and help people achieve personal health goals, her mission is to educate people on the positive impacts healthy eating can have and making it easy to sustain that mentality. “What I was trying to achieve was a large variety of plant based healthy food. I was running around the country, and saw I could get a cold press juice or a bad smoothie with yogurt and orange juice anywhere, and realized we need more healthy food options than just a salad or a plate of hummus,” said Cross. Enjoy Pure Food + Drink currently offers a variety of menu options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner all made with select organic ingredients, which Cross says are carefully sourced to ensure customers are eating nutritionally-dense food with every bite. “I am so particular with every ingredient that walks through the door,” said Cross, “most of our customers in the health community know this, so they count on us and trust us.” Some of the restaurant’s best selling-items are their warm bowls like their ‘Take On the World’ which is packed with red and white quinoa, an array of vegetables like kale, broccoli and beets, healthy fats such as almonds, hemp seeds, avocado, and showered with a tasty ginger-miso dressing. The bowl is gluten free, vegan and organic. It’s actually their #1 seller. “I think that’s why people feel good when they come here because we are so intentional about serving from the heart, and to really lift people up because it goes with the healthy food,” said Cross. Cross says her cold-press juices also rank high in popularity, because each juice is crafted to meet specific nutritional needs, and can help customers CONTINUED >

recover after a long workout or during a cleanse. There are seven varieties of ‘Enjoy’ juices on the menu and each has a shelf life of three to four days to ensure enzyme benefits are at its peak upon purchase. “People worldwide drink cold-pressed juice because of the live enzymes that transport all the nutrients throughout your body. Enzymes are so important. It’s a primary reason why people drink cold pressed juice instead of juice you buy off the grocery store shelf. It’s not only because they’re drinking healthy vegetables and fruits. It’s because of the live enzymes,” explained Cross. Drinking without the guilt is another option at Enjoy Pure Food + Drink. Alcoholic drinks and craft cocktails are notoriously known for their high calorie intake and added sugars that can often lead to weight gain. However, Pura cocktails bring to the table a clean cocktail experience. Cross boasts there are no refined sugar, syrups, artificial flavors or dyes in her cocktails which are mainly a blend of fresh-pressed juices, home-made infusions and fresh ingredients. Their craft cocktail varies from a healthy take on a classic margarita, to a seasonal bourbon mixed drink and a variety of organic wines and spirits. “We know that our customers like a cocktail, or like a glass of wine with their meal, and we just want it to be as healthy as the food that they’re eating,” said Cross. As for what’s next Cross says she’s focused on potentially expanding her businesses and continuing to bring healthy food options to as many people as possible. One thing is for sure, she continues to focus in on the Midwest; an area she says is craving for healthy food options. “We serve about three to four hundred people a day. It’s not just a niche,” said Cross. “I think that Kansas City was definitely hurting, starving for more healthy food options, and when we expand, we want to go where people need us.”

On Instagram, Julie Burton’s bio reads in part, ‘Mom, Writer. Bacon-hater-please don’t drop me as a friend.” While her distaste for salt-cured pork may raise eyebrows, this KC native has managed to bring a new type of sizzle across popular social media platforms. “There’s a lot of people that use social media and show the best parts. Some people just show Easter and Christmas pictures of their kids looking perfect,” said Barton, “It’s a natural thing, you want to show off your life and you don’t want to really talk about the real stuff.” Shockingly, @ksujulie profile isn’t flooded with pictures of her posing next to trendy cocktail bars or pictures of her latest vacation spot. Instead the single mom of two uploads witty remarks or summarizes comical thoughts she came across while balancing her everyday life. Some of her most popular posts are of her unfiltered and walking her followers through her latest OBGYN visit, take on popular movies, or her first mammogram experience. “I think the more real I am, the more people can relate —it’s vulnerable. I am putting myself in front of my mom and old teachers. You’re really getting into my life but people like that,” said Burton “it’s just the voice in my head honestly, I’m a very shy person, in real life. I’m soft spoken, and when I write it’s just everything that I think in my head.” The KC native’s inner-voice seems to work. She’s won several People’s Choice awards for her entertaining use of social media while building an audience of more than 120,000 people. Each of her posts generate hundreds of comments which are mostly accompanied by a laughing emoji. “People call me an influencer, but I don’t like that name. I don’t try to sell anything, I don’t go
and get cute pictures because it’s all about the words,” stressed Burton. As a writer, Burton says she’s influenced by her daily routine and love for all things Kansas City. At times, she uses her platform to answer questions outsiders may have about Kansas City, battle misconceptions, or stress to people (surprisingly enough) that Kansas Citians do more than watch the ‘Wizard of Oz’ on repeat. “We have everything. We don’t have mountains or beaches, but that’s what makes it even better,” explained Burton. “We have everything a major city does, and people often think that this is just a cow town or a suburban town. We’re just much bigger than that.” The World Cup and NFL Draft are set to bring Kansas City under a global spotlight, but some argue Burton has been helping shine a light on the City of Fountains for years. Some of her followers will reach out to get her perspective on what family-friendly activities they can do while visiting KC, popular food destinations, or where they snap the best pictures. “I think Kansas City loves Kansas City, and I’m just a part of that story,” explained Burton. “I just happened to have a lot of followers where I can amplify that, and I’m always trying to share things about it. It’s one of the best places to grow up and live in.” As for what’s next, Burton said she’s committed to her social media presence and did have the following piece of advice for people wanting to break the cycle and start an online platform. “Be authentic when you’re online because I know it can be hard for people to look at your highlights and see what’s good, and that’s not necessarily all true. I just feel like, if you’re authentic online, it kind of helps everyone else around,” said Burton.

