LIFESTYLE LETTER

2023!

January 2023 PUBLISHER

Jim Newman | jnewman@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Sue G. Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com

Welcome to the 2023 January issue of Johns Creek City Lifestyle. For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. We approached this issue of Johns Creek City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term, but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. Read about so many of our local businesses and owners whose stories can be helpful in the pursuit of new goals! When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! Where do you find your ZEN? You know I love fly fishing and it's scrambling along the riverbank where you'll see my biggest smile. Happy New Year! xx

We all know smoothies are a good thing. Smoothies you make at home from whole fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals and many other beneficial nutrients. It's often hard to get the daily nutritional dose you need from fruits and veggies, so the more you pack into a smoothie, the quicker and easier it is. By making them yourself, you can also control the flavors and select your base. Here are some of our favorites, but feel free to add or subtract ingredients to make it your perfect recipe!

SpinachBerry Smoothie Not a fan of spinach? Try this to get all its benefits while hiding the taste by adding lots of berries!

I N G R E D IE N T S • • • • • •

1/2 cup strawberries 1/2 cup blueberries 1/4 cup raspberries 2 cups spinach 6 ounces vanilla yogurt 1 cup ice

DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.

AvocadoBanana Smoothie Avocado is a superfood that's rich in vitamin B and high in fiber so you feel fuller longer.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

1 banana, sliced 1/2 avocado, peeled and sliced 1/2 cup soy milk 1 cup Greek yogurt 6 ice cubes 2 teaspoons honey

DIRECTIONS Combine ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.

Peanut ButterBanana Smoothie Peanut butter is known to be high in fat and calories, but it's even higher in benefits from protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. This recipe makes a little go a long way!

INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

1 cup low-fat milk or almond milk 2 bananas 2 tablespoons peanut butter 1 tablespoon cocoa powder 1/3 cup quick oats or rolled oats 1/2 tablespoon honey

DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Note: Peanut butter blends easily when at room temperature or warm.

Kale Smoothie Kale is richer in nutrients than most other vegetables you’d put in your smoothie. We added apples to mask the "veggie" flavor of the kale.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

2/3 cup almond milk 1 1/2 cups kale, chopped 1 stalk celery, sliced 1/2 Gala apple, sliced 1 tablespoon ground flax seed 2 teaspoons honey 1/3 cup ice

DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Vegans can substitute agave nectar for honey to sweeten.

Beet Smoothie Beets are a great source of nutrients including fiber, folate and vitamin C. Beets also contain nitrates and pigments that can help lower blood pressure and boost your workout performance.

INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup almond milk • 1 cup mixed blueberries or berries • 1 small beet, peeled and diced (about 8 ounces) • 1/4 cup frozen pineapple • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt • 1-2 teaspoons honey • Optional: Add 2 tablespoons oatmeal to make the smoothie even more filling.

DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Note: Beets are better if warmed, so gently steam or microwave.

Key Advantages of Buying a Home Today There’s no doubt buying a home today is different than it was over the past couple of years, and the shift in the market has led to advantages for buyers today. Right now, there are specific reasons that make this housing market attractive for those who’ve thought about buying but have sidelined their search due to rising mortgage rates. Buying a home in any market is a personal decision, and the best way to make that decision is to educate yourself on the facts, not following sensationalized headlines in the news today. The reality is, headlines do more to terrify people thinking about buying a home than they do to clarify what’s actually going on with real estate. If you’re thinking about buying a home, you should seriously consider the advantages today’s market offers. Let’s connect so you can make the dream of homeownership a reality. Source: NAR.com

January is a time for recommitment to health and well-being for many people. In 2023, Emory Johns Creek Hospital, in collaboration with Emory University and Emory Healthcare, is focusing on what well-being means to our employees and community. Last year, Emory Healthcare established an Office of Well-Being, launching a new wellness campaign (EmWell) to develop well-being programs for all Emory clinicians, faculty, and staff. This gave Emory Johns Creek Hospital’s existing committee of wellness influencers increased support to build healthy community outreach programs, as well as workplace wellness initiatives for employees. Your local Emory Johns Creek Hospital will be working to reimagine several core tenants of health and well-being, such as healthy weight management, mental and spiritual health, stress management, food and nutrition, physical wellness, and professional well-being in the workplace.

