It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. January is the perfect time to reflect on the past year and make a conscious decision to make positive changes. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them.I have learned a lot from this past year and how important it is to prioritize our health. As a busy mom of 4, I routinely put everyone else’s needs before my own, and while that is very natural parental behavior, it can sometimes take a toll, so I am learning the importance of balance. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here’s to a healthy and happy 2022!

Enpower, Encourage and Equip FITNESS THAT BRINGS CONFIDENCE TO ALL AREAS OF LIFE.

ARTICLE BY EMMA BALKENBUSH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

It’s easy to see why women of all ages show up excited for a group fitness class led by Angie Thomson. Angie is the founder of Thomson Team Training in Overland Park, also known as TTT. Her life’s passion is empowering women through fitness while also incorporating the word of God. She said the mission statement of her business says it all: “We strive to empower, encourage and equip you to feel confident in all areas of your life,” Angie says. While Angie says physical transformation of working out is a plus, her classes are also about nurturing the mind, body and spirit. Angie and the other trainers at TTT, Tara Hale, Chrissy Bailey and Jana Goolsby, specialize in high-energy, circuit and personal group training classes for women of all ages and skill levels. She and her team work to create a welcoming environment, and they understand some women may feel nervous or intimidated at first. “I think our community has truly been amazing since day one at just encouraging girls and welcoming them in and saying ‘girl I know you haven’t worked out in 10 years or maybe you haven’t

worked out in your life, but it’s OK, I’m going to show you how and I’m going to work through this with you,’” she says. Angie always loves speaking with women after their first class and hearing how welcome they felt and how much fun they had during the workout. “I think sometimes we connect a really hard, intense workout as being terrible, and it’s not the case—girls want to be challenged,” Angie says. Her hope is that by combining fitness and faith in a positive environment, she can help women reach their full potential in life. “Once they feel confident in themselves and they know who God has made them to be and the gift that God’s given them it’s so easy to not compare and to not compete, it’s just so easy to try to be me,” Angie says. Angie’s love for helping others on their fitness journey began when she was a college student at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She remembers sitting on her dorm room bed asking God what career she should choose. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/J OH N S O N C O UN T Y

“I will never forget that moment, He said, ‘I want you to learn how I created your body, and how it’s designed, and then I want you to be able to teach other women how to take care of their bodies,’” Angie says. As a lifelong athlete, Angie knew the physical and mental benefits that come along with health and fitness and was excited to share her knowledge with others. She majored in exercise physiology and became a personal trainer after graduating. After spending 14 years working as a personal trainer, she felt a calling from God to start her own business. She said her favorite part of the job is never ending, but if she could pick one it would be watching women be able to do things in the gym and outside of the gym that they didn’t think they could.

14

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

“Watching them have this inner confidence of ‘oh my gosh, I didn’t think I could do that, and I just did it!’” Angie says. “It’s like, ‘yes you can and you just did!’” With the start of the new year, Angie wants to encourage everyone who has fitness as a goal to schedule an appointment with themselves to do some type of physical activity consistently. It can be as simple as a walk. “That will become a part of your weekly routine, and then once you see how great you feel just by making that small change it is motivating,” Angie says. Anyone interested in learning more about TTT can visit tttkc.info or on Instagram at @thomsonteamtraining.

TIPS FOR INCORPORATING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

01 // Decide what your specific goals are, and make a strategy and a game plan to reach those goals. Having this in place allows you to track progress, notice changes, and continue with that motivation keep moving forward. 02 // Set an appointment for your workouts. Block out that time, and don’t allow obstacles to get in the way. Designate around an hour, 5-6 days a week to prioritize your fitness. 03 // Choose the type of workouts that you will want to stick with. If you enjoy something and look forward to it, you will be much more likely to succeed and stay consistent. This often includes a fitness community that will notice you when you aren’t there. the accountability factor is huge. 04 // Set aside 2 hours a week to meal prep. Preparing the fuel your body needs to reach your goals, accomplish your workouts, and get the results you’re striving for, will be key in your overall success.

