Letter From the Creative Director

ow that fall is upon us, the city is bustling with festivals galore, schools are back in session and hopes for a Royals postseason are high. Some of my favorite parts about this time of year besides the amazing weather include enjoying a bonfire on a crisp night, pulling out my fall sweaters, all desserts related to apples and cinnamon (who doesn’t love a good apple crisp?!) and the start of fall baseball, cross-country and soccer for my kids.

This school year brought on some big changes for our family because my oldest child started his freshman year of high school. Everyone told me that time would go fast when we were just starting our family, but I had no idea what that truly meant until now. I honestly can say it feels a bit surreal that we are already here, however we are also excited for this new season of his life. Moms of young children out there: it goes fast, so enjoy it! Our September issue is dedicated to fashion. We highlighted a few local entrepreneurs that are making a statement in the local fashion scene through their creations. Many of them sell their locally sourced products right here in KC, so check them out and see where to find their products around town. We also wanted to formally introduce you all to our newest contributor, Becky from the Cella Jane Blog. She is a local resident and blogger from right here in Johnson County but shares her fashion and style choices with hundreds of thousands of followers from all over the country. You can read more about her and her involvement in the fashion community in her full feature article inside. We are excited to add her to our Lifestyle team.

hat began with a desire to update a family room turned into an entire first-floor remodeling project. After

Arlene Ladegaarrd, owner and principal designer of Design Connection Inc., met with the owners of this Leawood home to discuss the project, she assessed the family’s needs were not being effectively met with the current first floor plan and came up with a design to fully maximize the living room, kitchen and hearth room areas while harmoniously partnering it with eye-catching aesthetics. As a result, the family enjoys several inviting living spaces that previously were rarely used and are now the focus of family and fun. Known for her logistical prowess when designing a space, Ladegaard functionally and aesthetically solved the limited storage and seating issues as she and her team reconfigured the kitchen to include an eat-in island that comfortably seats six, allowing for additional storage and seating around the perimeter of the space. Upgraded cabinetry built to last and appliances update the look while simultaneously providing balance to the space.

“ We are using rooms we never spent time in.”

AFTER BEFORE

Originally too dominating for its location, the former brick fireplace in the living room was replaced with stacked stone and scaled to a more accommodating size, while the previous furnishings were replaced with a large sectional and extra lounge chair just for dad! Instead of being used as simply a pass-through to the kitchen area, this is now a popular gathering spot for this active family of six, swinging the pendulum back to its original intention. Additionally, the hearth room fireplace was given a facelift to brighten the space. “We are so appreciative to Arlene and all her staff for their dedication and professionalism they displayed while working on the project,” the homeowner says. “As Arlene predicted, we are using rooms we never had spent time in.”

individuality,

embraces distinctive style and promotes personal truth. Strongly influenced by artists such as A$AP Rocky, Jimi Hendrix and Anthony Kiedis, Koch pulls fashion inspiration from their ability to represent themselves with 100 percent honesty. Simply because they are not wearing clothes for the masses, but rather dress based on whatever style they have developed, this premise has awakened a desire for 21-year-old Koch to create a clothing line that truly represents comfort, distinction and a sense of rebellion.

20

Johnson County Lifestyle | September 2017

THE VISION Growing up, Koch participated in several sports while attending Olathe schools and found a passion within basketball, becoming a standout performer. While on his athletic journey, there was a stirring within that prompted him to explore the world of clothing design, but basketball came first. Following graduation, he entered William Jewell as a student athlete and an entrepreneurial and business administration major. Although he was not enrolled in a school with fashion design courses, Koch was eager to explore this arena, and during his sophomore year, he got the opportunity with Landon Young, creativity and innovation professor. In this elective, he was required to complete an independent study project and he saw this as his time to investigate the ins and outs of clothing. He had a vision and Young helped him figure it all out.

"HE BELIEVED IN ME AND BOUGHT ME THE MATERIALS I NEEDED TO MAKE IT HAPPEN," KOCH SAYS. "I STAYED UP LATE AT NIGHT, WATCHING YOUTUBE VIDEOS, TEACHING MYSELF. I HAD NEVER SEWN UP TO THIS POINT, AND SOME OF THE FIRST JEANS I MADE WERE TERRIBLE, BUT I STUCK WITH IT, AND IT HAS PROBABLY BEEN THE MOST IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE I’VE HAD TO DATE." That semester, Koch not only designed 10 garments, he also discovered a predilection for building his own brand.

