My kids reminded me that when they were young, I’d walk them to the bus stop and wave, not saying goodbye. Instead, I’d say, “Go do something nice for someone today!” It’s been a mantra of sorts, and I hope the message haunts them as they navigate the workplace, relationships and community. It’s not that hard to be nice so don’t let your default be negative and critical. Cynicism is not sexy. Sarcasm is not sophisticated. Especially when there’s a human on the receiving end. Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra will bring a sense of pride and American spirit to the Johns Creek community with their “American Soundscapes” concert on Saturday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Johns Creek United Methodist Church. Joined by 22-year-old violin phenomenon and Juilliard School graduate Kevin Zhu, the concert will capture the sounds of the season just five days before Thanksgiving. ‘Tis the gift to be simple, ‘tis the gift to be free, ‘tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the place just right, ’twill be in the valley of love and delight. Venturing out into the countryside, just a bit over an hour from my house, I was reminded how freeing living simply can be. In 200 square feet, I found all the necessary conveniences with a dash of cozy and Instagram cuteness. Tiny home gurus, ESCAPE, designs and builds award-winning dwellings for vacation rentals and primary homes. The units are hand-crafted and the company has been around for 25 years, now with thousands of privately and company-owned units all over America including multiple islands in Hawaii.

This cutie is in Griffin, Georgia, and available on Airbnb. The 275 sq. ft. tiny home offers cozy lofts with memory foam beds, A/C, heating, a full kitchen and bathroom, a desk, and a comfy couch. The bathroom features an off-grid, composting toilet which just requires following directions. Cook in the efficient kitchen or on the firepit outside. Though this spot is off the grid, on 100 acres with outdoor spaces, hiking trails, and creek access, you’ll still have Wi-Fi. But, bring a book and curl up. Forget about the noise of the outside world. ESCAPE is based in Wisconsin and puts the homes through the wringer, where temperatures reach the 90s in the summer and stay below zero in the winter for extended periods with ice storms, blizzards, severe thunderstorms, hail and high winds. In the past two years, there has been a 55% increase in overdose deaths in the state of Georgia. One local nonprofit is not only providing long-term treatment that works, but also helping men find new careers as well. Located in Cumming, No Longer Bound is a long-term, residential, faith-based, evidence-based treatment program that affords men the time they need to uncover the root cause of their addiction. For 32 years No Longer Bound has been a refuge and a therapeutic community for men, providing one full year of evidence-based addiction treatment, family and marriage

counseling, spiritual formation, vocational training, and job placement. One of the biggest challenges for people in early recovery is the mitigation of legal and financial problems, as well as educational gaps and the need for vocational rehabilitation. The role of work in a person's life goes far beyond the economic value it provides. Work provides purpose and a means for supporting one’s family, which is why in addition to addiction treatment, No Longer Bound offers four vocational tracks. Culinary training, digital marketing, landscape design, and an auto mechanic training program are all designed to give

men purpose in their day while providing opportunities to learn new skills and apply what they are learning in real-life work environments. “The main reason I chose No Longer Bound is because I like to work,” says one No Longer Bound resident. “If I was going to commit a year of my life to getting well, I wanted to work.” No Longer Bound Cars is a car donation program for residents on No Longer Bound’s campus where they can learn automotive, motorcycle, and engine repair. The goal is that when a man in this training program graduates from the program, he will not only be one year clean and sober, but he will also have the skills to gain an entry-level auto technician job. Currently, there are No Longer Bound graduates working at Christian Brothers Automotive, Honda Carland, Billy Howell Ford, and Scott’s Automotive, to name a few. Unlike other car donation programs, 100% of the revenue earned from repaired and sold vehicles goes back to funding the program.

The Emory Johns Creek Hospital Auxiliary is a dedicated group of volunteers who support the hospital by assisting staff and patients in a variety of capacities throughout the facility. They’re currently looking for new volunteers to help out in clinical and non-clinical departments. A typical volunteer shift lasts 2 to 4 hours and most openings are available on weekday mornings and afternoons. Weekend availability is limited. There are a few basic requirements that all volunteers must meet: • All regular EJCH volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. • New volunteers must submit and pass a criminal background check. • Volunteers must provide proof of vaccination (MMR, Chicken Pox, annual flu vaccine). • Complete and pass a Tspot blood test for tuberculosis (provided by the hospital)

All volunteers receive a free meal in the café during each shift they work, invitations to hospital events and annual Recognition Luncheon, and a uniform and name badge. The team will work with you to determine which unit is the best fit for your interests and availability. Clinical staff support positions are available in these areas: emergency department, breast imaging center, medical and surgical units, same-day surgery, radiology observation care unit, and food and nutrition services. They also have non-clinical teams in need of help like guest services concierge desk, gift shop, and parking lot guest shuttle. The summer after my freshman year of college, my new bestie and I found waitress jobs at a fancy old-school restaurant in a summer community on Lake Michigan where we could sail, tan, and be teens when we weren’t waiting tables. (I use that term loosely.) What we knew about being a good waitress could fit on one sheet of the tiny notepads the owner handed us before the dining room opened on day one. We were to take drink orders (again, I didn’t know a martini from a Manhattan), neatly write down the food order, drop the slip in the kitchen and get the diners another round of drinks. The minimum wage was $3.10 an hour and we pooled the tips at the end of the night. The dining room manager (the owner’s son, a whiney former frat boy) would put all the cash in a coffee can, tuck it under his blue blazer, and disappear upstairs to the office. We really had no idea what was going on, but were glad to have a fistful of cash at the end of the night for last call at Bar Harbor. Tipping has evolved, and as someone who eats out often, I tend to tip liberally. My kids who have worked in the food service industry claim this is not the norm. Are people really still tipping 15 percent? I decided to dig around. According to a report on Grub Street -- New York Magazine’s food and restaurant blog -- at restaurants, the previous range of socially acceptable and ethically expected tips was 15 to 20 percent. Now, it’s 20 to 25. Tips are often pooled, so don’t punish the entire staff because your fish didn’t come out in a timely fashion. The higher your disposable income, the more you should tip, but anything under 20 percent is rude.

At coffee shops - at least 20 percent. If your order is only coffee, you may tip $1. For food delivery, tip a minimum of $5 or 20 percent, whichever is greater. In cash, when possible. If you’re ordering takeout, tip at least 10 percent. At the bar, tip $1 for a beer and 20 percent for a cocktail. For your hairstylist, nail tech, or house cleaner, it’s 20% minimum. Experts from Wimberly, Lawson, Steckel, Schneider, & Stine P.C. chimed in at a Georgia Restaurant Association’s webinar earlier this year. They explained that the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and the tip credit minimum wage is $2.13 per hour. Tips received must bring employees’ hourly rate to at least $7.25 per hour. If not, employers are required to provide supplemental pay. Tip pools are a popular way to distribute gratuity among staff. A round-up in September’s Forbes Advisor reported most people tip when it’s expected - 95 percent of respondents said they tip at least sometimes, with 76 percent saying they tip always or often. The majority of respondents say they tip an average of 11 percent to 20 percent. Most people tip more when they leave a digital tip. Nearly 65 percent of people tip at least 11 percent more when they tip digitally versus with cash. One in three people feel pressured to tip, while 18 percent feel uncomfortable about tipping. During this season of giving, consider being more than comfortable tipping generously. Show your appreciation with eye contact, a flood of please and thank yous, and yes, a hefty tip.

The bottom line is to remember to respect the waitstaff who serves you meals. Tip at least 20 percent always and for goodness sake, use your manners! “May I please have...” rather than, “Ya, gimme a...”

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows).
