Every year, 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The mission of Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) is to educate as many people as possible about the risks and symptoms of ovarian cancer because, currently, there is no early detection test for the disease. Early detection and treatment are vital to increasing survival odds. We were introduced to GOCA by Sean O’Keefe, and now have a 10-year partnership with the organization, supporting GOCA Shaken, Not Stirred Gala, the Teal Trot 5K and so much more. We've loved providing a platform to share GOCA's mission of education and awareness. You can support the GOCA mission by attending the annual Shaken, Not Stirred Gala on Saturday, March 11 at Georgia Aquarium. Proceeds from the event will allow GOCA to continue and expand ovarian cancer education and awareness across Georgia and beyond. Habitat for Humanity–North Central Georgia has announced the kickoff of its 2023 Women Build. Dedicated women representing a diverse cross-section of the business and civic community come together for the shared purpose of providing a safe and attainable place where parents can raise their children. Their initiative provides an opportunity to empower, develop, and expand the skills of women across our community through fellowship and friendship, fundraising and building. “Our goal is to raise $140,000 to build an entire house from the ground up for a family in North Central Georgia,” states club president Serlin Bakotic. “It is done mostly through individual giving and corporate partnerships, which

are women-owned/led or have a focus on empowering women through personal fundraising and giving, collaborative fundraising, and faith and civic partnerships in the community.” “This year, we have included a variety of activities in our monthly meetings. Each meeting, held the second Tuesday of every month, will feature a speaker who will impart knowledge of their profession or their craft, building women through engagement, promise, and presence,” she says. “We try to make each meeting fun & engaging, with clever refreshments at all gatherings and a fun way to connect while committing to a cause in the community. We are currently recruiting new members who will participate in the activities and planning for the year.” Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry that builds affordable housing for purchase by low to moderate income families who demonstrate a capacity for responsible homeownership. Since its inception in 1995, Habitat-NCG has built, rehabbed, or repaired over 440 homes in North Fulton, Cherokee and Forsyth/Dawson counties. Partner families are required to attend educational classes related to homeownership and perform 150 sweat equity hours. They earn between 40% and 70% of the Atlanta area median income and purchase their homes through a 30-year, no-interest loan financed by Habitat-NCG. Over the last ten years, City Lifestyle’s dedication to the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) has changed the way people think about ovarian cancer. Whether advertising the “Teal Trot” or “Teal to Heal,” the stories in the magazines have always been about the survivors. Jim Newman, the publisher of Buckhaven, Alpharetta, and Johns Creek City Lifestyle magazines, along with Sue Collins and Karyn Slovin, have dedicated themselves to telling the stories of real people who live in our communities. “One of the key principles and goals of City Lifestyle is to support our community and give back as much as possible,” says Jim. “GOCA is the perfect partner.” “Our partnership with GOCA has been organic. A Designer at Home Meet Tasha Moody

Brent and Tasha Moody moved to the Johns Creek area one year ago, along with their two children, an English Shepherd puppy and a bearded dragon. A seasoned interior designer and owner of Iris & Oak Interiors, Tasha saw beauty and opportunity in the 1981 home they purchased. One year later she can look back and say that all of the work they put in was truly worth it. We caught up with the busy designer and asked her to share her story. The pandemic affected everyone in different ways. For my family of four, it meant finally acting on a move we had talked about for years. When we lived in Brookhaven, we were happy with our proximity to work, but knew we ultimately wanted to push a little further out to larger lots and quieter streets, which

would provide room for our two growing children to get out in nature and roam a bit more freely. After overseeing digital learning for the better part of a year while trying to run my home staging and interior design business, we knew it was as good a time as any to take the plunge. Not only were the children as disconnected from their friends as they would ever be, but getting them back to in-person learning was a priority. Unsure of where we would go, we started looking at homes in all of the pockets of town from Milton to Dunwoody, Roswell, and Johns Creek. After learning more about the Peachtree Corners/ Johns Creek area and seeing the beauty of the river that winds through, the excellent options of schools and tight-knit community, somehow it just felt right for us. With the timing and location decided, the next hurdle was finding a house during a market of absolute frenzy and seriously low inventory. We went ahead and sold our Brookhaven home and moved into a rental in the school district where we wanted to land so we could be patient, knowing it might take a while to find “the one.” During that time my husband and I talked in detail about what exactly it was that we were looking for. Through these talks, it was clear that a larger lot with a charming home was far more important to us than a large home on a smaller lot. We wanted a place where the kids would enjoy spending time as they transitioned into middle and high school, and friends and family would want to come and stay on the weekends. Having outdoor spaces where the kids have options to play when I said the inevitable “y’all get outside and play” was at the top of my list. After walking through quite a few houses, the charm of our 1981 Cape Cod home on over an acre of land had us sold from the moment we walked in the door. There were many quirks and several negatives (no basement, a detached garage and only 3 bedrooms, to name a few), but the general layout of rooms filled with natural light, walkout backyard and quiet street were enough to warrant the work we would need to do. Upon studying the plans I realized the front of the house almost beckoned for an extension to the left, where we could easily add an attached garage and fourth bedroom over the top. We could then use the detached garage as our “basement” and enclose all of it as one house by adding a long mud hall to unify the home. With the help of a great architect, the final plans created a layout that seemed like it was planned from the start.

