My brothers are my rocks. My sister is my anchor. Our dad “Spud” passed in 1999 from nasty mesothelioma and at his memorial service in Charlotte, we stood around the piano and sang a medley of his favorite songs. How we got through that without drowning in an ocean of tears is nothing short of a miracle. We looked at one another in the eyes, held on tight and smiled. That much has not changed. He was an enthusiastic and energetic piano player at family reunions, church potlucks, Rotary sing-alongs and parties. One snowy morning years ago, he got a call from a friend whose daughter was getting married and just had the band cancel because of icy roads. Spud grabbed a tie, slipped behind the wheel of our station wagon and made his way to the reception. The bride was a friend of mine and hugged me at a recent high school reunion, thankful for dad’s can-do attitude and piano prowess. Now, I see (and hear) my dad in my brothers and it’s a joy. They share the same saunter. His laugh lives on in them and I hear his booming baritone when they sing. And, that’s often. I feel dad with me when I sail on Lake Michigan, hike the trails behind the cottage where we spent summers and whenever I feel low. “Come on, sis, let’s go!” I’m so very blessed to be surrounded by siblings who love unconditionally, celebrate often through song and laughter and hold one another up. Just like dad. Enjoy this issue dedicated to men. Happy Father’s Day, friends!

ARTICLE BY COURTNEY HESTER The North Fulton chapter of YMSL (Young Men’s Service League) completed their yearly Ultimate Gift event in March. After many rain setbacks and a few years of “not normal,” we want to celebrate this VICTORY. Most of all we celebrate the work of the City of Alpharetta Parks and Rec department and their Rucker Farm. A new irrigation and drainage system installed over two days of work will allow the farm to continue to bring healthy education to outlets in and around Alpharetta. The farm partners with North Fulton Community charities to provide a portion of their fresh produce to feed those in need. What fun digging in the dirt and being together! Learn more about the farm and find ways for your family to be part of the fun.

YMSL is a nationwide, 20-year-old philanthropic organization that allows and encourages high school sons and their moms to serve local community needs. The North Fulton chapter is one of four local chapters in the area. As the National Chapter said, “Despite an uphill climb of uncontrollable obstacles, the majority of (our) established chapters found creative ways to make a

John McCullough of Johns Creek fondly remembers his wife Mary as the love of his life. “She was just gorgeous and I was always proud to have her on my arm, wherever we went,” says John. “She was a kind, gentle person and just a joy to be with. She was shy, but not too shy.” Theirs is a sweet love story. They had met in college almost by mistake. Dating in the early 1970s was quite different. Mary was an alternate option for a date after his initial choice was unavailable. Funny thing was that both of his choices were roommates and it was Mary who had informed John that his first choice was already dating. And, so began a great love affair that would see the young couple leave home and move to Atlanta, where they had three beautiful children, two successful

careers and many grandchildren. John and Mary were the best of friends. “There’s nothing to be sad about when I think of Mary,” says John. “We shared a 45-year marriage. We were kind of joined at the hip. We were blessed.” John first learned about the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) by reading an article in Johns Creek City Lifestyle and decided to go to the Shaken, Not Stirred Gala. That first year John went to the gala by himself. “Mary would never get involved in talking to other survivors,” says John. “I doubt she would have gone with me if she were still alive.” Over the subsequent years John brought his family and friends to the gala to support the organization and in remembrance of his wife, Mary. “It helped me to see the support that GOCA was providing to survivors and their families.” For the third year in a row GOCA has opted for a virtual Shaken, Not Stirred charity fundraising broadcast to be held on June 12. The one-hour broadcast features educational and informative content about the organization and its mission, and highlights members of their community. On June 4, the Rotary Club of Johns Creek North Fulton will host its annual charity car show event in support of the Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation. This annual event will zoom into and park at Johns Creek’s premier green space, Newtown Park, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The car show will feature cars of all kinds and is a free, family-friendly event. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy grilled delights prepared by Johns Creek’s own Johns Creek Fire Department, great music, and a “popular choice” award ceremony. The show will go on rain or shine.

The primary mission of the Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation is to support the City of Johns Creek, Georgia firefighters and police who are injured in the line of duty and to assist their families if they are killed in the line of duty. A long-term disability or death of a public safety officer always generates extraordinary expenses and financial hardships that put a strain on the public safety officer and his/her family. The Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation provides financial support, especially with unexpected expenses not covered by typical employee benefit plans. The JCPS Foundation provides critical funds, like funeral expenses, medical expenses, and other necessary resources, when a death or illness causes a significant financial hardship to a fellow Johns Creek fire and police officer. The secondary mission of the Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation is to increase community awareness of the many programs provided by the Johns Creek Fire Department and the Johns Creek Police Department.