THE CLOTHING LINE Now entering his senior year of college and in his final year playing a collegiate sport, Koch is poised to launch his line, Easton K. clothing. His brand is centered around a style that can fit into many areas but is unique to Kansas City. It is high-quality menswear with classic silhouettes that celebrate individual panache. He has put such thought into every jacket, pant, hat and T-shirt that it feels as if each were created as a personal canvas just waiting for each buyers’ specific flair. He even has put meticulous thought into custom hangers, tissue paper and thank you cards, and delivers them in a box with each purchaser’s name which fosters a full collective appeal. It is a testament that reflects the many hours Koch has labored and further exemplifies his dedicated work ethic as a student, athlete and young designer.

WHERE SOHO MEETS JOCO

When it comes to hair, we’re experts, we’re nerds and we’re not afraid to try something new, are you? We believe that style trumps fashion. Hair looks best when it’s tailored to suit you.

We love natural texture. Straight, curly, or in between, we want to help you enhance it, control it, come to terms with it and maybe even make peace with it.

We’re all about hair color. Whether it’s believable or unbelievable, we think about, dream about and fantasize about hair color. If you want highlights that are barely a whisper, or a vivid color that screams for attention, we can help your hair find it’s voice.

CELLA JANE (CON TI N U ED)

"I was really passionate about making imagery, ads and beautiful websites to attract people to the businesses," she says. "I worked from home, so I had the flexibility to explore my passion and start my blog in a part-time setting. I didn't go to school for fashion—I had just always loved it. I knew how to brand really well, so that's what helped me start off.” It's easy to see why readers of all ages can connect to Cella Jane. "I share my life and what I've experienced with motherhood, my favorite health and fitness tips, and my family," Hillyard says. "I got married, had a baby and I shared it all on my blog, so it's not just fashion—it evolves as my life evolves. I think it's pretty relatable for women as they grow." Hillyard is all about family, with support and inspiration found right at home in Johnson County with her husband, Michael, and children, Sutton and Greyson. "My husband is my No. 1 supporter. He was the one that pushed me to get started, attend events and do certain things that were outside of my realm. He's a huge fan and does so much work, shooting about 60 percent of our content," she says. "As for as my children, they don't know they support me with it, but they do because they are a part of what I share. They teach me so much in life and in motherhood, and I get to share that with my readers. Doing fashion shoots with Sutton is my favorite—we get an excuse to dress up and go on mommy-daughter dates. My parents and sisters are very supportive as well. My sisters both loved the blog so much that they've started their own, and we're all supportive of each other. They're growing and learning from me, so it's fun working and sharing that similarity with them." Hillyard's focus is on attainable style, hand selecting each and every item with the everyday woman in mind.

"MY STYLE IS CASUAL CHIC, MORE SO ON THE CASUAL SIDE. I LIKE TO ADD UNEXPECTED THINGS, LIKE WEARING A REALLY NICE DRESS WITH SNEAKERS, OR THROWING ON A LEATHER JACKET OVER SOMETHING THAT'S REALLY FEMININE," HILLYARD SAYS. "I STILL LOVE HIGH-END, BUT WITH A CASUAL COOL MIX. IT'S NOT YOUR EVERYDAY LEGGINGS AND SWEATSHIRT OR JEANS AND A TOP, BUT IT'S SOMETHING DIFFERENT." Cella Jane has taken Hillyard many places. She has worked with fashion brands and labels including Nordstrom, Nike, Free People, Coach, Kendra Scott, Kate Spade and Macy’s, and has been featured in InStyle magazine, People StyleWatch and Marie Claire. "When the opportunity presents itself, I love working with brands and going to

different destinations," she says. "I think it really opens up a lot more to my blog and my brand when I'm traveling or working with different brands." Blogging is a hobby for most, but for Hillyard, it's a serious business. CONTINUED >

