Our first night at Under Canvas North Yellowstone, a gentle rain turned into a ferocious storm, blowing gusts of wind across the Paradise Valley right down the flue of the tiny but mighty wood-burning stove in our tent. We unzipped the heavy duty canvas door and window flaps for a few minutes, stoked the fire and crawled back under the down duvet of the king bed to listen to the drama outside. We felt completely safe and cozy in the sturdy safari-inspired tent, designed by the founders of Under Canvas, now with 13 locations, all near national parks. The next morning after a hot shower (each tent has a bathroom stocked with organic bath products), I wandered down to the Yellowstone River just outside our tent, where a fly angler was already casting into the clear water. Up at the expansive lobby tent, furnished with West Elm classics, hot breakfast was being served (healthy, hearty and really delicious) and guests were chatting about the day’s plans. The historic lively town of Livingston, Wyoming is an easy 20 minute drive and the entrance to Yellowstone National Park is an hour south. Stop at Chico Hot Springs for a long soak and lunch and watch for elk, moose, wolves and grizzly bears along the way. The Paradise Valley, aptly named, offers glorious views of the Absaroka Beartooth Mountains and Gallatin Range, ranging in elevation from 4,500 to 10,921 (at Emigrant Peak). One morning (we visited in September), we woke to find the season’s first snow on the peaks of the mountains. From the deck of our tent, coffee in hand, I watched the clouds part revealing the bright white peaks. The staff was nonchalant while guests excitedly peered through the lobby telescope searching for wildlife amongst the snowy ridges. Each Under Canvas lobby tent is stocked with books on local history, games, gear, merch and snacks. While tents have USB battery packs to power the lamps, you’ll find outlets (if you must) in the lobby. One of my favorite things about traveling with my partner Marty is witnessing his childlike excitement the moment a gracious host hands us the keys to our temporary quarters. That joy was especially palpable when we checked into The Bobby Hotel in Nashville—our first road trip since moving to Atlanta a year ago. Our room on the sixth floor felt more like a suite, with its generous layout and mid-century modern flair. Every detail was thoughtfully curated, from the bespoke furnishings to the striking bathroom cleverly enclosed by glass panels and a wraparound velvet curtain. It was the kind of space that invites you to slow down and savor the design. A few floors up, the rooftop bar offered a quirky surprise: a vintage bus repurposed as a lounge space. While the cocktails were tempting, Marty and I couldn’t resist our tradition—snapping goofy pictures in the rooftop photo booth, a ritual that always makes us laugh. Our mornings began with coffee and pastries at the hotel’s cozy café, where the people-watching was as satisfying as my perfectly steamed flat white. Dinner downstairs at Union Tavern was a standout—we both agreed they had some of the best mocktails we’d ever had. (Seriously, we’re still talking about it.) Of course, no trip to Nashville is complete without exploring the city itself. While we’re not big on bar-hopping, we love wandering downtown, weaving through boot barns and honky-tonks. A tip from the front desk led us to Hatch Show Print, a historic letterpress shop that turned out to be a highlight of our trip—second only to the 11 p.m. wagyu burger we ordered via room service. What we loved most about The Bobby was its perfect balance: close enough to the city’s vibrant nightlife, yet tucked just far enough away to offer a peaceful retreat. Whether you’re into music, burlesque, or just a quiet night in, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve found your own little corner of Nashville.

One of the day’s most moving experiences was visiting Capilla del Hombre, the powerful museum and final legacy of renowned Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín. The museum, built next to his preserved home, is a space dedicated to human dignity and reflection. The culinary highlights were unforgettable. Relais & Châteaux recommended Zazu, served elevated Ecuadorian flavors with a refined, contemporary twist, showcasing the city’s growing culinary creativity. As the sun set behind the Andes, light washes over Quito’s colonial rooftops, the city leaves a lasting impression; vibrant, soulful and rich in contrasts. Though just 24 hours, the memories endure, etched into every panoramic view, every bite of chocolate and every heartfelt conversation with Juan Pablo.

As if suspended between the East and West Andes at more than 9,000 feet above sea level, Ecuador’s capital city, Quito, is both old and new, earthy and elegant. Hiring a private local guide transformed my visit from sightseeing into something deeply personal and immersive. Juan Pablo León met me very early in the morning with a warm smile and an infectious passion for his city and country. Our tour began at La Mitad del Mundo, the iconic monument marking the equator’s line, but just a short distance away, was the Intiñan Museum, home to the true equator. There, interactive exhibits explored indigenous astronomy, Ecuadorian culture and curious equatorial phenomena, like balancing an egg on a nail. In Quito’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, time slowed on cobblestone streets lined with baroque churches and pastel colored buildings. Every corner echoed with the richness of Spanish colonial history. At Yumbos Chocolate, a boutique chocolatier celebrating Ecuador’s prized cacao, I sampled hand-crafted bars infused with local flavors like ginger, coffee and chili.
