MEDIOCRE COOK, I APPRECIATE THE ART OF CREATING A FLAVORFUL DISH THAT NOT ONLY IS SATISFYING BUT ALSO EVOKES MEMORIES. The aroma of cinnamon apple crisp and chili brings me right back to my mom’s kitchen as a child and screams that fall is here. My mom is an incredible cook. She can whip up anything out of what looks like nothing and it is always delicious. She doesn’t measure her ingredients and almost never follows recipes, and is the master of doctoring up any simple recipe that adds that extra pop of flavor that she just knew it needed.

After becoming a mother of four kids myself, I appreciated my mom’s dedication to cooking so much more. She made a home-cooked meal every single evening for all 12 of us, and she made almost everything from scratch without using processed food or jarred sauces for years. I’ll be really honest and say I wish I could say the same for myself. I am always looking for ways to make cooking simpler and save time, and on busy nights I have no problem using a jar of Ragu with our pasta (don’t judge me) or a Costco meal prep kit. Regardless of the differences in our cooking styles, my mom instilled the importance of gathering at the table every evening as a family and spending uninterrupted time with each other. With our constant busy schedule of sports, activities and homework, as simple as it is,

Why Women Need to Take an Active Role in their Family Finances
By Jessica Searcy Kmetty, ChSNC®, AIFA®, CPFA, C(k)P® Principal at Searcy Financial Services, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm
T
here is a confidence “gap” when it comes to women taking charge of their finances, and the lack of confidence and action could leave women vulnerable in many situations. Over half of American women say they have no idea where to begin when it comes to taking an active role in their financial decision making and only about 20% report feeling prepared to make wise financial decisions. A wave of empowerment is running through mainstream media these days. Women are preaching to the younger generations to NOT let a partner control the financial decisions, not rely on a partner or parent for money, and to take an active role in the financial management of their family. With increasing lifespans, higher divorce rates and women not marrying as often, more than 80% of women may face being solely responsible for their own financial wellbeing. Blindsided by Divorce Almost half of the divorced women who come to us say that they didn’t have a good handle on their finances before their divorce. Many of them wish they would have been involved because not knowing what they had, where it was, or what it was worth left them feeling vulnerable in the divorce process. Some even say they have regrets about the divorce
settlement and would have done things differently if they’d known the financial impact of some of the things they negotiated when they were illprepared.

CRAZY KOSHER BAGELS
MESHUGGAH BAGELS IS BRINGING NEW YORK TO KANSAS CITY ONE BAGEL AT A TIME. With their secret mix of artisan flour, yeast, malt, sugar and salt, they say they’ve painstakingly perfected their recipe to the point that even a New Yorker would swear they were biting into a piece of home. Owners Pete and Janna Linde came from different bagel backgrounds, but both shared a love “As a teenager and in college at Columbia in

“Born and raised in Independence, I didn’t quite understand my need for a real bagel,” Janna says. “Having never tasted the real thing, bagels to me were round bread in the grocery store next to the burger buns and Sara Lee cinnamon toast. Why would anyone make a special trip to a special store for one of those things? That is, until I had a bite of a ‘real’ bagel with whitefish salad on a trip together in New York. I said, ‘Oh my goodness, what is this?! These are crazy delicious!’ A few bagels and a few months later, the idea of Meshuggah Bagels was born. “I was ready for a career change as an executive at a global produce company a few years before Pete was retirement-eligible, so we started doing the groundwork to build a wholesale bagel company to take advantage of my contacts in the grocery industry. We found a location and started construction after purchasing bagel ovens and equipment in a state where genuine bagels did not exist. Neither of us had ever successfully CONTINUED >

baked a bagel in our lives—it took about 20 recipe revisions before the bagels were even recognizable, and another 53 adjustments before we had the formula that became a Meshuggah Bagel. “With the bakery complete and recipe finalized, we found ourselves without any wholesale customers in November of 2015. Every retailer was in the middle of the holiday season, six months before they would be adding any new products. We noticed an article in The Pitch about the Jewish Federation’s Bagel Bash on Christmas Eve—a party for the Jewish college-aged kids of KC, with bagel in the name! Janna convinced the organizer to introduce Meshuggah Bagels as the featured food. It was a whirlwind week of certifying the bakery as kosher and learning how to bake 350 bagels for the first time. Our social media exploded, and three months later we were open on 39th street in Westport.” Meshuggah follows the old world process of bagel making religiously. “The only thing different between what we do and what was done 300 years ago in Eastern Europe is using natural gas to fire our ovens instead of wood or coal. We use the best ingredients, never add any preservatives, and allow our dough to proof for at least 24 hours before baking. The bagels are boiled before baking, topped and set on cedar planks with burlap strapping for the early portion of the bake, then flipped onto baking stones for finishing.” Their menu offers a wide variety of sweet and savory bagels and schmears along with the finest smoked seafood, including salmon, whitefish salad, and salty lox. Their bagels include poppy seed, onion, garlic, salt, rye, Bialy, whole wheat, cinnamon raisin and chocolate chip, with the most popular being their everything bagel followed closely by plain and sesame. Top with a savory schmear, like plain, rosemary garlic, garlic dill, toasted everything, garlic and herb, veggie, scallion, jalapeño, or top it with a sweet schmear, like strawberry, blueberry or Oreo cheesecake. Meshuggah Bagels has locations in Power and Light, Midtown, Overland Park and Liberty. For more information, visit meshuggahbagels.com.

