Letter from the Editor
November 2023 PUBLISHER
Wade Kotarba | wade.kotarba@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Angela Broockerd | angela.broockerd@citylifestyle.com
As we approach this coming season of giving and acknowledging all that we are thankful for, my hope is that we are inspired to spread love to others out of an abundance of what we feel blessed with in our own lives. It feels so good to give freely to others, whether it is the gift of time, meeting a financial need or the gift of service. When we sacrificially give, it is just as rewarding as it is to the receiver. There are many things I love about working for this magazine, but my favorite thing that I look forward to all year is our annual Giving Campaign. A few years ago, the owners of our company, Steven Schowengerdt and Matthew Perry, wanted to find a way to tangibly help people who may need financial help due to a tragedy, or who have fallen upon unexpected hard times, or who are struggling to make ends meet but who also fall between the cracks of getting help. They decided that the best way to find those hidden needs would be to ask you, our readers, for help in identifying them. Every year, hundreds of nominations flood in from the community and beyond, and the needs are enormous, severe and heartbreaking. It is overwhelming to read through the tragedies and tremendous needs, but it is such a privilege to get to be a part of an opportunity to provide some help in someone’s great time of need. Nominations remain anonymous, and the recipients are simply mailed a Christmas card explaining that someone wanted to bless them this season, and a check is enclosed. The amount given varies based on the need. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 in total to 116 families and individuals, and we need your help with nominations again this year. The recipients do not have to live in our community. Nominations will open up on November 27th and will be open until December 10th. You can visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram and click the Giving Campaign link to nominate someone during those dates, or look for the full article in our December issue with details on how to nominate. The identities of nominators and recipients will remain private. This project is so special to me. It allows all of us to be a part of something bigger than ourselves—to be part of taking care of one another, as we should. I hope you all have a Thanksgiving filled with love and blessings.

Top 5 Things to Know about Medical Weight Management Tirzepatide Modulates Fat Utilization
Who Can Qualify Anyone who is seeking a more personalized approach to weight management is a good candidate for embarking on a journey towards optimal wellbeing. If a person has that stubborn 10 pounds put on during COVID, is doing everything right with diet and exercise, yet can’t shed those extra pounds, they may well qualify for a weight management program. Those who have higher weight loss goals may also benefit from a personalized solution to assist in their wellness journey.
Semaglutide Regulates Appetite This medication has been used for over 15 years to treat diabetes, but then it had an amazing side effect: weight loss. Semaglutide works by mimicking the hormone in the body that regulates blood sugar levels and appetite. This means that when Semaglutide is taken, it can help reduce feelings of hunger, leading to less food intake and weight loss. It has been shown to be particularly helpful for those who have struggled with losing weight through other methods.
Another innovative medical option is Tirzepatide, which activates 2 receptors through hormone stimulation. This not only offers the benefit of suppressing one’s appetite, it regulates glucose and blood sugar levels. Tirzepatide can also assist with modifying how the body utilizes fat by increasing energy expenditure.
Average Amount of Weight Loss Each person is different and loses weight at varying rates. Clinical trials have shown participants to lose from 5% up to 20% of their baseline body weight.
Benefits of Medical Weight Management When managed right, with an experienced medical team that adjusts dosage specific to you, benefits may include: • Loss of weight • Increased energy • Enhanced sleep • Improved blood pressure • Better self-confidence • Less joint pain

With 24 years of history, the Luminary Walk continues to shine brightly, embodying wonder, charm, and the magic of tradition. The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, illuminated with miles of electric lights and holiday spirit, welcomes guests every winter to kick off their holiday season. This festive walk through the gardens serves as a beloved and longstanding tradition for the community. The Luminary Walk is one of seven key fundraising events for Friends of the Arboretum, a division of The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park, and they are grateful for the community support.
“The Luminary Walk is the highest attended and biggest impacting fundraiser of the year for FOTA! This year, we are excited to offer three special experiences to choose from: Luminary Walk, two Adults-Only Candlelight Stroll nights and Electric Glow weeknights.,” noted Brit Waye, Community Engagement Manager. The gardens are bright with color while the walkways through quiet woods are lit with candles. Trees, buildings, and bridges are all part of the show, with thousands of lights aglow. Cafe Celeste will be open in LongHouse selling hot beverages and snacks, as well as adult beverages. The Adults-Only Candlelight Stroll is for those looking for a quieter experience that still features the glow of candles through the woods, dazzling light displays, live musical performances and
enchanting gnome houses, all without children. Wine and hot adult beverages will be available for purchase. Interested in a less crowded experience? Electric Glow is a low-key version of the Luminary Walk where only the electric lights are on, and attendance is much more limited, making them ideal for wandering through the lighted gardens and studying the intricate gnome and fairy houses. Tickets can be purchased online at opabg.org for select nights from November 24 - December 20.

THANKFUL FOR THE RIDE KATHLEEN RAMSEY SHIFTS CAREER FROM NURSING TO DESIGN
ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT KOCOUREK

T R E N D SE T T E R | HOM E + DE S I GN
In the world of interior design, the ability to blend style, comfort, and personal expression seamlessly is an art. Kathleen Ramsey, Allied Member ASID and owner of Ramsey Interiors is a remarkable artist in this realm, transforming living spaces into sanctuaries that reflect the unique essence of her clients. “I have my bachelor’s in nursing and have been working as a Registered Nurse for 20 years,” says Ramsey. “I had always enjoyed decorating my home—my husband called our house “the lab”. At 40, I decided to go back to school and take some interior design classes at JCCC to see if I liked it and was any good. I ended up completing my associate degree in interior design. My background as a nurse has been a huge advantage in terms of organization, people skills and focusing on aging in place.”
Ramsey’s approach to interior design is deeply rooted in personalization. She believes that understanding her clients’ tastes and preferences is the key to creating spaces that truly resonate with them. To achieve this, she encourages her clients to gather images from magazines and online sources that inspire them or convey their vision. This initial step helps clients think critically about how they want to feel in their home. During consultations, Ramsey reviews these images with her clients, pinpointing style and color themes that may not be immediately apparent. She delves into discussions about colors and patterns that resonate with them, taking into consideration the practicality of their choices and the intended use of the space. Her design process is a meticulous journey, considering factors such as the number of people using the space and any cherished furniture pieces her clients wish to retain. Focal points are given special attention, as they contribute to creating what Ramsey calls those “TA-DA” moments every room deserves. CONTINUED >