WELL-BEING FOR THE COMMUNITY Eating habits, physical activity, and healthy weight goals are top of mind this time of year for a variety of reasons. Emory Johns Creek Hospital wants to support you - wherever you are on your wellness journey. We offer outpatient nutrition counseling services (in-person and virtual) to help you crush your nutrition goals in 2023! To take advantage of this service, call us at 678.474.8100 and select option 2 to get scheduled. If you’re thinking about medically supervised weight loss, our diverse team of medical and surgical professionals can help by introducing you to our innovative medical weight loss programs and bariatric surgery offerings. Fun fact: Weight loss and bariatric surgery have been a foundational service line of Emory Johns Creek Hospital since it was founded and the hospital has been nationally accredited for metabolic and bariatric surgery since 2005! As our hospital works toward increasing wellness initiatives, be on the lookout for the launch of more community-based wellness programs! CONTINUED >

Green Goddess Dressing makes everything bounce. When my daughter Jane moved to Atlanta two years ago (happy me!), she made this dressing for a green salad and I forever pledged my allegiance to this recipe. Add the freshest herbs from the farmer's market, produce aisle or your home herb garden. Toss it with tortellini or grilled chicken, or go old school with a green or chopped salad. Store in a mason jar, lid tight, in the fridge.

Ja ne's Gre en G odde s s D re s si ng INGREDIENTS • 1/3 cup sour cream • Juice of one lemon • Salt and pepper, to taste • 2 handfuls of arugula or baby spinach • 1 handful of parsley, stems included • 1 cup herbs - basil, chives, dill. Mix it up. • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix all ingredients in a blender or food processor and enjoy. Swap out your favorite herbs and greens, toss in a clove of garlic and check for seasonings after it sits for a minute or two. 2. Store in a jar, up to a week. Playing a championship course can be pricey and out of reach. But imagine playing faraway courses without leaving the area! The Nine Golf is an indoor golf facility offering more than 118 different courses from all over the world, spanning over five levels of difficulty, which is perfect for beginners as well as more advanced golfers. They also offer par three courses which are great for short game practice and beginners who want to play a course, but do not feel comfortable playing the longer courses.

The Nine Golf was started by Jae Kim and Jason Sunwoo, who are both avid golfers. “We chose 3100 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Duluth, to be the first Nine Golf because it is filled with avid golfers and it’s a wonderful community,” says owner, Jae Kim. Both owners are locals and have built a strong relationship with the people here, and the location is accessible to people in neighboring cities and towns. The facility has 10 bays, seven semi-private and two completely private that are enclosed behind a glass door with two large couches - perfect for a more private golf session with a client, friends, or family. FINDING ZEN ARTICLE BY JOHNS CREEK CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF

WHERE DO YOU GO TO CALM THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL? Finding quiet during your day doesn't have to mean solitude and meditation. Finding an activity where you can focus and let all the stress melt away is guaranteed to help you find your zen. We asked two friends where they turn.

Karla Wilkinson City Lifestyle Administrative Coordinator One word: nature. Whether in the mountains, on the beach or walking by a stream in the woods, nature pulls me in and washes away the stress and worry of the moment. The fresh air and negative ions provide a mental clarity that I can’t get anywhere else. I try to get out as much as I can, but in today’s hectic world, it isn’t always possible. A simple five-minute walk can make a huge shift in my day. My husband and I try to make a yearly pilgrimage to a beach or lake for mental health and relaxation.

30

LOCA L’S CH OICE | FITNE S S

Naomi Gasson

I find my zen when I am out hiking. I have always loved being outside, the back-to-basics appreciation of nature is so fulfilling for me! I love the sounds and colors, especially in the fall. I literally breathe out my stresses and breathe in gratitude when I am hiking. I often hike Kennesaw Mountain because it is so close to work. The views from the top are fantastic and always changing with the season. In January this year, my husband and I took a picnic and hiked the 17.4 mile loop in one day. It was amazing! I do a lot of networking for my business, so I am known for “netwalking” rather than the traditional sitting in a coffee shop and learning about other businesses. I really like that there are less distractions and all those endorphins flowing really help with the creative energy. You really get to know someone! I highly recommend getting outside and finding your zen!

Feel-Good Fitness Women working out with women is a win-win at Delta Life Fitness ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

34

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FITNE S S

You’re not alone! January new year’s resolutions are a great place to start a fitness journey. We sat down with Hanna Green from Delta Life Fitness for some inspiration.

make you feel like you are already part of the family! Throughout the class of course your instructor will be hyping you up, but so will our members.

WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST FOR A WOMAN STARTING FROM ZERO FITNESS EXPERIENCE?

CARDIO, WEIGHT TRAINING AND FLEXIBILITY ARE ALL KEY COMPONENTS TO FITNESS. CAN YOU SHARE A TYPICAL WORKOUT AT DELTA?

Consistency is key. We have many women of various fitness levels that can all tell you the same thing: You’ll never regret coming in for a workout, but you will regret skipping one! Stay positive and don’t give up! Keep your eyes on the prize and don’t be too hard on yourself if you fall off track. If you have a day where your workout performance isn’t up to your standards, don’t beat yourself up about it! You still showed up for yourself and did the dang thing!

HOW DO YOU HELP CLIENTS SET AND KEEP TO FITNESS GOALS? One thing that keeps our Delta ladies coming back is not only the fact that our workouts are interesting and engaging, but we have the most welcoming group of ladies that will keep in touch with each other and hold each other accountable. When you join our studio, you are joining a community of women that are very similar to you. We all have goals of bettering our health and getting a killer workout in.

