Home. It is where we should feel the most comfortable and a place of reprieve and acceptance. Every home tells a story—from the scratches on the countertop to the squeaks in the floorboards. But more than anything, the memories that we make within those walls are what speak the loudest. Traditions are often passed down from one generation to the next, and new traditions are made with the ones we cherish the most—our family. I love to move. My husband and I used to flip houses the first several years we were married, but once having children we settled into a neighborhood that we wanted the kids to attend school at, and since we have four kids, we have stayed put for quite a while. I still get the itch to move and dream about redoing a new space or living in a lake community, however part of me used to hesitate. I know our home holds many memories for our children. Just as I cherish my childhood home, I know they feel the same way. My parents still live in the house I was raised in my entire life, and the nostalgia of their home sends me right back to living there all those years ago even though it looks nothing like it used to. It feels so good to be back at their house every time I walk through the door. I want that for my kids, too. However, I came to a realization recently. My sister’s house burned down to the ground in the Boulder fires over the holidays, and every single thing they owned, including all the special keepsakes, was gone in an instant. Their entire neighborhood was completely destroyed with a moments notice to evacuate immediately. My sister and her husband and four young children got out with their lives. They feel blessed. They will rebuild. And even though the house won’t be the same, and every single item they owned is gone forever, their memories, traditions, and love for one another remains. It isn’t the location that matters but rather the traditions big and small—the familiar smells coming from the kitchen, the family customs carried on and the people who make it feel like home. And new memories are made. March is our Home and Design issue. We are sharing design inspiration from neighbors in our community and not only showcasing gorgeous interiors but ways to elevate our outdoor living spaces as well. From my home to yours, I wish you love and peace in your homes.

The road to life in their lovely, open, modern farmhouse in Bucyrus, Kansas, has been paved with adventure and love, making the experience rewarding. Colleen Payne, her husband, Chris, and their 11-year-old daughter, Layla, moved from their hometown of St. Louis in 2017 for Chris’ job with Protiviti. They began at the Residences at Park Place in Leawood, then found the 12 acres of farmland and knew they wanted to build their own home. They even spent time in their Airstream along the way! July 2020 was their move-in date. Colleen did the design herself, utilizing her more than 20 years of experience in interior design and real estate. She installed all the cabinets in the kitchen and mudroom, minus the custom island and vanities made by Wes Edwin Design. “Since my dad was a carpenter and painter, I was lucky enough to pick up so many skills from him,” she says. “We love how open and comfortable our home is and enjoy ending our day on the couch in front of our fireplace, constructed with driftwood and beach pebbles.” Colleen wanted the color scheme to be predominantly black and white so she could play with décor and change her art, pillows, bedding and other accent pieces easily without worrying about wall color. “White walls give you such a great backdrop for designing. You can do whatever you like, and it won’t clash,” she says. “It gives you so much more freedom to change it up!”

Colleen shares she has always had a little bit of an eclectic aspect to her design aesthetic in all her homes and has scattered antique pieces around amid new, modern ones. “Good design and comfort are my priorities, and this doesn’t have to be expensive,” she says. “We were on a very tight budget with this house, and I chose where I could splurge to make the space come together.” She has always loved the Scandinavian construction style and incorporated that into their build. She sketched the layout and design and had an architect and engineer finalize the drawings. There is a lot of oak, high ceilings, exposed steel beams and tie-rods, black windows and white walls. The white oak floors were installed by friends at Vaz Hardwood Floors in Stilwell, Kansas, and the custom white oak kitchen island, white oak benches that flank the fireplace, white oak shelves and white oak/painted

vanities in all four bathrooms were also made locally by Wes Edwin Design and Erica Kay Design. “We wanted lots of windows to take in the gorgeous sunrises and sunset views, so we decided to do a commercial storefront look of large glass windows and triple sliding door on the side,” she says. “The basement design was all about family and friends and is the hub for guests, so we widened the oak staircase to the basement and have a ninefoot clearance throughout.” The outdoor living spaces add so much to their family time, with comfy couches, a dipping pool and swing. A passion they have is their FarmStrong Flower farm, where they offer flowers at the Park Place Farmers Market in Leawood Saturdays, May through October. She also does private events, sells custom arrangements, offers DIY Bride/Groom buckets and more. Visit @farmstrongflowers on Instagram for more information.

