An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. We can all probably think of a man that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the influence these men have made on us. I can say without question that my father is my biggest role model and whom I constantly strive to emulate. He is a man of high character and is the most humble and selfless person I know. He listens to understand and doesn’t always have to be understood and is a natural peacemaker. His giving nature spills into every aspect of his life, and he never hesitates to give financially, with his talents and with his time. His is sensible, patient, even-tempered, wise, quick-witted, incredibly capable and hard working. He instilled the importance of having a strong work ethic and that I can accomplish anything that I am willing to work hard for. The love and adoration that he has for my mother after 51 years of marriage is the biggest blessing to our family and an incredible example to all of us. He makes it a point to create a special relationship with every one of his 10 children, their spouses and all 39 grandchildren. He perfectly embodies both strength and gentleness and has taught me many lessons in life. Among those is to always be humble and build others up instead of ourselves and that our character is revealed by the way we live and serve others instead of trying to build a name for ourselves. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you.

DeJuan Bonds discovered his passion for cutting hair at the young age of 14. The craft, which he’s been doing for 26 years and calls an expression of art, never ceases to bring him daily joy. “I really like taking the head canvas and trying to give you the look that you desire,” Bonds said. Bonds is the owner of The Purple Label Barbershop in Olathe. He calls his business an old-school barbershop with a new-school flare. He provides all the old-school services that some barbershops have stopped doing such as hot towel shaves and razor shaves. Bonds said he works hard to make sure any customer that walks into his business leaves feeling confident and accepted. “I love the challenge of making sure that I can change and make someone happy with the hair cut or style,” Bonds said. Growing up in a house with four kids, there wasn’t always money for frequent haircuts, which inspired Bonds to pick up his mom’s clippers and cut his brother’s hair. He admits that the first cut didn’t go very well, but he soon became determined to get better. “I was like okay I want to try it again, so I just kept playing with it, and thank God for my aunt that had a couple of boys. She didn’t care, she was like just cut their hair so they were my practice heads,” Bonds said. He became known for his hair cutting skills as he got older and would soon make his dreams of owning a barbershop a reality. Purple Label is a spin-off of Bonds’ original barbershop opened in 1997 called Napps. It was located on the west side of Olathe, which had many members of the African-American and Hispanic communities. Having a diverse clientele was important to him when he moved to his current location at 11934 West 119th Street and re-named the business Purple Label. CONTINUED >

“I wanted to service everyone, it didn’t matter to me because I knew I had the skill set to cut any type of head that came in,” Bonds said. Bonds has become known for cutting hair for many of the Kansas City Chiefs players, including Patrick Mahomes. He first began cutting hair for former Chiefs player Tony Richardson who Bonds would later develop a friendship with. He then started cutting hair for Bam Morris and would later become the barber for many other notable players such as Tony Gonzalez, Larry Johnson and Travis Kelce. Bonds has traveled with the team to training camp and other events and even flew out to cut Patrick Mahomes’ hair before his wedding and before Super Bowl 2020. While being the barber for notable Kansas City Chiefs players is a plus, Bonds said the bread and butter of his business is cutting hair for members of the community from all circles. “I’m not just the barber to these guys, I’m the barber for everybody,” Bonds said. “I don’t want you to feel like you have to be a certain person or certain type to come to Purple Label.” Bonds said his clients range in age from one to 100. He recently opened The MOL, which stands for the Members Only Lounge. The business is a members lounge for Purple Label clientele to socialize and network with other businessmen. Bonds said the business is a great place for members to get some work done while also having access to private lockers to keep liquor in for happy hour or evening cocktails. The MOL is also available as a small event space. No matter what business he’s running, Bonds said nothing brings him more joy than being a part of the community and meeting different types of people.

Do you ever wish you could try out the van life without having to do the renovating and refurbishment? Well let me tell you something, you can! Husband and wife duo, Spencer and Sarah Martin, had a dream to take trips in a refurbished van so they could see lots of the places with having the flexibility of their own schedule and housing being taken care of every time they arrived.

