Obviously, there is a lot more that goes into creating something, but the overall theme I notice every single time is they just went for it. Honestly, this mentality can really be applied to more than just business: getting that degree, making that life change, listening to that inner voice that tells you that you are meant for so much more or that you are supposed to make an impact in an area that may be outside of your comfort zone. Whatever it may be, if it is something you are passionate about, life is too short to let it pass you by. I am a dreamer by nature and am constantly thinking of ideas and startups, but I forget about

ANY HOME RENOVATION TAKES A HEAPING HELPING OF KNOW-HOW COUPLED WITH AMBITIOUS INSPIRATION TO EFFORTLESSLY PARTNER FORM AND FUNCTION WITH EXPRESS AESTHETICS AND ELEGANCE. Arlene Ladegaard, principal designer of Design Connection Inc., helped this active family of six transform the home in which they had been living for 15 years, taking it from its late 20th-century look and beautifully ushering in a style and voice more representative of current design expressions. Known for her ability to understand the culture of design while simultaneously speaking the language of her clients, Ladegaard took to the task of going beyond just purchasing new furniture for the home. Instead, she transformed the formerly broken up spaces and created a seamless, open area for the entire family to enjoy. This required strategic space planning, along with thoughtful incorporation of flooring, light fixtures, custom furniture, countertops and all other necessary design elements to complete the project. Room by room, Ladegaard and her team incorporated a delightful series of design elements to create the desired look. This initially meant eliminating the former combination of tile, carpet and hardwood floors and replacing them with one uniform flooring element. “In order to create a design that allows the distinct living spaces to have an open feel and flow from one room into the next, we unified the main level by working from the ground up, starting with the installation of medium oak hardwood floors throughout,” Ladegaard says.

Highlights of the main floor transformation include the faux-painted cabinets with a dark brown finish in the kitchen, partnered with a gray painted island. Elegant quartz countertops, a herringbone backsplash and leather bar stools harmoniously steal the spotlight in this inviting space. The hearth room, once home to an oversized and unused sectional, has now become a conversational piece, in more ways than one. Four new chairs and a center ottoman now make this area one for genuine conversation. No TV allowed. Once an unused area, the living room is now the family gathering spot, complete with a new sectional, two swivel glider chairs and coordinating ottoman, offering more than enough seating space for the entire family.

The original fireplace was torn down to its studs, and now enjoys a framework of stacked stone and a custom mantel for the TV.  Mirrors on either side offer a beautiful reflection of the entire first-floor redesign, and the client is now more than happy to reflect on the change. “The contractors Arlene used were professional, reliable and performed high-quality work," the client says. "Her design selections were spot on, and she or her staff were on-site every step of the way. We love the new look of the total transformation."

