I PLAN, So That I Can __________
By Marc C. Shaffer, CFP®, AIF®, EA Principal at Searcy Financial, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm I’ll admit, I can get caught up in over-working and over-scheduling, so I have to prioritize the things that are important to me or else they might get overlooked. One of my top priorities is discovering the world through international travel, and if you were to look at my financial plan, you would see that priority front and center.
Travel wasn’t always part of my plan. For many years, my mentor would invite me on international trips, but I always had an excuse of not having enough time or money budgeted and promised that I’d make the next one. I began to realize that if I kept saying no and making excuses, I would end up doing nothing and going nowhere. After I gave in and took my first trip, I realized how many experiences I had passed up and I wouldn’t let that happen again. As a financial planner, I know how easy it is for people to spend their life working and not taking time for the things they love. If we don’t prioritize our time, attention and money on the things that matter, we can speed through life hoping that we’ll have time for these important things in the end. I try to help people refocus on their priorities, find out what’s most important to them and understand their goals, and then we build their financial plan in a way that helps them enjoy their entire life rather than hoping to enjoy it “someday.” Because I plan for an international trip every year, I set aside money each month so that I have the cost covered by the time the trip arrives. Both through my experience and research, I know approximately how much I will need each year to make this happen, so I divide that amount into 12 so I know how much to set aside each month. You may not always know the exact cost of the goals you’re planning for, but we can make reasonable assumptions that can factor into your budget. People always ask me what my favorite experiences have been when they hear about my trips. I’m sure you’d expect to hear things like reaching the top of Machu Picchu or the Great Wall of China. While the location specific adventures are ones I’ll never forget, the best experiences have been of a different nature. The friendships I’ve made with my travel mates and people I met in different countries, the things I’ve learned about my physical abilities during long hikes or challenging travel, and seeing how different cultures all value security, friendship and family have been some of the most rewarding experiences from my travels. While I could have spent the money on some expensive item that might now be found in the bottom of a drawer, I instead spent it on experiences and memories that I’ll have forever. Several of my trips have been with Adventure to Serve, a group that plans trips combining adventure travel with service projects. Jared & Stacy Anderson, who own the company shared, “Just because you have a passport and plane ticket doesn't mean you'll come back different in some way. But, if you are open to new experiences, curious about people and new cultures, and willing to get out of your comfort zone, travel can be life changing. It broadens your understanding of the world, promotes empathy for others, often causes you to reflect on your own values and current choices in life--providing you a great opportunity to reevaluate what's important to you, and how you want to spend your time and money. We've also found that travel tends to expand your desire to make a real impact in the world, which again, results in reflecting on where your life is now and where you really want to be.”
What are the most important things in your life? Is your financial plan designed to allow you to spend time focusing on those things? I would be happy to help you PLAN, so that you can __________ (how do you want to fill in the blank?)

NOVEMBER 2017

o many moments happen around a kitchen. It is a gathering place for families and friends to eat, drink and talk about life. For my family, it’s the spot we always seem to congregate in, and food is the central part of almost every get-together.Food was important to both sides of my family growing up, and the gourmet dishes that my Newman grandmother created would, I believe, impress even professional chefs. She had a gift with food, and the presentation was nothing short of an artistic masterpiece.

My granddad on the other side of my family also liked to cook, but he was more of a “fry some eggs up in some bacon grease” kind of guy. One of my most treasured memories revolves around enjoying food with my granddad. He lived a few blocks away from my childhood home, and we always knew he was good for having a fresh cake sitting on his counter. The cake wasn’t anything special—just a box cake with canned frosting, but that was one of my favorite things to sit and eat with him. I always knew I could walk over to his house, sit at his table and enjoy a huge piece of cake, cold glass of milk and just talk about nothing or everything. My dad stopped by his house every day on his lunch break to have a “sliver” (or two or three) of cake with my grandpa too, and sometimes I would try and time it so I would be there around the same time. It was such a simple thing, but those visits were so meaningful to me. As I got older, my granddad would invite my husband and me over for dinner quite often as he lived alone, and most times he made his famous “old lady pork chops;" they were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I always knew a piece of his famous box cake and a cup of coffee on the porch would be the grand finale. Still, to this day, I can’t eat a box cake or even walk past the cake mix aisle at the grocery store without thinking of my granddad. When he passed, I got his platter that he served those “old lady pork chops” on, and it is one of my most treasured possessions, cracks and all. It’s funny that even the simplest foods can hold such significance and nostalgia. Sitting around the table and enjoying a meal or traditional family recipe can create such lasting memories. Sometimes the food is the memory but often for me, it was the moments spent while sharing a meal that stuck. For our food issue, we wanted to highlight some of our favorite local chefs. It was our pleasure to get to learn a little more about them and to share with you their passion for food. Enjoy, and I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

