Hello friends,
Growing up with four older brothers, I felt forever protected. Even now, with one fewer brother (we lost Dan to AIDS), I never feel it’s just me against the world. I feel their unconditional love and support every day, through all my moves (more than 20), my challenges and dreams. I am a lucky little sister.
My dad, Spud Sparling, taught me to shake hands with eyes locked and a strong grip. Men comment on it now, surprised that a little lady has such a solid grip. No limp fish here. We lost dad to lung cancer 23 years ago. I was seven months pregnant with my son when I sang a medley of my dad’s greatest hits. He played the piano enthusiastically and once accompanied Frank Sinatra during his front-line tour when The Chairman of the Board’s keyboard player came down with the flu. Spud lasted two numbers, so the story goes, until Ol’ Blue Eyes dismissed him with minimal appreciation. He played for his Rotary club’s sing-alongs and for my friend’s wedding when her musicians were snowed in on her January date in Michigan. I remember hiding out under the grand piano in our living room while he played his medley, watching his feet pump the pedals and create his own percussion. He was an eternal optimist, something else I inherited. Thanks, Dad.
This month, we’re honoring men who make family and philanthropy a priority. Enjoy our MEN'S issue and go shake the hands of all the men in your life who make you laugh.

HOTEL CASHIERS IS THE PERFECT OUTPOST FOR A GUY’S WEEKEND
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
While some grooms count on a weekend of debauchery before their wedding, others prefer to unplug and hang out around a fire with a glass of something dark and good conversations with the friends who know them best.
The Hotel Cashiers is a thoughtfully restored old-school motor lodge inn where you can park your car outside your door and settle in for the weekend. Walking distance from the four-cornered town center of Cashiers, North Carolina, the hotel is perched on a hill, backing up to rolling wooded views, an easy two-anda-half-hour drive from Johns Creek. The renovation includes new interiors that lilt toward mid-century modern, with a sheen of comfort (cozy throw blankets) and conveniences (a shared kitchen with extra coffee, breakfast and snacks). Among 15 rooms is one stand-alone suite, for the groom of course.
We built a fire in the community firepit in the garden and enjoyed a cool evening watching the stars come out for hours. It's a BYO (Build Your Own) and is always stocked with firewood.
With four restaurants (pizza, Mexican, waffles and ice cream, and a diner) and several shops on the property at the bottom of the hill, you don't have to go far.
The hospitality is warm and efficient and the bar is small but inviting, with locals stopping by to taste what’s new on the craft beer and rotating wine menus. It's an ideal spot for parties, bachelor parties, receptions, and buyouts.
Hotel Cashiers recently launched a new private residence collection with its inaugural listing, just in time for summer. Outland Skyhaus , is the ideal luxury vacation rental in the Cashiers area, featuring 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and the best views in town!
HotelCashiers.com
This season, the Bar at Hotel Cashiers will be hosting several wine-tasting events showcasing seasonal wine menus and a live music series, as well as artist and author talks. The summer music roster will be headlined by the July 15 performance of Darren Nicholson, a Grammy-nominated artist performing original Americana music from the mountains of Western North Carolina. Darren is also a 13-time International Bluegrass Music Association winner and has performed at the Grand Ole Opry. The music series will also include monthly jazz sets including "Sip & Swing" jazz Sundays with mimosas and other wine specials.
Guys Night Out
Terrazas Bar and Grill
ARTICLE
When Tony Maya was out to dinner at one of his favorite places and struck up a conversation with restaurant staffer Martin Osorio, he had no idea that conversation would lead to a friendship and soon a business partnership. They discussed food and business and discovered they had the same dream: to open their own restaurant someday. That someday is now and their new venture, Terrazas Bar and Grill in Johns Creek, is now open, serving elevated Mexican food, made from top-quality ingredients and presented with a flair. "We are focused on offering a more upscale approach to Mexican food, with a careful and impressive presentation and the very best produce and ingredients to set us apart from the competition," says Tony.
The most unique dishes on the menu at Terrazas are the Mexican seafood paella which is a variation of the typical Spanish
paella and the ribeye tacos which are served with marrow-filled bone that tops the tacos and is a beautiful finishing touch to a layered and memorable meal.
Their families come from a state in the Gulf Coast of Mexico and their kids were born here. "My oldest son Anthony just left his four-year service at the U.S. Marine Corps and our younger son Andrew is graduating from Forsyth Central High School and will be going to Lanier Tech soon," says Tony, a proud father.
The goal for partner Ozzie Rodriguez along with Tony and Martin is to take guests through an adventure of Mexico’s great cuisine, one bite at a time, using modern techniques for simple yet elegant dishes. Terrazas has an international bar with more than a dozen margaritas ("the best in town," Tony promises) and a wide variety of freshly made cocktails.
The menu is extensive, with nine pages of house-made dishes from tacos and burritos to their signature 8 oz ribeye. It's a good fit for our growing community.