Alimony tax deduction will cease to exist in 2019 Stange Law Firm, PC
In many divorce cases, spousal support (also known as alimony in some states) is a key issue in dispute. One party might feel as if they are unable to meet their reasonable needs without spousal support. They might claim the other spouse has the ability to help them. In 2017 the House Tax Bill proposed the removal of the alimony tax deduction. In contrast, the Tax Bill that was pending in the Senate still included the alimony tax deduction. However, the bill that ultimately made its way to the desk of President Trump was in line with the House Bill and eliminated the alimony tax deduction. This bill was signed into law by President Trump. Under the terms of bill, the alimony tax deduction will cease to exist for alimony (or spousal support or maintenance) awards entered after the end of 2018. The net effect is that there is a year period for
states to figure out what, if any, changes they will make to their alimony/maintenance laws. It could be that some states will opt to make some adjustments to the alimony/maintenance laws and formulas in light of this new tax bill. It might be that many will not end up making any changes. Regardless, the impact on how divorce cases are litigated could be significant. Under this new tax law, payors of alimony/spousal maintenance will no longer get to deduct their payments on their taxes. On the flip-end, those who receive alimony/spousal maintenance will no longer have to include the amount they receive as income on their taxes. This will, in the eyes of same, result in a windfall for those receiving alimony/ spousal maintenance. Many also theorize that payor spouses will be less inclined to pay alimony/spousal maintenance by consent. Instead, they will opt to litigate their case given the financial hit that might worry them.
Some think as well that family and divorce courts might be less inclined to enter lucrative alimony/spousal maintenance awards when the payor is no longer able to deduct it on their taxes. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how this impacts divorce cases in 2019 and beyond. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, juvenile matters, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. Stange Law Firm, PC understands the emotions that can come from a divorce or family law matter. No matter the family law issue you face, we are here to help you rebuild your life. A place that is as sensory tempting as it is abundantly satisfying and as aesthetically lovely as the carefully crafted treats are delightful. A place where anybody can enjoy a scrumptious experience, unwind in a comfortable space and engage in delicacies that seem to diminish the day’s worries with each bite or sip. This sweet magic exists at Decadent, located in Prairie Fire, and does not disappoint anyone seeking a pleasure-filled taste journey. Owner Jeff Martin is a bit of a cooking engineer who has personally developed every recipe. His inspiration came from the idea that people desire high-end desserts suitable for the finale of an exquisite five-course meal, but without the wait. Martin’s passion for sugary extravagances is evident, and his goal to create a great product at a great price point has been mastered. Decadent marked its second anniversary in November, and the accomplishment wasn't just about cupcakes and cookies. It also included the myriad of other fine confections worthy of merriment. This made-fromscratch bakery is intended to delight, and Martin explains that his methods for creating simply come down to really good flavors elevating really good desserts, and this is exactly what patrons will encounter.
"There is a reason behind the dessert," he says. "You come here to indulge; we want the experience from beginning to end to be the sweetest. It is about the decadent life, the decadent experience." In a dessert-happy world, the thing that makes Decadent unique is the sheer volume of choices and the innovative spin each delectable luxury embraces. It is also apparent that the pairings of the desserts with coffee are designed to truly complement the sweet as a sip of the pleasant gingerbread latte perfectly couples with the richness of the palate-pleasing blueberry cheesecake. If there is trouble to be found, it would be in choosing from a boundless array of temptations. The popular skillets combine a luscious cookie, brownie or doughnut with creamy gelato–smooth gelato that is also served in a variety of gratifying flavors; the mouthwatering waffles piled high with fresh toppings is suitable from morning to night; and the gourmet medley of crème brûlée are just a few examples of what Decadent has to offer. And to quench any coffee craving, this eatery utilizes an earthy blend of beans roasted locally to create fragrant cups of bliss. Martin is promoting a movement that redefines what it means to embody dessert pleasure. It is one about intermingling stellar sweets, superior sips, and serene surroundings. Desserts are a universal language, a sweet exchange, and everyone should be part of the conversation. Consider this a dulcet invitation for people of all ages to come and experience the Decadent life. "I am addicted to growing new things, new recipes," Martin says. "Desserts have never changed, it’s what you do to them and how you make it better. The wheel is already there!" 38

BROCK AND ERICA SCHULTE ARE A POWER COUPLE: HE IS THE BAR DIRECTOR AND COCKTAIL WHISPERER AT THE NEWEST COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA INSTITUTION, THE MONARCH BAR. She represents Kansas City's own favorite spirits producer, J. Rieger & Co. Together, they have a full life and loving family, making the most of all that the Kansas City area has to offer. We begged for a tipple from the couple, and they delivered with this slightly sweet, deliciously spicy libation with a hint of Paris.
INGREDIENTS:
1 ounce J. Rieger's Midwestern Dry Gin 1/2 ounce cinnamon simple syrup 1/2 ounce lemon juice 3 ounces sparkling rosé
DIRECTIONS:
1. For cinnamon simple syrup, steep one cinnamon stick with 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water. Reduce until dissolved. 2. Shake first three ingredients over ice and pour neat into a stemmed glass. Top with 3 ounces sparkling rosé.