THE BENEFITS OF PLANT BASED EATING ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN AYOADE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A Plant-based diet still allows to you consume the Carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. You do not have to give up meat entirely and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a f lexitarian which mean you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have
some f lexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meats but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a Vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats is said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!
TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY: 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether and it will be harder stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plants foods you already like. 2. Plant based diet does not mean boring! You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to you vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. CONTINUED >

3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possible an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low b12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin b12. 6. A meat free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits than can add years to your life. On the Bookshelf ARTICLE BY JANINE KLUCKHOH N
A new year is often a time of reflection and goal setting, and as an avid reader I always include a yearly reading goal. Lucky for us, 2023 promises to be another fantastic year for literature! It was hard to narrow down this list to just four books so if you would like to see more recommendations throughout the year, visit my Instagram page @downtogetthefictionon where I share what I’m reading or books I’m excited to read. When I started my page in May 2018, I never thought dedicating time and energy into reading would be such a life changing journey so I hope this year you find a book or hobby that makes you learn and brings new experiences or opportunities!

Young Adult
HIGHLY SUSCIPIOUS AND UNFAIRLY CUTE by Talia Hibbert (on sale January 3, 2023) Celine is a bright, hardworking, high schooler with a love for conspiracy theories and big goals to become a high-powered attorney. Bradley is the popular jock and also happens to be Celine’s ex-best friend who he ditched once his star began to rise. When life throws them into the same survival challenge there’s more than just their reputations and bragging rights on the line - there’s also a full-ride university scholarship! Will they continue to sling mud at one another or will time in the wilderness start to repair their once-close friendship?
Witty, smart and full of important topics, this YA book is one to add to your 2023 reading lists.
Romance
ROMANTIC COMEDY by Curtis Sittenfield (on sale April 11, 2023) Sally is a writer for the popular late-night sketch show “The Night Owls.” While Sally is happy at her dream job at TNO, her male co-workers have also found love with guest celebs widely out of their league. Always looking for the laugh, Sally writes a sketch mocking this phenomenon when Noah, a successful singer, is the host and musical guest for TNO. While Sally finds Noah’s music cheesy, throughout the week she starts to see a different side of him that makes her question her earlier impression and wonder if maybe this uber-famous heartthrob could be interested in a sweats-wearing tv writer but that’s not how this phenom works! Set between 2018-2023, the story takes you from behind the scenes at TNO to Sally’s time back in Kansas City with her stepdad during 2020 and beyond.
Kansas Citians will love the nods to our city and will be charmed by both Sally and Noah.

Literary Crime Fiction
AGE OF VICE Deepti Kapoor (on sale January 3, 2023 Set in India, this is a weaving tale of loyalty, family, crime and injustice. Ajay is a diligent and hardworking servant to Sunny, the heir to a well known crime family. Ajay has worked his way up the ranks by keeping quiet and following orders but when Neda, a curious journalist, becomes involved with Sunny life begins to get even more dangerous as the stakes become higher. Greed, revenge and the struggle for power make this genre bending book a wildly unique and engaging page turner.
If you love crime fiction and enjoy when a book takes you to another place and time, then I think you will love this book.
