LIFESTYLE LETTER
Hello friends, This month, we focus on design and style. Colors, textures, lighting, shapes, function and fabrics. These are all means of self-expression. And that's what style is all about. Finding a means to tell our personal story, share our journey with the world. Our home is full of art from talented family and friends, reminding me of special relationships and meaningful moments. Our shelves and ledges are lined with more than 40 antique gumball and vending machines that my husband has collected over the years. One distributed a single cigarette for a penny, usually sitting at the edge of a bar. Another napkin holder also provided a fortune for a coin. The oldest was made in 1902, a penny for a gumball. He started collecting machines as a teen, following his mom, an interior designer, to antique malls and estate sales. I love the collection. They are colorful, interesting to look at and remind me of my husband's playful side. What do you collect? Send me a note; I'd love to know more! Enjoy this issue and stay in touch.

When we became empty nesters, my husband swooped in, emptied our son’s room, painted it and created a cool office for himself. Together, we boxed up high school trophies, middle school text books and childhood keepsakes. The act was cathartic and productive. Many empty nesters consider moving, changing up their larger home for a more compact living space. Others redesign their current home, reconfiguring rooms for a different use or style. For years, interior designer Andria Parker has helped clients nearing their empty-nesting season decide whether to move or stay in their current home. They generally jump in, leaning toward moving, then once they see the cost of purchasing a home, decide to renovate. “One client looked to purchase a ranch home in Roswell and renovate it. The whole project tallied more than $1 million with less than half the square footage of their current home,” says Andria. “Another client looked to purchase a new construction townhome and ultimately realized that the limitations the builder offered for options were too much of a compromise.” She has had clients leap to go urban and purchase a townhome or cluster home in downtown Roswell or at Avalon.

Both clients ended up making a large shift in downsizing their belongings and living in a smaller footprint. “Our firm helped them to design their finishes and furnish the homes,” says Andria. “Though the majority of the couples I have worked with who ponder whether to ‘love it or list it’ ultimately decide not to sell but to renovate to live in the space they dreamed of.” As the family changes, the living space and bedrooms may welcome married children and grandchildren to gather and enjoy. The current home, typically with significant equity, is now a different kind of home base, so homeowners can customize and update with their new style and needs.
PROJECT BLUEPRINT: JOHNS CREEK KITCHEN RENOVATION BY HAVEN LANE DESIGN STUDIO AND HOME BOUTIQUE
This family of four has lived in Johns Creek for 15 years. The youngest daughter is now entering her senior year of college. The couple considered moving to a “city lifestyle” but, since their home’s value had climbed, decided to stay put and jump into a big kitchen reno. We did a full gut of the kitchen and installed a new cabinet layout, which includes a large central island, relocated the stove, added a custom vent hood, included panel ready/ custom cabinet appliances and a surprise walk-in pantry that is concealed behind cabinet doors. We also included quartz countertops and a marble backsplash.

PROJECT BLUEPRINT: FULL MAIN FLOOR & BASEMENT RENOVATION BY HAVEN LANE DESIGN AND HOME BOUTIQUE
This couple sent their youngest child off to college and started thinking about what the future would look like for their family and their time together. With three kids in college, they knew they had time to still enjoy a lot of family gatherings before the kids potentially moved completely out and potentially found jobs in other cities. They felt it was worth the investment to use the time with the empty house to completely renovate their main floor and basement to match their new “big kid” lifestyle. We completely reworked their main floor plan. We enlarged the kitchen and dining footprint by reworking the laundry room and adding a bump-out on the screened porch. We added two amazing accordion doors to the porch, creating an inside/outside feel to the main living space. We created a customized mudroom out of the original laundry room and made the entryway to that mudroom a concealed door from the moody butler pantry we created off the kitchen. The entire main floor has a warm/ inviting upscale modern/ organic feel. The basement has a living space and customized gym, complete with sauna and a guest room. Jewelr y Box Reno Buying, selling, smarter investing with diamonds and jewelry at Barbree & Co.
Fall has long been associated with fashion renewal; a time for combing through closets, checking trends and planning budgets for the new season. While traditional portfolios often center on stocks and real estate, a growing number of investors are turning to something more tangible: jewelry. Equal parts personal adornment and financial asset, fine jewelry offers a unique intersection of beauty and long-term value. Few understand this balance better than Amy Barbree, owner of Barbree & Co., a fine jewelry buyer based in Chamblee. With over three decades of experience, Barbree has built a reputation rooted in trust, expertise and relationship-driven service. But her journey into the industry began long before her company’s founding. “I was introduced to the retail and jewelry world through my family. My father owned gift stores in the early 1990s. After he suffered a stroke, I stepped in to help support our family, which led me to take a very hands-on approach to building my career,” she shares. “I began traveling across the country selling Native American jewelry wherever I could connect with customers. That experience taught me resilience, adaptability and the importance of building trust with every interaction.”
Today, that foundation informs how Barbree navigates an evolving market— one currently shaped by inflation, shifting consumer preferences and record-high precious metal prices. “In today’s market, precious metals, particularly gold and silver, continue to be among the most reliable physical assets for preserving value,” Barbree explains. “They have historically served as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty, while also offering diversification within a broader investment portfolio.” This stability is driving a noticeable uptick in selling activity. As gold and silver prices climb, many individuals are choosing to liquidate assets they’ve held for years. “Many clients are taking advantage of these strong market conditions to convert unused or inherited jewelry into cash,” Barbree notes. Yet the value of jewelry isn’t always obvious. Pieces that feel outdated, or even broken, can still carry significant worth. “Many people have valuable items tucked away without fully realizing their worth,” she says, emphasizing the importance of professional evaluations to uncover hidden value. For those looking to invest, Barbree advises patience over quick returns. “Precious metals and physical assets tend CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/J O HN S C R E E K

