LIFESTYLE LETTER

Hello friends,

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Jim Newman | jnewman@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Sue Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com

Did you know that May Day has its roots in astronomy? Traditionally, it was the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. As with many early holidays, May Day was rooted in agriculture. Springtime festivities filled with song and dance celebrated the sown fields starting to sprout. Cattle were driven to pasture, special bonfires were lit, and doors of houses, as well as livestock, were decorated with yellow May flowers. When I was growing up, my little sister and I would pick flowers from the field down the road and make May Day baskets out of construction paper, sewing notions and paper plates. Mrs. Stevenson, and her beauty queen daughter across the street, were the objects of our affection on May 1. We would tip-toe up her long driveway, hang the little basket on the front doorknob, and ring and run. She would come to the door, feign confusion and surprise, shrug her shoulders, sniff the flowers and look out toward our house, winking. We were thrilled. Little did we know this was another of our mother's lessons about kindness and community. That notion is meaningful to all the women in our issue this month. Enjoy their stories and DO drop off a basket of flowers to an unsuspecting neighbor on May Day. Shh, I won't tell!

Talking about her childhood growing up in Johns Creek, Regan Maki Couch is filled with a wave of nostalgia. She remembers when 141 was a two-lane road surrounded by horse farms. “Living in the area felt like we were in the middle of nowhere,” recalls Regan, who grew up one of five children of Caroline and John Maki. She lived in Peachtree Corners/Duluth, in an area that is now Johns Creek. She attended Norcross High School and graduated from Darlington School as a boarding student in 1998 with strong extracurriculars and a bright future. She and her friends spent summers at the Atlanta Athletic Club. “Those are some of my fondest memories. I still hold those friends near and dear,” says Regan. Her favorite teen hangouts were the movie theater, El Torero and Philly Connection. “We would meet up on Friday nights those were the days!” Now, as a mom, she loves raising her children in Johns Creek, not far from where she grew up. “While growth of the area has changed it considerably, the hometown feel still exists, especially when you get involved in the pockets of the community that are important to you and your family,” says Regan.

18

H OM E TOWN H E R O | HOME + DE S I GN

She is involved in the PTA at Autrey Mill Middle School where her son is a sixthgrader and is excited to get involved when her 4-year-old daughter attends school in the coming years. Regan is holding these years close and is proud to be a business owner in the Johns Creek area, helping in some small way to foster an environment of love and support as growth strengthens the community. “Johns Creek is a very diverse city of people from all walks of life. We are all humans and can all bring something positive to the community,” says Regan, who is a Realtor® and Team Principal of The Regan Maki Team, Compass. She is one of Johns Creek’s biggest cheerleaders. “I pray that as we navigate through the years to come, Johns Creek will remain a safe place that is sought-after because of the excellent education, sports, clubs, community, great restaurants, and shops. We are close to the city yet far enough away to foster a small-town feel of our own. Remember to support the local businesses and restaurants that have made Johns Creek feel so special and make it what it is today,” says Regan. You can find Regan at ReganMaki.com or by calling 404.304.6452.

THESE WOMEN SQUEEZE EVERY MOMENT OUT OF THEIR DAYS, MAKING PHILANTHROPY A PRIORITY

Heather Redrick, Chief Nursing Officer at Emory Johns Creek, believes that it takes a village to get everybody where they need to be when you have a very active family. Between her and her husband of twelve years, a detective with the Dekalb County Police Department, they have a total of four kids, one granddaughter, and a four-yearold golden retriever named Lexi. A football-loving sports family, they are outdoorsy, but they also all enjoy settling in for a family games night. Heather’s work at Emory Johns Creek supports several schools and organizations in the community. In her volunteer life, Heather has served as president of Leadership Johns Creek for the last two years and can also be found in the nursery at her church on Sundays.

