LIFESTYLE LETTER

May - Ladies

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Laura Poskie | laura.poskie@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating women. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. I am surrounded by so many strong females who have taught me life lessons by their words and actions and who bring joy and laughter to my life. However, there is no greater woman to me than my mother. My mom is the definition of an advocate. She celebrates every little victory with me, is there to fight through life’s battles, and mourns with me through losses and heartache. Whether you are family or an acquaintance, she knows how to come alongside people and truly journey with them through trials and is there for the long haul. She has a heart for those who are hurting, rejected or without a family and does not hesitate to invite people she may barely know to our holidays who may be alone. She is a ball of energy, is always up for fun and is the master of balancing everything. Not only did she raise 10 children, but after my youngest brother went to kindergarten, she decided to go to college to earn a nursing degree. I can’t imagine what a balancing act that must have been. It was no surprise that she picked hospice care as the area she practiced nursing because her passion for truly being there for people in their hardest hour comes so naturally to her. It is impossible to talk about my mother without mentioning her strong faith and reliance on God—It always comes first and created such a strong foundation for our family. I wish I could say that I always truly appreciated my mom for the remarkable woman that she is, but it wasn’t until I became a young adult to fully realize it. This month as we approach Mother’s Day, I encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life, whether it is your mother or perhaps someone else who left an imprint on you, and if they are still living, reach out to them to thank them for the impact they made. You won’t regret it.

SERENDIPITY FARM & WINE

Serendipity Farm & Vine is Johnson County’s newest destination vineyard for events, wine tastings, live music, food and more. Located in Stilwell just east of the Overland Park Arboretum, it feels like a slice of heaven with its three rustic elegant barns and expansive breathtaking views of the land that’s planted with seven wine varietals made and enjoyed on property. Serendipity is defined as the occurrence of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way and having good fortune, which is exactly why owner Amy Roberts picked this word to name her business—everything in her life brought her to Serendipity. “For about 27 years I worked in a financial business helping build a business,” Amy says. “I did everything from making appointments, marketing, financial advising and paying bills. I realized I needed to make a change and do something true to myself. I started volunteering for SafeHome and then CASA, both nonprofits near to my heart. I really enjoy helping families and educating victims of domestic violence; however, I was still trying to figure out who I was as a person and find something that I could do for a career.” Amy looked at businesses to buy and realized she liked building from the ground up: “I searched deep down in my soul and thought of the things that really make me happy—family and friends, the outdoors, hosting events and being creative. I just happened to be looking for land for my parents to be closer and ran across this property for sale with three barns and a few other structures. It wasn’t what they were looking to buy, but I loved it!”

Amy says she was fortunate to buy this property in August of 2019, which is why it’s called Serendipity Farm & Vine. “It was by chance that life brought me to this point to run across this land.” Amy had a vision of what she wanted to do with the property and taught herself how to make her dream a reality. “This land had everything but just needed some work and creativity,” she says. “I wasn’t sure if any of this could be possible, so before purchasing the land I researched and applied to be a Kansas Agritourism business. I had discussions with the county, an architect, engineers and both Kansas and the federal government liquor licensing department. It took a lot of hard work, time, help and research to figure out how to go about renovating barns, coming up with wine labels and going through the approval process. I really appreciate everyone who helped in this journey. My dad, Tabb, brought his knowledge of home winemaking, but I knew going from home to commercial winemaking would take a wine consultant, George Hoff of Stone Pillar Winery, to help us.” In 2020 she planted approximately 3,500 vines with different varietals with friends and family. It was a labor of love. “We opened for weddings in June 2020 and the tasting room in November 2020 during the pandemic, which hasn’t made it very easy getting started. I luckily had my parents, Tabb and Joyce, and my kids, Garrett, Paige and Savannah, and friends helping out. I also hired an amazing team and tasting room manager, Kristen Werner. Kristen is very talented and writes the poems on the back of my wine labels. It really takes a village to make all this happen.” CONTINUED >

If it’s your first time visiting, expect friendly tasting room staff, a great variety of wines, delicious food and talented local musicians in an indoor and outdoor barn atmosphere surrounded by beautiful natural landscape. The Brown Barn is their largest venue with a wedding ceremony space, including a private space for the bridal party to get ready. Their winery and tasting room is found in the Green Barn, and the She Shed features four bedrooms, four baths and lounge space with luxurious accents, perfect for a girls getaway. “My wine labels say, “A little piece of heaven came and landed from the sky.” This is what I think of this place—it’s a great place to gather with friends and family, have some great wine and food and get connected with each other again.” Making an appearance on all their wine bottles and at the end of their business name is the monarch butterfly, which symbolizes transformation. “The butterflies represent a change in my life—they start out as caterpillars, which transform into beautiful butterflies that show what they really are and spread their wings to fly.” For women wanting to pursue their passions and start their own businesses, Amy says in all caps, “DON’T BE AFRAID! TAKE A CHANCE! If something goes wrong, or if you have a hurdle, get back up the next day and keep trying. Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Live the best life you can without regrets! I want to show my two girls to be strong independent women—you can do what you want with hard work and dedication. You are never too old to learn something new.”