WHERE UPSCALE MEETS COMMUNITY AND FAMILY

Verbena, an upscale American restaurant that can be found in Prairie Village right across from Meadowbrook Park is the perfect place to have a business lunch, enjoy a nice evening on the patio, or visit for a special date night. Whatever occasion, Verbena is the place to go. When you walk in, you notice the heart and commitment of this establishment. The classic style invites you to stay awhile and communicates you are here for an experience in addition to great food. This place is reminiscent of Cafe Provence and the French Market in Prairie Village, as it should, the owners who created those community staples are the same ones who created the vision for Verbena. The people are what make the establishment so special. The owners, Joanne and Patrick Quillec, know their staff, not just their names but their stories, and genuinely care about them. Their general manager, Zachary Claster, makes their vision come to life through his excellent customer service and comfortable atmosphere. Chef Aaron Wells-Morgan has been there for 1½ years and has made quite a reputation for himself in that short amount of time. They know and talk about how they could not do what they do without their amazing staff and the wonderful community that has supported them. They, along with so many other restaurants had to pivot during the beginning of the 2020 pandemic and have been able to not just survive, but thrive through local community support and the entirety of Kansas City. When it comes to the food, each dish is a work of art that you can’t wait to eat. They strive for classic dishes with a unique twist. With the small plates, you will experience the perfect size to split for two or if you want a lighter meal. They are known for their CALAMARI CLAM CHOWDER— toasted nori, green curry, salted cracker—a spicy and rich but not heavy soup, the perfect amount to warm up on a cold day as a precursor to your meal. Moving onto The RYE PIEROGIES, a dough dumpling filled with cheese and potato filling, that has a decadent flavor with a wonderful aftertaste. Next, the BRAISED RABBIT MAFALDINE PASTA is not only a wonderful dish but one that is a customer favorite. This unique dish is wonderfully comforting with the homemade noodles and all of the flavors complementing each other. Add a delicious sparkling rose’ and it will be a meal to remember. They also have a wonderful wine selection (white and red), mixed cocktails and seasonal drinks. Their menu changes every season and is currently on the fall menu (winter menu on Thursday March 3). They have white wines from California and France and reds from California, France, Oregon, Argentina, Chile, Italy and Spain. There are so many wonderful options, and with a seasonal menu, you always have a reason to go back and try something new. Verbena is a must-eat and must-experience restaurant!

HOW TO CREATE FUNCTIONAL & BEAUTIFUL SPACES UNIQUE TO YOU HGTV host, Matt Blashaw has a passion for empowering others to take on their projects around their homes. Through his shows over the years, he has loved seeing the transformation process not just with the projects he helps with but with the people involved. Matt wants to teach them how to look at a space, and think, “I have a solution for this.” He believes in the power of making mistakes and learning from them. This is evident in his work

with landscaping and renovations in homes that he has worked on. He knows the power of a transformed space and how accomplished one feels when they have done it themselves—“getting to see the result to amazing.” He is currently filming a new show called Build Forward where they redo the homes of individuals who have started charities. The show will premiere this March on HGTV. A new resident to Leawood, Matt has found nothing but welcoming people and success for his new contracting business, Blashaw Residential. With a background in real estate, Matt not only has an appreciation for the unique homes Leawood has to offer, but he ensures that the homeowners receive the space and atmosphere they desire that is unique to them. Since starting his company, he has worked in many different cities and currently is working with another Kansas City HGTV star, Tamara Day, on a project. Blashaw and his wife moved to Kansas City for the culture and kindness of the Midwest, and they have been loving the place they live! Since he and his wife transitioned from warm California, Matt has begun many home renovation projects for clients. One of his favorite products to use are the Versatile Decorative Screen Panels from Barrette Outdoor Living ® that create privacy with upscale style. They come in many different designs and two sizes and add elevated designs to a space for little cost. In addition, these panels are very durable and can be installed yourself or with a friend. With the beautiful homes of Leawood and the surrounding areas, he appreciates how these panels do not take away from the architecture but add to it while updating the home for the desires of the homeowners. Contact Matt at mattblashaw.com or find him on Instagram @mattblashaw.

Building a dream home from the ground up ARTICLE BY EMMA BALKENBUSH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE MUNDO

Becky Hillyard never imagined she’d be able to build and design her dream home from the ground up. The process is a long and tedious one and requires much attention to detail. However, with the help of Starr Homes and McCroskey Interiors, she was able to bring her vision to life. “I still can’t believe that we are living in it,” Becky says. “I remember the months leading up to moving in, and it just didn’t seem real.” Her expansive Leawood home has a wide variety of unique and beautiful features.

