OF WHO I AM. At an early age, I knew I had a very special father who stood out among men. I remember thinking the entire city knew who he was because of how I watched people love and perceive him, and many times introduced myself as Steve’s daughter (often surprised if they didn’t know who he was). My dad is the type of guy who will help anyone, big or small, without hesitation as if it wasn’t a big deal at all. There is never any guilt or strings attached—he is always there for anyone in a bind. Giving selflessly of his time, his talent, his wallet, and his heart are constants for him. He would give the shirt off his back even if it’s the last one he has. He instilled the importance of a strong work ethic and believing we can do anything we work hard for. My dad is a natural peacemaker and is always levelheaded and calm, which attracts so many different types of people to him. He has a knack for conflict resolution and brings peace where there was once strife. In relationships and interactions, he builds bridges instead of putting up walls. He taught me to look for the good in everyone and

BIG WHISKEY’S AMERICAN RESTAURANT AND BAR BELIEVES TRADITIONS ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS TRENDS. From hand-cut steaks, street tacos, craft burgers, salads, pastas, award-winning wings and 100+ whiskeys, there’s something for everyone. “Our co-founders Paul Sundy, Mike Heslin and Randy Gildehaus all had backgrounds in the restaurant industry,” says Laura Elliott, director of marketing. “From rolling pretzels at Auntie Anne’s to bartending in nightclubs, they all shared a knack for the service industry. With an entrepreneurial spirit, they set out to be the “corner tavern” that Sundy’s grandfather told stories about.” The name of the restaurant and the way they do business was inspired by a customer who frequented his grandfather’s tavern. For 30 years, he would come in a few times each week for a drink and would tell the bartender, “I’m only going to have one, so make it a big one.” Over time, this regular became a legend that everyone called Big Whiskey. “Our story is very real and very classic Americana. Pulling up a seat at the bar, striking up a conversation with a friend or a stranger and sharing a great toast or joke are all values that still hold true today for our brand. We’re a sports bar for sports enthusiasts, a whiskey bar for whiskey enthusiasts and a classic American restaurant to bring family and friends out for lunch or dinner.” If it’s your first time in, Elliott recommends two standout menu items.

We also hand cut all of our steaks and top them with our signature homemade steak butter.” Their extensive drink menu includes bourbon, scotch and a variety of Irish, rye, Canadian and blended whiskeys. If you can’t choose just one, try one of their whiskey flights. “We have really grown and evolved over the years with our whiskey product. We make every effort for whiskey to be approachable by everyone. We have whiskey on tap— our house BW Bourbon is distilled by Missouri Spirits. We also have other whiskey selections that rotate available on tap. Our Lynchburg lemonade is a great summer sipper. Made with Jack Daniels, it’s an easy-drinking whiskey drink for those who think they don’t like whiskey. A Journey to Forgiveness THERE IS A CALM AND GENTLE SPIRIT ABOUT DARRYL BURTON. He is both self-assured and reassuring, confident and unassuming. He wears the smile of a man who is steadfast in his faith, and the gleam in his eyes hints of an awe-inspiring future. He tells a story so awesome its weight is too heavy for him not to share with the world. IMPRISONED In 1984, Darryl became a victim of a flawed legal system for no other reason than simply being. Following a murder at a St. Louis gas station near his childhood home, Darryl was named the prime suspect based solely on the word of questionable witnesses. Even though the offender’s description would paint a picture that looked nothing like Darryl, and even though there was no physical evidence to connect him to the crime, he was surprisingly arrested. Secure in knowing that he was innocent, Darryl was appointed a public defender. Unfortunately, this legal structure continued to not work in his favor and, after only a one-hour visit with his public defender, Darryl went to trial. Following the threeday trial, he received a guilty verdict. Because he was innocent, he was unprepared for the range of emotions that flooded his existence: shock, anger, disbelief, bitterness. These were the sentiments he carried with him as he entered the Missouri State Penitentiary, and welcoming him was a banner that did little to quell his disdain. It read: “Welcome to the Missouri State Penitentiary. Leave all your hope, family and dreams behind.” 22

Prenuptial agreements: Full and fair disclosure of assets and debts An increasing number of individuals are interested in having a prenuptial agreement prior to getting married. The idea is that if the marriage does not work, the divorce can be simplified. Many hear horror stories of divorces their friends or family members have gone through. They do not want to worry that this will take place if their marriage does not work. It is true that parties can enter into a prenuptial agreement that deals with important issues in case of divorce. For example, a prenuptial agreement can address property and debt division, spousal maintenance and attorneyâ€™s fees. While many are not aware of this, prenuptial agreements (also called antenuptial or premarital agreements) cannot address child custody and child support. This makes sense when you think about it. While not true for all parties, most enter into the marriage without having kids. Thus, it is impossible to address issues involving children who are not

even born. One formality that many do not realize the importance of is a full and fair disclosure of assets and debts prior to the prenuptial agreement being signed. In other words, both parties are supposed to disclose all the assets and debts that they are bringing into the marriage. Disclosing income is also important for a prenuptial agreement. Many parties in a rush to get married might want to bypass this step. They might not want to take the time to disclose the assets and debts they have. Others may not want their prospective spouse to know. However, there are court decisions throughout the country where prenuptial agreements are being set aside because assets, debt and income were not fully disclosed. This is because a party cannot knowingly waive any rights they may have if they do not even know what exists. This is why parties entering into a prenuptial agreements really ought to take their time. The financial statements should be completed properly. Values should be listed

as accurately as possible. Identifying information such as account numbers and the companies holding these accounts should also be listed. Parties are also wise to go back and look at statements concerning assets and debts. This ensures that they are not guessing as to values. Parties who abide by this important step have a better chance of having the prenuptial agreement enforced if the marriage were ever to end in divorce. On the other hand, parties who try to side-step this important task face significant risks. A GOOD BARBEQUE SAUCE IS COMPRISED OF A VARIETY OF THE SAME SIX

COMPONENTS. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.

+ SOMETHING SWEET.

This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, brining those smoky, sugary flavors.

+ SOMETHING TANGY. Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.

+ SOMETHING SPICY.

This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.

+ SOMETHING LIQUID. It can be beer, water, chicken soda, stock, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.

+ SOMETHING TOMATO. You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