Champions Place is a first-of-its-kind shared living environment specifically designed for young adults with physical disabilities. The fourteen residents (plus two live-in occupational therapy students) are now into their third year of living independently, working at jobs in our area, and giving back to their local community. Champions Place also develops a relationship and hosts social and sports activities with a nonresident group of young adults with physical challenges, known as The Titans. Currently, The Champions Community Foundation, which oversees Champions Place and The Titans’

Community, is implementing Champions Place@home, which allows assistive technology in these individuals’ private homes. The Champions Place complex is divided into quads, each accommodating four individual suites. Each quad has a community room. This larger area houses a kitchen, where residents are responsible for shopping, preparing, and cleaning up their breakfast and lunch meals. There is a lounging space furnished with a sofa, chairs, small tables, a large-screen television, and a laundry closet. With this setup, residents can have private time or gather in smaller groups.

A nightly meal is served in the spacious community room with a full kitchen that is wheelchair accessible. The residents gather around two oversized dining tables to unwind and talk about the day’s activities. The outdoor area includes porches, a fire pit, a grill, tables and chairs, a bocce ball court, and a raised garden. The Titans join in streaming favorite shows on movie nights, karaoke, games, tailgate parties, cookouts, parties, and celebrations. Outside the complex, the group attends concerts, Braves games, restaurants, golf, church, and special interest activities. Besides being a residence and a hub for this community to thrive, Champions Place has been a test bed for Google to develop assistive technology. Each resident has become self-reliant by being able to say, “Hey, Google . . .” followed by a command. They can turn on/off lights and operate the television, including changing channels and adjusting the volume. They can also open/close their blinds, make phone calls, listen to music and much more.

As a result of this special technology refined at Champions Place, the Champions Community Foundation has created Champions Place@home. Living away from home is not an option for everyone, but becoming empowered, engaged, and equipped is vital to staving off isolation and depression, which often happens when young adults with physical disabilities age out of school and have reduced social contact. With Champions Place@home, this same portfolio of technology can be installed to relieve the responsibility of these aging parents and impact the self-esteem of their adult child.

A few months ago, we had a photoshoot scheduled at this gorgeous home, intending to shoot the entryway for a cover. With significant curb appeal, we thought the exterior would lend itself beautifully for the shot we had in mind. However, once the photographer framed the front door, we realized the view was just too expansive for the image we had sketched out, so we decided to wait and share the entire home in this issue instead! International Women’s Day is March 8

Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce announced its annual Chicks in Charge event, which will take place on International Women’s Day, March 8, at the Johns Creek Chamber offices from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. This year’s event is sponsored by Andersen Tate and Carr, Renasant Bank, First Citizens Bank, Loyal Trust Bank, Georgia Eye Partners, and Delta Community Credit Union. Founded by the Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce in 2018, Chicks In Charge has grown to an annual sell-out event. Their mission is to be a forum for “Ladies who lead, teach and tell stories about the paths taken and obstacles overcome on their leadership journey.” This year’s guest speakers are Melanie Conner, Becky Tan, and Tara Heaton. Melanie Conner is the CEO of Rainbow Village in Duluth, GA. Rainbow Village’s mission is to transform the lives of families experiencing homelessness by providing help, hope, housing, and healing in order to instill initiative, self-development and accountability that will foster meaningful growth. Melanie holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Georgia State University. She is a graduate of the Interdenominational Theological Center with a Master of Divinity. She also holds a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Capella University. Becky Tan is an entrepreneur, investor, financial educator and campaigner for 30-30 National Financial Literacy Program. Becky graduated with a business degree in 1990 and migrated to the U.S. at the end of 1993. She completed her MBA degree with a major in finance from the Kelley School of Business in 1999. Becky spent most of her corporate career in banking while working for Bank of America in global corporate investment banking. Her responsibilities included structuring and underwriting new debt and equity for public listed companies like Coca Cola, Dr. Pepper, PepsiCo, Bacardi and Anheuser-Busch. In 2013, Becky left her successful career and started her own financial services business. She became a certified financial educator, member of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and a licensed financial professional with the Insurance Commission in numerous states. Tara Heaton is the founder of En Pointe Communication. She applied her years of neuroscience research and years of leadership, sales and presentation experience to build her business. Her clients are purpose-driven leaders, speakers and salespeople who are looking to improve their ability to influence teams, audiences and prospects. In 2005, Tara’s daughter

was struck with a rare virus, resulting in seizures that caused gradual and significant brain damage. With an eBook, speeches, workshops and coaching, Tara teaches strategies and techniques based on the neuroeconomics of what delights and influences the minds of audiences in today’s noisy world.