DRINK LOCAL IN THE CITY AMIGONI URBAN WINERY BRINGS A WIDE VARIETY OF WINES TO KANSAS CITY IN THE HISTORIC DAILY DROVER TELEGRAM NEWSPAPER BUILDING LOCATED IN THE STOCKYARDS DISTRICT OF THE WEST BOTTOMS. Producing small lots of dry handcrafted wines, they focus on traditional European grape varietals, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Viognier. Winemaker Michael Amigoni and owner Kerry Amigoni are the husband and wife founders. It all started when Michael fully committed to his homemaking wine hobby by planting 40 Cabernet Franc vines in the backyard of his home in Leawood. It took over 10 years to develop techniques to perfect growing grapes in the challenging Midwest conditions.

Johnson County Lifestyle | October 2021
“Michael was a home winemaker since the late ‘90s,” Kerry says. “We had started a vineyard east of town in Centerview, Missouri selling mostly fruit. We realized there was more money in winemaking than selling fruit, so we incorporated in 2006 and began on a very small scale.” Amigoni Urban Winery sold its vineyard and now brings in fruit from northern California and Washington state to create their locally made wines. Varietals include Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Mourvedre and Malbec. “We offer wines not typical of the area and introduce people to wines they may not have heard of—we want wine to be approachable. Our wines are all French and Italian varietals we bring in from California. We ship in whole cluster fruit and crush, ferment and age here in our urban facility. Our bestselling wines include our Cabernet Franc, Urban Drover, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and our newer Sparkling Pinot Grigio.”

asting room the t The tasting room was built in 1909 and served as a daily newspaper for the livestock industry for 50 years. Ink is still visible on the ceiling in the back of the barrel room. Jay Neff ran the newspaper and was also mayor of Kansas City from 1904-1905, and a journalism building is named after him at the University of Missouri. Designer John O’Brien restored the space to resemble the early 1900s using reclaimed doors and tile. Renovations were fully completed in May of 2012. Their daily wine tastings include five wines that change weekly. They also offer a variety of local beers on tap that change with the seasons. Enjoy small plates from local businesses, including meat and cheese from Weston’s Green Dirt Farms, Kansas City’s Farm to Market crackers or bread with dipping oil, olive boat, house made chips from Kansas City’s Golden Ox and Leawood’s Panache dark chocolate.

Tour Amigoni’s production facility with their Cellar Experience. See grapes crushed and pressed, learn about the fermentation process and how to age wine in oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. The Barrel Experience takes you into the cellar with over 100 Missouri oak barrels used for all their red (and occasionally

wines.
Learn
how the age, origin and type of barrel impacts the wine and sample from barrel and bottle in a side-by-side tasting. In their Blending Experience, teams enter their blends into a blind tasting. Winners get to cork and take home a bottle of their special blend. Production started at around 300 cases. Today, Amigoni bottles approximately 4,800 cases per year. “We offer a wine club and continue to grow it. We add different varietals each year to continue introducing customers to different grape varietals.” Expect a twice per year subscription of small-batch blends, club-only wine releases, shipping to all over the country as well as fun local pickup parties and personalized service that takes the Amigoni wine experience to the next level. THE WAY WE WEREN’T by Phoebe Fox (on sale November 9) Marcie Malone has a loving husband, a wonderful job and happy life in Georgia. Herman Flint is a self-reliant man who seemingly appreciates his solitude on beach in Florida. When Marcie suffers an unimaginable loss, she finds herself alone and on a stranger’s couch. Herman reluctantly lets Marcie into his house, but there’s not a chance he’s going to let this mess into his life. When they start to pick away at one another, this unlikely pair begins to open up to someone new while starting to look within themselves. THE WAY WE WEREN’T is a story of finding yourself, picking up after your mistakes and learning to live again. I loved how imperfect the characters were but also how much you wanted to root for their happiness. Heartwarming and emotional, this book will give you all the feels.