WHY DOES WORKING OUT WITH WOMEN MAKE SENSE FOR WOMEN? When you take a Delta Life class, it is so much fun that you basically forget that you are even working out! Our studio is a judgement-free zone, the women who work out here experience a comfort level that you will not find at a regular male and female fitness concept. The moment you join a class, you will not only feel welcomed by the staff, but the ladies in the class will

Delta classes are called Tone and Torch and will burn anywhere from 300-500+ calories in 30 minutes. Not only do they burn a ton of calories during the workout but Tone and Torch classes are broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training to maximize the afterburn effect. This is the formula for success whether you are looking to slim down or tone up. These short and effective workouts incorporate unique and functional exercises that make you love working out again. If you are a member for one year or five years, you will never experience the same workout. You will experience 500+ different exercises in the seven different timing formats. This workout program is all you need with three full body days, one lower body focused day, one upper body focused day and one core and stability focused day every week! The cardio (torching) exercises will help you hit that high calorie burn, while the strength (toning) exercises will make you stronger and more toned, so together this will get you more results in less time.

DELTA HAD A FABULOUS FIRST YEAR. WHAT ARE YOUR BUSINESS GOALS FOR 2023? Our business goals for the new year include introducing new programs and initiatives to our concept, to provide our ladies with additional resources to reach and exceed their fitness goals. We will also have a focus on retention and expansion, as well as establishing additional partnerships within our JC community.

“I'd like to give a shout-out to my assistant manager, Marybeth, who is so committed to DLF and a huge factor in the success of the studio.”

“I would like to thank the owner, who is my dad, Bill Green, for giving me the tools and advice that I needed to make DLF a success. He has been in the fitness industry for over 40 years and has been my mentor throughout this whole experience.” TELL US ABOUT ANY COMMUNITY GIVE-BACK YOU’RE DOING. We have many programs here at DLF that focus on community appreciation. Just last month we held a food drive for North Fulton Community Charities. This month we will be hosting a Holiday Market to support our local businesses and share them with our ladies and the JC community. We are also hosting a Toys For Tots toy drive for the U.S Marine Corps. Bring an unwrapped toy and grab a free workout! We

REELING IN RECOVERY ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

Finding peace, healing and community on the river are the goals of the new Georgia based non-profit, Reeling in Recovery. While catching (and releasing) a beautiful fish is every fly fisher’s goal, time on the river and connection to nature is the therapy that most recovering addicts will benefit from. Reeling in Recovery was founded by avid anglers and people who are in active recovery from alcohol or drug abuse. The organization’s first retreat was last fall, introducing others to the therapeutic sport of fly fishing. “By connecting with others in the recovery community, you build a support network. We want to break the barrier of isolation,” says Becca Sue Klein, Executive Director. “Sharing our experiences can bring us one step closer to continued sobriety. Our team and board of directors are dedicated to helping those in recovery.” Reeling in Recovery retreats are free, and open to those who have chosen to live their personal truth - a life without alcohol and drugs.

The Reeling in Recovery network also strives to serve as a safe space and resource for the sober f ly angler who is doing the work one day at a time through volunteer opportunities at retreats and connections at f ly fishing events and through social media platforms. Participants in the retreats do not have to have previous fly fishing experience and can learn at their own pace. “The primary goal is to enjoy the outdoors, have fun and experience something new,” says Klein. “Sharing what you do with others to take your recover y one day at a time could make all the difference to someone who is struggling,” says Andy Weiner, Board President. “It works if you work it. And yes, our participants get out of our program what they put into it. Recover y is a ‘we’ program and we look for ward to walking (or wading!) this journey with the f ly f ishing and recover y communities.” Find more information, events and tools at ReelingInRecovery.org CONTINUED >

New Years Resolution: Get Craf t y

ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

I NSP IR E D BY | A RTS + CULTURE

I started knitting to earn a Girl Scout badge. It was the never-ending project that resulted in a lumpy but lovable blue scarf. When my kids were little, I spent four Saturday afternoons at the local arts center learning to knit and create boiled wool totes. The idea was to meet new people, flex my creative muscle and get creative. Of course, it was a refuge from a weekend of driving to soccer games, grocery shopping, and short-order cooking. Later, my daughter taught me to knit on circular needles and now I can knit a beanie in a flash. It’s a joy to spend a few hours

working with a soft angora and the results are luxurious. I like adding a pom pom, because, why not? Crafty!

MAKING POM POMS WITH A FORK Using a large dinner fork, wrap yarn around all tines. Wrap at least 20 times. Now you’ll thread another piece of the yarn through the center tines on either side of the wrapped loops, and tie a secure knot. Gently pull the yarn off of the fork and cut up the center of both sides to create the pom pom. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/J O HN S C R E E K
