As the holidays are fast approaching, we are gearing up for our holiday tradition of puzzling. We begin buying new puzzles that catch our eye during the year and save them up for the two weeks when my daughter, now 23, and I will clear the kitchen table and break out several new 1000-piece puzzles. We usually knock out four or five of them between the holidays and New Year's. Our puzzle nights consist of turning up the tunes, mostly 80s, with a good bottle of wine into the wee hours, while desperately searching for that “one” piece. Anyone who enters the house is dragged into helping out, and we entice them with some wine and our fabulous music, of course! My son, now 26, never understood how we could get so much enjoyment out of doing the puzzles, but he always joined us for a little while each year and found a few pieces while crabbing about it every time. Each year we crank through our puzzle stash and then donate them to the senior living community where my dad used to live. Then begins the process of looking for new puzzles that look appealing to us during the year to save and start our fun tradition again the next year. As a girl who grew up being a Girl Scout and even spent a few summers as camp counselor, I have always enjoyed the outdoors. But as I got older, the idea of camping, sleeping on the ground, surrounded by insects under a tent, just isn’t as appealing as it used to be. I have grown to become more in favor of nice amenities and less roughing it. If you are like me, but love being surrounded by nature, this one just might be for you! Glamp Blue Ridge is comprised of seven larger-than-life domes nestled in a private area in Cherry Log, Georgia. Each dome sits high in the trees perched on a 40 foot deck overlooking a waterfall. The domes are individually decorated, each with a different theme, and adorned with high-end fixtures and a glamorous feel. I stayed in the Betty White Dome, the highest elevation of all the domes, and as you can imagine, it is decorated with white furnishings, white plush bedding and gold fixtures. Posh and perfect. As for creature comforts, the domes are air-conditioned in the summer and

heated in the winter, have a comfortable king bed, a functional kitchen, beautifully designed bathroom with a vintage vanity, and heated toilet with bidet. The large decks are equipped with a grill, fire pit and large hot tub. At night the property lights up, and you feel like you are in a fairytale. From your deck you can see and hear the rippling water of the beautiful Fall Branch Falls, which is just 100 feet from the domes. The Glamp Blue Ridge property spreads across 25 acres, across from the Chattahoochee National Forest. Those that want to hike can hop right onto the 300-mile-long Benton Mackaye trail or stay on the property and take a short walk up to the Glamp Blue Ridge peak and enjoy a mountaintop serene space. Not only did I feel like I was staying in a five-star resort in the tree tops, but my weekend in the dome at Glamp Blue Ridge gave me the opportunity to spend a few days surrounded by majestic views and camp in glamour. Inspired by Tradition Christmas is by far my favorite holiday. It’s always a cherished time of tradition in our home and for our family. While we know that Jesus is the reason for the season, our children still go sit on Santa’s lap to whisper their list of desired gifts, should they make it on the “nice list.” Cal and I always host a holiday party for friends and family, which allows us to share Christmas cheer with those closest to us. On Christmas Eve we attend an evening church service, then host our immediate family at our home on Christmas Day. Decorating for the holidays is something I thoroughly enjoy doing. This year I decided to decorate our foyer with a mix of green garland and magnolia leaves, because magnolias symbolize luck and stability and are a staple in many gardens throughout the South. In the primary suite, I decorated a flocked tree with a variety of winter beauty from Santas to icicles, birds and snowflakes. This tree gives off a very warm glow when lit and carries the holiday feel throughout our home. As a family, we have a soft place in our hearts for pediatric cancer families and single parents. We like to involve our children in giving back to the families with children at CHOA’s Aflac Cancer Center. Teaching them that it is better to give than to receive is very important to us. My husband was raised by his mother who struggled to work two jobs and long hours to provide for her family. Having seen the sacrifices she made throughout the years made a huge impact on him. We randomly bless single mothers each holiday season and help those struggling with home repairs in her honor. Christmas is such a special time of year in our household and it’s easily our family’s favorite holiday.

I consider myself blessed to have been raised with combined holidays as a child. My father was raised Jewish and my mother Irish Catholic. After marrying, my mother decided to convert to Judaism, but they found it important to celebrate both holidays with their five kids. Although raised Jewish, going to services at the high holidays and having a Bat Mitzvah, I adored the traditions my mothers’ mother (Grams) would bring when she visited at the holidays. We had a tree, stockings going down the stairs, beautiful ornaments and I remember my mother cooking and baking every year. Often, Hanukkah would coincide

with Christmas, and we would light the menorah, say our prayers and be thankful we were a family. That’s really what my parents wanted us to remember and embrace: FAMILY. We lost our mom last year, but the memories and her recipes carry on. I cooked with her for years and baked my grandmothers’ recipes. I’m thankful as the holidays are here that we can carry on those traditions of beautiful, decorated trees she would be proud of, lighting the menorah candles, prayers and having our dad near us to cook and bake just as she would have wanted. Mom’s C a r rot S ou f f lé INGREDIENTS • 1 lb. carrots • 3 eggs • 1/3 cup white sugar • ½ cup melted butter • 2 tbsp white flour • 1 tsp baking soda • Dash nutmeg • Dash cinnamon • Topping: • ½ cup cornflakes, crush them up by hand or in Cuisinart • 3 tbsp brown sugar • 2 tbsp melted butter • ¼ cup chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook the carrots after peeling them (if not pre-peeled) in boiling water until soft. Chop carrots in Cuisinart until in small pieces. 2. Combine in bowl: carrots, eggs, add sugar, butter, flour, baking powder, nutmeg, and cinnamon, mix together and pure into 9” x 9” greased dish (I use a glass Pyrex). 3. Make topping (my mom always adds more butter and cornflakes). 4. Mix up all ingredients for topping, make sure to crush up the cornflakes and chop up the walnuts. Mix, and sprinkle over the carrot mixture. 5. Put in the oven and bake 45 minutes to an hour depending on your oven. Check it after 45 minutes. Enjoy!

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