Pamela Hawkins, a resident of Johns Creek, works for Bank of America and is the chair of the Black Professional Group, Atlanta Chapter (BPG). Grieving over continuous killings of so many within the Black community, she knew that she had to find a way to be a vehicle for change. Seven events and 3,600 people later, Pamela is still actively working on a greater understanding of issues facing the Black community. Starting off each day working out and spending time with God not only relieves stress, it also allows her to be positive. From volunteering at work to her countless other civic, faithbased, or secular activities, it is easy to see why she received a Good Citizen Award from Representative Billy Mitchell. For many moms, one of the biggest stumbling blocks to getting in shape is finding daycare while attending a gym. Alanna Dunn, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran who is now a stay-at-home mom of three, found a solution when she discovered Delta Life Fitness, a women-only fitness studio designed for moms just like her. Delta Life is a one-of-a-kind workout facility, incorporating a three-step approach to its business model that pleasantly sets them apart. Step one is time-efficient 30-minute workouts. Step two is child supervision. And lastly, step three is cultivating a women-only environment. “I had been wanting to join a gym for years, but could only do so if there was trustworthy, affordable childcare for my kids,” says Alanna. “I knew my 2-year-old wasn’t ready to be dropped off at just any childcare. When I saw the beautiful, clean, and brand new playroom at Delta and met the awesome women that care for the kids, I knew this would be a fun and friendly environment for them.” Now a regular at the 4 o'clock class, Alanna enjoys the by-women for-women environment that defines Delta Life Fitness. “I never intended to join an allwomen gym, but never ruled it out either,” she recalls. “After taking my first class, I felt challenged in a good way and supported by the trainers and other women.” As a mom, Alanna is familiar with juggling many responsibilities and multitasking throughout the day, and Delta Life Fitness’s approach embodies that kind of proficiency as well. The workouts are intense but not too time-consuming. They focus on tone and sculpting while tracking the effect of a workout in real-time using innovative technology. The supervised kids corner is fun and comfortable for children, and CONTINUED >

includes activities they will enjoy. Alanna has seen this specifically as an important perk. “I wanted to make sure my kids enjoyed going to the gym with me,” she comments. “They do, which makes my workouts even better.” And while the women-only environment isn’t ever y mom’s preference, the folks at Delta Life Fitness work hard to make their members feel comfortable and safe. Manager Hanna Green and assistant manager Carly Thomas say that their facilities are “beautifully designed to spoil you,” and ever ything, from the bathroom f ixtures to the showers, is created with that purpose in mind. But perhaps the best part about Delta Life Fitness is that it caters to women in all walks of life. “As someone who has had knee surgery, I love that the trainers help you with workout modifications as needed,” says Alanna. “You can always work hard to achieve your goals.” Delta Life Fitness is located at 10700 State Bridge Road in Johns Creek. We wanted to take you away, far away, and inspire you to find your next vacation while encouraging you to dream big.

To the beach, in luxury, Naples style. La Playa is a vibrant beachside resort with service that just won't stop surprising you and a pool patio that is right out of old Hollywood. Ask about feeding time for the school of koi in the poolside garden and be sure to spend a full day at the beach, with chair and umbrella set-ups and waiter service. With a smile. LaPlayaResort.com To the desert, to hike and breathe. We love a resort that encourages unplugging and this one gives you plenty of reasons to do so. Female customers now make up more than half of BMW’s customer base and Stephanie and her team understand the importance of having a female perspective at every level of the customer journey. She has built her team to include 15 percent women. "I am certainly looking to have more female representation on the team. Women are a great fit in the retail automotive business especially as the industry is transforming away from 'typical car dealer' tactics to a welcoming, relationship-based, enjoyable, and transparent experience. Clients want to work with women when buying a vehicle or servicing a vehicle," says Stephanie. For more 20 years, BMW of Gwinnett Place has served the Atlanta area and surrounding communities. To enhance performance capabilities and innovation at BMW of Gwinnett Place, the company relies on a diverse workforce. In addition to English, Spanish, Korean and Chinese, our employees speak seven languages to better serve the Atlanta community. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what your background is, passion is universal and we value diversity in all of our teams,” she says.

The Real Estate Market in 2022 As a local Realtor® in the Johns Creek area, I have had clients ask about where the market is headed this year. We are not in a bubble; there is no crash coming. We are simply in a market with more buyers than homes for sale. Home prices are going to continue to rise steadily for the foreseeable future because of the inventory shortage. As a seller & homebuyer, it is important to know where the market is at today and where it is headed. If you are planning to buy your first home or sell and buy your dream home, there is a cost in waiting. That is why who you work with matters. Ready to talk about what buying and selling in today's market look like for you? Give me a call!
