Life moves very fast these days. Between juggling schedules for multiple children, personal commitments, professional commitments, and squeezing in some “metime”, the need for flexibility in our lives as moms is crucial. It’s crucial for happiness, yes, but sometimes it’s crucial just for existence. It’s no wonder that so many women are taking their careers and finances into their own hands and building businesses that allow for this flexibility. The Survey of Business Owners data shows that 9.9 million US firms are women-owned, they’re generating $1.4 billion in receipts, and nearly 90 percent are nonemployer firms. Mom-bosses are following their passions, doing it for themselves, doing it for their families, and succeeding in ways they always knew were possible. As a mom doing all these things myself, I am sharing my top financial tips for the savvy mom-bosses out there:

1. Cultivate Your Tribe – One thing I’ve noticed about female entrepreneurs is that many seek motivation and strive to provide motivation for others. The positive energy that comes from sharing stories and experiences with others is valuable, so take advantage of groups that exist to cultivate this energy. Whether it’s a local group or one like the National Association of Women Business Owners, developing your tribe of like-minded business professionals can give you access to resources that help you continue to grow. 2. Find Your Balance – When you run your own business, creating balance can fly out the window. You may be running your life from your cell phone (which doesn’t shut off unless you make it), your vehicle becomes your office and your social events become business networking. If you never stop working, you may miss out on the things you’re actually working to secure. Your business probably won’t fail if you take half a day to volunteer at your kids’ school or shut your phone off by 8pm. By finding your balance, you may find you have greater energy to run your business when you are focused on work.

3. Develop Long-Term Goals – Equal income earners may find it easier to work toward long-term financial goals than those who are earning supplemental income for their family. When you are earning supplemental income, you may think more short-term about your earnings, such as making enough to cover private school tuition for your child or fund a family vacation. However, your earnings are still important for reaching your long-term financial goals so setting them and working to fulfill those goals is vital. Insure Your Replacement Value – Not only is your income important to your family, but the work you do as a mother has significant value. You provide care, transportation, home maintenance, meals, and the list goes on. When put in dollar terms, the salary of a mother can be worth $100,000+. This would be a significant loss if something happened to you, so make sure your family is covered for your loss. 5. Invest – Choosing how to invest your money relies on a balance between your risk tolerance and your financial goals. Investing may seem overwhelming, but you can start by asking questions to get a better understanding of how your money is working for you. Do you understand what you’re investing in – not just specific companies, but different asset classes as well? Do you understand how each of these investment sectors make money? Are you proactively making tactical changes in your portfolio when the financial environments change? ith summer in full swing, my house has become a revolving door of neighbor kids and friends coming and going, continual trips to the grocery store, campouts in the backyard (by the way, birds start chirping at 4:00 a.m.) and baseball, baseball and more baseball. It seems like no matter how hard I try to keep our summers from filling up with too much busyness so that we can enjoy the relaxed schedule, it always has a way of flying by. It feels like summer just started, and here we are at July already. How can it be?! I usually start my summer off with a bucket list of activities to accomplish. The list consists of a mix of fun activities we do as a family every summer, new places we want to try and lofty goals of summer enrichment for my kids. I hate to admit it, but we generally only get to about half of the list, and the summer enrichment goals are often times not as enriching as I originally dreamed up. However, it seems like the things that are unplanned like a spontaneous early morning walk with one of my kids or a pickup game of one-on-one basketball with my son ends up being the moments I treasure most. The older my kids get, the more I want to make every summer count and to be filled with fun memories, big or small. One of the best things about summer is grilling out and all the fresh summer foods. We wanted to share a few favorite summer recipes with you in this issue, as well as a couple of easy homemade ice cream recipes for a treat on a hot summer night. We may have polished off the ice cream after shooting the food spread, so speaking from experience, that strawberry ice cream is amazing. Plus, it is easy to adapt the recipe to be dairy-free if needed. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many great things our city has to offer in the summer months and that you make memories with those around you that you love.

1. In a bowl, mix strawberries, sugar, honey and lemon juice and let sit for 15-20 minutes. 2. After 20 minutes, mash strawberry mixture with a potato masher or fork till the large chunks are broken up. For ice cream without chunks, puree the strawberry mixture in a blender. 3. Next, add heavy whipping cream, half-and-half and vanilla extract to the mixture. Pour into your ice cream maker and let churn for 15-20 minutes.

4. Eat soft right away or place in freezer safe container for 3-4 hours to set.

1. Finely grate zest from two limes. Half and juice all the limes, and measure out 1/2 cup juice. Save any additional juice for serving. 2. Whisk sugar into lime juice. Next, whisk in remaining ingredients. 3. Pour mixture into ice cream maker and churn for 20 minutes or until thick. Pack into a plastic container, cover and freeze firm one or more hours.

Readers appreciate that it’s an easy read with good advice, and Lettiann hopes it reminds people to slow down and savor the memories made around a good meal. “Food brings back memories and creates new memories, so even when I was most homesick, I could make meals that reminded me of when I would eat with my extended family. There’s power in that. People don’t eat together anymore. It’s a necessity, not an event. Communication in the family happens at meal times, which only takes 30 minutes a day. I grew up with it, and I feel badly not everyone does that.” Those who like tried-and-true recipes will find a feast of them within the book. Lettiann Southerland is widely recognized among her friends and family as a truly excellent cook. Of the included recipes, her favorite is the diced pork sauce with polenta. “It’s off the charts! It’s my Aunt Letty’s recipe from when my brothers and I were kids.” But Southerland doesn’t want any kitchen-impaired folks frightened at the thought of having to concoct elaborate meals. “Even if you’re ordering a pizza, have people gather around your table,” she urges. “Visit and get to know each other. Ever the entrepreneur, she recently unveiled her own boutique firm, Lettiann & Associates Real Estate Services LLC, based in Leawood. “My forte is a listing agent, as I love to negotiate,” she says. “I’m a full-time realtor with an emphasis on service. I give clients 150 percent and revel in the fact that no two deals are ever the same. I love meeting new people and helping them find a ‘home that cooks.’” Among the most important ingredients for making a house a true home? “I believe it’s spending time with family and friends—and what better place than sharing a meal at a table? It doesn’t matter what that meal is. Just gather and enjoy!”

Does an affair matter in divorce? Stange Law Firm, PC

With the advent of no fault divorce, many think that fault no longer matters. As it relates to divorce, the viewpoint is that an affair does not matter at all. Some think that courts will look at it and give it no weight. In the end, the view is everything is going to be divided in half anyway. Child support and maintenance is going to be what it is. And in terms of child custody, many think an affair is irrelevant. Is this correct? The reality is that this viewpoint is not accurate in many states. It is true that to get divorced, parties do not have to show fault for a divorce to be granted. Prior to the advent of no fault divorce, parties would have to show fault like an affair, abandonment, emotional cruelty, violence or some other fault of some kind to get divorced.

But with no fault divorce, that is no longer required. The exact language varies by state, but generally speaking, parties simply have to show that a marriage is irretrievably broken to get divorced. However in terms of marital property and debt division, and spousal maintenance (alimony), many states still allow the conduct of the parties as one of the factors in terms of making that determination. States like Missouri and Kansas fall into that category. However, Illinois excludes fault as a consideration by statute. But in terms of child custody, an affair could still have an effect in most states, as long as it has a bearing on the best interests of the children. In cases where an affair can be pointed to having a negative impact on the children and their custody or parenting time with either parent, an affair could still be looked at for custody and parenting
