BEFORE ME, LAYING THE FOUNDATION OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A GOOD PERSON, TO FOLLOW GOD, TO SERVE, TO BE HUMBLE AND TO TREAT OTHERS WITH LOVE AND DIGNITY. I love history. I become completely engrossed in discovering my heritage and what my ancestors and family before me accomplished or sacrificed, and the legacy they passed down. I have been fortunate enough to have many strong female role models, including my incredible mother, but I wanted to honor a woman who had such a lasting impact on me throughout my entire life, my grandmother, Jean Newman. We called her Mama Jean. She lived to be 91, and, up to the end of her life, she was a thoughtful, vibrant, classy and incredibly smart woman. Even as a young child, I knew there was something about her that I wanted to absorb. Always up for a party or a social gathering, she brought the class. Everything about her impressed me. The way she dressed, decorated her home, her gourmet cooking and even the way she wrapped a present was a work of art. She knew how to make every little detail special. Mama Jean made getting old look fun, and she acted and looked like she was 20 years younger than she was. My grandparents were night owls. They stayed up every night until midnight and slept in late. Fancy appetizers were a nightly occurrence to tide them over so they could enjoy a late dinner with a glass of wine on the deck. They placed a

high priority on their marriage and their time together. It was something I always took note of, and I knew in my heart that I wanted to be just like them when I grew old. Mama Jean always put others before herself, even when she was nearing the end of

her life. Instead of concentrating on any discomfort, she prayed for her caregivers and family instead. As a mother of eight, she set an example of selflessness and devotion to prayer her entire life, praying for all 90 of her family members by name every night. I learned so much from the example she set forth her entire life, and the memories I have of her I hold dear to my heart. This month, we are celebrating women in our community. The women we have the privilege to share with you all share a common message of love, determination, service and hope.

Accompanying this was his increasing irritability and his making a crunching motion reminiscent of someone struggling with constipation. Jennifer's intuition told her otherwise, and she began to suspect that Rocco was having seizures. It would take several trips to the doctor, a few terrifying events of Rocco turning blue and Jennifer's persistence for them to get a diagnosis: lissencephaly.

A PLETHORA OF REASONS DRAWS CLIENTS TO ARLENE LADEGAARD FOR THEIR KITCHEN REINVENTIONS. Some homeowners seek improved function for their kitchens, others want to freshen up the style of their home on a budget, while some clients pursue a completely new kitchen within their existing space which allows for endless possibilities. Ladegaard, owner and award-winning interior designer of Kansas City’s Design Connection, Inc., does it all; from updating existing finishes to complete kitchen remodels and addresses clients’ design desires with her straightforward approach. “When it comes to your remodel, do what you really want to do, but do it in a style that matches the rest of the house,” Ladegaard recommends. “Don’t follow the trends. If you do what you love and what’s right for the house, it will stand the test of time.” Kitchen renovations can be a costly endeavor, so sometimes Ladegaard will give a space a completely different look by updating finishes, as was the case with this Olathe home. Ladegaard completed the new look by darkening the cabinets, newly styled backsplash in a stunning herringbone pattern, quartz countertops that blend well with the light gray tiles, GE appliances in their new graphite finish and leather bar stools all resulting in a total reinvention of this 2005 home. “If the style of the cabinets and the layout work, you can work with what you have and still create a stunning picture,” Ladegaard says. When a Leawood couple’s grown children moved back in, they were faced with mealtime mayhem: multiple families were colliding in their existing kitchen. They dreamed of having an island and separate prep areas for everyone to help out.

An island extended from a wall that houses a gas cooktop, prep sink and eating area while also creating two defined spaces to allow multiple family members to work in the kitchen at the same time. Cream painted cabinetry and wood accents maintain the homey style of the kitchen and keep it consistent with the traditional Before
style of the home. Above all, the new kitchen design matches the family’s new lifestyle. When Overland Park clients requested a brandnew kitchen layout and design to replace their dated one, the Design Connection team served up an all-white kitchen that’s fresh, crisp and clean. Gold accents bring the space in-line with today’s modern kitchen styling. Lighted display cabinets create visual dimension but also enhance function with their added storage space. “Before, this kitchen looked dated,” Ladegaard says. “Now it possesses a timeless look that the owners will love throughout their time living in the home.” Whatever your budget or lifestyle an updated kitchen space has endless possibilities.