“I became acquainted with Cornerstone Bank while in the process of building my business. They came highly recommended from a friend. John Doull, the president of the bank, and Michelle Guthrie, the senior vice president, met with me in person and reviewed my business plan thoroughly. They provided me with valuable advice and they found a number of ways that my plan was actually calling for more lending money than was necessary. While this is my first experience as a business owner, my impression is that most banks would try to over-lend in an effort to obtain higher interest. This made an impression on me and I have to say, on a personal note, that I find that John and Michelle have my best interests at heart. They are honest and loyal to their customers.
Dr. Leslie Michaud - Motus Biologics
I chose to service my small business loan with Cornerstone Bank and it was the best decision I’ve made. I have personal service that I would certainly not get with a larger bank. Subsequently, it was an easy decision to transfer my personal accounts (checking and money market) to Cornerstone as well.”

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF SWING HOW I WENT FROM A 30 HANDICAP TO A SINGLE DIGIT IN TWO YEARS
ARTICLE DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT | PHOTOGRAPHY MCRAE PHOTOGRAPHY
W
hether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing: to be a single digit handicap or better. As an attor-
ney, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal. So, I dedicated the last two years to improve my handicap from a 30 to an 8, and I plan to keep that number going down. I’ll share the formula for success I used, which will work for any golfer. USE THE FOLLOWING FOUR STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME DRASTICALLY: 1. GET FITTED FOR EQUIPMENT. If you are buying clubs off the rack, you
aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for five-plus years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have a lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easy launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free; just make sure you get the correct length of club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle. On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment in 2017 have premium shaft options. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness, guaranteed. Talk to the guys at Golf MD in Lenexa—they can help fix what ails your game. One thought on putters: since you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf, it should be the most tailored club in your bag. 2. GET GOOD GOLF INSTRUCTION, REGULARLY. We’ve all heard someone
say “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons—not just one—from a PGA-certified pro. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course.

ARTICLE ADRIANE TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL VERSLUIS andmade caramelized energy. These are the words used to describe the harmonious flavors Cool Guy Foods infuse to create the most unimaginable and distinctively gourmet food, reminiscent of the smorgasbord equivalent of Billy Joel and Elton John. What makes these culinary mechanics stand out is that they truly understand what it means to provide a hands-free, comprehensive complement to an otherwise high-stress event, and they do it all among a pretty amped backdrop. So who are Cool Guy Foods? Picture a couple of guys with a passion for food, a desire to cook and the drive to pull off a great gastronomic experience, and you would unveil Cody Wyatt and Jeff Berges. Wyatt explains that he always had an interest in tactile activities which lead him to explore anything with wheels and a motor. Add to this a natural entrepreneurial curiosity, and by age 10 he was already on course to become a businessman. But it was in the summer of the year he turned 13 that the first seeds to owning his own catering company would be planted.

"I was able to come to KC where my father was a chef for Deb Reves Catering," Wyatt says. "I got to wash dishes backstage at concerts, and it was the coolest job ever—seeing concerts for free, being backstage and making a ton of cash. I was hooked." While his love for mechanical engineering never went away, another craving was brewing, and he determined he wanted to make room in his life for both. In a rather haphazard fashion, Wyatt decided to enter a culinary program in Colorado where naturally, he thrived. Once he returned to Kansas City he became the executive chef for Deb Reves Catering and opened restaurants during the offseasons of the concerts. Then, in 2012, he was given the opportunity to buy the catering company and needed a partner in the endeavor. Jeff Berges was an exceptional choice, and Cool Guy Foods was born.

Many of the most critical components of a successful show are the happenings behind the scenes, and having sustainable sustenance before, during and after any high-energy performance is critical. Cool Guy Foods seamlessly master these tasks in almost an ethereal fashion, maintaining professionalism from beginning to end. From the moment the tour trucks pull up, coffee is freshly brewed and plans are already in place for a client-centered feast tailored to meet their needs. Their primary clientele is in the music and film industries, and while some clients are local, they also cater to national and international artists as well. While it would be easy to get caught up in infatuation, these cooking enthusiasts always uphold their standard of distinction.Â