How to prove parental alienation Stange Law Firm, PC

Parental alienation is a term in which more people are becoming familiar with. In lots of situations, individuals might allege that parental alienation is taking place. In many of these situations, the parents in a custody case might allege that the children do not like them and do not want to be around them. When they are around the kids, they might allege that the other parent has poisoned the minds of the children somehow. There is no question that parental alienation can happen. Unfortunately, there are certain situations where the minds of the children can be poisoned over time about the other parent. Parental alienation oftentimes takes quite a bit of time. It does not happen quickly. But over time, the one parent might say and do things to the children that cause the children not to like the parent to an extreme degree. Having said that, parental alienation

is still not something that takes place often. It really takes a lot of comments, statements and actions to take place for the children to truly be alienated from the other parent. Parental alienation should not be confused with realistic estrangement where the actions of the parent might be so severe that they cause the children to be estranged from them. In some cases, it might be hard to tell out of the gates whether there is parental alienation or realistic estrangement taking place. In terms of how to prove parental alienation where it is alleged, it often requires a custody evaluation. During a full custody evaluation, a psychologist might be able to get enough information to render an opinion about parental alienation. Getting enough information for a custody evaluation often requires examining school and medical records. It often requires interviews with the children, the parties to the custody case and other individuals with relevant information. Additionally, it often requires psychological testing and perhaps a

DEBRA SMITH

ARTICLE MARK J. SPENCER PHOTOGRAPHY TRAVIS CARROLL

G

rowing up in Hannibal, Missouri, Debra Smith was surrounded by creativity. Both her grandmother and mother provided material inspiration that would ultimately

lead Debra to her career as a textile artist. Smith's grandmother wove rag rugs and her mother wove textiles using a traditional Navajo loom. It was no surprise that when it came time to go to college that Smith would attend art school. Her portfolio for admission to the Kansas City Art Institute included many nontraditional materials from the Hannibal Arts Council workshops that she attended as a child—everything from cyanotypes to raku pottery made in a backyard fire pit.

34

Johnson County Lifestyle | September 2017

While studying at KCAI, Smith began weaving her now popular and much sought-after silk sakiori scarves. One afternoon Fifi White, co-founder of Asiatica, dropped off some kimono remnants for the students to use as art material in their work. A few weeks later, White returned to KCAI and purchased some of Smith's completed work in a student sale. White then showed them to Elizabeth Wilson, the other co-founder of Asiatica. Wilson instantly recognized the kimono fabric as part of their KCAI donation, and Smith’s longtime connection to Asiatica was formed. Smith’s career as studio artist began soon after her graduation from KCAI in 1993 when, at the invitation of John O’Brien, she began showing her work at the Dolphin Gallery. The pieces from that period were made primarily from the silk kimono fabric lining that was too thin of a fabric for Asiatica to make garments. Smith was drawn CONTINUED >

Over the years, through scouring the Garment District in New York and attending private kimono sales around the world, she has been able to introduce more color to her artistic palette. During the 10 years that she lived in New York, she began showing nationally and internationally. She has shown her work at the Rijswijk Museum in the Netherlands, the Davidson Gallery in Australia and numerous national exhibitions. Currently, she is an artist-in-residence at Studio Inc. in Kansas City, a nonprofit arts organization that provides studio space, professional development, networking and exhibitions for mid-career artists in Kansas City. ickel & Suede creates lightweight leather earrings and accessories designed with the active woman

in mind. These handmade, modern and casual statement pieces were founded on the belief that jewelry should be both comfortable and stylish. Soren and Kilee Nickel, the husband and wife dream team behind Nickel & Suede, built their leather goods business from the ground up. "I was looking for a pair of gold earrings to wear with my outfit. I always wore large silver teardrop earrings, but couldn’t find a gold version," Kilee says. "We had purchased some gold leather and had the idea to make a pair of earrings out of it that had a similar look to the hammered silver metal earrings I already wore, so I was very pleased when they turned out just like I hoped. I realized not only did they accomplish the look I was going for, but they were functional. I forgot I was even wearing earrings because the leather was just so comfortable. I found myself mowing the lawn and not even realizing they were still in!" The first few sets of teardrop earrings were made within weeks of the original pair. After telling readers about the idea on her blog, ONE little MOMMA, they sold quite a few pairs in the following months, deciding to brand the product as its own business. In June 2014, their website went live. "From the beginning, I have been the eye for design, and Soren has been our processes and quality control guy," Kilee says. "He has been involved since the first pair, and actually quit his accounting job the day NickelAndSuede.com launched. It was scary but exciting! We were blessed to be able to replace his income in our first month, and we’ve never looked back!"

