Letter from the Creative Director

his month we are featuring beautiful homes in the area that reflect different styles of design. Whether it be modern, contemporary, farmhouse, vintage or traditional, interior design is multifaceted and can change the feel and mood of a space. The clean, sleek lines of modern feels fresh and professional, whereas a vintage or farmhouse style gives a feeling of warmth, character and history. If you are anything like me, you may enjoy and appreciate several different styles of design. I tend to gravitate toward farmhouse, but I also love pops of modern and industrial. I have a slight obsession with redecorating and love to find ways to reinvent a space. Sometimes it's as easy as changing out the colors in a room and other times it's a complete overhaul. Thankfully, my patient husband usually plays along with the remodeling projects I get myself into at home. I am a DIYer by nature and love to rehab homes and repurpose furniture. Having a dad as a contractor is great because he taught all of us how to do some light remodeling, so it is in my blood. My husband and I used to rehab homes, and It was so fun to walk into a house and dream about how we wanted to transform the space into something new. It’s amazing what new paint, fresh finishes and knocking down a wall or two can do for your space. Now that I have four children, those days of flipping homes are behind me, but I still love looking through magazines of beautiful interior design to get inspiration for a possible future project. I loved so many of the ideas in the homes we featured this month. I hope you enjoy looking at the art of their design and maybe you will walk away with a new idea or two.

Midwest that choice is often comfort foods, brimming with satisfying starches and savory traditions. There's nothing wrong with these treats, but what if seafood is the mission? Particularly authentic, fresh and superb seafood? This may seem like a culinary fantasy best left for a visit to a breezy coastal eatery. Fortunately, those wonderings are no more! rmed with an undertaking to get coastal quality seafood to the middle of the country, Jax was founded in 1994 in Boulder, Colorado. This quaint 65 seat dining room promised to provide its patrons with a genuine seafood experience combined with a high-spirited atmosphere. Jax successfully delivered just that by giving customers both authenticity and freshness that seemed to be missing from this genre of dining. Fast-forward and this accomplishment has evolved into a conglomerate of restaurants housed within the Colorado cities of Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins and Glendale. Then in 2014, Jax opened its doors in Kansas City, the first location outside of Colorado. Each restaurant is meticulously planned to take into consideration the customer, the ambiance and the staff. "Each kitchen has a different chef, and thereby a different focus that is a more perfect fit for their individual communities. The personality of each store is special and that are run as wholly separate entities. All floor plans, sizes and proportions are different. KC is one of a kind," owner Adam Reed explains. It is through thoughtful organization, a keen awareness of customer cravings and an aura that highlights the total experience that Jax has become a sought-after place to dine. Jax prides itself on its innovative menu and willingness to experiment with tastes in efforts to bring the best culinary experience to its diners. Although some menu items are common in all their restaurants—the calamari, crab cake, gumbo and their distinctive oyster shucking technique—there are other items specifically chosen for the Kansas City location, and their menu is always evolving and chefdriven. Recently the restaurant has begun hosting a Sunday brunch perfect for the more relaxed weekends of this bustling city. This brunch provides a bounty of delectable snow and Dungeness crab along with an abundance of tasty sides. Outside of a menu that highlights incredible seafood, executed almost seamlessly is their food and drink pairings. Known for its enticing oysters, Jax partners them with a delicious porter or robust stout including brands such as Guinness and Buffalo Sweat from Tallgrass Brewing in Manhattan, Kansas. And if wine is the fancy, they

his fixer-upper was purchased six years ago and completely renovated from top to bottom by the homeowners. The home sits on five acres, so they call it their farmette and wanted to incorporate a little farm style into the home. The homeowners are also drawn to modern so hints of modern dĂŠcor and finishes can be seen throughout.Â

"I like to call my style of decorating 'modern farmhouse' if there is even such a thing. I wanted to merge my love of both styles, and the finished product is something I feel reflects just that," the homeowner says. Three years ago, they totally remodeled the kitchen. Walls down. Ceiling down. They replaced a very small, dark kitchen with less cabinets, open shelves and white paint. They chose a Caesarstone that resembled Carrara marble and topped the large island with a dark Caesarstone and a farm sink. The flooring also had to be replaced so they left the hickory unstained to show its natural beauty. This year they remodeled the en suite bathroom, once again taking all walls down. The freestanding tub adds character and charm and custom-built glass-fronted cabinets finish off the look. "Slowly this house is becoming our dream farmhouse—in the city."

he wallcoverings unbound by scale are also free from geographic constraint. Porter Teleo can be found in highend designers’ offices and showrooms from New York to LA. Designs are frequently featured in Elle Décor, House Beautiful and Architectural Digest and in notable locations such as Gwen Stefani’s personal home, interior designer Kelly Wearstler’s office and the New York Palace Hotel. “It’s such a gift to be able to take something from a grain of inspiration all the way through development and then see it inspiring other creative people as they use it to bring their own 36

visions to life in projects,” says KC-native interior designer Bridgett Cochran, who came together with artist and friend Kelly Porter to form Porter Teleo. Porter is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute and the State University of New York whose large abstract paintings and works on paper have been on display in galleries and through dealers throughout the country for 20 years. “The idea that wallcovering itself can be just as handmade and unique as the large, abstract paintings I create really appeals to me artistically,” Porter says.