It’s a new year which means it’s time to set some new goals! I never make any resolutions, but I think it’s a great process to reset, evaluate your goals and challenge yourself to achieve new things. Every year I set a new reading goal for myself. Being mindful and intentional about what I hope to get from my hobby helps to keep me dedicated and purposeful with my limited spare reading time. 2022 promises to be a big year for new books. If you are interested in more recommendations and reviews, please follow me on

Instagram at @DownToGetTheFictionOn. This month I’ve got a mix of upcoming 2022 books that I loved and a couple of backlist favorites. Most of these recommendations have some element of health and wellness included in the story whether that be mental health or personal growth from a character. I hope as you read these books you will relate to or find compassion for these characters, their struggles, celebrate their accomplishments and laugh along with them and maybe find a new favorite book along the way.

BLACK CAKE by Charmaine Wilkerson (On Sale 2/1/22) Bryon and Benny have been estranged for many years until their mother dies and leaves behind recordings that they must listen to together and one last traditional black cake for them to share. As they begin to navigate through this puzzling and at times heartbreaking story, they each struggle to come to grips with their own past and the past of these people they’re learning about for the first time. Will these recordings bring them closer together or are there too many secrets that will drive them further apart? BLACK CAKE is a fantastic novel that focuses on families and choices in a subtle but powerful way. There’s much to be learned about in this story and I was engrossed from the very beginning. Look for this book on many 2022 book lists as it’s bound to be a bestseller!

WEATHER GIRL by Rachel Lynn Solomon (On Sale 1/11/22) Ari has her dream job as an on-camera meteorologist working for her childhood hero, Torrance Hale. Torrance is more of an evil boss than loving mentor since she and Seth, her ex-husband/ station boss can’t keep their hostile fights out of the office. After the Hales ruin another work function, Ari teams up with Russell, her quiet sports desk co-worker, to “Parent Trap” their bosses. What Ari didn’t plan on happening was growing closer to Russell. With her own history of failed relationships and a complicated family dynamic, Ari’s not sure she’s ready to let someone new into her life and may still have time to build back up those walls before it’s too late. I loved this story! There is wonderful representation throughout the book and it takes on many serious issues such as mental health while never losing its humor or fun nature. Be warned this is a steamy romance!

THE ARSONISTS’ CITY by Hala Alyan The Nasrs are bound together even though they’re spread across the world. When their father makes the unpopular decision to sell the family home in Beirut, the three adult children along with their reluctant mother all must travel back to their ancestral home. As they’ve spent much of their adult lives separated by distance, the Nasrs will be confronted with their complicated lives when they are no longer able to hide their family’s secrets. This multigenerational story seamlessly weaves the past and present together as we uncover more about the Nasr family. Rich with culture, THE ARSONISTS’ CITY in an unflinching tale about family, love and history. While complex and deep, this book is so well written it’s easy to become completely invested in the lives of the Nasr family.

HOW HIGH WE GO IN THE DARK by Sequoia Nagamatsu (On Sale 1/18/22) When a researcher in 2030 discovers a long-buried virus in Siberia, the team works to figure out how to contain the ancient virus. Once unleashed, this new-old virus will move across the Earth and change the scope of the planet in unimaginable ways. Readers are then taken on a journey as humans must navigate this new life 5 years, 10 years and many years later. From virtual reality cafes to intergalactic adventures, this wide sweeping intricate novel connects stories in a marvelous, captivating way. As many of these stories are delicately intertwined, this is one to be read slowly and attentively. This is a genre that I don’t always love but this book I would recommend over and over again!

REAL EASY by Marie Rutkoski (On Sale 1/18/22) Samantha is a gorgeous young woman who loves her somewhat jealous boyfriend and his precocious daughter. Sam’s successful at her job but when she takes a young co-worker under her wing, the lines between professional and personal become blurred especially when they both go missing. With so many secrets and lies being told at the Lovely Lady, the search to find them is not easy. REAL EASY is a thriller, so expect some dark dialogue. This is a character driven, slow burn thriller that is not going to give you whiplash with all of the shocking plot twists and red herrings.

