Navigating You Home Through Every Season There is something so special about the changing of the seasons. There’s nothing quite like the cooler temperatures, the changing leaves, and the synonymous feeling that something new is in the air. As we enter this Thanksgiving season, I reflect on all the moments that have led me to where I am today. As a fly fisher, I find peace on the river so it's easy (and an honor) to support a group providing recovering addicts with access to the sport that brings joy and healing to so many. Today’s cooling housing market, the rise in interest rates, and mounting economic concerns have some people questioning: should I still buy a home this year? Tracye Hutchins and Monica Pearson are two of the most recognizable news personalities in Atlanta, and the newly minted Atlanta News First Network is certainly letting them lead by example. Both of these women’s legacy is entrenched in generosity, helping others, and challenging us all to do better, each and every day. The old adage, “To whom much is given, much is required”, is a motto that Monica Pearson’s mother Hattie Edmondson instilled in her at a very young age. “Monnie,” said her mother, “you must reach back, pull up and push forward others.” Monica has impacted the lives of countless here in Atlanta over the years and she has become a big believer in “look around you, see where there is a need and offer your expertise.” For Tracye, her motto is more of a challenge to herself and to others, “I know it’s hard to find time to give back, but once you start, those who you’ve helped are so appreciative. You really start to wonder, why haven’t I always done this?” And while, “there is always a sense of immediate goodness, seeing the smiles of those who you have helped is the big payoff.” Being in the public eye, both Tracye and Monica have many opportunities to support our community. As a news anchor, Tracye believes that she has, a responsibility to bring attention to our non-profits who do so much to make life better for so many in Metro Atlanta. Atlanta News First has many well-established community programs. “We are part of a large project that supplies books to students in communities of need,” says Tracye. “When I get a hug from the kids, and when they open their own book bags and see books that they can take home and read, it means everything.” For Monica, she again remembers her mother’s sage advice: “Our talents - what we’re good at - are gifts that are meant to be given away and not hoarded.” Meals on Wheels Atlanta (MOWA) is one of Monica’s favorite organizations in Atlanta. “My mother loved MOWA because of the people who made the deliveries. They didn’t just deliver food, they delivered companionship.” Hattie wanted her independence. That was a driving force for Monica that led her to becoming a board member at MOWA and a financial contributor. It seems like we could all learn a little about how to live a dedicated life of service from both of these incredible women. Isn’t it time we all found a way to give back. On Saturday, November 5, several local musicians will come together for a fun night of music and prizes to raise money for Emory Winship Breast Center. Karen Tortoriello, one of Johns Creek’s finest lead vocalists and a two-time survivor of an aggressive form of breast cancer, has revived her old band BackFlash for the event! Familiar already to many area music fans, BackFlash always delivers a high energy, wide-ranging mix of material covering Motown, 70s classic rock, 80s power pop, and so much more. Joining Karen on stage will be fellow Johns Creek musicians Mark Faupel, Bob Jones, Dean Petrie, Randy Rich, and local guitar hero Jimmy Velordi. Ode to Grandpa My grandpa is always the first person to wake up every day in the family, busying himself by cleaning up the courtyard, tidying up the lawn, watering the flowers, and caring for vegetables. All our neighbors recognize him because he works in the yard regardless of whether it’s spring, summer, fall, or winter. He’s handy, and whenever something breaks in the house, he can fix it. I’ve sometimes needed custom sized panel boards for paintings, and I know I can call on my dear grandpa to help me out. My grandpa started learning English when he was 70 years old. He simply read and wrote the words every day. It was a slow process, but he never gave up. At 70, when preparing for the driver’s license test, he spent several months memorizing the driving test manual in English from beginning to end. Now, at 76 years old, he drives my grandma wherever she wants to go. Grandpa cares for the family, and he does many things for us, albeit in a quiet sort of manner. When I asked my grandpa to be a model for my art, he cooperated without hesitation, making all sorts of fun expressions. As I’ve poured hours into a drawing that I hope can capture the essence of my grandpa, I know he’s happy that I’m drawing him, and it makes me happy that I can make him happy. This portrait of him won a national award, and he was proud of what I’d accomplished. But regardless, ultimately, I hope he can feel my gratitude to him through my art. A spatchcock turkey – you could also call it a butterflied turkey – is very simply, a whole turkey with the backbone removed and the bird flattened for cooking.

OK … SO WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO A TURKEY? In addition to amazing your friends and family, there are several other advantages to spatchcocking a turkey (or a chicken, for that matter!) Have you ever ended up with a turkey breast that is dry by the time the thighs and legs are at 165°F? By flattening the turkey with the legs out to the sides, the thighs and drumsticks are more exposed, which means that they cook faster. This allows the dark meat CONTINUED >

to reach a higher temperature than light meat, so the turkey cooks evenly and the white and dark meat finish together. Free up your oven and grill your turkey this year on the Big Green Egg. That way, all the turkey’s skin is exposed to the full heat of the EGG at the same time. With none of the skin underexposed, you end up with juicy meat and crispy skin for the whole bird. Because it is flattened, a spatchcocked bird doesn’t use as much vertical space in the EGG. That leaves room for adding an EGGspander 2-tiered rack, so you can cook several sides above the turkey. HAZING IS NOT AN ACCIDENT

Rae Ann Gruver knows that bullying is not an accident. Hazing is not an accident. A child dying because he wanted to belong is not an accident. It is an abomination. Gruver’s son Max, a graduate of Blessed Trinity Catholic High School, died in 2017 following a fraternity hazing incident at Louisiana State University. While the grief saturated every part of their life, Gruver and her husband Steve started the Max Gruver Foundation to ensure other parents don’t have to go through such a horrible ordeal. Their nonprofit organization works with schools and universities to end the scourge of hazing on campus. The Max Gruver Foundation uses educational seminars and presentations to create awareness and education about the danger of hazing and bullying. The foundation also advocates for anti-hazing laws, including helping to get the Max Gruver Act passed in Louisiana. “Max’s death was not an accident because hazing is not an accident,” Rae Ann Gruver told Johns Creek City Lifestyle magazine. “Max’s death was 100% avoidable and

preventable because hazing should have never been a part of joining a fraternity or any organization. Parents need to be aware of the signs that their child may be getting hazed and step in if they feel hazing is going on.” The Gruver family wants everyone to know hazing needs to stop. They want high schools, college campuses, Greek organizations, and government entities to stand against hazing and save lives. The Max Gruver Foundation and the funds it raises through events like the Fly High Max 5K help to ensure hazing has no place on any campus. The night before they buried Max, the Gruvers found a paper he wrote on blessings. The last paragraph was this: “God works in funny ways. He does bad things sometimes because in the end they are good. Something bad may happen to you, but it may happen because it will make you better. He does bad to ultimately create good.” These four sentences gave the Gruver family the strength and direction to start their foundation. MaxGruverFoundation.com