With every van or trailer you rent, you can choose from many options on their website, from teardrop trailers to an entire van, you can find the perfect combination and set up for your group. With the renovations taking place in Kansas City by Vandoit and Campinawe, you are not only living your dream van life, you are supporting local businesses as well. What began in 2020 as a small business has grown, and now they are booking up and helping others enjoy the VanLife without the hassle. You may be thinking that Vanlife is only for summer, but they have a lot of interest in the fall and winter as well! Want to escape the hustle and bustle, rent a camper and take a trip to Colorado? You may be wondering, “ I have no camping experience. Where would I even start?” Well, Spencer has already thought of that, and in the next couple of weeks, they will be posting a blog series on their websites of great places to camp, what to see and how to book. Exhale and let an experienced person do the work for you, so you don’t have to figure out how to make your dream vacation come true logistically. The first series will start with destinations within 2 hours of Kansas City and continue to grow from there, so stay tuned. For the experienced camper, you can bring whatever gear you own, so you can feel more at home. If you don’t have something, they do, and you can request it when you book with them. Lawn to Table ARTICLE BY BRAD ZOLLARS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
It’s a beautiful spring morning as I take a seat at a small table within the airy interior of the Lenexa Public Market. Matt Moore, owner of Martin City Brewing Company, sits across from me, having rushed over from the site of his newest pizza/taproom concept, a 6,000 square foot space set to open within Lenexa City Center. Its launch will mark the sixth Martin City Brewing Company location within the area. For a business that’s barely ten years old and has survived an industry shaking pandemic, it’s an extraordinarily impressive feat.

“I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Probably because I wasn’t good at taking orders,” he laughs. “I never expected any of this.” So how did this burgeoning franchise get its start? Back in 2011, Moore was focused on cutting grass, not pizza – running a landscaping business he founded and operated out of his home. But food and beer were never far from his mind. Moore had grown up in the restaurant industry. His family owns the Martin City staple, Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse, where Moore worked from age ten until he headed off to study accounting

at UMKC. And beer had always been a passion project. He’d been homebrewing for years with his friend and future business partner, Chance Adams. At the time, Moore had recently purchased a vacant building in Martin City, intended to serve as the storage facility and office for his landscaping business. But shortly after taking possession, Moore and Adams had an idea: why not turn their passion project into a business plan? And on June 3rd, 2011, the first Martin City Brewing Company – launched as a brewpub – opened its doors at 500 East 135th Street. Less than three years later, Martin City Pizza and Taproom opened right next door. The new location featured an on-site microbrewery, which allowed the introduction of Martin City’s initial line of beers, including their flagship brew, the Belgian Blonde. As for food, Martin City Brewing Company is known for their Neapolitan pizzas. And for good reason: they are pure pleasure on a plate. But don’t sleep on the rest of the menu. “We had insane foodies in that kitchen from day one,” notes Moore. “They were pretty much given wild abandon to do whatever they could to make the food memorable. We spent a lot of time on the pizza and I’m very proud of it and how it has developed.” In 2021, the original Martin City location, now re-branded as Coast to Coast Pub, brought in Chef Dan Uche, who spent 25 years at Bristol. Uche has turned the former brew pub into a sneaky spot for some top-level seafood. Be sure to stop in to sample the Rappahannock oysters, flown in fresh from Virginia. The tuna tartare and fried catfish are also standouts. Looking to get in a little lake time? About 35 miles southeast of downtown Kansas City, nestled between Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit, sits Lake Lotawana. This burgeoning town is becoming quite the hot spot for a weekend getaway. It’s also the setting for Station 7, Martin City Brewing Company’s newest pizza and taproom concept. Situated just off Highway 7 at the former site of a gas station (thus
“We opened our first Love, Coffee location in Lee’s Summit about four years ago and started roasting about six months ago.” the name), Station 7 includes a sprawling, dog-friendly, outdoor patio complete with yard games and live music. Early birds will enjoy Love, Coffee, which serves up morning treats like breakfast burritos and cinnamon rolls along with a hot cup of joe. Moore, who has four children, all under the age of 11, notes that his foray into coffee is directly tied to his lack of sleep. “We opened our first Love, Coffee location in Lee’s Summit about four years ago and started roasting about six months ago. With a bunch of restaurants and small children to wrangle, I found myself drinking less beer and more coffee, so it became an interest,” he chuckles. More of a night owl than an early riser? Station 7 is open late (10pm Sun-Thurs, 11pm Fri-Sat), for those looking for a bite before bed. So, beyond delicious food and beer, what’s the secret behind Martin City Brewing Company’s steady expansion? For Matt Moore, it starts with attitude. “What we preach is to really care about our customers, make that human connection. The message to my kids and my staff is just to be better today than you were yesterday. Whatever happened yesterday, learn from that.” If you’re looking for a cold beer, a great meal, friendly staff, and owners that truly care about the community they serve, look no further. Attitude Trumps Everything
ARTICLE BY JESSICA GRACE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Tom Shaw is not merely a real estate agent. He is a man with a mission for you to live and see all that this life can be no matter the adversity you have walked through. He speaks from a place of hope and healing, even though he has had his fair share of trauma and adversity. In 1985, when Tom was 16 years old, a known sleepwalker, he slept walked out of his girlfriend’s house, got into his car, and drove two miles before crashing the car into a ditch where he awoke upon impact. With his legs stuck under the breaks, he was in for a life change. When he was at the hospital he realized that he had become paralyzed from the waist down in his lower back (L2 and L3) with the L2 completely exploding. Two major surgeries later where they put rods in his back and then had to readjust after they came out of place, he was paralyzed but healing. A year after the accident, he got connected with KU Med doctor, Dr. Marc Asher. In November of 1986, after many surgeries at KU med, he was done with back surgeries. However, one of the lasting effects of the accident is spinal stenosis (arthritis in the back). To this day he is paralyzed from the knee down on his right leg but has full movement in his left even though he has minimal feeling in the left leg. A part of his journey includes being put on opioids for pain management. From 1986 - to 2018 he was on opioids, so this length of time created in his body a medical and chemical addiction to those opioids. One evening in 2018, as he was talking with his wife, he said he wasn’t able to relieve himself and felt extremely uncomfortable in a host of other ways. His wife, who is a nurse, looked at him and said it was because of the opioids he had been on for so long. This led them both to seek a team of doctors and medical professionals to create a plan for him to wean off of them, and through the long process he became free of his addiction in 2018. CONTINUED >

