The first celebrity I rubbed shoulders with was Barbara Harrison. I was in elementary school. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of shaking hands with John Travolta, Jane Fonda, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ray Liotta (RIP, just last month), Tony Shaloub and Brooke Adams, Martha Graham, Ted Turner, Ralph Fiennes (on the Beltline) and a gaggle of celebrity chefs. I once applied for a job as George Peppard’s assistant when I lived in England and received a very nice rejection letter signed by him (or the assistant who beat me out for the job). I’m someone who gets starstruck, so I’m sure I smiled wide with an awkward expression on my face during these encounters. Ms. Harrison was adored by everyone she met, gorgeous with perfect freckles splashed across her aquiline nose. She would strut around in her bikini, fans following her from a disrespectful distance. During most daylight hours, she sat on her throne, behind dark sunglasses, a regal expression on her face while she surveyed her kingdom. She was royalty and I loved her deeply. My summers were filled with celebrities of a different kind. They ruled over the swimming pools of my youth. Barbie Harrison was a lifeguard at our swim club. All summer long, she and the other Hollywood lifeguards at Colony Swim Club would reign supreme, sitting on their stands twirling their whistles while looking down upon the swimmers, chicken fighters and annoyed mothers. They were aristocrats. I don’t know if it was the giddiness of summer vacation, their matching Speedo bathing suits (an occasional bikini), all that flesh and heat or just my youthful midwest naivety, but those lifeguards added glam to my life. This summer, I hope you find your magic and take this issue along with you when you head to the pool or shady perch. INDESIGN K I TC H E N & B AT H When a young family in Roswell came to InDesign Kitchen & Bath looking for an all-around upgrade for their newly purchased home, the InDesign team saw the potential in the 1980s floor plan. The original galley kitchen was opened up to create a clean, open layout, and to keep with the couple’s “traditional with a modern farmhouse vibe” aesthetic. InDesign used classic shaker cabinetry with more traditional turned legs on the custom island. GEORGIA C OA S TA L F LO O R S K I TC H E N A N D B AT H At the end of 2020, a young couple with three children came to the Georgia Coastal Floors Kitchen and Bath showroom to discuss a kitchen remodel. The couple wanted their new kitchen to be a modern farmhouse style. This remodel features fully customized cabinets all made from scratch, with Italian-made porcelain countertops and backsplash. The island waterfall edges match seamlessly with the wood-stained custom cabinets in a stain made custom for the client. The hood is also custom made with the same custom stain to match the island cabinets. This project is unique because it is a fully customized kitchen that no one can replicate. From the cabinet sizing to the wood stain, each item was made perfectly for this kitchen. Prior to beginning this project, the design was fully rendered on a design software called Revit, where the client was able to see her whole kitchen come to life right from the start. The Chattahoochee River is a great place to float or fish on a sunny afternoon or go for a spin on the multi-use trails in the Cochran Shoals unit. The 48 miles of river and 15 land units that make up the park can keep you busy for a whole day or just a few hours for a quick getaway from the fast pace of the city life. The river offers excellent opportunities for leisurely paddling a raft, canoe or kayak to observe wildlife and wildflowers, do some fishing, or simply relax in nature. When Buford Dam is not releasing water, the river is calm flat water with an occasional class I/II shoals or rapids. Currents can be strong around submerged rocks and jagged tree snags. Rubber-soled shoes are a must for tackling slippery rocks and the occasional broken glass bottle. Or volunteer to do clean-up.

When it came time for sustainability expert Danny Seo to film the third season of his TV show Naturally, Danny Seo, he shifted production to the community of Serenbe, just outside Atlanta. Seek eco-friendly materials. Seo emphasizes the importance of furnishings that do not spread chemicals through “off-gassing.” Cartwright points out that even natural materials can release similar toxins when treated with certain glues and paints. Look for natural, sustainably sourced products from industry databases like Mindful Materials, or check out health and safety certification bodies like Well. Recycling and reuse are also a great sustainable practice and were part of the design strategy for Portal—from the beautiful table crafted from a repurposed tree trunk, to the vintage décor on living room shelves. Sun’s out, Gum’s out. Schedule your Summer Appointments now! Several times a year, I am lucky enough to be able to take mother-daughter trips with my young adult daughter. For this getaway, we chose relaxation on the powdery white sand of Crystal Beach in Destin, Florida. Thanks to the efficiency of the experts at NewmanDailey Resort Properties, we were able to put together a hassle-free, long weekend stay that fit our needs. And we have found that using a professional management company like Newman-Dailey is a benefit, as the property is kept exceptionally clean and safe. We arrived at the lovely Emerald Dunes Condominium and found our keyless check-in to be quick and easy. The well appointed condo was not a surprise, as we have stayed at other Newman-Dailey properties in the past and are always impressed. The two bedrooms and main bedroom were decorated beautifully and the large kitchen well equipped for those that want to cook and eat in while staying there. The ocean views from the balcony and main bedroom were spectacular. The weather for our stay was beyond perfect and as a result, we didn’t want to leave the beach, even though one can arrange for bicycles and several other activities. Crystal Beach is an up in coming destination in the Destin area. It is more secluded and less crowded than downtown Destin. The beach was just steps from the

condo and made it easy to go back and forth during the day and also transport our tropical drinks and other belongings. For dining, there are several walkable spots including Camille’s, the sister restaurant to well known Harbor Docks, known for their mouth watering sushi. We also took a drive one evening to the local spot, Crab Trap, for some delicious grouper and drinks. We discovered that we were not the only ones sharing a mother-daughter getaway. We met a nice mother and adult daughter duo on the beach visiting from Chicago on their annual vacation. Sounds like an ideal plan. An annual trip to Emerald Dunes on Crystal Beach may be in the cards for us as well! Destinvacation.com/

For Nashville artist Paige Morehead, her home studio couldn’t be more perfect. The sunroom — with windows on three sides, fresh flowers tumbling out of vases, canvases and tubes of acrylics at the ready— is her sanctuary. “I paint with acrylic paint which doesn’t have a smell, but I love having fresh flowers in my studio and around the house for aroma and inspiration. But, being in that room is truly a treat for me. I love to create!” says Paige, a self-taught artist and full-time professional since 2003. “I’m a neat freak and like everything in its place and organized, but my studio is an orderly disaster. Someday I hope to have a larger space to paint, because I really like to spread out and work on larger pieces.” Whatever her process, gallery owners and fans implore her to indulge. Her work features vibrant florals, colorful abstracts, black and whites and monochrome abstracts, featured in galleries in the South and nationwide Paige’s inspirations range from such artists as Sterling Strauser to the great masters of Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock, and Edgar Degas. These influences, among many others, have given Paige the tools to fashion a unique style of her own. She uses a palette knife that creates

thick textured visions, and also makes marks around the canvas for flowing purpose. Paige infuses earth tones mixed with vibrant colors, accompanied with a rich high gloss finish that makes the painting pop. Paige’s work comes alive in any setting. She is in her studio this month working on commissions for interior designers and individuals and keeping her galleries stocked.