Inspiration often springs from a single fabric or rug that encapsulates the desired color palette and ambiance. This chosen element becomes the cornerstone of the design, guiding the selection of fabrics and furniture styles to form a cohesive whole. Her education in design principles and elements ensures that every piece plays its part in creating a harmonious flow, where no single element overshadows the others. One of the remarkable aspects of Ramsey’s portfolio is her versatility. She specializes in high-rise, high-end apartments for clients looking to downsize, but her talent extends to crafting stunning interiors for homes as well. Her favorite type of design work is collaborating with clients from the blueprint stage where she can create spaces that truly speak to them. “I don’t have a particular “style” or look. Working with people to create something that speaks to them, and

their lives inspires me the most. Some of my favorite clients have been people who have achieved some success in their careers but have not created a home that provides them sanctuary to recharge. It can be life changing for people. My tagline is “creating interiors that re-energize, inspire and comfort”. That is as true today as it was 20 years ago when I created my company.” When asked about her favorite spaces to design, Ramsey expresses her appreciation for bedrooms. Often overlooked, bedrooms are spaces of comfort, sanctuary, and renewal. She enjoys the challenge of creating bedrooms that embody these qualities, ensuring her clients wake up to a space that truly rejuvenates them. Close behind are spaces where families and friends gather—the heart of the home. Kitchens, family rooms, and dining areas provide her with opportunities to design spaces that foster connection and shared memories.
Ramsey is currently working on a Plaza condo for a retired couple with a love for art wanting a space to showcase their contemporary collection. Ramsey’s design approach keeps the furniture understated to let the artwork shine while providing an energetic atmosphere. The second project is a midtown condo, which brings the charm of “Palm Springs mid-century modern” to life. The couple, known for their love of entertaining and quirky art collections, sought a space that reflects their unique style and invites lively gatherings. Ramsey’s natural ability to infuse spaces with style is the hallmark of her talent, ensuring that every project bears the unique stamp of the people who call it home. “Although I don’t have a particular style, my natural tendency is toward adding color and signature items that reflect the client and their unique qualities. Whether you gravitate to “traditional” or “today”, I can help you add the color, texture, and style to reflect your personality.” For more information, visit ramseyinteriors.com.

Welcome to the Booth Creek Ranch! Located north of Manhattan, Kansas, this ranch was originally developed in 2008 for worldclass whitetail deer hunting. It features deep, wooded creek draws, surrounded by rolling hills of lush tallgrass prairie, making it the perfect place to raise this special herd of Wagyu cattle. “The business began in 2020 when our founder and CEO, Dave Dreiling, attended his first Wagyu auction. He bought four
full-blood Wagyu and 28 Wagyu Embryos from his uncle’s dispersal sale. Booth Creek Wagyu became the basis for a vertically integrated beef production operation, from the genetics and ranch operation all the way to processing, sales and distribution, Andy Groneman, Director of Marketing, explained. “This would assure quality control through the entire process and allow us to keep everything local. Our ranch, processing facility and distribution
center are all located within 20 miles of each other, so we have traceability through every aspect of the process. That allows unparalleled quality control. It’s all about the marbling, which contributes to a rich buttery taste and the beef’s tenderness. Wagyu beef is higher in Omega 3s and 6s than salmon and is lower in cholesterol than chicken. So not only does the marbling create an amazing product it also has great health benefits!” CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/J OH N S O N C O UN T Y

Online sales and the Manhattan store began in 2021. A new retail store recently opened a few weeks ago over the summer in Overland Park. They are a vertically integrated producer and own the genetics, animals, ranch, feeding, processing and retail operations which allows for quality control. “We know where every cut of meat comes from, and the quality grade on every steak. Booth Creek Wagyu sells beef cuts at the Gold, Platinum, and Reserve levels, with the higher levels featuring higher amounts of marbling,” Dave explained. “USDA Prime beef is 8-12% IMF (Intramuscular Fat), while a Platinum full-blood Wagyu is 26% IMF or more. Wagyu beef is higher in Omega 3s and 6s than salmon and is lower in cholesterol than chicken. So not only does the marbling create an amazing product it also has great health benefits!” Wagyu cattle carry an enzyme called delta-9 desaturase, which converts unhealthy saturated fat into unsaturated fat and heart-healthy amino acids. This is why, as previously
stated, Wagyu beef is loaded with Omega-3s and features one of the lowest cholesterol levels of any meat, including chicken and fish.” This is the ideal holiday gift, as they can ship gift boxes anywhere in the lower 48 states in the Continental United States. They offer a variety of gift packages ranging from $60-$500 and can custom-build packages for any corporate gifting needs as well. Their website offers recipes, cooking tips, history and more. “We can help you in-store or on our website at booth creekwagyu.com/gifting,” Andy confirmed. “We have over 20 curated gift options you can choose from. We want you to experience how amazing the beef is, so we sample freshly seared Wagyu seven days a week in-store. Visit our amazing Overland Park team to taste the difference and ‘Elevate your Beef!’” The new retail store is located at 13412 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. Gather
Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

ad i t i o n al Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display. CONTINUED >

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.