CRAIGSLIST CONFESSIONAL by Helena Dea Bala Have you ever felt compelled to share a secret with a stranger or maybe tell someone something about yourself without any repercussions or judgment? Helena Dea Bala decided to place an ad in Craigslist seeking people who wanted to tell a stranger about themselves. What started small became a full-time commitment as Dea Bala navigated the emotional journey of learning other people’s secrets. Through this experience, these strangers all were able to tell their truth and for many this became a cathartic experience. In this collection of essays, you’ll read stories for which you can relate and stories that are unlike anything you’ve personally experienced all while feeling the unblinding compassion that Dea Bala holds for each stranger. As we all have different paths and hurdles in life, CRAIGSLIST CONFESSIONAL is a great reminder that there is often a lot that bonds us together through shared experiences in grief, regret, love, family and relationships. Mission Farms is the ideal spot for this locally owned restaurant. Staci Cross founded it with the goal of offering really healthy and organic food for busy people. And she has succeeded. She serves hearty warm bowls, a large variety of salads and sandwiches, organic cold-pressed juices and whole-meal smoothies to be truly nourishing for their customers. “It was always about proving what I thought could be accomplished in Mission Farms as a prototype for a national franchise brand,” Staci notes. “I know this world needs more availability to really nourishing food, not another hamburger or chicken concept. All our menu items are

about providing balanced nutrition with as many Phyto-nutrients from plants as possible while keeping in mind taste! That’s why I originally engaged Chef Michael Smith to create all the recipes for each menu item so the healthy ingredients would taste delicious! Our customers keep returning because they trust the ingredients and love how they taste.” Customer favorites include the “Take on the World” warm bowl. This is a superfood bowl that actually tastes amazing and has been their best-seller since the day they opened. Staci explains that the cravings are real. “We do encourage them to branch out because we’ve seen customers get new favorites. I think it’s the quality of the ingredients that make our food so special. We use mostly organic ingredients, no GMOs, no damaging oils or cane sugar, and only high-quality meat and fish. You can totally taste the difference. So fresh! All our food is made from scratch, too.” It is easy to eat clean, highly nutritious food and drink here. Whatever your taste buds crave in your wineglass and on your plate, they will come alive here. Although everyone who visits has their own special favorite, one that stands out to most is Dierberg–Star Lane–Three Saints Tasting room. This is attached to the Hermannhoff Winery facility in the downtown area. Directly across from the train station. Dierberg, Star Lane and Three Saints offer California produced wine. It is owned by Jim and Mary Dierberg, who also own Hermannhoff Winery. They purchased the winery in 1974 and continue to raise its reputation as a place for education and entertainment. They also own Drum Canyon, Dierberg and Star Lane Vineyards in Santa Barbara, California, where they raise traditional European varietals. For the best tasting experience, Adam Puchta Winery can’t be beat. They offer small bites of chocolate and shortbread with certain tastings so you can experience unique flavors. There is one combo with a lime shortbread and one of their wines that ends up tasting like a margarita! It is a fun thing to experience. Tim Puchta, sixth generation, and his son, Parker Puchta, seventh generation, continue to operate the winery, while son, Spencer Puchta, also seventh generation, has ventured out on his own. For the best tour, choose Stone Hill Winery, which is known as the biggest and nicest of the facilities in Hermann. They give a great tour with lots of history, so if you want to hear about how Missouri wines began, and see some original cellars, this is the tour to take. Norton, Missouri’s official state grape produces a big, full-bodied red. This is the flagship wine of Stone Hill. The 2011 Norton and 2012 Cross J Norton both won a trifecta of awards, including the coveted Missouri Governor’s Cup, adding to eight other Stone Hill Governor Cup awards. They also use such grapes as Vidal, Chardonel and Vignoles. This winery is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1965, local farmers Jim and Betty Held, with their four children, purchased and moved into the original winery and restored it, along with the restaurant. What’s in Your Cart? HEALTHY AND AFFORDABLE MEAL PREP FOR YOUR LIFE!

If you find yourself skipping meals because you don’t have time, or if you believe eating healthy is unaffordable, fear not and read on! As a dietitian, I can tell you that eating healthy is easier than you think if you follow these tips:

TIP #1. YOU CAN STILL HAVE A VARIETY OF HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS FOODS BY PLANNING AND PREPPING YOUR MEALS FOR THE WEEK.

ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN-AYOADE, MBA, MS, RD, LD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

· Preparing whole meals or dishes ahead of time saves a lot of time for busy people. · Ingredients required for specific meals can be prepped ahead of time to reduce total cooking time in the kitchen. · Having pre-prepared meals on hand can also reduce portion size and help you reach your nutrition and wellness goals. · Choose microwave and freezer safe containers for proper storage, including BPA-free plastic, flexible silicone or glassware containers. TIP #2. CHOOSE INGREDIENTS THAT ARE VERSATILE AND CAN BE USED IN MULTIPLE MEALS TO REDUCE WASTE AND SAVE MONEY. · Example: Choose familiar recipes for tacos, chili or spaghetti in the same week to use all your ground beef or turkey. I brown the ground beef and portion it in freezer bags flattened out for space saving freezing and time-saving cooking. · Pre-cut vegetables can be used for fresh ready-to-eat meals that do not require cooking, like salads and sandwiches or as part of a cooked recipe. Include leftovers in meal planning. · I also cut up ripe fresh fruits and freeze them to use in smoothies instead of throwing them out. · Frozen fruits and vegetables often cost less and last longer than fresh ones. They retain high-quality nutrients because they are frozen immediately after being harvested. · Most frozen vegetables have no additives and preservatives, but some may contain added seasonings, salt, sugar or sauces. Avoid added ingredients by paying attention to the label and ingredient list.

TIP # 3. MAKE A GROCERY LIST BEFORE YOU GO SHOPPING · A list helps limit distractions, keep you on budget, restricts unhealthy impulse purchases and reduces multiple trips for forgotten items. · Buy kitchen staples to have on hand to make quick simple meals like canned tomatoes, tuna fish or salmon, corn, your favorite beans and grains such as rice, quinoa, barley, farro and whole grain pasta. · Plan your menus based on grocery store sales and produce that are in season and add beans for plant-based protein.

34

T R E N D SE T T E R | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

· Buy extra staples when they are on sale, and don’t overlook the bulk bins to buy just the amount you need. · Buy pre-prepped items in the grocery store to further save time or use the salad bar for small servings.

TIP # 4. TRY NOT TO GROCERY SHOP WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY · Everything looks delicious when you are hungry, and this could lead to unnecessary and unhealthy food purchases. · The additional calories may not be needed, and food could be wasted if not eaten.

TIP # 5. HEALTHY SNACKS ARE POSSIBLE The total amount of snacks you prepare will depend on the required number of snacks planned daily, based on your health and wellness goals. My snacks of choice include: · Nut butters with crackers or pretzels · Fresh fruit (whole or pre-cut) · Sliced vegetables · String cheese, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus · Home-made trail mix with dried fruit, unsalted nuts and seeds, to limit sugar and sodium intake Portioning snacks during your overall meal prep prevents mindless snacking without knowing how much you are actually eating. Meal prepping can improve your health and your life! Contact: Claudia Martin-Ayoade, MBA, MS, RDN, LD. Registered dietitian/nutritionist at Claudia4RD@gmail.com and agesmartnutrition.com

The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 36

S ELF CA R E | FITNESS

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

Purchasing a new home is stressful enough, but things were a bit more complicated for these homeowners. Shifting from a traditional Tudor in Mission Hills, the family prepared to move into a modern, new build in Southern Johnson County. Unfortunately, this stark stylistic contrast meant that many of their current furnishings wouldn’t gel within the new space. And while the prospect of a blank canvas can be exciting, it was a daunting undertaking for the homeowner, who logs long hours as a physician. “As a working professional, I didn’t have time to bring together the concept I had for my home. I also did not have the expertise to piece together different components to create a cohesive space that reflected my personality,” she explains. Upon finding this dream home, located on a spacious lot backing up to green space, the homeowner and her husband met Stephanie Stroud of Stephanie Stroud Interiors, who was assisting the builder with design. It was a perfect match. “Even though many of the selections had been made before the purchase, after our first meeting, I felt like I had them in mind all along. Our design objectives were perfectly in sync, and transitioning from building selections to furnishing their new home was seamless,” Stephanie says. The first step was to meet at the couple’s current home to determine what would or would not be making the trip south. Not only were they shifting to a more contemporary aesthetic, but they were also losing significant square footage. “Listening to my wants CONTINUED >

and needs was critical to me,” notes the homeowner. “Stephanie diligently took stock of my design wishes while incorporating pieces I already owned to best maximize my budget for new items. The result was a unique blend of contemporary with some classic flair.”