Being Accountable for Your Best Life By Marc C. Shaffer, CFP®, AIF®, EA Principal at Searcy Financial Services, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm
As I was chatting with my mentor one day, he tells me there’s a great guy he wants me to meet and his name is Marc Shaffer. Well, that’s me, of course. I had him explain and he told me I was too busy focusing on one thing and all of my energy, my time and my passion was being exhausted in that one area. I wasn’t spending time with myself, I wasn’t letting myself contemplate what was beyond that singular area of focus, and if I continued along that path, I might end up having done one great thing in my life at the expense of knowing myself and growing in other areas. Luckily, I had someone in my life who could recognize this behavior and keep me accountable to living a full and diverse life. Do you have someone in your life keeping you accountable to the things you say you want to accomplish? In my profession, I get the opportunity to talk about big dreams with a lot of people. I hear people talk about wanting to spend a summer driving across the United States with their children, wanting to start a business or write a book, or wanting to spend time volunteering for a charity important to them. When most people think about financial planning, they usually expect the conversations to center around money, not around the way they want to live their life. However, money is just a tool that helps people live a life that makes them happy. Money is the tool that helps you accomplish the What and Why in your life. Even if you have the What and Why determined, you need someone keeping you accountable for the When so that your plans and dreams don’t get permanently stuck in someday mode. Common Reasons People Do Not Reach Their Goals: 1) They fail to write the goal down. 2) They create goals that are not well defined. 3) There is no true personal meaning behind the goal which means there is no drive to achieve it. 4) They fail to define a reward for achieving the goal as well as a reward for achieving the milestones required to get there. 5) They do not share the goal with another person for accountability, help and support. 6) They never incorporate the goal into a realistic plan that includes measurements, timelines and resources. Our vision and dreams can, and probably will, change many times and it’s okay to approach your dreams from where you currently stand. One challenge people have when trying to identify their dreams is that they approach the task as if they’re only allowed one big goal that will drive the direction of their entire life. I try to help people identify these dreams with a positive/negative exercise. To start, identify what you love now and want to make more time for in your life. Then, consider things that bother you about your life and determine what you would like to have happen instead. And remember, these are flexible. As an example, I am no longer trying to become the motocross racer I used to dream of being! Once you’ve determined your direction, tell someone who will keep you accountable. You don’t want to find yourself in your rocking chair at the end of life thinking you missed out on living!

t h e j u d g e Rhonda Mason Rhonda Mason, a district court judge in Johnson County, participates in numerous speaking engagements around the city and absolutely loves to encourage youth to go after their dreams. She was the keynote speaker at this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, and she currently serves on the Kansas Bar Foundation board of trustees as well as the Autism Society at Heartland. The woman that she looks up to most is her mother. While she was not a businesswoman, she was smart, compassionate and made sure her kids had whatever they needed to be successful. “Sometimes the leaders are not those in the forefront, but those in the background making things happen. My mother taught me to put God first, be humble, compassionate and not to be afraid of going after my dreams."

Sunayana Dumala
Sunayana Dumala’s life was turned upside down last year when she lost her husband, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, to a hate crime shooting at Austins Bar and Grill. Since then, she has been sharing her story and advocating to spread a positive message of unity and love. In partnership with her employer, Intouch Solutions, they have launched a Facebook initiative called Forever Welcome. By sharing stories from the immigrant community, Forever Welcome raises awareness of immigrants’ contributions to our society. It emphasizes that there is no “you” or “me” when it

comes to living in the U.S. We are all welcome and belong regardless of where we were born. “Before February 22, I was a different person just leading a normal life. Cindy Bobbitt By nature, Cindy Bobbitt is quiet and reserved, but early in her career, she realized that to be successful, she had to discover her more assertive self to overcome her fears and get involved. She was drawn toward commercial banking at a time when there were few women doing it. She had to work to break down barriers and prove her value in the business and found her niche in health care banking. Additionally, she became actively involved in several medical organizations, including the Medical Group