26

M UST SE E | HOM E + D ES I GN

Becky says that working with Laura McCroskey of McCroskey Interiors was ultimately one of her best decisions when it came to selecting the home’s design. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh, I will probably just pick out everything on my own,’” Becky says. “In hindsight, I don’t think I could have ever done the build without Laura.” The two have a similar French modern taste, and Becky says all of her ideas were only further enhanced by McCroskey’s help, who suggested small details such as grill on kitchen cabinets, sliding spice cabinets and the kitchen’s marble hood. Becky says the home’s focal point is her kitchen, which includes marble counters and a matching island. The design took a bit of convincing on Laura’s part. Becky has always loved marble, but admits she had concerns about it staining, especially with three little ones. However, Laura explained staining wouldn’t be much of a concern. The marble would likely get some etch marks, which she said only helps give it character. “I’m so happy that I did it, it just kind of sets the tone of our home,” Becky says. Laura’s ideas and expertise also allowed Becky to go outside of her comfort zone when it came to her kitchen’s butler pantry. The giant space acts as a second kitchen behind her kitchen with immense amounts of hidden storage. “It’s not just pretty, it is functional, and it’s something that she pushed me on, and I’m so glad I ended up doing it,” Becky says. The pantry hides the home’s oven, microwave and dishwasher. It has a space where Becky can easily make her morning coffee and smoothie and then hide the appliances. It has freezer and refrigerator drawers, so many things Becky uses on a daily basis are easily accessible. While the space provides multiple hidden storage areas, it also has open shelving that Becky is able to style how she likes using beautiful containers to house ingredients such as olive oil, nuts, spices and pastas. “It really kind of is a store,” Becky says “If I run out of olive oil I have a ton to grab from, and those are things that have a long shelf life and can be beautifully styled.” The pantry has a door that exits to the home’s outdoor lanai, which makes it easy for guests to come in to grab a snack or drink during summer parties by the pool. The home’s basement has several features that are great for entertainment. There is a basketball court for kids to play as well as a media room with a giant comfortable couch for watching movies. Becky also has a bar area with open shelving units from the counter top to the ceiling. “They are beautiful gold ones with glass and they are just such a pretty touch that you can style however you want, and it

“After several years of envisioning her dream home, she still pinches herself every morning that she and her family get to live in it every day. She said the wait was well worth it."

really makes this fun element in the basement for entertaining,” Becky says. The basement also has an exercise room and a dry sauna for after workouts or getting out from the pool. The home’s primary bedroom is on the main floor and has a closet for both Becky and her husband. The room walks into the laundry area. For others hoping to build and design their dream home from the ground up, she advises investing in a designer, especially in the initial design of the home. She also wants to encourage homeowners to take their time when it comes to making selections and not to be afraid to speak up when they don’t like something. “It felt so good to know that all the time we took and all the tears and all the stress it caused was totally worth it,” Becky says. “It’s perfect and is exactly how I wanted it.” To see more of this home, and inspiration from Becky for all things home decor, fashion, motherhood and more, visit @cellajaneblog.

Barnhouse Custom Homes Brings Dreams to Life With Unique Open Designs

ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPE RT PHOTOG R APHY BY JANIE JONE S

LOCA L’S CH OICE | HOM E S E RVI CE S

Gardner Leaver, owner of Barnhouse Custom Homes, designs and creates out-of-this-world living spaces that sometimes resemble the historic barn many of us grew up with. Barnhouse is a family-owned design + build company focused on new construction—from traditional stick-built or modified timber frame homes to pre-engineered steel or pole barn structures. Specializing in modern farm homes, Barnhouse harvests old barns to utilize reclaimed timbers and barn board to provide an enriching contemporary country feel. Modern amenities, luxury and charm are built into every board. Gardner wasn’t born in a barn per se, yet he has found his passion building them. So how did this transplanted New Yorker grow up to be the talented aficionado he is today? His story is truly heartwarming and a genuine slice of down-toearth Americana. Originally from Montauk, New York, he was raised on a ranch. “I’m a sixth-generation rancher,” he says. “Montauk is on the tip end of Long Island. It is a little beach town known for surfing and fishing, and a popular getaway for tourists. I ended up going to University of Rhode Island on a baseball scholarship where I studied entrepreneurial business and met my wife, Amy. She is from Overland Park and was going to school there on a volleyball scholarship.” Growing up, he was always fixing fences and building sheds, and he and his father, Rusty, built their modified timber frame home in Montauk in 2006. This is when he began his love of building. “My family sold our ranch in 2010, and we relocated our ranch to Weatherford, Texas.” While in Texas, he cut his teeth on various modes of construction, everything from stick-built homes on slab, to pre-engineered riding arenas and barns. He spent three years there, managing the ranch, training horses and running 700-plus cattle at a time on 350 acres. “When it came time for my wife and I to have kids, we moved to Overland Park,” he says with a smile. “We now have 5-year-old Blakely, 4-year-old Jackson, and baby girl, Ryan, who is 7 months old.” When they moved to Johnson County, he spent the first two years doing research and putting together his team. He decided to start the company, Barnhouse Custom Homes, and their first CONTINUED >

project was a spec house built in northern Miami County which is truly a hybrid in every sense of the word. “My father and I have partnered with a friend in the Amish community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He is our boots on the ground,” he says. “He hunts for old barns to reclaim timbers and barn wood.” Barnhouse is family-owned and operated. Gardner’s wife, Amy, has partnered with him to assist with day-to-day operations. They are moving into the original spec home on 20 acres in Miami County. “We have built most of our homes in rural areas, but that’s not to say we don’t build in higher density neighborhoods,” he says. “We are committed to honesty and open communication. I love bringing our clients’ visions to life.” Barnhouse Custom Homes serves the Kansas City area. Call them at 913.777.8766.