FAVORITE SPACE With its warm and inviting ambiance, clean lines, and upscale style, the homeowner’s favorite space is the living room. “Stephanie provided several plans to choose from and guided me through the process. What resulted was a sophisticated room that served as a gathering place for my family and friends. It’s my favorite room in the house, no question.”

FAVORITE ACCENT PIECE Nothing sparks conversation and leaves a lasting impression quite like a work of fine art. And when it came to this new home, there was a large, blank wall that practically demanded one. “We needed something to balance the large section of floor to ceiling windows across the room,” Stephanie recalls.

“Artwork is not just a way to fill the space—it also is a venue for me to showcase my client’s style.” So, the owner and designer worked together to find a showstopping solution—a custom, nine-piece, black and white abstract oil on canvas. The homeowner was thrilled with the results. “It’s my favorite accent in my home. I provided inspiration photos to Stephanie, and she delivered a design beyond my expectations. Everyone that visits my home compliments this piece, validating its uniqueness.”

A WORD OF ADVICE: For anyone planning a similar move or remodel, this homeowner offers a suggestion: “Stay true to your overall vision while also leaving yourself open to new ideas, concepts and solutions.” The partnership between homeowner and designer has resulted in a new build with warmth and character that toes the line between relaxed and refined. This is one dreamy home. Design by Stephanie Stroud Interiors stephaniestroudinteriors.com 913.226.5401

“The concept of True Food Kitchen was founded in 2008 by Dr. Andrew Weil, an integrative medicine doctor. He founded the anti-inflammatory diet, which promotes eating a wholesome diet of nutrient-dense ingredients that positively impact the way you feel.”

As we all emerge from the holiday season, we are craving comfort food to fill our hearts and souls. Thank goodness there is a locale to do just that! True Food Kitchen, which opened in the winter of 2019, has been serving anti-inflammatory food which is easily digested and promotes wellness. “We have 39 locations around the country and are opening four more in the coming year,” says Christine Ferris, director of marketing. “The concept of True Food Kitchen was founded in 2008 by Dr. Andrew Weil, an integrative medicine doctor. He founded the anti-inflammatory diet, which promotes eating a wholesome diet of nutrient-dense ingredients that positively impact the way you feel. Ingredients are sustainably sourced, and the partners they buy food from are the top of the top. All meat is grass-fed and hormone free. Wines are all organic, biodynamic or sustainable from the finest growers in California. Every ingredient that goes into what is on your plate is clean. They also can specifically strategize with you to adapt foods to whatever diet you follow, from vegetarian, paleo, carb or gluten free. The menu is fundamentally based on science, which ensures all its “craveable” dishes and drinks work to increase the longevity of people and the planet. “Our menu continues to change with the seasons, and we don’t sacrifice taste for flavor,” Christine says. “Eating fruits and vegetables that are in season means you get the most nutrients and they are the most flavorful.”

Their mission is to inspire people to eat better, feel better and ultimately live better. To further offer their foods to more people, they have two locations that allow people to order to go, one in Tempe, Arizona, and one in San Jose, California. This month, they are introducing a few new winter dishes to keep people healthy and strong, delicious and detoxifying. This includes a new Winter Immunity Soup made with edamame beans to help you feel full, bean sprouts, carrots and more. They are also offering a Daily Reset Package for the month of January that people can order, which includes juices, kale sides and more. They are keeping their top-selling menu available. “This includes lots of vegetables, lots of warming foods. Our menu is comprised of favorites with a healthy twist,” she says. “For example, regular Chicken Parmesan can be over 1,000 calories. Ours is grilled chicken breast made with less breading and a side of seasonal vegetables, which reduces calories. Our pizza is made with house-made flax dough. Think of all these as comfort food with a healthy twist.” True Food Kitchen emphasizes community and holds seminars and classes. Each restaurant has its own chef-led culinary team who takes ingredients, spices and unique finds to bold new heights, with an eye for peak-season freshness, bright colors and creative takes on classic favorites. True Food Kitchen is located at 4749 Pennsylvania Ave. on the Country Club Plaza. Visit truefoodkitchen.com or call 816-931-4947.
