Spring Sprang Early! S

ince my crocuses poked their golden and purple blooms through the soil on February 29 and my daffodils were blooming on March 6, I feel like we’ve enjoyed the earliest spring on record and the (very limited) color in my gardens peaked far too early. But either way, it’s got me in the mood for gardening. And by that, I mean I’ll pick up sticks in the yard, pull some dead leaves away from my hosta pips and daylily starts and I’ll cut back the English ivy that’s creeping up the tree trunks and over the sidewalk edges. Finally, I’ll gently fold down the leaves from my already-spent bulbs and bundle them with a rubber band; a little lesson learned from my master gardener mom. This is the total extent of my gardening expertise, so I’ll leave my joy of gardens to the experts and encourage you to do a web search of “garden tours of Kansas City.” It is amazing how many clubs and societies exist in the Metro area with a focus on a love of flowers and foliage. There are water gardens clubs, train garden societies and garden groups that focus on historic homes. There are community gardens and parks featuring historic rose gardens. There are garden clubs who maintain the grounds near City Hall and the lovely flower pots around the downtown area and the list goes on and on. Get out there and take a tour, or if you’ve got a green thumb in need of flexing, join a group! My favorites for simple viewing are the gardens at Powell Gardens and the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Garden. And you know how I am…. I do love to send you out to discover the treasures of this amazing community in which we live. If you haven’t visited both of these particular gems, please add them to your list. In my greythumbed humble opinion they are at their peak in May, June and July, but they look beautiful through the fall because they’ve got experts who know how to do more than plant a few bulbs, (she says with a bit of regret and remorse.)

He started volunteering during optometry school as part of the Student Volunteers in Optometric Service to Humanity (SVOSH) program, where he sorted through boxes of donated glasses, cleaned them, then took them on mission trips to give to people without access to eye care and has traveled to Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala with Gift of Sight to provide missionary eye care. “My experiences as a student made it exciting to continue the rewarding pursuit of providing for those in need as part of the Gift of Sight Program,” says Schreiber. “I’ve been on five mission trips. The best part of what we do is seeing someone looking out on the world—they’re seeing things clearly for the first time, and their smile when they finally see the person they are with or can see their surroundings with new eyes is what makes it exciting to travel to places where there is a lack of access to this kind of care.” Schreiber says he’s reminded each time he returns to his home in Leawood how blessed and fortunate we are in the US; but he—and his colleagues at Fairway Eye Center—are also keenly aware that there are countless people here at home who need help as well. “Because of this, we support the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired (CCVI), provide eye care and vision services for local schools, donate time in the local community in conjunction with our local Lion’s Club, and continue to provide both eyewear and sun wear to those who need it most,” he says. They decided to remove the paneling in the great room and darkened the beautiful existing peg floors to a warm and toasty brown color. They painted the honey oak trim and crown molding a crisp snowy white, and added custom shelves and a desk in the office. In the kitchen, they altered the footprint by creating an 8'Â island in the center of the kitchen, closed off a window, and added more lights to the room. The large island includes bar stool seating for four and is the perfect place to eat breakfast and work on homework. The kitchen table was designed by Unruh furniture in Grandview, and was custom made to fit the dimensions of the room. One of the most dramatic surface changes took place in the great room and eat-in kitchen, where they white washed the dark brick fireplaces and rebuilt the mantels. While the project took a couple of months, the results are something that brings them joy each time they walk into the house. They look forward to years of memory making with their family and friends in this new and updated space.

id you know that recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to power a 100-watt light bulb for four hours? Hunt Magee, owner of KC Curbside Glass, understands this and is now shedding a lot of light on the glass recycling industry. When he relocated to the Kansas City area from North Carolina fourÂ years ago, Magee soon came to realize that he could not simply toss his empty glass bottles, jars and other glass items directly into his recycling bin.