This story of incredible strength and determination to overcome his situation would have felt impossible without a support system. “Four things made up my recovery: faith, family, friends, but the most important was my mindset.” He would not have been able to make it through without his faith. “I prayed every second I could.” His family was incredibly supportive alongside his friends, but he credits his mindset for how he came through it with a positive attitude and outlook on life. From an early age, his parents introduced him to the idea of positive thinking. His friends knew Zig Ziglar, so he was aware early on what having the right mindset could do for his life. He is now a certified trainer, speaker, and coach for the Zig Ziglar family, which is a great honor and privilege that he does not take for granted. Alongside this, he started a real estate brokerage which he later closed, and joined Remax Infinity with no client list, but with determination and a posture of teachability both in mind and heart. Between his real estate career and Zig Ziglar affiliation, he has also found purpose in supporting the “Steps of Faith foundation” that helps those who need prosthetic limbs pay for them. This is a man who has every “logical reason” to be bitter and mad at life, but the tone in which he shares his story is one of humbleness and pure gratitude for the life he leads. He was a single parent raising his three kids whom he is extremely proud of, and even gets to be “married to his best friend” now who had once cared for him when he arrived at KU med. When he looks back on his accident he says, “I wouldn’t change a thing. I like who I am, and I am who I am because of what I have walked through. Attitude trumps everything.” Get in touch with Tom: tomshaw.realtor/ Support Steps of Faith Foundation: stepsoffaithfoundation.org/