As a pioneer in the local niche market, Owner Sara Garris had the vision, talent and drive to be the first to bring luxury picnics, bell tents and Kata Tipis to the KC area. Her design background, editing eye and creative gift for making spaces beautiful have all contributed to the elevated look at her events. Established in 2018, Wonder & Whimsy Events provides an “authentic and memorable experience” to commercial and residential events with unique rental tents, furnishings and decor to provide visually stunning surroundings. “It began with a Tipi,” Sara says. “I fell madly in love with the impressive Tipis when I first laid eyes on them, and I knew other people would love them too.” As a one-woman show with help from family and friends, Sara saw a need for going beyond the typical rental options and services. “Being in the Midwest we always seem to get anything fun or new dead last. I’m here to change that.” From backyard parties to large-scale events at Union Station and at the Nelson, Wonder & Whimsy Events brings the bling, the rustic charm or the boho chic to wedding proposals, date nights, graduation picnics, kids’ events, charitable fundraisers or corporate events. Their biggest trend is luxury picnics. Prior to starting her business, Sara worked as director for an interior design showroom and was the lead designer for Pottery Barn on the Plaza. She’s also a wife to her husband, Ron, and a mom to their two kids Arrow, 6, and Feather, 3. “The three of them are the loves of my life,” Sara says. “As a stay-at-home-mom, my mission is to find a healthy work/life balance to ensure I have quality time with my family.” As a small event planner/liaison for clients, Sara loves collaborating with other local businesses, especially Jami and Laura of Good Stuff China. “Together we design amazing tablescapes, and I couldn’t do it without them.” Because Sara makes events look effortlessly beautiful, people sometimes assume it’s easy. “The setup literally takes us hours and is physically demanding, but the hard work is always worth it when our clients are thrilled,” she says. “I love watching the

look of awe on people’s faces. It’s so fun and fulfilling knowing they get to enjoy their beautiful surroundings, even for a short time.” The company offers multiple packages to work within a variety of budgets. They book several months in advance, so schedule early by contacting wonderandwhimsyevents.com. “Wonder & Whimsy is timeless. Tipis and picnics have been around for centuries, and I don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon.” – Sara Garris, Founder, Wonder & Whimsy Events.

Aixois PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

A WELCOMING, NEIGHBORHOOD SPOT TO ENJOY A FAMILY ATMOSPHERE

Aixois was born out of owner, Emmanuel Langlade and his wife Megan’s desire to create a space that makes people happy, which they have been doing for over 20 years. Many of the customers they have welcomed into this intimate, relaxed dining room since Day One continue to dine at Chef Emmanuel’s tables, requesting their favorite dishes, which he consistently offers. “If I take one off the menu, and someone requests it, I will prepare it for them of course,” he muses. Aixois is a classic French bistro in Kansas City’s Brookside neighborhood, just a few blocks from Country Club Plaza in the Crestwood Shops. “The idea and goal of creating Aixois was to become a neighborhood restaurant, so people can come through the restaurant for coffee and breakfast in the morning, then come back for lunch or dinner,” he says. “The Patio we created to resemble a Parisian café.” CONTINUED >