There are numerous things that make Nickel & Suede unique. "Our idea for leather earrings had never before been executed in this way. We took the most classic, universal and flattering earring shape and made it with a material that actually gives it a function," she says. "We’ve made statement earrings comfortable. Most of our customers tell us they never wear anything else after trying our product." Customers trust that Nickel & Suede's quality products will elevate their style while still being functional and long-lasting. "We’ve been relentless in making the process scalable, high-quality, and well done right here in Kansas City," Kilee says. "Last year, we moved out of our basement into a production building. We have over 20 local employees that do everything from making and shipping the product, working our store and answering customer service inquiries. We don’t ever plan on outsourcing production, and we’re proud of the unique quality factory environment we’ve created." Earrings are their overall most popular item, but they also sell chokers, leather cuffs, rings and apparel. "Lip Gloss, Metallic Gold and Stone Cut-Outs are our most popular earrings," she says. "Our London Tan Cut-Out earrings and London Tan Wrap Cuff are also best-sellers. This year we came out with our new shape, the Gem, and it has quickly moved into a best-seller spot in all colors." The Nickels' are proving the sky's the limit.

"We plan to continue changing lives with our leather earrings, but we’re also excited to add more product," Kilee says. "We see ourselves evolving into a lifestyle brand that could include everything from jewelry holders, more apparel, men’s products and even home goods. We’d love to expand our stores and open another location in Kansas City as well as other cities around the country." Shop at 111 N. Water St. in Liberty, Missouri, or shop online at NickelAndSuede.com

Principal and Financial Advisor at Allos Investment Advisors and Searcy Financial Services a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm

Millennials are a generation that love to share (almost) everything. We’re very transparent about our lives, from photographing each activity we do throughout the day, checking into the places we visit (even the doctor!) and leaving reviews of our experiences. The one thing we’ve been bred to not be transparent about is our finances. Now, this may be a benefit in a social setting; nobody likes the obnoxious friend who brags about his salary and high-end purchases, but this reservation must be overcome for relationships that are heading toward marriage. Being engaged myself, I know how valuable discussions about money can be and how being upfront can alleviate headache and maybe even heartache in the future. The earlier you and your significant other can discuss and plan for your financial life, the better off you may be. A 2017 survey shows that 53 percent of Americans ages 25 to 34 claim financial worries have a negative effect on their relationships. When both partners are open and transparent and can work through situations together, it can lead to healthier relationships. Here are some questions and prompts to start your financial discussion:       

Discuss Your Money Script – How did your family handle finances growing up? What worked well and what didn’t? How does that impact how you handle your own finances? Be Transparent – Discuss your current financial situation by disclosing all assets, debt and financial obligations. Do you have student loans to pay off? Are you expecting an inheritance? Determine Your Financial Goals – What are each of your financial goals? How does your income, debt, and investments hinder or help you reach those goals? Will sacrifices need to be made? Talk About Kids – Children make a big impact on your financial situation. Do you want to have children? Will they be natural children or do you want to adopt? Equal Contribution vs. Equal Income – Do you have high income disparity? What does equal contribution look like for you outside of equal financial contribution to the family? Will one person earn income while the other manages the household? Consider a Prenup – Will you merge your finances or keep things separate? Will some assets or debt be considered marital and others non-marital? Even if you don’t have a lot of assets currently, the agreement can cover you in the future. Budgeting – What method will you use to build and track your budget? How often will you “check in” on how well you’re doing and make adjustments?

My fiancé and I are both dedicated to being open and transparent when it comes to discussing financial matters and both having an understanding of what the other manages when the duties are divided. We both handle making sure the bills are paid by dividing them up, but either could take over in a time of need. I take the lead on estate planning and insurance purposes but she knows how to contact our advisors and get things done in my absence. If you and your partner are not on the same financial wavelength, consider using the discussion points above to start a healthy dialogue about your situation. If having an advisor lead you through sounds beneficial, call me at 913.948.7788 and we’ll talk about strategies for helping you plan for and reach your financial goals as a couple.