KID ROCKER SHARES LESSONS LEARNED FROM TAKING A
CHILDLIKE APPROACH TO LIFE CHILDREN KNOW HIM AS MR. STINKY FEET, THE AWARD-WINNING KID ROCKER WHO HAS PERFORMED THOUSANDS OF HIGH-ENERGY SHOWS THROUGHOUT THE U.S., EUROPE AND HIS NATIVE KANSAS CITY OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES. But if you’re an adult, you may also know him as Jim Cosgrove, author and motivational speaker. In 2017, Cosgrove assembled a collection of his essays on parenting originally published in the Kansas City Star from 2010 to 2016, and self-published his book, Everybody Gets Stinky Feet. Through both his songs and short stories, he emphasizes that taking a childlike approach to life can make a huge difference in how we operate at home and work. Today, when he’s not writing music and working on his new album to be released later in 2018, he’s speaking to corporate groups, sharing that what’s effective for success on the playground is effective for success in the workplace. “Kids are smart, intuitive, beautiful humans who have a lot to teach us,” Cosgrove says. “After 20 years of performing for them, I’ve learned so many lessons from them about communicating honestly, being persistent and knowing my audience.” What could a businessperson learn from a child? A lesson on being fully present in the moment lies in possessing a childlike concept of time, Cosgrove says.
“KIDS DON’T BRING A LOT OF BAGGAGE WITH THEM; THEY AREN’T DISTRACTED BY THE PAST OR BY THE FUTURE,” HE SAYS.

Johnson County Lifestyle | February 2018
As a creative entrepreneur in the "gig economy," Cosgrove has built and adapted his brand over the years as the music industry, technology, his audience and family have changed. At the height of his touring career when he was performing 300 shows a year, Cosgrove traveled with his wife and two small daughters, each new road trip a family adventure. But as his own children grew, Cosgrove refocused his touring career back on the Midwest and took a corporate job for a few years. He continued to work with his own production company, recording, producing and distributing his music. And then, when it came time to publish his written work, he realized he was capable of publishing a book as well. “As a maker, things change, and you adapt. That’s how you thrive,” Cosgrove says. “What might scare some people away—there are those of us who are energized by change.” As he prepares to release his ninth album, Cosgrove contemplates the multitude of ways to get in front of an audience but returns to his belief that music is more than listening—it’s a tactile experience for both children and their parents.
"I LOVE CONNECTING WITH AUDIENCES, AND PEOPLE CRAVE CONNECTION,” COSGROVE SAYS. “WITH MILLENNIAL PARENTS, THEY WANT EXPERIENCES AND ENGAGEMENT. THEY WANT TO DO SOMETHING WITH THEIR KIDS. MY SHOWS ARE FAMILY EXPERIENCES WHERE EVERYONE GETS INVOLVED.” February 2018 | Johnson County Lifestyle

PARTING THOUGHTS
THE BUDDY TABLE PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
THIS MONTH’S WINNER OF OUR KINDNESS CHALLENGE COMES FROM CHISHOLM TRAIL MIDDLE SCHOOL. This young man created an area in his middle school lunchroom called The Buddy Table for students who may be having a bad day, need a friend or someone to talk to. All you have to do is sit at the table and, when others notice, they will soon join in. The Buddy Table is an active part of this middle school lunch room due to this student’s idea and effort to bring it to fruition. When asked why he chose to be part of our kindness challenge and why he came up with “The Buddy Table,” he responded, “The lunchroom can be a very overwhelming place for someone looking for a friend. Also, you don't always know what's going on in someone else's life, and school should be a place where everyone feels welcomed and included.” This student’s project was voted on by the community as the winning project, and as a result he was awarded $1000 from Lifestyle Publications. To find out more about our kindness challenge, Elevate, or to vote on the next round, visit JohnsonCountyLifestyle.com/Elevate. If you have a middle school student interested in participating and have questions, email Elevate@LifestylePubs.com. Our winner had one last thing to add. “I hope the Buddy Table will bring less stress and anxiety to those who feel overwhelmed in the lunchroom, and that many new friendships will form.” Congratulations to the staff and students at Chisholm Trail for supporting this idea, and if you have a middle school child with a great idea of spreading kindness and positivity in their school, we want to hear about it! Thank you to our generous sponsors at Audi Shawnee Mission and Commerce Bank.