COOL GUY FOODS (CON TI N U ED)
"They’re not going to walk into a bunch of starstruck servers with us. You have to leave that at home. They get enough of that on stage," Wyatt says. "Backstage is their home life, where they’re able to be normal and not have to sign an autograph on their way to the buffet table. Sometimes it’s hard. I mean, everyone has that one rock star or that one actor who it’s tough not to stare at, and you want to run up to and be like, 'OMG I’m your biggest fan!' But, being professional and not being a fan is very important." It would be remiss to discuss a catering business and not mention the food, and for Cool Guy, the most important ingredient is love. They have taken their enthusiasm for food and permeated it into each dish they prepare, and while they have put a remarkable spin on traditional dishes such as succulent chili rubbed rib-eye with braised bok choy and crimini mushrooms, and mouthwatering jerked pork tenderloin with cilantro and date relish, they also have a reputation for the eclectic tastes with the spicy five bean curr. Their raw chocolate avocado mousse pie is said to blow minds. They do it all, and they do it without error. Clients have the option to taste from an extensive menu including warm goat cheese and tea-smoked duck canapé; flavorful pecan encrusted salmon with brandy maple glaze; fresh field greens with bleu cheese and spiced pecans in tomato vinaigrette; and hearty oxtail soup, just to name a few. "(Because) Most of our clients live on the road we make them feel at home for the day," Wyatt says of Cool Guy Foods' ultimate goal. "We work to keep them relaxed and happy. Our clients work hard and have to perform. We give them the energy and nutrition to make it all happen." And exactly how did the name Cool Guy Foods come to be? It was a term of endearment that seemed to suit their vision and was derived from their family of chefs. Simply put, it is used after they witness something that is out of this world or an amazement. One look at how they have mastered the art of creating a remarkable spread, and the name, indeed, is perfectly fitting.

How doing drugs can sink your custody case Stange Law Firm, PC
Parties going through a custody case often find the process difficult and emotionally draining. Custody cases often happen in the midst of a break-up. The break-up could be through divorce proceedings. Or, the break-up can occur outside of marriage where parties have children together. In these times, the stress can be overwhelming. Unfortunately, many can turn to drugs or alcohol as an escape. For others, they may have used drugs previously in the past. They might have used drugs casually with the knowledge of their spouse or significant other. When the relationship was still intact, the drug use might not have been a major source of dispute between the parties. In some instances, parties may have casually used drugs together. Obviously, frequent drug use in front of children is not a good thing in any shape, or form. There are many studies that point to this being harmful to children. Without getting into whether casual drug use away from the children is harmful to the children or not, the reality is that a failed drug test in the midst of a custody case can sink it. If a parent is seeking frequent and meaningful contact
36
with their children, a failed drug test can be fatal to the overall outcome. Even where both parties have used drugs in the past — but one party is currently passing drug tests while the other is failing — the results can be disastrous for the parent who does not presently test clean. In many instances, a parent’s visitation might end up being supervised for a time until several clean drug tests are present. In some cases, the court may want a parent to undergo drug rehabilitation before receiving unsupervised visitation. In some cases, where a parent continually fails drug tests, that parent could ultimately end up with only supervised visitation for the long-term. Importantly, that parent can also end up not being an equal decision maker in the lives of their children in terms of legal custody. In some cases where the drug use is extreme, parents can even have their parental rights terminated — and the children can end up in the custody of the state. For all these reasons, it is critical that parents think long and hard before they engage in casual drug use as a parent. At the end of the day, the interests of the children have to come first. The reality is that it can be extremely difficult for anybody to control their drug use even when they are not in the midst of a custody case. However, while in the
Johnson County Lifestyle | November 2017
middle of a custody case and/or court proceedings, the drug use simply has to stop. One might question why it’s okay for parties to engage in casual alcohol use, yet they can’t engage in casual drug use, but the reality is that drugs are still illegal in most states. Many judges will simply think the worst (and conclude the drug use is persistent) if a party cannot refrain from using drugs when the custody of their children are at stake. And, for this reason, a failed drug test can figuratively bring down a custody case quicker than the downing of the Titanic. Thus, if you care about your children, and desire frequent and meaningful visitation, you cannot risk failing a drug test. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, juvenile matters, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Golfing for a Cause ANNUAL DIGITAL ALLY OPEN SUPPORTS THE COMMUNITY AND LOCAL CHARITIES ARTICLE KATHRYN LEO
I
f you love golf then you have probably heard about the Digital Ally Open in Overland Park that attracts thousands of golf fans and
enthusiastic spectators each year, but you might not know that giving back is the focus of the golf tournament held each year in July at the Nicklaus Golf Club at Lionsgate in Overland Park. The Digital Ally Open is part of the Web.com Tour which is the devel-
opmental tour for the PGA. These golfers are professionals attempting to reach the PGA Tour, and the Web.com golfers who are in the top 25 of the money list at the end of the year are given their PGA Tour memberships for the next season. Therefore, the Digital Ally Open is potentially hosting the next big name in golf.