Nothing is purchased premade, and everything is created fresh from scratch. They source their pastries, vegetables and meats locally. Pastries come from Ibis Bakery and Farm To Market Bread. (They have a very good relationship with them.) Emmanuel sources mushrooms from the local mushroom company, KC Farms, who grow all kinds of vegetables. He also works with local farmers, My Cool Planet LLC and Urban KC. He tries every wine before he serves it. If he likes it, it goes on the menu! “Our patio is popular due to the ambience we have created,” he says with a smile. “We have a fence, trees and grass, and it is very well maintained. It’s nice to see parents at the table while their kids are playing on the grass. During the pandemic, I covered half of the patio and installed heaters, and we use it year-round now.” The artwork we have was done by local artist, Russell Ferguson, which adds to the ambience of the setting. Emmanuel loves the springtime, with the seasonal vegetables. He prepares specials daily for lunch and dinner. A favorite dish people really enjoy and request is their veal liver. Many members of the staff have worked with him for 15 to 20 years, which adds to the neighborhood feel. He is flattered when he hears customers tell him they enjoy the warm, kind reception. “There is nothing intimidating about my restaurant,” he adds. “We are a French café, without the pretentious attitude!” What does this chef love about his restaurant? “I love my staff, my customers, I love the location, I feel like when I come to work every day it’s paradise! My kitchen is open, so I can see all my customers coming through the door, the front of the restaurant, the patio, I feel like I’m part of it. I’m proud of the whole show. It’s nice to be able to recognize my customers. I want them to feel like they are coming to a friend’s home.” Visit aixois.com for menus and event schedule.

David Lloyd’s journey has changed the way he sees wellness, fitness and life. His journey to health and fitness began following college when he studied mixed martial arts. In 2007, he was introduced to yoga and began noticing similar stances between it and Martial Arts. He has been a certified yoga teacher for eight years. In 2005, he experienced a neck problem stemming from sleeping on a small pillow while on vacation. This brought on neck, shoulder and back issues for him, and he discovered yoga essentially erased all the aches and pains. In 2012, he and a former business partner wanted to spread their love of yoga and its amazing benefits to the community.

Lotus Yoga and Wellness was established in 2014, and Lloyd took full ownership in 2016 and in 2019, moved the studio to its new location on Metcalf. Lloyd completed Level II, Level III and has been a Reiki Master since 2017. Of his staff, he said, “We have nine different yoga teachers that teach a variety of times and styles. Christi is full of joy and used to dance for theater shows down in Branson, Missouri. Janet lived in New York before the pandemic and was a Broadway actress. Jessica is a full-time mom of two wonderful kids. Jodi is a personal trainer and has taught teens that have gone on to be professional sports players. Kelli is an Occupational Therapist and attends to several clients every week.” They offer a mix of classes year-round for beginners to experienced, all listed on their website. All are judgment-free. Happy glitter! That is a scientific term for D.O.P.E., Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin and Endorphins, which your brain releases during yoga. “Take a big breath and breathe in happy fuel!” he smiled. “In yoga classes, we stretch the spine in all directions: fold forward, bend backwards, sway sideways right and left, and twist right and left. The older Chinese people have been doing this for centuries. They know if they stay working in their rice fields as they age, they continue to feel young. Awesomeness is here! I can already see you walking through the door! Om Shanti!” In closing, he wishes us Namasté, which means, “The light in me sees the light in you, and we are one.” Visit lotusyogakc.com for more information or call 913-217-7153. For the past 12 years, William and Renee Huff have been working in a welcoming though small space bringing treasured jewelry back to life and creating new pieces from nostalgic items. In their new location, they have taken things out of the vaults, plan to offer classes and hold events. Jeweled Legacy is now at 7635 Quivira Rd. Shawnee, Kansas 66216, only a few blocks away from their original location. “It’s kind of funny that we found a place so close,” Renee says. “We did a lot of driving around and looking at properties, but it turned out that the perfect spot was within walking distance. Talking to the property manager, we found out his father had built the building and he was managing it for his dad. That it was another legacy cinched it.” She shares that this move has been an interesting group effort. “Our customers voted on paint and floor colors. They scouted locations. Several of our customers stepped in and helped us move, paint and organize. They really wanted us in a bigger location. My husband would joke that we only had three percent of our jewelry out! In the process of moving, I began to wonder if he wasn’t right. Our new location has 17 additional display cases. We also have room for events and classes.” Previously, they offered classes through the Communiversity and used whatever space they had available. Now, they can share their wide knowledge base about jewelry with classes in several different areas of interest. Of course, history, because that’s what they specialize in, including the Jewelry in History series they previously offered through UMKC’s continuing education program. They will also include hands-on classes for making jewelry and identification classes so people will know what they are buying, whether it’s old or new. Renee understands all too well the changes Covid placed on many businesses and feels fortunate to have been able to take limited appointments. “Availability for many items is still an issue. We even ran into that moving. The flooring we picked out was supposed to be in stock, but their inventory count was off by 60 boxes. It was a crazy whirlwind to get everything done, but we wouldn’t change a thing. The new location is beautiful, and the outpouring of help and love from the community has been humbling. We appreciate everyone who has helped us grow and look forward to many more years with old and new friends!” Visit jeweledlegacy.com for more information.