A NEW WAY TO THINK ABOUT BOATING Imagine the perfect boat day. For some it is getting the whole family together, letting the kids finally use their outside voice. For others it is having the ideal date night, a boat picnic ending in a bottle of wine at sunset. No matter what that day looks like to you there is one thing that is the same for everyone. The hassle. It’s commonly joked that the best day of a boat owner’s life is the day they buy the boat, and the day they sell. No Coast Boat Club at Clinton Marina looks to eliminate that mentality, and usher in a whole new way to think about boating. Members pay an initiation fee and monthly dues, in exchange for unlimited reservations and up to 4 reservations on the books at a time. No more fighting the boat ramp traffic, cleaning, maintaining, storing or insuring your boat. “New boaters, experienced boaters, retired boaters, families, couples of virtually all ages, are already loving the membership experience No Coast Boat Club provides. Literally, all you do is show up and go boating, everything else is taken care of for you,” Co-Founder Travis Andregg stated. The concept of a boat club is not a new one, as there are over 450 clubs nationwide, and NCBC co-founders, Peter Meuisi and Travis Andregg, decided it is time to have one in the Kansas City Metro area. They plan to keep the club about 30% smaller than industry
standards on a family to boat ratio (roughly 7:1). This club size also guarantees that every member will have access to a time slot over the major summer holiday weekends. “We are hyper focused on our customers’ experience, and as avid boaters it’s easy for us to put ourselves in the club members’ shoes. We spent nearly 8 months putting the club together, calling locations from across the country to figure out how to best optimize our patrons’ involvement,” Meiusi added. The club even worked with the reservation software system to allow for its members to pre-order pizzas, beer, ice and a variety of other items. “The member just shows up, we’ve got the boat loaded with everything they need for the day, and they go out and have fun. At the end of the day, we handle all the cleaning, fueling and storage of the boat. You just hand us the keys and head out!” For the club’s inaugural year they’ve purchased three brand new 2022 boats available to its members. A wakeboard boat, tritoon boat and a fishing crossover boat. All of these boats can be used universally, you can use all of them to fish, tube, or just drop anchor and hangout. NCBC also plans to upgrade the boats every couple of years to ensure the members have access to the best vessels available. The club provides training for all of its members, personalized for any level of boating experience, CONTINUED >

and focuses on member needs. “The most important thing about the club is making sure everyone feels at home and comfortable,” said Andregg. The boat club isn’t the only new program Clinton Marina is rolling out this year. They are also doing Float Local Fridays with live music, food trucks and brewery tents that are open to the public. You’re Not Too Young for Financial Planning By Marc C. Shaffer, CFP®, AIF®, EA CFO at Searcy Financial Services, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm
I’ve heard many young couples say their life is too simple for financial planning. They think planning is something they’ll get around to when they’re older and thinking about retirement. Have you ever felt this way? This mentality could be keeping you from building a strong financial foundation for your future. I think about the baby boomer generation. Many of these individuals worked a few jobs throughout their life that they stayed at for several years, owned a home and had a few children. They worked, they saved, they retired. I have friends who are decades younger than this group who have started companies, employ several workers, own their home and additional real estate, have set up trusts and other savings and investment accounts, and the list of their complicated financial journey goes on and on. Age is not a factor in how important a solid financial foundation can be for you and your family. As a young adult, you won’t be focused on the same planning issues as your parents, but that doesn’t mean your issues aren’t as important. For example, your budgeting journey might currently include paying off student debt. Do you really want to carry that debt into your 30s and 40s? Financial planning could help you address paying down debt while still strategizing to save for future goals such as buying a house or trying a new career. Your journey toward starting a family might include infertility planning or adoption, both of which can have a larger than expected impact on your finances. Your career path might lead to you starting or becoming a partner in a business, which could bring about more unique insurance needs. Or perhaps, your journey looks more “traditional” but you still have a family and future to plan for that will arrive sooner than you think.
So, what are some elements of financial planning that you need to think about? • • • • • • • • • •

Budgeting and Knowing Where You Stand® Goal Setting Saving and Investing Early Getting Out (and Staying Out) of Debt Preparing for Retirement Preparing for Emergencies Protecting Your Credit Insuring Yourself at Every Stage Budgeting for Education Expenses Prioritizing Your Health
Don’t be discouraged when life gets in the way of your plan. You’ll want to make adjustments along the way, and you may decide the dreams of your past are no longer the dreams of your future. Planning young does not mean you have to have everything figured out. You can start planning right now and work toward building your solid foundation day after day. Having an advisor on your team to help you set and work toward your goals from a young age can help you build a solid financial foundation. An advisor can help you solidify your goals and develop a plan to reach them, but can also help with financial literacy and be someone to turn to for answers to tough questions. You are not too young for a financial plan and you’re not too young to get help from a financial advisor.