"We chose Johns Creek because of the diversity of its demographics and because it is a very small-business-friendly city that uses common sense when it comes to supporting new entrepreneurs who are opening their small businesses," says Tony. Rafael Gomez is the general manager, and the restaurant is open every day, 11:00 a.m - 10:00 p.m. and until 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

JESS BROWN - JOHNS CREEK
Day job: CFO-Southeast with Marsh McLennan Agency.
What advice would you give a young man entering your industry today?
Do what you have been hired to do and treat all of your colleagues and business partners with respect. You are building your personal brand every step of the way, and doing it the right way will pay off in the long term.
What are your pet peeves in the business workplace?
People who are not self-aware when they come across as disrespectful/dismissive or simply don’t want to work on it, get under my skin pretty quickly.
How do you destress at the end of a busy day?
More often than not, I find myself re-energized when my kids do something impressive within their area of interest. When time permits, I like to pick up a guitar and learn something new (or just fiddle around). The occasional liquor drink doesn’t hurt either.
How will you be spending Father’s Day this year?
Grilling with family and friends would be an excellent way to spend this Father’s Day or any day. I am in a wings or ribs mood of late.
JORDAN CAMPBELL
Day job: I help nonprofits raise money for their amazing missions!
As a fundraising auctioneer, my role is to tap into people’s inner generosity, to engage them with the cause, and to make sure they have a great time while doing so!
What advice would you give a young man entering your industry today?
When you’re on that stage in front of hundreds of people, authenticity and passion are key. It is also important to be unique and give guests the chance to feel fully immersed in the nonprofit’s mission.
What are your pet peeves in the business workplace?
Honestly, I don’t have many pet peeves! I’m fortunate enough to work in the nonprofit sector where every single person is there for the greater good.
How do you destress at the end of a busy day?
For me there’s nothing better than simply unwinding in front of the TV, putting on an episode of The Office or a drama series, and just letting the world drift away with escapism!
How will you be spending Father’s Day this year?
My newborn will be one month old, so I imagine my wife and I will be walking around like zombies, cocooned in our house, stealing sleep and snacks whenever we can! Nervous but excited!
A MINUTE WITH THE MAYOR
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARYELLE PEREZWe sat down with Johns Creek Mayor John Bradberry to talk about cars and community.
SUE G. COLLINS: FOR A LEISURELY SUNDAY DRIVE AROUND JOHNS CREEK, WHAT MIGHT YOUR ROUTE BE?
Mayor John Bradberry: The City of Johns Creek has worked to improve, yet also preserve, several of our collector roads that many residents appreciate for their pastoral feel. I really enjoy driving along Buice Road near my home. Other collector roads like Parsons, Barnwell, and Bell also continue to have a peaceful scenic feel right here in the middle of our city.
DOES JOHNS CREEK HOST ANY EVENTS FOR CAR ENTHUSIASTS?
The City recently partnered with the Rotary Club of Johns Creek – North Fulton to host the Cars for Causes car show that featured dozens of antique classics, sports, hot rods, muscles, customs, and pickups. This event is a fundraiser for the Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation. Last year I enjoyed entering my 1966 Corvair in the car show.
In addition, our Public Safety and Public Works departments do a
great job showing off all things drivable at events like Touch-a-Truck and Community Safety Day. These events are a huge favorite for families in our community.
WHAT EXCITING INITIATIVES OR PROJECTS ARE IN THE WORKS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE, ESPECIALLY FOR DRIVERS IN JOHNS CREEK?
Our Public Works department stays on top of traffic trends and the need to improve intersections and bridges in our city. With over 13 miles of our city bordered by the Chattahoochee River, we have a large number of creeks and streams that are crossed by bridges on our roads. We recently replaced the bridge on Bell Road and plan four additional bridge replacements in the next five years. Keeping our roads in good condition makes driving to places like the soon-toopen 203-acre Cauley Creek Park even more enjoyable.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE LOOKING TO GET INVOLVED IN LOCAL POLITICS OR THE COMMUNITY OF JOHNS CREEK?
Running for political office is just one way to get involved in
our community. We also have a lot of other ways to volunteer your time and talent here in Johns Creek. The city has multiple boards and advisory committees that provide recommendations to the council on topics including parks, events, the arts, and more. We have started this year to shift how we plan many special events, like Diwali and Lunar New Year, using a citizen committee to plan and coordinate much of the fun. There are also many other organizations, like our volunteer-led parks organizations, civic organizations, school support initiatives, or art groups with which people can volunteer.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG DRIVERS OR FAMILIES OF YOUNG DRIVERS?
As the parent of a child who will soon be learning to drive, I wish I had advice or that someone had some to give to me! However, I will say that if your teen driver finds themselves coming to traffic court here in Johns Creek due to a minor infraction, our new D.R.I.V.E. program, which is a pre-trial diversion online course, is something of which we are very proud. The Court's goal is to inform young adult drivers to DRIVE forward by educating them on the rules of the road and the potential risks associated with getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Right now, it is available to those who interact with our courts, but there are plans to expand the program to allow any teen to learn from it in the future.