“In our Palace Hotel installations, our abstract painting is seen and enjoyed by thousands of people every day because of the location.” Despite their rise in popularity, Porter and Cochran continue to be highly involved in the creative process and in creating each original pattern. They finalize all design and palette details in advance and then employ a team of highly skilled artists to create yardby-yard of wallcoverings and fabrics using the most beautiful papers, fabrics and richest hand-mixed pigments available. Much of their line is based on abstract expressionist art, nature and the age-old art of Japanese woodblock printing. “I think that Kelly [Porter] and I share an interest in the beauty of imperfection and an awareness of the space where art and design meet,” Cochran says. “Our process is very collaborative and based on a strong level of trust for one another’s aesthetic judgment.” As their designs disseminate throughout the world, the entrepreneurs value their ability to contribute to the arts in Kansas City. “I think that it’s so imperative to keep a wellrounded artistic environment in every city,” Porter says. “And businesses who build strong culture and creativity in our city are so vital.” March 2017 | Johnson County Lifestyle

uestion: Homeowners are often unsure if they should move or spend money to update their current home. “Will renovating my home be worth the money,” they ask? “Will updating to today’s styles increase the value of my home enough?” Answer: The truth is that it all depends on the updates you choose. Paint, flooring, countertops and cabinets that reflect the current trends are a must when marketing your home for resale. However, depending on your area and the current housing market, a major renovation may not bring you an immediate return on your efforts. This featured home was built 12 years ago by a family who has since grown out of their home’s Tuscan-style design. They longed for a more transitional style with a design that made better use of their first floor. They contemplated selling and moving into a new home, but they love the friends they’ve made and the schools that are in their current neighborhood. Thinking Differently About Retirement By Marc C. Shaffer, CFP®, AIF®, EA

The idea of retirement and the reality of retirement can often be drastically different. For many people, retirement is the idea that at a certain age you will leave your career and enter into a life of leisure. Be it golfing, visiting sunny locations or spending time with grandchildren, retirement has been painted as the final phase of life where you haven’t a care in the world. Every day I talk with people who are retired or planning their retirement, and let me tell you, it’s time we start thinking differently about retirement. The “what you want to do” and “how much you’re going to need” may look a lot different than you’re prepared for. Let’s look at 5 types of retirement styles I talk about frequently:

1. Full Traditional Retirement – This form of retirement most closely resembles the way many people think of retirement. You circle a date on the calendar on or after your “normal retirement age” as it relates to Social Security to exit the workforce and don’t look back. Financial Considerations: Traditional retirement generally requires you to save early and often to reach the amount needed for your “nest egg.” Review your budget frequently and your retirement needs every 3 years, or as major changes arise, so you stay on track during your working years. 2. Early Retirement – Early retirement can be defined as retiring any time prior to the “normal retirement

age” and remaining out of the workforce. Financial Considerations: With less years to save for retirement, a strategy for generating income from your investments in retirement will be important. Before you’re eligible to take withdrawals from your 401(k) or receive Social Security, plan how you will support your cash flow needs. If you’re not receiving healthcare benefits, plan for managing those costs.

3. Transitional Retirement – In this scenario, you find people continuing to do the same job they’ve always

done, but working less and less time. They may cut down to 3 days per week, then 1, before ultimately exiting the workplace for good. This is a good fit for people who enjoy their career but want less stress or time commitment. Financial Considerations: If you earn enough by continuing to work, consider not touching your “nest egg” so it can continue to grow while your income covers your expenses. Review your contract to see which benefits will remain or be removed as you reduce your hours.

4. Working in Retirement – This scenario differs from a transitional retirement in that you may choose another job or part time job than you’ve previously had. It could be one that comes with less money and less stress, but still allows you to remain active in the workforce. Financial Considerations: As with transitional retirement, does this allow you to cover your expenses without touching your “nest egg?” Continuing to bring in income may allow you to reduce your investment withdrawal rate or even save more to prepare for full retirement down the road. 5. Temporary Retirement/Sabbatical – This type of retirement can happen in many ways, such as making enough money to retire at a young age, spending your potentially healthiest and active years following a dream, and then returning to the workforce later in life. Or, it could mean taking smaller, frequent breaks during your working years by choice or to serve a need such as caring for a child or family member. Financial Considerations: How will you stay valuable? Consider taking on training during these breaks so you are still highly trained and desirable when you re-enter the workforce. You may have to live below your means during your working years to sustain yourself during non-working years. Your retirement does not have to look like everyone else’s to be successful. When you start to consider alternatives that you hadn’t realized were possible, you are met with greater flexibility for living the type of life that works best for you.