The Fuel House
ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
The Fuel House is any car enthusiasts dream. This premier automotive country club is located in the historic Olde Mill Properties building, which owner Hunter Saulsbury says he found with his father, Wylie, by mistake. “Wylie, my father, Jerry, my grandfather, and I were on a motorcycle ride and we missed our turn in downtown Bonner Springs. We followed the 32 Highway truck route and bam! There was the building,” says Saulsbury. The building was formerly Tiblow Mill, a nearly forgotten 100-year-old building named after the city of Tiblow, now known today as Bonner Springs. They immediately saw the potential of this structure that others for decades couldn’t. “Wylie has been in construction for a long time—when he saw the building, he knew this would be his next project if he could CONTINUED >

get it for the right price. The building had been vacant for quite some time, and there wasn’t a single toilet, light or HVAC unit that worked. It has taken a lot of work to open.” Much like restoring a classic car, Tiblow Mill was brought back to life better than before. “The original vision and inspiration was Wylie’s—he wanted an intimate place to host business meetings, entertain clients and just hang out with like-minded professionals. While that is still the basic premise of the Fuel House, we have worked to continue adding amenities to improve the experience, such as an in-house mechanic, detailer, restaurant, brewery, golf simulator and hobby shop. We want to have something for everyone.” Located in the same building and open to the public is an outdoor activities space with lawn games, Ten and Two coffee bar, Quentin’s BBQ and Sides, Olde Mill Ice Cream, Outfield Beer Company and Grip’n’rip KC, all separate businesses that work very closely with each other and add to the experience. There’s a fully private side to the Fuel House with an automotive event space,

gallery and co-op work space where members can not only work on cars, but relax, watch the game and enjoy a drink inside their fully stocked private lounge that’s open 24/7. Members are of all ages and different backgrounds, but all are united by their passion for cars. “Having access to the members lounge, indoor car wash, members work area, cigar lounge and pool table are fantastic perks of membership, however, the network is a great perk as well—the members here are just great people. We also do a lot of fun member events such as wine tastings, go-kart track rentals, member track days and private movie premieres. We try to do a lot of unique things that appeal to the members. “The Fuel House is hard to describe—it’s more of an experience! There are always projects going on, so people seem to never get bored. It’s a classy yet industrial space where nothing is perfect, but that is what makes it great.” Their Cars and Coffee event takes place the second Saturday of each month through October, with an open house to explore the venue from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. For more information, visit thefuelhouse.com.

“I love you so much.” It’s one of Austin’s many remarkable and Instagrammable street murals but is also a love letter from locals and visitors alike who adore this “weird” and wonderful city in the South. The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!
Photography Nathan Fluellen
This month, our City Lifestyle family of travel enthusiasts are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Austin to introduce an exclusively curated guide to this lively destination paired with a GIVEAWAY* opportunity to win a 2-night trip for two, with round trip airfare from American Airlines! Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public.
Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. Austin’s slowcooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss. Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th f loor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu. But first you should start your day with a cup of joe from Jo’s Coffee. Known for its iconic “i love you so much” mural-clad exterior on South Congress Avenue, patrons come for the hot coffee, good food, cold beer and people-watching. As for Austin’s retail and local maker scene, the possibilities are endless and elevated. 2ND Street District boasts a mix of boutiques and shops to get your fashion fix and new home decor. For the gentlemen, embrace the full district experience, shopping League of Rebels, a bespoke experience with tailor made lifestyle wear, or Bonobos, the pioneers of custom fit chinos. Then enjoy a fresh shave from Austin’s premier Finley’s Barber Shop. Following some retail therapy, head over to Upstairs Circus, a unique concept where DIY meets the bar; pick your project, enjoy a libation, create a masterpiece and be merry. Now let’s talk about live music. Whatever your scene is, you’ll find it here. With hundreds of live music venues, you have plenty of options available to soak up the sounds.