One look at a once blank wall adorned in lush, vibrant, all-natural, sustainable and maintenance-free moss, and you’ll awaken your inner nature lover. Moss-As-Art has a way of growing on you. Although technically it doesn’t. The innovators at the KC-based Fat Plant Society have figured out how to preserve American-grown Reindeer and Pillow Moss using a proprietary mixture of paraffin, glycerin and vegetal dye to ensure it stays green—no watering or misting required. You get all the benefits of its biophilic powers without any hassle. (A real step up from your office’s dead potted plants or hotel’s living wall with its mandatory soil and expensive watering system.) “It’s a well-established fact that humans need nature,” say Morten Klinte and Kasey Laine Riley, founders of The Fat Plant Society. “Biophilic design adds these elements to the building industry and urban environments to increase the health, environmental, and economic benefits for its occupants.” This husband-wife team is passionate about all things green and timeless design, so moss installation is a natural outgrowth. They’re one of only a few companies in the U.S. installing framed moss and other moss-media. “Our moss is primarily harvested in North Carolina and Kentucky and is known for its hardiness and complexity,” Kasey says. Their work is featured in the U.S. and Canada and includes hotels and firms with local installations including PORT KC, River Market Dental, The John A. Marshall Company and Rosin Preservation at the Crossroads. Morten and Kasey founded The Fat Plant Society in 2016, locating it in Kansas City for its kindness and giving it a name reminiscent of the botanical societies of the late 1800s that emphasized community and continuing education. The story of how these two met and joined forces seems serendipitous yet destined. Danish-born Morten met Kasey in Malaysia while Kasey lived in Beijing. They married after only two weeks. Morten grew up in Copenhagen, graduated from Roskilde University, and worked in sales for The Kansas City Star before following his love of plants to KC’s Family Tree Nursery where he completed his “plant apprenticeship.”

“He amassed incredible knowledge and skill during that time along with the requisite confidence to experiment with organic materials,” Kasey says. Kasey graduated from the University of Iowa, taught advertising/public relations at Avila University, earned her master’s degree from UMKC and was Director of Communications for Johnson County Libraries for nearly 10 years. They lived in Copenhagen twice before launching their local business. “Copenhagen is a wonderful, beautiful city,” they say, “It was invaluable for inspiration and perspective, but Kansas City beckoned. We returned as the Royals headed toward the 2016 World Series. Kansas City is the kind of city you can lose your wallet in three times and have it returned to you with everything intact. But more than that, Midwestern values align with Scandinavian values. Pragmatic. No nonsense. Transparent. Kind.” Most of their work is commissioned for commercial installations, but they’re

seeing an uptick in residential projects, fueled by the pandemic and the public’s desire for green design. “When the pandemic hit, we were concerned and assumed that greenery would be one of the first things to cut, but we’ve mostly seen the opposite,” they say. “Companies are working to create ‘destination spaces’ and improve interior spaces by incorporating nature.” One notable installation at The River Market Dental includes repeating frames down the center hallway. “We call it ‘Moss Avenue,’” Kasey says. “The repetition provides such visual interest it gives most people pause. (We credit Josue Montes for his brilliant input on its design concept.)” One of The Fat Plant Society’s bestsellers is the Skinny Panel, available on their website for purchase. “It’s one of our most popular designs as a green wall building block. Clients often start with two then add additional Skinny Panels over time.”

Kasey says their favorite customer response is not actually a word but rather a gasp of delight, a reaction that “never ceases to make us both beam.” The workshop is located inside Picture and Framing Industries, Southwest Boulevard, KCKS. Visit thefatplantsociety. com to learn more.

WHY CHOOSE MOSS? • Moss requires no dirt, watering or misting yet still eats up VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the air like a sponge. • Moss is a natural softening and soundproofing material, capturing more than 90% of voice frequencies. • Moss is resistant against cold-cracking and heat-aging. • Moss retains color for at least 10 years, likely longer. • Moss needs no light so it can go in windowless rooms. • Moss is lightweight and easy to install. • Moss is beautiful to behold as art!

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now

my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant Simplicity.

Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
