love of children continued into college as I chose a profession where I could work with kids daily and became an elementary school teacher and later middle school teacher. Kids have a way of making what’s really important in life very clear. They generally say what they mean without having that adult filter, their imaginations and creativity are endless and their sense of wonder is refreshing. As those childhood years turn to adolescent years, they begin to formulate their worldview and make sense of the things around them. They start to make decisions about what they want to stand for and what they want to contribute to the world around them. It is also a tough time of insecurities, emotions and trying to figure out who they are. Like all families, my own four children are all so different from one another. They each have unique gifts and struggles. Something beneficial and somewhat unexpected to me has been watching how much of an impact having a family pet has made on my children. I knew it would help them learn responsibility, but I have been surprised by some of the other ways that the addition of our trusted dog, Stella, has made on their lives. She has been the perfect companion for them. She is a source of comfort when hard times or loss has occurred, big or small, as I have watched how my kids were soothed

by hugging it out with their dog without having to say a word. Stella is a tolerant playmate to my youngest, sleeps outside their doors at night in protection mode, and is willing to personally clean up any mess they make when eating (especially bacon) so

Like each of my children, welcoming a dog to the mix of our family has been rewarding for so many reasons, and it far outweighs any frustration she causes when she decides to be mischievous. The inspiration for this room came from a photo of the homeowner's aunt pictured with an elephant. It gave the kickoff point for the safari theme while still introducing a family element. A favorite piece of the room is the gunmetal spotlight floor lamp. It provides an amazing sculptural element to the space while integrating another material with the metal. DISTILLING EMOTION FROM A SHADOW, A GESTURE, A TURN OF THE WRIST HAS INTRIGUED SUSAN P. Wilson for as long as she can remember. Pencil and sketch pad in hand, she loves to capture simple moments. If “art is not what you see, but what you make others see,” as Impressionist Edgar Degas said, then Susan wants you to see the loose, fluid beauty that is all around you. Watercolors and pastels grace her sketches that interpret mood and transport the viewer into the moment. “It is the softness of a line and the serendipitous journey to bolder and bolder strokes that leads to discovery,” she has said of her own love of drawing.

More recently, Susan’s work has gone to the dogs – literally. She has been exploring watercolor techniques in her new paintings, “Best Friend Series,” now on display at the Images Art Gallery in Overland Park. “Funny story,” Susan reveals, “our lab used to devour watercolor paper whenever I left it out.” What began as a frustration with their beloved Suede, ironically inspired her first dog portrait. Capturing a pet’s unique personality with color and texture became a thing. As friends and family requested ever more renderings, Susan realized she loved the playfulness and genuinely happy expressions of dogs. The entire group of playful paintings will be on display through July after which a few paintings can always be found at Images Art Gallery. From boxers to dalmations, poodles to hounds, rescue and mixed breeds alike, Susan loves to paint the dog’s essence. She finds watercolors allow the loose, fun expressions to jump off the page.

“I FEEL LIKE HE IS LOOKING AT ME… IT COULD NOT BE ANY MORE PERFECT,” SAID ONE OF HER MOST RECENT COMMISSIONS. “I LOOK AND THEN I CAN’T TAKE MY EYES AWAY.” Susan understands. In a military family that moved 18 times in 27 years, dogs and family provided the grounding force for her life and art. She knows what it’s like to have to say goodbye to someone or something and how a painting can be a visual translation of memory. From southern roots to worldwide adventures and now a 10-year resident of Kansas, she also learned how to pare down and adjust her materials to her environment. But our five-minute visit soon turned into a longer, more emotional trip as my son began naming mice to bring home, and my daughter fell in love with Bowser, a handsome tuxedo cat. On the ride home, tears streamed down my daughter’s face because we didn’t adopt her kitty. My son couldn’t understand why it wasn’t a good idea to bring home his newly beloved mice, Twinkle and Roxie. The fact that we already have a kitten and a fish didn’t matter to my kids. All they knew is that they loved animals, and they wanted to do more to help them. So I reached out to several Kansas City-area organizations that provide assistance to needy animals and rely on the support of volunteers. They shared ways we can all realistically help, short of bringing all the fuzzy little creatures home to live with us forever. (Sorry, kids!) Divorce Financial Statements: Do Not Overstate or Understate Values Stange Law Firm, PC

In a divorce, courts are to divide marital property in a just manner when considering all the factors in an equitable jurisdiction. To divide marital assets in a just manner, courts need to know the value of the marital assets as well as the debt. As a preliminary matter, parties are generally asked to file financial statements with the court. In the financial statements, parties are to list all the marital assets and debts. This provides the family court judge an overview of what marital assets and debts exist. The exact procedure in terms of how this works can certainly vary by state and locality. Different states and counties can have different forms, deadlines and nuances. However, in a general sense, parties are often asked to provide an approximate value for all marital assets early in the case. Marital assets can contain almost everything from the house, cars, investment accounts, retirement accounts, business interests, trust interests and an endless array of other assets. For many parties, this can be quite difficult. They might not have had a recent appraisal giving an exact value for a particular asset. Thus, when they are asked to provide a value on their financial state-

ments, they might not know how to answer. This can lead to parties essentially guessing as to a figure to complete the financial statements. There are two mistakes that parties might make when attempting to list a value of a marital asset in which they do not know the value: Mistake one is overstating the value of the asset. In other words, they list the marital asset at a significantly greater value than it is actually worth. This can be the case with various assets. However, as it relates to larger assets, like the marital home, business interests or other large assets, over estimating what an asset is worth can be a big mistake that can skew the property division in an unjust manner. Some parties can make the opposite mistake. They may underestimate what certain marital assets are worth. This can be a big mistake as well that can skew the property division. Ultimately, courts need accurate values for marital assets in order to make a just division. If the assets are overvalued or undervalued, the court is not going to be working with accurate numbers. If the numbers are not accurate, the court can end up dividing assets in a way that would appear just to the judge, but is not actually just when looking at real figures. Further, when a party underestimates what a value is worth as well, courts can sometimes think

that a party is doing that on purpose in order to hoodwink the court on the value of a particular asset. This can oftentimes hurt the credibility of a party. If a party does not have a recent appraisal or valuation, what most parties ought to consider doing is having the asset formally appraised first by an expert. If the party is able to do so by local rules, they might state that the “value is unknown at this time” until such time as that valuation is completed. Either way, parties need to be careful not to overestimate or underestimate the value of a marital asset in a divorce. Doing so can cause an adverse result for a divorcing party. Rock and Brews | 5701 W. 135th St. (Overland Park) Located in Prairie Fire shopping center, this restaurant allows pets on its large covered patio. There is a specific menu for pets that includes grilled chicken, bacon, burgers and hot dogs. Staff puts out dog bowls with the restaurant logo and bone as the handle. This restaurant also host pet events as well featuring local nonprofits that work with animals.

(Johnson County Park & Recreation District) + LEAWOOF: 106th and Lee Boulevard, Leawood. Leawoof is seven acres at the east end of Leawood Park near I-435. Leawoof has two fenced areas – one for small dogs and the other for larger dogs, with three covered benches for owners to sit back and watch. 50