A recycler by nature, he learned that, while one can drop off glass for recycling at any of the Ripple Glass locations in town, there was no pick up service available. As a simple gesture for the neighbors on his street, he initially began collecting their empty glass jars and bottles and offered to take them to the recycling compound himself. date has collected roughly 200,000 pounds of glass for recycling purposes…more than enough to give power to that proverbial light bulb of an idea. He soon went from collecting the empty glass containers of his neighbors and created a glass recycling pickup business that snowballed from 50 homes in his own neighborhood to multiple places throughout Johnson County, including both residential and commercial pick up services. When he opened for business in January, 2013, he never imagined that his recycling habits could lead to a business that was truly a win-win for both the environment and the community. Every other week, KC Curbside Glass will pick up empty glass bottles, jars and other glass items, which customers can toss into the beautiful blue bins, provided by Magee. When customers are finished with that beer bottle or pickle jar, they just toss it into the bin – label and all – and KC Curbside Glass will pick it up on a designated pick-up day for just $10 a month. It’s that easy. Even if there is just one glass bottle in the bin, Magee stands at the ready. “We empty the bin and then deliver the contents to Ripple Glass, where they process the glass to reuse in fiberglass insulation and new bottles,” explains Magee, who also noted that glass, along with aluminum products, can be recycled endlessly. “In the Kansas City metro area, only about 20 percent of the glass is currently being recycled,” he notes. “Before Ripple Glass started in 2009, only six percent was being recycled.” Magee wants to see those numbers improve. “I want to double that 20 percent figure,” he emphasizes. Now serving Gardner, Leawood, Lenexa, Olathe, Overland Park, Stilwell, Shawnee and Spring Hill, Magee intends to expand his operations within the next year, with the anticipation of offering pickup services on the Missouri side.

These 5 tips can help families protect and preserve assets: FIND AN ADVISOR WITH A PROCESS

Work with a financial advisor that has a process in place to identify signs of dementia and steps that activate when signs arise. Waiting until a need or crisis arises to discuss dementia’s impact on finances and to create a plan can lead to confusion and hurt feelings. For example, when we first meet with clients, we discuss the potential for diminished mental capacity occurring in the future and walk through our “sharing of information” process. rish Reed doesn’t hold back when it comes to expressing her enthusiasm for painting, and when you admire her work, you can’t help but wonder if perhaps she was a child prodigy in this regard. However, as she reveals her story, her professional background in education and technology was on the opposite end of the spectrum, and transitioning into the work that intoxicates her spirit today can essentially be traced back to one fortuitous phone call in 2001 from her mother who lives on the East Coast. “She called me one day and asked me if I wanted to attend an art show with her in Toronto,” recalls Reed. “I thought, ‘Sure, why not?’ However, what she thought was simply an art show turned into an art class, resulting in full-fledged certification by the end of the week-long session. “I became certified in the One Stroke Painting method as taught by Donna Dewberry and passed board exams during the time I was there,” says Reed, who at the time did not realize that week would serve as the springboard for new opportunities. In less than a week, Reed not only embraced her passion but also secured a new job. “Shortly after coming home, I walked into a Michael’s craft store and asked if they needed a One Stroke instructor,” says Reed. Serendipity was on her side that day, as several area stores were searching for qualified instructors in that discipline and had yet to find anyone. 48