P ret t y Lit tle Pla nters Let Bluebird Floral uplift your mood with custom bouquets and daily deliveries.

Spring has arrived and with it come the nurseries overflowing with beautiful plants and flowers just waiting to adorn our homes. Container Gardening Expert Lindsay Blashaw, former owner of Avant Garden and wife of HGTV’s Matt Blashaw, gives us a crash course on how to easily put together aesthetically pleasing planters to celebrate the season and welcome in guests. “Your planters should be an extension of your home and your personality,” she says. She likes the idea of carrying the style from inside your home to the outside. Lindsay shares that herb gardens, although functional, are also popular right now. “Since herbs aren’t always the most interesting plants visually, pairing them with a bright, fun pot is a great way to add visual appeal.” Lindsay loves the idea of creating an outdoor oasis in the backyard that can also be brought indoors when the weather changes. She shares that you can complement a pool or pergola by adding in green and softening the look of the area. You can achieve this by “bringing in tropical potted plants or succulents versus planting them in the ground and trying to maintain them in what can often be difficult soil.”

LINDSAY’S TIPS FOR CREATING BEAUTIFUL PLANTERS: • Choose the right location. Consider the light your container will get and what time of day it gets the most light before picking the plants. • Consider your space. If you have a tall entryway, choose plants that will add height. If you have a symmetrical front stoop, add plants and pots that mirror one another for a clean look. A large space may allow for multiple planters of varying heights. • When selecting your plants, think of choosing a “thriller, filler and spiller.” Choose one plant that will be the focal point, likely with some height to it and color, then another plant that fills out the pot nicely and one that overflows and spills out over the edge of the planter creating contrast. • Do not fill the entire pot with soil, this can be costly and also doesn’t allow for proper drainage. Instead, turn a plastic pot upside down in the bottom to fill up space and allow oxygen to move through. • After planting always use a good granular plant food. • For a professionally finished look add moss and smooth flat stones or pebbles to cover soil.

PROTECT YOUR

FOUNDATION The foundation of your home is extremely important. Everything in your home rests upon it. If you have concerns such as water in your basement or cracks in your foundation or sheetrock, or if your floors feel off, then you need to read on.

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR: • Cracks in the drywall • Doors sticking or not functioning or strike plates that do not match-up • Windows that stick • Water in your basement • Wavy or bouncy floors

36

EXP E RT H E LP | EV ENT PLANNI NG + S E RVI CE S

THINGS TO HELP TO PREVENT FOUNDATION ISSUES: • Extend your gutters away from the excavation path of your home. • Keep your gutters clean so they do not waterfall next to your foundation. • Fix any concrete pads that slope towards your house. • Fix your grading on the home to run away from the structure. • Make sure to address water concerns right away. Foundation repairs generally become more expensive the longer you wait to fix them. Many options if caught early enough can avoid excavation. If you have questions pertaining to water or structural regarding the health of your foundation, call Brad with Foundation Recovery Systems at 816.946.0211 or email bradb@foundationrecoverysystems.com

Stems: A G a rd e n S o i ré e PARTY OF THE SUMMER FEATURES SPECIAL HIGHLIGHT THIS YEAR ARTICLE BY LISA MOYER

It’s Stems time again, but this is no ordinary garden-variety party. Since 2008, The Arts & Recreation Foundation has been hosting the annual summer fundraiser attended by thousands at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens at the peak of its summer beauty. This year’s event will take place on Sat., June 25 and will feature a sneak peek into construction of the Arboretum’s new visitor center. “I’m excited for everyone to see that the project is really happening,” says Vicki Lilly, executive director, the Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park. “The vision we’ve been sharing for six years is truly going to transform the Arboretum into a showplace for Overland Park. Guests will see the new visitor center (called LongHouse) along with new gardens and water features taking shape.” Since 2016, the Foundation has been raising money for improvements now under construction, raising more than $11 million to date with completion scheduled for spring 2023. Proceeds ensure the Foundation can also continue to support and develop Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead and city art installations. Tastings of all kinds will be available along paths and among the gardens. Fine wines, craft beers, and specialty mixed drinks complement the food, along with balloon and caricature artists and a fireworks display. (Adults only.) For many, Stems has become a June tradition. The signature hand-painted Stems wine glasses are also back with new designs. “Our hand-painted wine glasses have become Johnson County collectors’ items!” Vicki says. “Artist Angi Hejduk, CEO of Interurban Arthouse, paints the glasses. And that’s how the evening starts–each guest selects a glass, volunteers offer a first pour, and the party has begun!” For more information visit: artsandrec-op.org