Since 2001, Franklin Pond Chamber Music, in collaboration with the ASYO, has coached and inspired young classical chamber musicians by providing the highest quality music education. Meet Tobias Liu, one of a robust group of Johns Creek student musicians, who started his intensive training with Franklin Pond at age 10. A violin student of Nadir Khashimov (also a Johns Creek resident), Liu is no stranger to braving center stage. Liu’s love for the violin started passionately at age 5 when he was inspired by his sister Phoebe’s violin lessons. At age ten, he made his solo debut at Carnegie Hall and with the Georgia Philharmonic at age 11. As he honed his skills through Franklin Pond, countless prestigious awards followed that have earned him performances on a worldwide stage. Most recently, Tobias was named winner of the Young Arts National Competition. He has also been selected as a member of the 2022 National Youth Orchestra for the United States of America and will tour Europe in August. Aside from numerous solo awards, Liu has served as concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and the GMEA All-State Orchestra and has played in international music festivals with distinguished artists worldwide. This spring, Liu’s Sycamore Trio was selected to compete for the final rounds in three of the largest and most prestigious national chamber music competitions – the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the WDAV Young Chamber Music Competition, and the Coltman Chamber Music Competition. He hopes to continue his solo, chamber, and orchestral skills as a student at Stanford or Yale University. In addition to his busy violin performing schedule, Tobias was also a captain of the Westminster Varsity Swim Team, earning the Swimming All-American National Recognition, and a year-round swimmer at Dynamo Swim Club for ten years. As the president of Westminster Music Service Club, he led his peers to perform regularly at metro Atlanta senior centers and memory care centers including Emory Johns Creek Hospital. “I love chamber music because it allows intimate conversation through music with my peers. In solo, we aim to stand out and express ourselves individually. In orchestra, we learn to blend our sounds, to join forces with a hundred other musicians. FUTURE LEADERS The 2022 class of Student Leadership Johns Creek (SLJC) held their graduation ceremony, the first in two years not as a virtual event, and the induction of their new class of 2024 at Johns Creek High School on Tuesday, April 19th. Mayor John Bradberry, Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann, Emory Johns Creek Vice President of Practice and Innovation Dr. Tim Cunningham, Mercer Professor Dr. Katherine Perrotta, and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis were guest speakers at the ceremony. Former Mayor Mike Bodker kicked the evening off with a special announcement that the 2021-22 Secretary of State Ambassadors representing Student Leadership Johns Creek had won the state competition for the fourth time in six years. Fulton County School Board Member Linda McCain and Johns Creek City Councilmember Larry DiBiase presented graduation cords and completion certificates to all 52 Student Leadership Johns Creek graduates.

INGREDIENTS: Executive Chef Edgar Kano and Sous Chef Chad “Sosa” Hester have created a menu of internationally-inspired, plant-based cuisine that is now available on the lunch and dinner menus at Bar Margot at Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta. The five new dishes are house-made using non-processed ingredients, where nearly all of the produce is sourced from regional Southeastern farms. We met the chefs recently and were impressed by their commitment to flavor and storytelling through their new menu. Each has a magnetic personality and an enthusiasm for their craft that shines through loud and clear in every dish. Lucky you, reader! They shared a recipe for a gorgeous (and easy to make) tostada that just might transport you to another world! But first, a little background. In 2020, Chef Sosa expanded his culinary skillset by launching a food truck called Plant-Based Kitchen. Through this year-long venture, he connected directly with Atlanta’s community of vegans, vegetarians, flexitarians and the plant-curious, who introduced him to the growing desire for elevated plant-based food. His first-hand interactions became his motivation to explore innovative methods and ingredients when preparing hearty, delicious meals – sans animal products, which revealed a need to add such items to the Bar Margot menu. When it came time to begin experimenting with ingredients, Chef Sosa followed his heart for inspiration, which led him to the people of Bar Margot – from the bartenders and cooks he works alongside to the restaurant’s multicultural clientele. “I am grateful for the array of cultures shared inside our kitchen. It is a reflection of the rich diversity found throughout Atlanta,” explains Chef Sosa. “For instance, one of our cooks, Alissa Bermudez, is originally from Hawaii. I love the clean, vibrant ingredients of a traditional poke, but to make it vegan, we replaced ahi tuna with red and golden beets. Several of our team members are from West Africa, which became a source of inspiration for the spicy jollof rice garnished with a meaty-textured king trumpet mushroom.” Trying new dishes can be intimidating, for certain. But, during this fresh spring season of rebirth, why not venture outside your meat and potatoes and treat your body to a plant-based dining adventure.

2 tablespoons olive oil 4 tablespoons soy sauce, enough to coat all of the ingredients 4 cups steamed chickpeas 1 red onion, diced 1 red bell pepper, diced 2 cups chopped cauliflower ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves 2 ½ tablespoons onion powder 2 ½ tablespoons garlic powder 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon paprika 2 whole ripe avocados, peeled and pits removed 2 tablespoons chili oil 4 fresh limes: 2 juiced, 2 sliced in quarters 3 crispy corn tortillas 1 pound radishes, spiralized 3 tablespoons toasted coconut flakes 4 tablespoons pickled ginger

DIRECTIONS 1. In a medium saucepan, drizzle olive oil, and soy sauce over medium heat. When heated, slowly add steamed chickpeas, red onion, red bell pepper, chopped cauliflower and cilantro. Season with onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and paprika. Saute all ingredients until tender. Remove from heat and pour ingredients into a medium mixing bowl. Cover and place inside the refrigerator to chill for minimum of three hours or overnight. 2. To make the avocado coulis, place the two avocados, chili oil, and half of the lime juice in the bowl of a food processor. Add salt to taste. Puree until smooth. Set aside. 3. Place three corn tortillas on a plate. Spread a layer of the avocado coulis on each tortilla. Remove the bowl of sautéed vegetables from the refrigerator; scoop desired amount onto each tortilla. Top with spiralized radish and sprinkle of toasted coconut flakes. Garnish with pickled ginger. Squeeze juice from lime wedges over each, for added flavor. FourSeasons.com/Atlanta