Initially wearing multiple hats, Reed managed to simultaneously juggle her painting ambitions with her long-standing career, something she enjoyed but never truly felt to be her calling. “I had often heard the phrase ‘If money and time were not an issue, what would you do?’ My answer was always ‘Paint!’” she recalls, and realized through that sentiment she was being called to come back to her core, which was expressing herself artistically. From there, Ten Talents Art was born, the name of her business taken from a story in the Bible that teaches if you use your talents wisely, more will be given to you, and while the term “starving artist” certainly applied in the initial stages, Reed now enjoys a blessed career while contributing to the success of others. Although she taught numerous One Stroke classes over the ensuing years, Reed’s primary focus now is creating hand-painted barware for special events and fund raisers, and she is widely known for her contributions in this regard to the annual STEMS event at the Overland Park Arboretum. I call this functional art,” says Reed, who also does special orders. When not creating new designs, Reed, along with her husband Bob, enjoys visiting many local attractions, including The Museum at Prairiefire in Overland Park and the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City. “We are fortunate to have a world-renowned museum here,” she emphasizes, referring to the Nelson. “I love to go there and experience the art, inspiring my imagination and finding not only the story within the art but also my own story.” When it’s time to get back to work, Reed takes that inspiration and enjoys giving back and inspiring others. “I love to do fundraisers and become a part of that success,” she says with a smile. van Zislis had to live simply because the salary of a seventh-grade teacher in Aspen, Colorado didn’t provide for many housing options. After a frustrated search, Zislis was able to rent a 250-squarefoot mining cabin without running water or electricity for $50 a month. the historic John Wornall and Alexander Majors Houses, will open the garden gate to six of the most stunning and prestigious garden spaces in Kansas City. The bi-annual garden tour is the organization’s largest fundraiser, which supports the mission of bringing history to life through innovative, hands-on programs and experiences for thousands of children and adults throughout the greater Kansas City region. Gardening Success is a Fluid Situation A

ll along I considered hostas the lazy gardener’s hero. These attractive, leafy plants thrive in the shade where many other pretty things will not. They sprout flowers now and then, and best of all, they come back every year. Plant once, kick back forever, I thought. I was so buzzed by the idea this elegant ground cover would reappear every spring. I would look like a pro, yet all I had to do was maybe throw in a little fertilizer, and then toss enough water their way. That was only if it didn’t rain enough. Each spring, as the shade took over my back and side yards, I planted even more hostas. I discovered varieties with pretty patterns, and some solid ones with blueish or chartreuse tints. Some boasted interesting textures. Nature’s corduroy! (A description I assume master gardeners use.) No matter what type I selected, these beauties punctuated my yard with an air of paradise. Until… Wabbits. Last year, the deceptively cute furry creatures waged a war with me. The stole my easy hosta lifestyle. Imagine my shock the first time I approached my favorite original plant—the monster bloomer--only to see its massive outer leaves chomped to shreds.

“Noooo, not my big blue floppy Dumbo ear!” (That’s the scientific horticultural term.) I dropped my hose and ran to the newer purchases on the side of the house, the ones I doggedly searched for in way too many nurseries. I had become picky about a certain crisp, creamy edged pattern on one particular variety, and I had to have it. (This one is known in the botanical world as The Cool Ones That Cost More.) My newbie plant$ were chewed down to the stems, like they were masquerading as chives. I hurried back indoors, revved up my search engine and found two recommended solutions: chicken wire or repellant spray. Chicken wire was out, for aesthetic reasons. Not to mention the effort. Imagine? But squirting a bottle of environmentally friendly stuff upon graceful leaves seemed simple enough. According to the directions, I just had to walk around, coat my hostas with a fine mist, and laugh maniacally at the little hungry fur balls sharpening their teeth beneath the bushes. “Go try some dandelions, you picky little hipsters!” Despite this battle plan, there were a few problems. The main one being I was late to the boxing match. Nothing is more disheartening than dousing an

invisible layer of protection on a half-destroyed garden. If only I had paid attention the previous week, before word got out on nature’s yelp reviews. However, the bigger glitch was me. Once I began spraying this “liquid chicken wire,” I was overcome. What was that…smell? I was hoping for something undetectable to humans, like a dog whistle, but for the nose. Or a scent similar to mosquito-repelling citronella, which is somewhat pleasant. But Eau de No Bunny? Even a Beatrix Potter plush toy would run away from its foul mist. Here’s the most delicate, glossy magazine way to describe my take on the scent: gentle pre-dawn wafts from the dampened streets of New Orleans’ French Quarter…the morning after Mardi Gras. That’s right: bottled hurl. So what’s this amateur gardener’s overall take on the liquid solution? It seemed to offer a total smack down on the problem. The stuff kept me out of the yard, so I didn’t even care if the hostas were there or not.