If you love action movies, this book is for you! RAZORBLADE TEARS is filled with so many tense, heart pounding scenes that it’s both a page turner and a tear jerker.

NOT HERE TO BE LIKED by Michelle Quach Eliza Quan is the most qualified candidate on the ballot to run her school paper and the only candidate running. That is, until rookie writer and former baseball star, Len DiMartile, enters the race, and the election turns into a popularity contest. Filled with anger she pens a private essay that becomes a public feminist movement when someone publishes her essay for the entire school to read. Now she and Len have to work together on the paper, and they both start to realize their rival is more complex than it seems. NOT HERE TO BE LIKED is a great story that balances humorous and serious topics in a fantastic manner. Eliza isn’t your normal female teen heroine, but that’s part of what makes this book so clever. 42

THE LAST NOMAD: COMING OF AGE IN THE SOMALI DESERT by Shugri Said Salh Shugri Said Salh is the last nomad in her family’s long history of nomadic life. As the “throw away” daughter in her family, she was sent to live with her nomadic grandmother at the age of 6. Living and surviving in the desert taught Shugri about tradition, survival, being resourceful and instilled a sense of confidence she relies on for the rest of her upbringing. When she’s brought back to life in the city with her family, Shugri often struggles with finding her identity as city life is a drastic contrast to her nomadic past. Never forgetting the lessons she learned, we’re taken on a journey through her life as she travels within Somalia and beyond. This telling memoir is an extremely inspiring story. THE LAST NOMAD will give you insight into a world quite possibly very unlike your own which is such a generous gift from the author.
CRIME FICTION
CHASING THE BOOGEYMAN by Richard Chizmar In the 1980s a serial killer is on the loose in Maryland. When recent college grad and horror enthusiast, Richard Chizmar, returns to spend the summer at his parents’ house, he starts to closely follow what’s happening in his town. Chizmar quickly becomes more involved as he begins to investigate and write about “The Boogeyman.” As time passes and more victims are found, Richard falls deeper into this story. This is a fabulous work of fiction that I kept having to remind myself was in fact not a true crime novel. Chizmar takes experiences and places from his childhood and weaves them throughout the book making the story seem eerily real.

beaten path, Chef ‘Dennis The Prescott’ is a culinary change maker whose feed you’ll want to feast on Originally an aspiring musician, Canadian-born Dennis Prescott’s journey began while in university with a single invitation from another solo musician who asked him to tour with them around the US. This eventually took him to Nashville where they began making records and pursuing their musical dreams. Yet, in the midst of all of this, Dennis was not taking care of himself — eating take out, dollar menus, etc, had become a way of life. A friend had a “come to Jesus” moment with him and stressed that he needed to start taking care of himself. Having no idea exactly what that meant or how to do so, the advice was simple: “You need to start eating better.”

Johnson County Lifestyle | October 2021
The St a r t “Go to the library and borrow some cookbooks,” his friend suggested. Dennis went to a nearby library and borrowed three books only to have his friend ask why he chose those in particular. Dennis remembers saying verbatim, “I don’t know? The guy on the cover looks kinda good looking, and I feel like I could probably pull these recipes off, and he seems really happy too!” As it turned out they were three books by Jamie Oliver; it’s just that he had no idea who Jamie Oliver was at the time. Flash forward and Dennis’ first dinner-hosting experiment was made up of twenty people from the music studio, all sitting in camping chairs with beer koozies and makeshift tables in his apartment. “I remember at the time this moment of, okay, the food is on the table, it’s a stressful thing, and then everybody tucks in and they take their first bite, and there’s a moment of hush that kind of came over everyone; it got really quiet just for a second, and then everyone started talking and getting into it and I fell in love with food right there at that moment. What eventually followed were 13 episodes over nine months where the Restaurants on the Edge team traveled to and filmed restaurant revivals that included three in Canada, one in the continental US, one in Hawaii, and others outside of North America, including Hong Kong, Slovenia, Austria, Malta, St. Lucia and Finland. T r avel R ecom mend at ion s for Food ies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” Restaurants on the Edge is important and meaningful to Chef Prescott because it tells stories of hope and joy and redemption around the kitchen. Oftentimes the food space can be very stressful, but he believes that at the end of the day, people just want to spend time with other people that they love. One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start? I don’t know how to get going, so I just don’t.’ Rather than overcomplicating it, Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”