and as a board member for Susan G. Komen. Mona Enna Mona Enna, originally from Kokkola, Finland, met her husband, Jeremiah, a Kansas City native, while on a dance trip to Israel. They are the founders of The Culture House, an arts organization, and Störling Dance Theater, a professional dance company. One of her most rewarding experiences has been through a dance production they created called "Underground." As a co-choreographer with Tobin James, they crafted a story together in dance about the Underground Railroad which is performed at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. This production has developed their audience to be one of the most diverse in Kansas City. Mona is inspired by people who do courageous and good things. ALMOND PISTACHIO TARTLETS WITH APRICOTS INGREDIENTS + 1/2 cup oats, gluten-free + 2 1/4 cups almond flour + 1 teaspoon baking soda + 1 teaspoon salt + 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon + 1 cup melted coconut oil or butter + 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed + 3/4 cup granulated sugar + 1 tablespoon vanilla extract + 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice + 2 large eggs + 1 1/2 cups chopped pistachios + 1 cup apricot jam + 8 ounces dried apricots + Whipped cream INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly coat one large or six mini tart pans with oil. 2. Place oats in blender and blend until turned into a powder. Place in a medium-sized bowl and whisk in almond flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Set aside. 3. Stir together melted coconut oil or butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar until smooth. Stir in vanilla, lemon juice and eggs. Add the flour mixture. Scoop the dough into the tart pan and place on a cookie sheet. Cover well with plastic wrap and chill at least 4 hours. 4. Bake for 13-17 minutes. Cool 30 minutes on a cooling rack. 5. Pop tarts from pans, and brush with apricot jam to glaze. Top with cream, apricots and additional pistachios.

What better way to celebrate spring than with a tea garden gathering? Put on a warm pot of tea or coffee, delectable fruit-filled desserts and set your table with boxes in a mix of potted herbs, berries and spring blooms.
HOW-TO 1. Place two plastic cups of dirt and plant small plants of herbs from your local greenhouse/ hardware store on each end of the box. 2. Fill the center of the boxes with a small wet block of green foam from your hobby store. 3. Add branches, blooms and flowers from your gardens or grocery store.
Your tables will be filled with the aroma of herbs like lavender and basil. Sprigs of mint, pansies and sweet peas tied off with twine and a name card on each plate adds a personal touch, making your spring tea gathering memorable. It's a perfect way to welcome in spring!

OUR NEWEST ELEVATE KINDNESS CHALLENGE WINNER, MIKEY’S MEALS, COMES FROM INDIAN TRAIL MIDDLE SCHOOL. Mikey’s Meals started as just a discussion between Mikey and his mom. After noticing that several kids at his school were not able to pay for a school lunch, he wanted to do something to help. He did his research and discovered that his building needed an estimated $500 a year to cover lunches for students who don’t have the funds in their account. “I knew we could find a way to give them that much money, so I started a fundraiser, and that is when Mikey’s Meals began,” he says. They raised funds for not only their school but surrounding schools in need as well. “I want all kids to have school lunch and not get embarrassed when they don’t have enough lunch money," Mikey says about why he chose this project. "Even when the school provides that student with a substitute lunch sack, people know why. With Mikey's Meals, those funds can be used to pay for that lunch so

that nobody will know who didn't have enough money.” Mikey credits a teacher and his counselor for getting excited about his project and helping him win the challenge. They are just getting started—they hope to turn Mikey's Meals into a real charitable foundation and are applying for 501(c)(3) status so that other schools around the area can take the challenge and raise money for their schools or surrounding schools in need through Mikey’s Meals. We were impressed with how Mikey chose to use his $1,000 prize. Students can use that winning money any way they choose, and instead of keeping it, Mikey donated his winnings to the Mikey’s Meals lunch fund to help students around the city. Indian Trail principal Sarah Guerrero says she was not surprised by the outpouring of support from students in her building that came together to help raise money for this project. "Our students and families are very giving," she says. "We have a very economically diverse population at Indian Trail, and all of our families give selflessly whenever a need arises, regardless of their economic situation.