to perform best over time rather than as a short-term investment,” she explains. “Patience and consistency are key.” Still, not every piece should be reduced to its market value. When it comes to family heirlooms, Barbree encourages thoughtful consideration. “If there is any hesitation, it’s often best to hold onto the piece. For many, the decision ultimately comes down to personal significance versus practicality.” As the investment landscape continues to shift, one thing remains clear: the most meaningful investments are often the ones you can hold in your hands.

B E AU T I F U L “WINDOW TREATMENTS ARE A KEY DESIGN ELEMENT THAT ARE PRACTICAL BUT NEVER BORING.”
While the last of summer’s rays flood the house and drapes are drawn mid-day, it’s time to think about the change of seasons and consider easy and beautiful interior updates. Window treatments are a key design element that are practical but never boring. With automation options and more colors, fabrics, textures and styles than you could imagine, it’s time to call in the professionals. For more than three decades, Classic Blinds & Shutters has helped homeowners throughout Metro Atlanta create custom blinds, shades, shutters and draperies. We asked owner Andrea Zare to share her timely thoughts on beautiful and functional window treatments.

CLASSIC STYLE
Linen blends, textured woven fabrics, subtle patterns and velvet accents are leading this season’s trends. Pinch Pleat, Euro Pleat and Ripplefold draperies are customer favorites, while understated trim provides the finishing touch. Many of these styles can be automated for simple operation.
AUTOMATION
Motorized window treatments allow homeowners to schedule opening and closing times, control their shades with a smartphone or remote or use voice assistants such as Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home. Hushed motors, rechargeable battery options and onetouch scenes bring convenience with luxury.
COLOR AND TEXTURE
Warm neutrals like ivory, oatmeal, sand, mushroom, taupe and greige are being paired with olive, cinnamon, terracotta, mocha, charcoal and deep navy. Layering sheer fabrics with decorative draperies creates depth, privacy and a sophisticated designer polish.
WARRANTY AND SERVICE
Be sure your professionals stand behind the products and installation workmanship. Many manufacturers provide outstanding warranties, and customers can rely on the company’s local service team long after installation for adjustments, service and support. Designed for a 1930s Tudor, this mudroom renovation pairs period-inspired millwork with an unexpected pastel palette. A custom mosaic tile floor, built-in bench with a scalloped edge and vintage-inspired details create a fresh and colorful interpretation of the home’s classic architecture.
PANELS AND TILES FOREVER.
Located at a newly added side entry, this mudroom was designed as part of a full Craftsman home renovation. MORE THAN
a Bag
A BLEND OF FASHION AND FUNCTION 30
FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y
A purse does more than hold your phone, keys, and wallet. It quietly pulls an outfit together while also handling the practical side of everyday life. That balance between fashion and function is what makes a great purse feel less like an accessory and more like part of a personal style. Some bags are designed to stand out. A bold color, metallic detail, or structured shape can instantly become the statement piece of an outfit. Even with simple jeans and a white T-shirt, the right purse adds personality and intention. Other times, a purse works best when it blends in. Neutral tones, soft leather, or minimalist designs create a polished look without stealing attention from the rest of the outfit. These subtle bags are often the ones people reach for every day because they work with almost everything.
FASHION TRENDS MAY CHANGE EVERY SEASON, BUT THE ROLE OF A PURSE STAYS THE SAME.
Of course, style only goes so far if a purse is impractical. The best bags are the ones that fit real life. A roomy tote helps someone move from work meetings to errands without missing a beat. Even a small clutch has a purpose for evenings out when only the essentials matter. Fashion trends may change every season, but the role of a purse stays the same. It adapts while still serving a purpose. That’s why people often invest in bags they truly love. A good purse is dependable, but it also can make a fashion statement. In many ways, a purse is one of the few accessories that people use every single day. It carries necessities, reflects personal style, and can completely change the tone of an outfit. Whether bold and eye-catching or simple and understated, a purse proves that fashion and function can exist beautifully together. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/J O HN S C R E E K
